RABBI ARI AVERBACH Hans Küng, a Catholic theologian, once made the claim, “There will be no peace among the nations without peace among the religions and no peace among the religions without dialogue among the religions.” If one ought “to think globally [and] act locally,” peacemaking might be enough of a reason for interfaith dialogue, but my own motives for interfaith relationships go beyond peacemaking. I engage in interfaith dialogue for two additional reasons. The first is that I find the relationships that I form in interfaith settings life-giving. Invariably, people who are willing to cross religious boundaries in the name of friendship are open and loving individuals.

I’ve been engaged in interfaith activities for more than a decade, and I’ve rarely encountered a dialogue partner that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. But I also enjoy interfaith encounters because I learn from them. Sometimes I see beliefs that resonate with my own. So far from undermining my own faith commitment, as some worry that interfaith dialogue will do, it deepens it. In my opinion, then, peacemaking, relationship building, and spiritual growth are all reasons for interfaith activity. As it happens, there will be a wonderful opportunity for interfaith engagement starting this month and continuing into early summer. There will be an opportunity to connect to an interfaith community soon.

On Sunday, May 15th at 4pm, at Padre Serra, in Camarillo, Peace Catalyst International, together with the Ventura County Interfaith Community and Two Faiths One Friendship will host an interfaith mixer to kick off a friendship project. During the dinner, folks will be encouraged to engage in a relationship-building exercise to begin the process of interfaith friendship formation. Following the exercise, individuals will be invited to form friendship groups in which they will be able to nurture the relationships begun at the dinner. Dinner's free! ERIC FEIGENBAUM, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT I was eight years old the first time I walked into Temple Etz Chaim – the same age as my son is today. The synagogue building was brand new with a crisp, clean feel. The windows above and to the side of the bimah that today have stained glass were just tinted glass. The beautiful, artistic reliefs on the bimah were not there – it was just the same color wall as the rest of the room. The Temple had spent a fortune on this wonderful new building, so some things had to wait. But not everything. One of the best parts of Temple Etz Chaim is our level of volunteerism.

Congregants made many of the things you still see today including the hand-carved wooden mezuzot and the hand-embroidered Torah covers. One congregant even donated the carpet from his carpet business. The building wasn’t just created off monetary donations, but through the gifts of time and talent. On April 10th, we had our Capital Campaign Kick-Off event to continue the work of the last generation. The TEC of my childhood was new and state-of-the-art, I now have white in my beard and our shul has become dated.

RABBI RACHEL SIMMONS The moment where Passover really feels like Passover to me is when I eat that first bite of the Hillel sandwich: the crisp, crunchy matzoh, the sweet, joyful-tasting charoset, and the sharp, bitter maror, all together. It is from the Passover Seder-- specifically, from the bittersweet taste of that Hillel sandwich-that I am drawing my strength as I prepare to leave my role as Rabbinic Intern at TEC and begin my next chapter as Associate Rabbi at Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, Maryland this summer.

While no one can renovate me, our congregation pledged $1.5 million of our $2.2 million goal to rejuvenate TEC. From air conditioners to curtains to bathrooms to the leaky roof over the office – our shul will get some much-needed love and be an even greater pleasure to come home to. And my son and daughter will be able to talk about how they remember when Temple Etz Chaim was fresh, new and state-of-the-art. If you have already participated in the Capital Campaign, thank you for making all of this possible. If you haven’t yet, every contribution counts.

I also anticipate with great eagerness the sweetness of returning to the East Coast, where I grew up, getting to live near my family again, and getting to dive into new challenges. There is an added sweetness of knowing that thanks to Zoom, the distance between LA and MD doesn't seem quite as far as it did a few years ago. At the same time, the bitterness and sadness of leaving TEC is also very real. I have loved my time with you, loved singing with you and praying with you and learning with you.

And just like the Hillel sandwich, with its contrasting maror and charoset, the bitterness of my leaving serves to accentuate the sweetness of what I have loved about being a part of the TEC family. I will miss you all, and I carry you with me in my heart.

A LOOK BACK AT TEMPLE EVENTS & PROGRAMMING BINGO MARATHON

APRIL 3, 2022 After some delay due to Omicron in early 2022, TEC hosted our Bingo Marathon and the response was overwhelming! It was great to see Spiegel Hall overflowing with Bingo participants who came from far and wide to play, test their luck and reap the rewards of a triumphant day. But the real rewards went to TEC's stalwart crew of volunteers, who not only came out in full force to a day of Bingo, but do so on a regular weekly basis. Cards were sorted and sold, lunch was served and another TEC tradition returned to our amazing shul unscathed by COVID. Thanks to all who played, all who attended - and especially all who volunteered!

A LOOK BACK AT TEMPLE EVENTS & PROGRAMMING MINI MITZVAH DAY

APRIL 24, 2022

Amidst students attending Religious School on Sunday, April 24, many TEC members congregated under the tent for a "Mini Mitzvah Day." A lot of fun was had by all as 21 blankets and crocheted hats were made for foster children and refugee families. There were about 50 congregants participating, in addition to several Religious School families as well. As you can see, a lot of hard work and effort went into the creation of these blankets and hats and the results were awesome to see. Many thanks to all of our amazing volunteers who took time on a Sunday morning to give back to those less fortunate. And a special thanks to our Social Action Committee who organized a fun and inspirational morning - and provided the bagels right after Passover ended!

On Sunday, April 10, TEC officially kicked off its Capital Campaign for 2022. Graciously hosted by TEC members Lisa & Hardy Warren at their home, the Kick-off Event was well attended by temple members, staff, members of the board of directors and a host of others who shared in the excitement and joy of what was discussed. After some hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, President Shari Mark called the event to order and began the presentation. Rabbi Averbach articulated a compelling vision for the future of TEC, which includes a variety of renovations and planning to bring our congregation into the 21st Century. Among the various plans for this campaign: a full renovation and refresh of Paskow Sanctuary, Spiegel Hall, the Chapel, offices and primary restrooms. Past President Sherri Finn-Werber conveyed the urgency of TEC’s membership acting now as much of our primary building is over 40 years old without substantial changes or upgrades. The architectural and design team of Anuj Dua & Kanak Patel then walked through the proposed renovations, with the goal of updating and upgrading where it was necessary and preserving and protecting where it was appropriate. Among the proposed changes: A renewed sanctuary with a fully-accessible bimah, enhanced acoustics, sound system, climate controls and lighting. New interior finishes and carpeting will also be added to produce a warmer feeling with refinished and upholstered pews. A warmer welcome in our main entry lobby, with new furnishings, finishes, lighting and comfortable areas to hang out, enjoy a cup of coffee and connect online or off.

Completely rebuilt restrooms that meet ADA requirements, as well as a family restroom to meet the needs of both families with young children and seniors who require assistance. Substantial improvements in Spiegel Hall, specifically to the walls, ceiling, carpeting, lighting, sound system and finishes to create a more attractive and flexible room. Modernized administrative office that will be reconfigured as a more inviting space, with professional ambiance for our clergy to meet with congregants and state of the art technology. Replaced heating and air conditioning systems that date back to the main building’s construction in 1984. And lastly, one fifth of the campaign will be dedicated to a retirement of TEC’s mortgage. As the event continued, Linda Hutchings detailed elements of the campaign and identified those who were leading it, and Spencer Miller spoke personally and passionately about the need for this campaign to gain traction and garner support. The event was capped off with a summation from Past President and Campaign Co-Chair Wendy Margolis, who spoke to the necessity of participation in this needed endeavor. Dubbed “A Rededication to Our Future,” TEC’s Capital Campaign is officially under way! The plan is for construction to begin very shortly after the High Holidays this fall. More information to come... DEBBIE BLUMENTHAL During the month of May 2022, we look forward to celebrating the holiday of Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s Day of Independence. For young children this means displaying the flag of Israel, singing Hebrew songs, and learning about the county of Israel. This year we have planned a huge outdoor celebration in our beautiful play yards. Some of the activities we have planned include: the Maccabee obstacle course, Kibbutz planting in the garden, Israeli music in the dessert tent, an “El Al” airplane trip, and enjoying an Israeli lunch of pita, salad, and falafel. The best part is that parents will be able to volunteer and share in this fun experience with their children. Our May Tot Shabbat will be on Friday, May 13th under the tent on the TEC plaza.

We are excited to announce that our preschool teacher, Kristi Dollison has been promoted to Assistant ECE Director! Kristi has already made such a positive impact here at Temple Etz Chaim and I look forward to working with Kristi. She has so much positive energy and enthusiasm for early childhood education and building relationships with families in our community. I know that she will be a strong and supportive part of our ECE team!

The ECE Center will be closed on Monday, May 30th in observance of Memorial Day.

During May and June, many important events will occur. I have highlighted a few.

On this Shabbat, our 6th-grade students will be leading many of the prayers and singing songs.

The Confirmation of our tenth-grade students will take place on Shavuot, on Tuesday, June 7th.

Please join us for “Yom Hamoreh – Teacher Appreciation Day” on Friday, May 13th, when we honor and recognize our Religious School Teachers. Dr. Abraham Heschel once said, “There is no higher distinction than being a teacher in our teachings. We celebrate teachers. The teacher is an essential pillar of Jewish living-past, present, and future.”

The promotion ceremony for our Seventh Grade students will be on Sunday, May 22nd.

These terrific young adults represent our future, and I feel comforted knowing it is in their hands.

These outstanding young adults have worked hard to reach this day. The majority of these students will continue their Jewish education in our Confirmation Program.

I truly appreciate our students’ dedication in preparing for this special evening.

Daily, our teachers create a creative and positive educational environment where our students enjoy learning and being at Temple Etz Chaim.

Continuing their Jewish experiences will help to strengthen their Jewish identity during their essential teenage years.

CINDY GOLDBERG By the time you read this, the crumbs of Passover will be gone but the memories of the holiday will remain. For the first time in a few years, we were able to have a wonderful community Seder. Over 70 people came together in Spiegel Hall to tell the story of our people’s journey from slavery to freedom, to share a good meal (thanks BSC Catering!), interesting conversations, 4 cups of wine, and some delicious afikomen! Kadima had a blast at a pre-Passover Chametz scavenger hunt on April 10th, where they rid the Youth Lounge and school building of chametz and had a feast on the findings.

PROGRAMMING AND YOUTH DIRECTOR After Passover, our Youth Department participated in TEC Social Action’s Mitzvah Day focused on helping children in foster care and refugees. It is particularly meaningful given all that is going on in the global and local community. Kadima also had a fun time at our Sports Lounge on Tuesday, April 26. The congregation participated in Yom HaShoah on Wednesday, April 27 on Zoom and in-person to learn about Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel, MAUS. Our dynamic and esteemed congregant Michael Railneau shared insights and important takeaways from this engaging book.

VP, SOCIAL ACTION socialaction@templeetzchaim.org We celebrate Passover this month which reminds us that our ancestors were refugees and many of us have relatives that also had to flee their homeland. We are anguished over the plight of Ukrainians, for those who have been murdered and the 3 million who have become refugees to date. The Social Action Committee is part of the Conejo Interfaith Refugee Team that is helping refugees throughout the world that are settling here, locally. We collect furniture, items for kitchens, baths, computers, cell phones, gift cards, etc. Please refer to the Sign-up Genius and donate what you can. This is a wonderful grassroots organization that is directly providing help. Smaller items can be dropped off or shipped to our main temple office during business hours. We can pick up the furniture. The Pet Supply Drive was a huge successful Shelter Hope Pet Shop. Thank you to Patty Kaye and Merrill Kaminsky for organizing it and to all those who donated. On Sunday, April 24th we had our Mini Mitzvah Day to make no-sew blankets, crochet blankets and baby hats, and enjoyed each other’s company. We are hoping to start a crochet group on Sundays led by Ilana Ulman. We continue to collect fruit and vegetables near the front entrance of the temple the last Wednesday of the month from 8:30am1:30pm as part of our Monthly Mitzvah Wednesday. The produce is given to families of the Westminster Free Clinic. Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers!

Thank you to all who participated in our flower-arranging class, where we made beautiful spring centerpieces for our Seder tables. Thanks to Dana for setting up this fun and different event! Thank you also to those who participated in our WOTEC/Men’s Club Shabbat weekend. We shared meaningful and spiritual services together, and enjoyed a lovely Shabbat lunch after morning services.

Here is a gigantic thank you to everyone who worked on many MC events! Mark Zucherman magnificently headed and coordinated our Scholar-in-Residence Weekend which featured Rabbi Geoffrey Mitelman. Mark and his team worked hard to bring this to TEC. Jonathan Hops and Benny Sommerfeld assembled and led our MC/WOTEC Shabbat, which was warm and welcoming.

Our Mahjongg afternoon in December was such a success that we’re doing it again! Please join us on Sunday, May 15, from 12:00-4:00, for an afternoon of mahjongg, board games, and card games – refreshments and schmoozing are always included! Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, come enjoy the afternoon with WOTEC!Additionally, our Nominating Committee has been working hard to select a slate of officers for 2022-2023, and we will be voting on that slate at this event. Your vote matters – please be sure to join us!

Marc Cohn skillfully organized and led our team in the packing and distribution of Yom HaShoah Candles. You probably received your candle in the mail. Yom HaShoah is the day of Holocaust Remembrance; we hope you remembered to gather your family on the evening of April 27th, lit the candle, read the prayer that came with it, and, at a level appropriate to the age of your children, discussed the Holocaust. It is so important that the six million are not forgotten. Please, keep their memory alive. Please consider a donation to TEC Men's Club to enable us to continue sending out the Yellow Candles.

On Tuesday, May 17th, Gary Katz will lead an evening of Hearing Men's Voices. It will be a meaningful and enjoyable evening of hearing and sharing experiences which are significant in our lives.
