Is it Hanukkah or Chanukah?

Bringing Light Into Darkness Rabbi Richard Spiegel rabbi@templeetzchaim.org
T
he horrific massacre carried out on Friday, November 13th by members of ISIS in the beautiful city of Paris, France left us all devastated and horrified. How could people act this way toward their fellow human beings? Who would want to turn the “City of Lights” into a place of true darkness? Who would murder someone else simply because he or she is a different religion? In a few days, in our Jewish calendar, we will usher in a most beautiful celebration—our own “Festival of Lights”. Hanukkah is a time for spending time with our loved ones, giving gifts, singing songs, and eating delicious latkes. Above all, it is a holiday in which we kindle candles in order to bring light into darkness—to bring joy and hope to our world. The contrast between the actions taken in Paris this past month and those of our ancestors over 2,000 years ago could not be more apparent. The terrorists fight to intimidate members of other faiths and even to eliminate other religions (or really anyone who does not believe exactly as they do). Our ancestors fought only for their own religious freedom.
This is the message of Hanukkah—that religious freedom is precious and that we should respect other religious faiths as long as they respect ours. May the Hanukkah lights burn bright and may they inspire us to cherish our Jewish heritage as well as to work for a world of freedom of religious belief for all people. hrough the efforts of many here at TEC on Mitzvah Day, we were able to support 12 amazing causes as we came together to serve our community and those in need, both near and far. The list of volunteers who had a collective hand in helping to make this a memorable day is too long to mention, but they all know who they are, and our much-deserved appreciation stretches far beyond our campus walls. We would all like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you who took the time to donate to the causes with your time, enthusiasm and commitment. This dedication will go a long way in improving the lives of many. We hope to see you on Sunday, November 6, 2016 for next year’s Mitzvah Day as we continue to help make OUR community a better place. As a reminder, you can continue to do a Mitzvah, by joining us to Feed the Homeless on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the Calvary Community Church. H
appy Hanukkah! How quickly this school year is moving. Turkey day is done, Hanukkah will be celebrated later in the month, and we will have to get used to writing “2016.” At this time of year, Hanukkah is the talk of Religious School students. They are excited and look forward to this holiday with anticipation. This year Hanukkah will begin on December 6th. Our students will be celebrating Hanukkah in their classes with creative activities: singing, art, food, stories, and dance. Although the story of the oil lasting for eight days is emphasized, another deeper and more important message is taught to our students—that Hanukkah celebrates the first battle for religious freedom in the history of the world. Our world is more modern when compared with the time of the Maccabees; however, just as in their time, negative attitudes about Judaism still exist. During this holiday, families should remember to talk to their children about the brave Maccabees who fought for the very survival of the Jewish people. Hanukkah symbolizes the fight against totalitarianism in
all its facets. The positive effects are universal – liberty and freedom. The discussion is especially timely given the present state of the world. Children should be able to correlate the events of today to the times of the Maccabees. Sadly, it seems to be true that history continues to repeat itself. May we all have the strength to speak up when needed. As we light the candles and rejoice, let us pray for world peace and religious freedom for all. Hopefully, these prayers will one day be answered. his month we wanted to share some photos of a Z’havah (younger woman Sisterhood) event held in November. It was “A Night of Chocolate” at Tifa Chocolate and Gelato in Agoura Hills. Consider getting involved in Z’havah. We are looking forward to 2016 when we will have a couple of combined events in January and April. Meanwhile, mark your calendar for December 6th when we join forces with Men’s Club for a Brunch from 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. featuring TEC members Janice Orlowski and Dave Munowitch speaking on their volunteer experiences in Israel as well as a presentation from Karl Kwiat from Israel SAR-EL. Even if a volunteer stint in Israel is not in your immediate future, come hear about the experiences of those who have done it. W
e love that the holiday of Hanukkah comes after Thanksgiving! It lends for great conversation when we try to compare the two holidays. We can talk about how both holidays allowed for a group of people to stand up for their beliefs and freedom of worship. We cook delicious foods on both holidays. We can talk about tzedakah and sharing with others. We have two historical stories to tell along with holiday songs and blessings. We are especially excited this year that one of our favorite Jewish musical groups, The Shirettes, is going to help us celebrate the first night of Hanukkah at Temple Etz Chaim on Sunday, December 6th at 5:00 p.m. Their concert will offer traditional Hannukkah songs, original songs, puppets, and lots of audience participation! The children and parents will be clapping, dancing and singing along! There is no charge to attend this event and we hope to see all our TEC preschool families and friends there! Our December Tot Shabbat service on Friday, December 18th at 6:15 p.m. will feature our Pre-K children. Our month will be filled with songs, stories, and holiday fun! Chag Sameach!

W
e have been having so much fun in USY. We went to Camp Ramah for Encampment, where we had Shabbat together, took part in engaging sichot, and danced the night away! Speaking of dancing, the Kadimaniks learned a new dance with the help of our Chapter board called “Ki Heim Chayenu” and wrote cards of thanks to our troops. Kadima day, our first regional event for kadimaniks was a-MAZE-ing! The Junior Usyers also enjoyed their first regional event. I’m sure they will agree that it was inspiring “Inside” and “out.” Machar designed their “Hands for Hunger” (JWW) and learned about tzedakah and mitzvot around the world. b’nai Mitzvot Shalom! My name is Jack Frye. I have been part of the TEC family since I was 2 years old and first met Miss Debbie. I am an 8th grader at Colina Middle School in Thousand Oaks. What I enjoy most about school are the lifelong friends I get to see daily and my PE class (really like doing bear crawls). In my free time I like to participate in a gymnastics program at BMod Fitness where I have been going since I was 3 years old to help me stay healthy and active. My hobbies include riding on the motorcycle with my stepfather, collecting football cards and being with my family and friends. I would like to thank my sister Nicole for all her support in helping me become a Bar Mitzvah. I also want to thank Rabbi Spiegel and everyone at TEC who supported me to get to this day. Lastly, I want to thank my mom, stepdad, grandma and Pop Pop. I love you!
