Shana Tova to you, your family and our TEC family of families! And as Rabbi Paskow said every year as he concluded Yom Kippur Services for the afternoon, “Don’t let me catch you at McDonald’s!”
This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared by Rabbi Alan Lew How Good Do We Have to Be by Rabbi Harold Kushner More Beautiful than Before by Rabbi Steven Leder Caste by Isabel Wilkerson I’ll Show Myself Out by Jessi Klein
The Old Man and the Pool a play by Mike Birbiglia
Unlike the past two years, your TEC leadership didn’t agonize over every detail and have backup plan upon backup plan for High Holiday services No one has to show proof of vaccination and, unless county guidelines change, we will be mask optional but recommended How sweet it is to breathe freely(ish)!
The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green We Are the Weather by Jonathan Safran Foer As a synagogue, we are preparing for the High Holidays (Yamim Nora’im) We worry about tickets and timing and security and seats We make sure we have programming for all ages of children, and that we are being appropriately cautious as the COVID infection rates fluctuate, aware that things might change drastically at the last minute As a dad and husband, I prepare for the holidays by thinking about meals. Are we inviting anyone over? Are we cooking elaborate dishes, new recipes, or old stand bys? As a rabbi, I worry about the service: sermon, music, honors and prayers. But mostly, as a person, as a Jew, I worry about myself Am I ready to face the “ open gates” of these days? I think of all the ways I need to prepare myself When people ask me if I am ready for the holidays, I know that they are asking about sermons But I am often stranded with my own soul and how to work on it this year I find inspiration for myself from all over books, articles, podcasts Here are recommendations that help me prepare: I hope you find your own inspiration to prepare for the holidays And I look forward to learning and singing with you in person or online org
rabbiaverbach@templeetzchaim org My Bar Mitzvah was one week before Rosh Hashanah in 1990 and I was among the kids in my Religious School class who wanted to do the maximum during the service A few months before me, my friend David Tytell arguably did the most of any kid reading all the Torah portions and the Haftarah in what appeared to be more of a marathon than a Bar Mitzvah So it came as no surprise to anyone that our combined hubris and chutzpah had me up on the bimah with the other Cohenim for the Priestly Benediction right after David, a Levi, washed my hands I like to think it was a testament to how much Temple Etz Chaim was home that we were so comfortable and that Rabbi Paskow didn’t so much as glare These next two months, we’ll all spend a lot of time together from Selichot through Simchat Torah We’ll have the joy of being back together in full force for the first time in two years It will once again be a time for kibbitzing in the foyer, davening side by side through long services and watching mischievous kids run around and maybe even sneak into a Priestly Benediction Because of these past two years, we can savor the little almost mundane things we previously took for granted

Our annual WOTEC Membership Luncheon on Sunday, October 9th at 12:30 I am looking forward to all of the upcoming events in the new year
Last year taught us so much which we can use to help us as we move forward in the process
To start off the new fiscal year, we held our first annual poker tournament in memory of our Men's Club member Arnold Stern who loved to play poker The game was Texas Holdem and we had nine players who vied for the honor of finishing in the top three spots The winners were: First Place: Josh Hopstone Second Place: Myles Simpson Third Place: Gary Katz For the rest of us losers, we had plenty of beer and scotch to cry in The pizza, chips, and other unhealthy foods helped provide the necessary carbs to keep up the banter at the table and to see us through to the final hand In early August, the Men’s Club held its planning session for activities and events that will take place during the new fiscal year As always, we have scheduled a variety of things that should appeal to all members of the TEC community The schedule will be available to you in the form of our annual bookmark distributed during the High Holidays We look forward to your joining us in the year ahead
The heart of Social Action lies in helping those who are less fortunate We belong to the Conejo Interfaith Refugee Team (CIRT) that helps refugees from all over the world TEC has made it possible with CIRT to adopt a Ukrainian family of 6 They have two adorable young children and, so far, we have had generous donations from members of our congregation as well as congregations of several of the houses of faith that are also members of CIRT Build a Backpack, our joint project with the Women’s Interfaith Network was a big success due to our congregants providing school supplies and support in packing the backpacks TEC members joined volunteers from houses of faith from all across the Conejo Valley Everyone met at the Islamic Center of Conejo Valley where 150 backpacks for homeless CVUSD students were prepared for the start of school This September’s Feed the Hungry date is Tuesday, September 20th Thank you for your continued help with this program This October, we will be joining the Women’s Interfaith Network for their annual Halloween costume drive providing costumes for foster kids
