ETZETERA March 2021

Rabbi Ari Averbach The theme of Purim is echoed in the lyrics of Hamilton, “The world turned upside down.” It comes from the beginning of the ninth chapter of the Book of Esther, when Haman is hanged on the gallows built for Mordechai, and Mordechai ascends to a prominent position in the government.

This year, of all years, we do not need the reminder that the world can turn upside down. We have been in a topsy-turvy state for longer than we could have ever imagined. The last in-person event we had was Purim, and now a full Jewish year has passed. The world is indeed upside down, and many things don’t make sense.

With some sadness, this month marks a major turning point for our congregation as we say goodbye to our longtime spiritual leader. Many of us have experienced Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief in hearing the news, and might not yet be at acceptance. We will miss Hazzan Pablo’s voice and his presence on the bimah, and we wish him well in the next exciting chapter of his life. We know he will find success, and I am certain that his talents will grace our community again.

In terms of the life of the synagogue, we will be searching for a partner to help lead the congregation through our next chapter, helping vision what Temple Etz Chaim can be. As always, we seek your input in choosing the right person, and we also seek your faith through this transition.

We know that transitions are not easy, but we also know that we are a people constantly on a path of transition. The Hebrew word for transition is avarah, which comes from the same root as the Hebrew word for Hebrew: Ivrit. We are the people of transitions, adapting as we go.

The world may be upside down right now, but we know that soon we will return to the world as it ought to be, stronger than ever before.

President - Shari Mark After more than 20 years of Temple membership and leadership, I am still in awe of how TEC continues to be a beautiful community, meeting our religious and spiritual needs, as well as providing engagement, entertainment and opportunities for us to enjoy our Jewish traditions.

Truly, we are fulfilling our vision statement of wanting to be a vital and dynamic beacon of Judaism for all who seek it. All of this is because of the team that is TEC. What a remarkable organization we have between our clergy, directors, staff and volunteer base. All share the mindset that there is no job too big or too daunting and the way groups come together, many times organically and always unconditionally, to take on an idea, create a new program, support, lend a hand and/or expertise to bring it to fruition is the essence of teamwork.

“Great things in business are never done by one person; they’re done by a team of people.” – Steve Jobs I hope you were able to participate in the recent Virtual Covid Webinar, hosted by the Social Action and Outreach Committees and if you weren’t, it was recorded and is on our YouTube Channel. The event was well planned and executed; our guest speakers were experts in their respective fields, and their superior knowledge on Covid-19 vaccinations, how they work, their safety and efficacy, and how and where to sign up for them was enlightening and so relevant. I am delighted that we heard from several viewers in the following days remarking that they learned so much and were able to access appointments with the information they gleaned.

The individuals who created this program - from inception to presentation - left no stone unturned and brought an event to TEC and the surrounding community that was helpful and of the highest caliber. To everyone involved in this project, thank you.

This month we will be celebrating Passover, possibly my favorite Jewish holiday. As many of you know, no amount of green on the plate would qualify as too much for me, embracing new growth, hope and possibility in an otherwise normal year is even more meaningful this year.

May we have optimism and hope for better days ahead.

Days that bring us together, back to Temple, communal holidays and Shabbat meals, good times and of course, good health.

I hope you loved reading a hard copy of our monthly labor of love publication, Etzetera, in February, and took notice of the “20 in 2020” beautiful two-page spread highlighting many of the projects TEC did during a pandemic year. Truly, an act of grace involving so many who came together to share the many departmental highlights and successes.

To all of those involved in any and all steps, again from inception, to writing, to design and layout and everything in between, thank you.

As I mentioned in my article a few months ago, a group decided it was time TEC had its own dinner-to-go program.

After much time and research, our eagerly-anticipated TEC Shabbat dinner program will be off the ground and a week or two in progress, providing fresh, Kosher, Shabbat dinners to our community at very reasonable prices. We truly hope you have given it a try and if you haven’t, check out the TEC website for upcoming menus. It really makes enjoying and appreciating Shabbat a no-fuss-no muss pleasure! To all of those who have been on many Zoom calls and involved in the many steps it has taken, thank you.

Education at TEC

Debbie Blumenthal - Early Childhood Education The ECE Center ended the month of February with such great excitement as we celebrated the holiday of Purim in our costumes, retelling the story of Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus and eating lots of hamantaschen! The month of March will be equally as exciting as we welcome Spring, and we learn about the holiday of Passover.

As the holiday of Passover approaches, we will be singing about King Pharaoh, frogs, the Four Questions and other holiday favorites. We continue to entertain the classes on Fridays with our Facebook Shabbat Live, which the children can watch on flatscreens in their classrooms. We will be telling Passover stories and singing songs each week.

Registration has begun for the 2021-22 school year.

We are planning a year-round program starting July 2021June 2022. We will be continuing with our COVID health and safety protocols, classroom cohorts, social distancing and mask-wearing. Our butterfly plants are blooming, and we are watching carefully for the caterpillars and butterflies to start appearing. We are blessed with an amazing outdoor space here at Temple Etz Chaim. With seven different play yards for the infants, preschoolers and Kindergarteners.

Our students explore and discover all sorts of nature while exercising their muscles by climbing, running, riding tricycles and playing hopscotch!

Shannon Tepfer - Youth Department Our Mishloach Manot fundraiser and the Purim CARnival was a great success! Thank you to everyone who helped donate and sponsor both for the Mishloach Manot and the drive through CARnival. It was so nice seeing everyone and we were so happy to share these events with all of you. Pesach is coming, and the Youth Department will be hosting activities that are “plagued” with laughter, full of fun, and yes there will be food involved!

Machar is going to experience a new take on Pesach with our “Zoomover” lounge as well.

Joyce Bronstein - Religious School Last month, Debbie Blumenthal and I were honored by the Bureau of Jewish Education for our years of service as Education Directors. It was beautiful to share this honor with her! I am so appreciative of all the kind words I have received this past month. Your heartfelt email messages and phone calls truly made this honor that much more special. Our TEC families have made such a difference in my life. Todah Rabah!

Regardless of where our Seders will be, we must create and give our children their own memories to recount and share. One day, they too will become parents and continue our traditions. The Seder experiences our children have will become unforgettable moments to share with the next generation. The cycle will continue as we strengthen our Jewish traditions. How wonderful!

From my family to yours, I wish you wonderful Passover moments to treasure!

By the time you read this bulletin, we will have celebrated Purim on Zoom! I want to thank Rabbi Averbach, Heidi Birnbaum, Maya Tenenbaum and Shealen Wynner for helping me plan our celebration. Passover is almost here!

A few weeks ago, students received bags with Haggadahs and Seder items that they will use in their ZoomRoom Seder. The rituals and food associated with this holiday help everyone at the Seder feel the warmth and joy of the freedom we enjoy because of our ancestors’ courage and determination.

Men’s Club

Colin Pullan - President of Men’s Club This column is being written a few hours prior to our 2021 Scholar-in Residence presentation featuring Rabbi Norman Cohen discussing Evolving Jewish Perspectives.

Two huge thanks are called for. Marc Firestone, thank you for working so hard about twenty years ago, convincing the Men’s Club to create this award winning program. Mark Zucherman, thank you for assuming the S-I-R leadership position, and with a great committee, bringing about this year’s S-I-R event under the challenges of the pandemic.

Everything that I have seen and heard about Rabbi Cohen tells me that this is going to be an outstanding weekend.

Another big event taking place between the writing of this column and your receiving it is the Drive-thru Purim CARnival put on by the Youth Department with Men’s Club assistance. Youth Department Director, Shannon Tepfer modified and created several carnival games to be played by familes from their car while following all safety protocals.

Our program chair, Mark Goldstein, continues to arrange fantastic events. On Sunday, March 7th, Gary Katz will lead a program on coping with Covid at 8:00pm.

We will have a virtual brunch on Sunday, March 21st at 10:00 am featuring renowned speaker Jerry Rishe. He will discuss the Leo Frank case in Georgia in 1913. Frank was convicted of murder in spite of the evidence clearly showing his innocence. He was lynched two years later. Jerry’s presentation will discuss the reasons and ramifications.

The Technion, Israel’s Institute of Technology, will be discussed at a virtual brunch on Sunday, April 11th at 10:00 am. Its faculty includes four Nobel Laureates, an accomplishment that is the envy of most American universities. You will be impressed by the Technion’s contributions to science and humanity.

Women of TEC

Cindy Scherr - President of WOTEC March already? It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we’ve seen each other in person.

Women of TEC has worked hard to provide Zoom programming for our members during the pandemic.

Our programs VP, Dana Gallenberg, has planned some wonderful activities for this Spring. On Tuesday, March 30, we will have our second movie discussion night. So pour a glass of wine and join us for a lively discussion. On Tuesday, April 20, we’ll have a Zoom game night, with lots of surprises and prizes. And on Sunday, June 6, please join us as we thank our 2020-21 board for all their efforts, and welcome our 2021-22 Board of Directors. More information will follow for all these events, so be on the lookout.

Our Judaica Gift Shop is open by appointment only for Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts, baby, wedding and housewarming gifts, or whatever else you need.

Pesach is coming at the end of March – do you need a matzah tray or cover? Please contact Ann Ross through the TEC Office to make an appointment.

Tikkun Olam Social Action - Judy Gindi

I am beaming with pride over our fantastic Social Action Committee. Thank you to Mark Goldstein, Michael Lysobey and Tami Wank for their fantastic planning of the webinar on Covid-19 Vaccines on February 9th. Over 100 people logged on and over 350 have watched it on YouTube. From the information given that night, many were able to get appointments the next day. I am grateful to our wonderful speakers; Rabbi Averbach, physician Dr. Barry Statner and Ventura County Deputy Director, Barry Zimmerman, who is in charge of the vaccine rollout.

We are busy planning our next collection for James Storehouse, an organization that provides items for foster children. Stay tuned!

TEC will provide fruit and vegetables to those in need in our own neighborhood through the Westminster Free Clinic. The clinic also needs volunteers to package and distribute the food. Strict Covid-19 guidelines are enforced. Please refer to the flyer for more information and mark Wednesday, March 31st on your calendar for our next Monthly Mitzvah Wednesday.

Temple Etz Chaim Live Stream!

At Temple Etz Chaim, all Shabbat Services held in the Paskow Sanctuary are live streamed. Live Streaming allows those in our community who otherwise cannot physically come to the Temple to participate in the Shabbat experience. It also affords B’nai Mitzvah families with out-of-town guests who cannot make it to services the opportunity to participate in the simcha.

Please know that if you ascend the bimah, light the Shabbat candles, have an Aliyah, or open the ark, your image and voice will be broadcast on the live stream. Services can now be viewed live! Visit our Facebook page or streamspot.com.
