Judaism has one goal, we just might go about it in different ways.

of Moses, of God, to bring kindness to those who need it most.

Our one goal is Kedusha – holiness. Any of these are branches on that Etz Chaim, that tree of life.

Maybe you strive for a gastronomic Judaism, the one of your bubbe. You can smell her cooking just by opening a family cookbook, and no matzo ball soup ever holds a candle to hers. But you think of your heritage, your tradition, with brisket and kugel and a glass of Manischewitz.

Or maybe your Judaism is best accessed through ritual. You light the candles and braid the challah and come to shul. You have communication with God in the same acts that your ancestors have done since time immemorial.

This summer, we will continue in all of those. Through food and study and ritual and play. We will come together in parks and daven outside and connect online and in-person. Because we are an Etz Chaim, a holy community.

Or maybe your Judaism gets you politically active. You look to our books, our prophets of millennia past, who preach and beg for us to be kinder, gentler people. Who echo the words M

Or perhaps it is through study. Jews never feel like we know enough. We push education as there is always more to learn. We praise our teachers and their teachers, as we think of our students and their students. Links in a chain from God to Moses, somehow to me.

I recently had the privilege of attending Rabbi Rachel’s ordination at AJU. It was a moving ceremony watching Rachel and six of her colleagues officially become Rabbis. Having her as our intern at TEC for the past year has been a joy as so many of you would agree and she will be missed here, but it is abundantly clear that she is already loved by her new congregation in Maryland. Knowing Rabbi Rachel and watching her grow has truly been one of the very many things I count as an honor during my term as President and I have no doubt she is going to be a wonderful clergy member and role model to many young people. Please join us on Friday, June 3rd as we say farewell and wish Rabbi Rachel all the best at this Shabbat dinner.

We have kicked off a Capital Campaign which will result in a completely renovated Beit Midrash. Our building will more closely match who we are today and who we want to be moving forward with beautiful, efficient space for us to commune, hang out, socialize and possibly even work. Our committee has met with congregants with big, kind, generous hearts, who deeply love TEC and are committed to seeing it remain not just viable but become a beacon of Judaism in the Conejo Valley. The energy is palpable and the commitment to ensuring our future success has been significant and widespread across all the age ranges of our community. I am infinitely grateful to everyone who serves on this committee and to all the generous donors.

While I continue to look forward to the bright future that is in store for TEC , I would be remiss if I didn’t take this time to take stock in all that we did together over the past two years. When I took over the past two years, the pandemic was in its infancy, everything was strange and scary and yet NO wasn’t part of our vernacular. We figured it all out. Our professional staff is supreme, from moving schools and services to Zoom, as well as providing wonderful and engaging programming. We moved Friday night services to the parking lot, then to the tent, and finally back to our sanctuary. Our Directors kept our students learning in innovative ways, and as soon as it was safe to do so, brought them back to campus. Your Board of Directors met monthly on Zoom, with a few exceptions of in-person meetings, continuing to steer the ship and securing our future.

One of my favorite sayings is “There is no I in team” and I continue to believe deeply in teamwork and collaboration and there is no better team than Team TEC. From Rabbi Averbach, Debbie Blumenthal, Joyce Bronstein, Cindy Goldberg and Gideon Manzur, to the Office Staff to my “go-to mentors” - you all know who you are! I am eternally grateful to all of you for staying by my side and accepting my many phone calls and text messages. To my Advisory Council, you kept me on my toes and were always a couple of steps ahead which made planning for Board Meetings so much easier. I want to thank my EVP Extraordinaire and future TEC president, Eric Feigenbaum. Eric exemplifies the term mensch. For those who don’t know Eric, we may never have gotten to know one another as our kids are not the same age.

Or close to the same age! Our paths came together a couple of years ago when Eric graciously accepted his position of EVP, and not only am I richer for our friendship but TEC is gaining a President who has heart, knows the history of TEC well having grown up here, understands the culture, and is visionary in his thinking. Last but certainly not least I want to thank my husband, Captain Ron for his unyielding support not only the past two years but over my many years serving on the TEC board. Truly, Captain Ron has been a great, supportive First Husband! While not every day has been easy, serving as your TEC president has been one of life’s biggest privileges and I’m very grateful to have been offered the opportunity and even more grateful that I took on this challenge. I’ve gotten to know so many of your and it is these relationships I hold to so dearly. We are in excellent hands as I hand over the reigns to Eric and Felicia. I plan to stay engaged and active. If you know me a little, you know that Friday night services have always been my happy place, so I look forward to seeing everyone on campus and in services. If I can oﬀer one piece of advice: Don’t sit on the sidelines. Get involved, volunteer, even initially for an hour or two. You can always work your way up! I promise you, you will never be sorry, your life will be infinitely enriched and profoundly changed. With Gratitude, Shari

DEBBIE BLUMENTHAL The month of June will begin with our preschool celebration of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. The children will hear stories of Moses and the Ten Commandments and talk about the traditions of this holiday. We especially love to try new dairy recipes and enjoy yummy treats like blintzes and cheesecake! Next, we have our June Tot Shabbat scheduled for Friday, June 10th at 6:00 p.m. outdoors. We will enjoy Shabbat dinner, blessings, and music with Miss Bobbie. Please RSVP with Debbie if your family will be enjoying dinner with us. The cost for dinner is $18.00 per family. June is always bittersweet for the staff and I as we celebrate our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten graduates. Our last day of this school year is Friday, June 24th and we will be having graduations for our graduates and their families that day! We know that these children are all ready to spread their wings and

go off to their new schools however, we look forward to seeing many of them back in September when Religious School begins. In the month of July, we will begin our 2022-23 school year on July 5th! Many of our infants will be transitioning to our preschool toddler program and we will welcome many new students to Temple Etz Chaim Preschool and Infant Center. Our existing students will move up the next age group and begin a new year with lots of fun learning and new friends! We have high hopes that we will be able to resume many of our pre-COVID programming and welcome families to join us for holiday celebrations, school events and volunteering. We want to thank all our ECE families for their support and for sharing your children with us during this school year! We have enjoyed your children and we are so happy that you chose to be part of our Temple Etz Chaim family!

JOYCE BRONSTEIN Thank you to Felicia Toporoff, outgoing Vice President of Religious School Education. The Religious School has flourished with Felicia Toporoff as Vice President. I appreciate her dedication, knowledge, advice, support and leadership. Felicia, I hope you know that I enjoyed working with you these past four years. I value and am grateful for your efforts to ensure that our students have the finest Religious School education experience possible. I do not feel that it is enough to say thank you. You are wonderful in every way and have an incredible heart. My sincerest Todah Rabah for being a terrific Vice President of Religious School Education.

We were lucky to spend Yom Ha’atzmaut with friends, partake in Israeli food and spend the evening learning about, and tasting, kosher wines and the various wineries in Israel. Thank you to D-Cantor, Keith Miller, for sharing his expertise with us.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTOR

The new Vice President of Religious School Education is Adya Riss. I am thrilled that he has agreed to take on this new role. For many years, Adya has been a valued member of the Religious School Education Committee. His expertise, wisdom, and sense of direction will be invaluable towards achieving the goals of the Religious School. Adya is familiar with all aspects of the Religious School, and I am genuinely pleased to have him as Vice President of Religious School Education. At this time, I would like to sincerely thank Shari Mark, our outgoing Synagogue President, for her dedication and commitment to the Religious School and especially for all her work in ensuring the success of TEC. On May 22, we had an end of year picnic, held jointly with the Religious School, with games, arts and crafts, and Kona Ice. A good time was had by all. On May 31, we held our USY board elections for next year. There’s no USY without U and we need you to help plan the fun events and activities that you want to be part of. Shavuot is coming! Join Rabbi Averbach as we kick off the holiday on Saturday, June 4 with an evening of nourishment, both spiritual and physical. Come for the ice cream in Spiegel Hall at 6pm and stay for Havdalah.

Thank you to my amazing, loyal, and hard-working staff! You have fought your way through COVID and made this a fun school year for all! I have loved greeting the children every morning and watching them run to their teachers and into their classrooms with great enthusiasm. Lastly, I want to thank Joe Zwicker, my wonderful V.P. of Early Childhood Education who has spent so many hours working with me and helping me with our budget and programming over the past few years. He has always been there to answer questions, teach me, and give great advice. He has been a great supporter for our ECE Center and staff. I wish you and Terri all the best as you leave the TEC Board and enjoy yourselves, your family and many travel experiences together. We hope everyone has a fun and safe summer!

Grab your family and/or Havurah and come join our larger TEC family on Sunday mornings from 11 AM 1PM beginning on June 26 at the Thousand Oaks Community Center, July 31 at the Oak Canyon Community Park, and August 28 at the Moorpark Teaching Zoo.

JUDY GINDI

VP, SOCIAL ACTION socialaction@templeetzchaim.org I am excited to introduce Pam Friedman as the next VP of Social Action beginning July 1st. She has been my right-hand person for the last three years and I am looking forward to doing the same for her. She is extremely bright, dependable, wellorganized and a pleasure to work with. I look back on these past three years with a sense of pride in all that we have accomplished. The Social Action Committee, together with our congregants and the support of the Temple Board has been able to feed the Hungry every month and provide produce for patients of the Westminster Free Clinic. We organized numerous collections including for The Midnight Mission on Skid Row, Harbor House for the homeless, Shelter of Hope for animals, James Storehouse for foster children, Many Mansions for low- income families, etc. We purchased a patio set for Pi House, a home for aged-out-offoster-care young men. For local refugee families, we purchased gift cards, diapers and even a washing machine. Our Adopt-a-Family for the holidays program has become larger every year with the generosity of our temple members and friends We annually organize the collection of hundreds of gifts and gift cards for our local non-profit agencies. Social Action Shabbat has also been dear to my heart where we have participated in Friday night services with readings and speakers addressing social action issues. The two community webinars on ballot propositions and vaccine efficacy for covid have also been a sense of pride. A very special thing happened with this committee. Some of us are now meeting every Thursday afternoon to teach each other how to crochet for charity and have become close friends. How great is that? Everyone is always welcome to our Social Action Meetings and Crochet Group.

PRESIDENT, WOMEN OF TEC (WOTEC) womenoftec@templeetzchaim.org On May 15, WOTEC held our last scheduled event for the year, Mahjongg and Game Day. Once again, it was well attended and everyone had a lovely time; thanks to Dana Gallenberg for planning. Additionally, we held our elections for our slate of officers for 2022-23. Congratulations to all the ladies who will be keeping WOTEC in shape for the coming year, and a special Yasher Koach to Linda Hutchings, who will be WOTEC’s President for the next two years! A reminder for all of you who have simchas coming up (or just want to buy something special for yourself!) – our Judaica Shop is open for all your needs. Whether you have an upcoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah or wedding or need a housewarming gift, or whatever special occasion you might have, we have what you need! Please contact Ann Ross through the TEC office to set up an appointment. Please feel free to join us at any of our meetings or events. WOTEC’s board meetings are held monthly on the first Tuesday evening of every month. Please note that there will be no meeting in July; we will resume with our newly elected board on August 2nd. And on a personal note -- I have served the last four years as WOTEC President, and it has been my privilege to do so. I have loved meeting and getting to know so many people at our shul, and having the honor of working with so many really amazing women. I’ve gotten to know our Rabbi and staff, and have been so lucky to work with them over the years! Thank you all for the opportunity to serve our shul for these four years. I have truly loved every minute.

PRESIDENT, MEN'S CLUB colinclp@sbcglobal.net Shalom. This is my farewell column as Men’s Club President, which has been an incredibly gratifying experience. I became President late in 2020, when the pandemic and challenges were strong. Fortunately, we had an amazing Men’s Club Board, and they solved the issues we faced. Those talented, intelligent, and diligent men are: Mark Goldstein, Program Chair. Mark put together and organized a number of successful programs. Jonathan Hops, Religious Chair. Jon delivered inspirational D’Var Torah’s at our meetings and led our Men’s Club/WOTEC Shabbats. Irwin Barney, Treasurer. Irwin prepared our budgets and financial statements, and kept us financially responsible. Gary Katz, Recording Secretary and Past President. Gary recorded and distributed our minutes. He also distributed beer at Purim (a tradition that goes back to the days of Queen Esther). Jeff Landau, Communications Chair. Jeff streamlined our communications. Now the TEC staff receives just one communication about an issue, instead of several. Nate Stelman, Past President, and retired starting 3rd baseman from our old softball team. Nate steps up when a helping hand is needed. Among other things, Nate took over the Treasurer’s responsibilities when our Treasurer was out of town. Marc Firestone, Membership Chair and Past President. Our membership is strong and getting stronger. Ken Leon, Immediate Past President. Ken has done so much for Men’s Club over the years. A most delicious contribution: Ken serves as head chef, barbecuing steaks soaked in scotch! Benny Sommerfeld, Past President. master of all trades. Among everything else, Benny is our Hazzan at MC/WOTEC Shabbats.

CHAIR, SEARCH CLERGY COMMITTEE andrea@templeetzchaim.org Greetings TEC! As the Clergy Search Committee gears up for our second round of seeking a wonderful Cantorial counterpart to Rabbi Averbach, we wanted to take a moment to thank those who will help us on the pulpit this upcoming year. The Cantorial role in our temple will be filled with a number of outstanding voices, each helping to make it a more meaningful year. To everyone lending their voice to bring the melodies and songs of TEC alive this past year as well as this upcoming year, the CSC appreciates you!

Myles Simpson, Past President, Past FJMC International President, and doer of things that need doing. Myles was MC EVP when I joined and he has been my mentor ever since. I still turn to him for advice. Marc Cohn, Yellow Candle Chair. The Yellow Candles distributed by Men’s Club are so important in keeping the memories of the six million alive. Marc is vital in leading the organization, packing and distributing hundreds of candles every year. Alan Horwitz, Board Member at Large. Alan is our idea man. He is also there to help at many of our functions. Buzz Schoenkerman, Board Member at Large. Buzz is effective at asking pertinent questions such as, “Have you considered…?” His question about a flawed idea is, “What could possibly go wrong?” Buzz is active at nearly every Men’s Club event. Marshall Rosen, Shabbat Usher Chair. Marshall coordinates the ushering at TEC’s Friday night and Saturday morning services. Mark Zucherman, Scholar in Residence Chair and Past President. SIR is our signature program, and Mark has smoothly chaired this complex event for the past several years. Thank you all for reinvigorating Men's Club. Thank Silverstein and Alex Steinhauer for all the help!

My biggest thanks go out to MC First Lady Esther Pullan. This is the third time that I have had the honor of serving as President. It has been great! Esther, you have been more than amazingly supportive. The following sounds trite, but it is true. Esther’s love and support made it possible, and I dare say, successful. Esther, I love you, thank you, and couldn’t have done it without you!

The prospect of searching for a candidate for a second year in a row may seem like a daunting task to some. I can imagine that many of you are thinking, "why not just pick someone already?" It's the clarity of hindsight that helps us remember that just a few short years ago TEC was in this very same position when searching for a rabbi. It was because we waited that we ended up with the kind, charismatic, thoughtful leader that we have today. Good things come to those who wait!
