President - Shari Mark Happy New Year! It is 2021 and now 2020 is in our rearview mirror. A new year brings excitement and hope for what lies ahead…

A few months ago, a conversation took place about what else we can do for our members to add value to our relationship as well as create another income stream? Lots of ideas were voiced, but the one that actually is not only feasible but exciting is the creation of a Shabbat Box Dinner To Go. A different, delicious “homecooked” Shabbat dinner each week can be picked up on Friday afternoon and all you have to do is heat, serve and enjoy. No shopping, chopping or schlepping necessary! Sounds great, right? How much would you pay for that?! I’m serious, I’d love to hear from you, your opinion matters. Email me, text me, call me, make your voice heard!

Other ideas continue to surface and so much possibility exists. If you ever thought about wanting to get involved and to make a difference, now is the time. There is no limit to what we can do at TEC with more time and talent; our congregation has boundless versatility and big, giving hearts. I know this because our 2020 Kol Nidre pledges have been tallied and our ThankYou notes have been written; it is beyond inspiring.

Your continued and unwavering generosity and commitment to supporting Temple Etz Chaim knows no bounds and is it clear to me why our community is so strong and so special. I can say - without a shadow of a doubt - that the best

thing I did was to get involved in our Temple community so many years ago. It sounds cliche, I know, but some of my very best and closest relationships began here at Temple Etz Chaim and while it wouldn’t be honest if I said I’ve never looked back, I can say I would do it all over again.

So call, text or email me. Get involved and get to know your fellow congregants. You will be so glad you took this step as a fresh start to 2021.

I am hopeful to see our Religious School program back on campus as soon as it is safe for our students and teachers to gather once again.

I am especially looking forward to davening together and swaying to the beautiful music inside our sanctuary in the coming months. In the meantime, I wish you a happy new year, more joy and lots of hugs in 2021.

Rabbi Ari Averbach Back in April, I was interviewed by CBS News about how we would move forward with a seder during the shut-down.

The reporter in New York was, at the time, quarantining alone, planning on somehow joining her family in Michigan for their seder via video.

of the tunnel. With frontline workers and political leaders receiving the first round of vaccines, we are grateful.

We are grateful for the scientists and doctors who worked obscene hours to fast-track an end to this era. We are grateful to this community who stayed strong and connected, with drive-by pick-ups, video services, phone calls and emails. We are grateful to those who journeyed with us in reconsidering how to embrace each holiday, each educational hurdle, each lifecycle event.

It has been pointed out that the Pesach Seder is the most observed Jewish tradition, a time when even the unaffiliated feel like they are an integral part of the Jewish whole. Leaving anyone out of such a rite would be wrong, and we were lucky enough to include people across the country and around the world in our Shul’s retelling of our central story.

When this is over, which may still be many months away, we will need to come to terms with the new world we emerge into. We will finally need to mourn for those we lost, who never got an appropriate eulogy and Shiva. We will finally need to celebrate with the couples who got married with a fraction the number of friends and relatives to lift them in chairs. We will finally need to see those babies in person who we have been observing via Zoom, and we will finally need to hold each other in love and friendship - without masks and without fear.

I recently had a rare moment – being in the car without my kids and their delightful yet constant Jewish music app (JKids Radio) – and I heard the news for a few minutes.

The radio reporters were discussing how to enter the “holiday season” during a third wave of a pandemic, and most of the people they interviewed were Rabbis, who had navigated the Thanksgiving/Christmas dilemma months prior with Pesach.

We have a long journey ahead of us, but I look forward to a year of celebrating together.

In all these impossible months, when we did not think we had the fortitude to last even a few weeks in this unique setting, many of us are seeing a light at the end

Hazzan Pablo Duek On Facebook, I found a post by my friend Rabbi Silvina Chemen from Comunidad Bet El in Argentina, the community where I grew up as a child and teenager. Rabbi Chemen is one of many who have signed on to “Our Common Destiny,” a young organization with one main goal: uniting the Jewish people and looking forward to a common future in which we take responsibility for each other.

Principle 4: Light Unto the Nations: We share a commitment to doing good and strive to serve the world as a “Light unto the Nations.” We share a commitment to ensure that we do good throughout the world, uphold human values and basic morality and extend assistance and aid to all those in need as much as possible.

Principle 3: Strengthening Jewish Identity: We share a commitment to create more opportunities to deepen Jewish identity in all of its diverse expressions, to teaching and sharing knowledge of Jewish history and heritage, to preserving the memory, history and lessons of the Shoah (Holocaust) and to enhancing Jewish life throughout the world and in Israel.

Principle 5: World Development and Improvement: We share a commitment to the development of the world from the technological and scientific viewpoint, in a way that brings the entire world closer to a better future, as well as the commitment to preserve and protect human values and the continued existence of the world.

The Jewish community at large is no exception. That is why I celebrate their initiative to foster dialogue and mutual respect and understanding among us, embracing their Five Shared Principles of Responsibility and Action below: Principle 1: Security and Well-being: We share a mutual commitment and responsibility to act to bolster and protect all Jewish communities in the world as well as every Jew wherever they are. We also share a commitment to fight anti-semitism in all its forms and to strengthen the existence and prosperity of the State of Israel, to help keep its gates always open to every Jew of the world as a shared homeland for us all.

Happy New Year! I know that we have all been looking forward to the end of 2020 and new beginnings in 2021. We are so excited to welcome new friends as we return to school. In fact, we are opening three new classrooms this month as we welcome new and returning children to our preschool. Our school is growing

Before we know it, we will be talking about summer camp, registration for Fall, Kindergarten and Pre-K graduations, and more happy and exciting events coming up in 2021!

We look forward to a new year and moving through this Pandemic period and on to much safer times.

The staff and I appreciate your support and helping us with all our health and safety protocols, mask wearing, social distancing, and Brightwheel communication. We are so happy to be at school with your children and working very hard to keep everyone healthy and safe and have fun learning all at the same time.

Tu B’Shevat, the birthday of the trees, will be celebrated this month with planting in our garden boxes, singing songs and reading stories about trees and how important they are to our world. Outdoor learning is so good for all of us! The children love to visit our apple trees, pick up pine cones from the pine trees, and do creative art with all the different leaves around TEC.

Joyce Bronstein - Religious School Happy new year! As our Religious School reopens after our holiday break, we will continue with Zoom classes only. The staff and I are committed to educating our students with a love of Judaism and its teachings, and we appreciate all the love, support and positive comments from parents these past months.

Here are some ideas: • • • •

Later this month, we will be celebrating Tu B’Shevat – “The New Year of the Trees.” The literal meaning is “the 15th day of the month of Shevat.” The Torah itself is called a “Tree of Life,” as is our Synagogue, Temple Etz Chaim. When the Israelites entered Israel, G-d commanded them to plant trees, which became a tradition on Tu B’Shevat. Over the years, Jews have continued to purchase trees in Israel to help the forests flourish.

Tu B’Shevat is the perfect time to look at our world and make it better.

Keep the land free of litter and if you see litter, throw it away.

Use materials that can be recycled, like returnable soft drink bottles or aluminum cans.

Buy products made of recycled materials and recycle paper products.

Take a walk with your family and photograph some of the trees and plants you see.

Plant parsley to be used for Passover.

Eat foods that grow on trees, like apples, almonds, dates, figs, carobs and pomegranates.

Experience nature - really take the time to experience it.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference.

Shannon Tepfer - Youth Department January is a time that many of us view as a turning point for a new beginning in our lives.

It’s a reset of the calendar and the beginning of a new secular year. As we move past Hanukkah and all of our feelings and conversations about Rededication, we are now being thrust forward into a state of mind focused on Resolutions. The decisions we make now for our year ahead are based on reflection of our past year and want to improve and reconnect.

Let’s use this New Year to focus on connections and friendships, reaching out to people we may have lost touch with and regaining a sense of normalcy in our lives. Our TEC USY Chapter is here and ready to help facilitate these connections and conversations. Our current Board and USY participants have done a great job in 2020 keeping in touch with one another and making each other feel heard and connected during such a hard year while participating in fun events every Thursday.

If your child is not already a part of our Youth Program, I invite them to join one of our lounges to see what it’s all about and to help launch connectivity into the New Year. We have something for everyone and plan each event with purpose, engagement and connection in mind.

Norman M. Cohen is the Founding Rabbi Emeritus of Bet Shalom Congregation, in Minnetonka, Minnesota. He received his bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and earned a Master’s degree, Ordination, and a Doctorate of Divinity from HUC in Cincinnati, and has served on the faculties of St Olaf College, St Catherine University, Macalester College, Xavier University and United Theological Seminary.

Rabbi Cohen is the author of the book Jewish Bible Personages in the New Testament He also wrote the book Sacred Architecture: The Building of Bet Shalom about the intentional symbolic architecture of his congregation. He has authored numerous published articles and sermons including chapters in the book Keeping the Faith in Rabbinical Education and in Text Messages, and an essay he co-authored in Society and Business Review: Leviticus on how to make and distribute profit. He is working on a book, Stereotypes and Misconceptions Jews and Christians Hold About Each Other. He has appeared as scholar in residence in over two dozen cities across North America.

Tikkun Olam Social Action - Judy Gindi The Social Action Committee Is grateful to Temple Etz Chaim and Friends for your Incredible generosity, this holiday season. Your donations to the Adopt-a Family program has made a huge difference in our local community. Like the Hanukkah candles, you provided some light for these families during these dark times.

Because of you: Harbor House will be able to provide $2,600 in gift cards to feed, clothe and provide gifts to the homeless. $2,500 in cash will be used to keep the gas and electricity on or pay someone’s rent * TEC was the largest donor to local low-income families at Many Mansions We provided gifts to 85 children and 68 parents * All 38 Seniors enjoyed holiday gifts in the Meals on Wheels program and a check for $2,500 * Over 150 toys were donated to the Westminster Free Clinic * 11 children and 6 parents from TEC’s Religious School and Preschool also received gifts Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 27th at 7:30pm, after Minyan. Temple Etz Chaim Live Stream!

At Temple Etz Chaim, all Shabbat Services held in the Paskow Sanctuary are live streamed. Live Streaming allows those in our community who otherwise cannot physically come to the Temple to participate in the Shabbat experience. It also affords B’nai Mitzvah families with out-of-town guests who cannot make it to services the opportunity to participate in the simcha.
