Myra Lurie, an attorney, has served the Beverly Hills community in so many ways; she is currently Executive Vice President of TEBH and is a City Health and Safety Commissioner. David Goldman, also an attorney, is the President of Executive Car Leasing Company, a 65 year old family business and automotive industry leader. Myra is the immediate past president of Beverly Hills Rotary Club, a board member of both the Maple Counseling Center and Theatre 40, and a former Beverly Hills School Board President. David, an active member of the Beverly Hills community for over 30 years, dedicates his time and resources to many political and philanthropic endeavors. As multi-generational members of TEBH, Myra & David share their family tradition of tikkun olam with their sons, Max and Zack.
Lisa Licht is a highly successful marketing executive who, for the past 30 years, has worked for many high-profile companies including: Fox, Hasbro, Mattel, Yahoo, and LiveNation. She has mentored her teams to great professional achievements and has inspired thousands as a motivational speaker at career conferences. Andy Licht is a prominently recognized film producer and is a well-established real estate investor. Lisa has been very active in the Beverly Hills schools for 19 years and truly gives back to her community. Andy has served the Beverly Hills community his entire life, from the Little League fields to City Hall boardrooms, where he now serves on the Planning Commission. As long-time members of TEBH, their children, Lucy, Danny and Joey, have become B’nai Mitzvah in our synagogue.

Cuba

When congregants, friends and family asked how my trip to Cuba was I saw their eyes light up with excitement. Thoughts of colorful 1951 Fords, dark rum, pungent cigars, the cups of strong yet ever so sweet coffee, mouthwatering mojitos lingering on the lips, and dancers swinging their hips moving to the beat of Cuban guitars and drums filled their imaginations. This was the Cuba I thought I knew, but my answer to those that asked was “it’s complicated.”
I registered for the American Conference of Cantor’s first ever Humanitarian Mission to Cuba with an adventurous spirit to learn more about Cuba, experience her culture and meet the Jewish community there. But, also to find out more about the real Cuba and what it might need from me. I felt fortunate that with this trip I would go beyond the cigar smoke and sweet rum drinks and see what lies beyond my friends’ imaginations and the Cuban Tourism Department publicity. From my arrival, I quickly saw a slice of real Cuba: the crumbling homes, stray animals, the horse and buggies that run the roads, and even the lack of toilet seats and toilet paper! Cuba, in its disrepair, was full of complexity. I was told by our tour guide that while over 96% of Cubans own their own home, they do not have access to materials to maintain the structures built 100 or more years ago. Although there are some hints of progressive improvements under their new leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, the impact of Fidel and Raul Castro’s decisions to create and maintain a minimalist, communist society will last for decades.

Along our journey throughout the island we encountered some of the most incredible people, experienced remarkable and inspiring music—all of which added to its aura of complexity. We met native pottery makers, artists, and costumed professional people who charge tourists for photographs. We experienced the music of Cantores de Cienfuegos, a choir of 12 professional singers, who are lovingly etched in my memory as some of the most talented and enthusiastic people I have ever met. We witnessed a rehearsal for the Orchestra De Guitares, an orchestra of 100 teen guitar players. We went to Campas de Havana, a company dedicated to preserving the ancient art of Afro-Cuban rhythm. It was clear that artists, celebrities and athletes were treated with reverence, which means, higher pay, privileges to travel outside of the country, and permits to import expensive cars into the country. Alternatively, most of the country works directly for the government. They receive food rations. Their utilities and health care are covered by the government, yet medication is not. Which brings me back to what Cuba needs. This humanitarian mission brought the equivalent of seventy suitcases full of
The reality is that there are only 1500 Jews left in Cuba. Between 1914 and 1961 there were as many as 15,000 Jews in Cuba. What remains are small, close-knit, and proud communities. We visited the small Jewish community of 20 members in Cienfuegos and the largest Jewish Community in Havana with hundreds of members. In each discussion, we were curious to know of the sort of oppression or anti-Semitism they experienced living in Cuba. They all explained that they have always felt safe to be Cuban Jews. This trip was life changing. Yes, I did enjoy some delicious rum, a mojito or two and some incredible pulled beef. Yet it was witnessing what is beneath the veil of food and drink that truly changed me forever. To see and feel the tension that exists in such a tiny complex island kept me thinking throughout my time there. When people ask if they should go to Cuba, I definitely think they should. Go. Learn. Be Inspired. Travel to appreciate the culture. Talk to the locals. Find out exactly what they need and find a way to get it there. I believe for one person to embark on tikkun olam, all it takes is a small step forward.
medicine and supplies to the Cuban people. The seven other Cantors and seventy trip participants brought vital supplies we here in the United States often take for granted. Cuba is in dire need of medication to treat common diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as simple ailments like the common cold.
To help Cuba, it starts with bringing one bottle of Advil for a family, one new pair of tap shoes for a budding dancer, or a pack of bandaids for a school.
At its core, this trip was an opportunity to engage in tikkun olam—to help heal the world. Traveling to Cuba allowed us all to express one of the most important Jewish values to a beautiful community both Jewish and not.
If there is anything I learned, it is that you can start to make a difference one person at a time. If you are lucky to visit Cuba yourself, may it be a time of reflection—maybe with a little rum to clear the mind. Temple Topics

Dear fabulous Temple Emanuel community, I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and let you know how blessed I feel to be the newest addition to the TEBH family. I previously served Kehillat Israel in Pacific Palisades for 10 years and am so fortunate to have found another warm, nurturing synagogue to help operate efficiently and effectively. I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio, did my undergrad at Indiana University and came out to USC for grad school. When I’m not “doing Jewish” I am a composer/musician and avid sports enthusiast. I have two fabulous children: Clara is 12 and Izzy is almost 10. They go to school at Brawerman East at Wilshire Blvd. Temple. ChaiVillageLA Helping to Create Other Synagogue Villages Did you know that there are now over 200 Villages in the United States, yet only one is a Synagogue Village? It’s our very own ChaiVillageLA. This collaboration of adults ages 50 to 99 has become an integral part of the lives of many congregants at Temple Emanuel and Temple Isaiah. Ever since it became apparent that our Synagogue Village was going to be successful, ChaiVillageLA leaders have been wondering whether they could help other synagogues set up Villages. Luckily for us, Jewish Venture Philanthropy Fund (JVPF) thought we could. This group of LA philanthropists made a financial commitment to help us reach out to other synagogues. To kick off this effort, we recently hosted an event for leaders of 22 area congregations, introducing them to the Synagogue Village concept—and there was great interest. With the help of the JVPF grant, soon ChaiVillageLA expects to be just one of many synagogue Villages. But we’ll always be the first!
ChaiVillageLA is part of the rapidly growing Village Movement—it’s not a place; it’s a community led by adults who share their optimism, skills, support, and expertise with each other to joyfully navigate the next steps in their lives. ChaiVillageLA is a collaborative program of Temple Isaiah and Temple Emanuel, grounded in Jewish values.
A Moment of Change
Reflections of the L’Taken RAC Trip by Eva Levin
I didn’t know what to expect. I didn't expect that I would get so much closer with my friends or make so many new friends. I didn't expect to learn so much. I certainly didn't expect that the L’Taken trip would open so many doors for me. At the end of January, 19 of my temple friends and I attended the L’Taken Seminar through the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism. Five full days of learning about climate change in the nation’s capital, and lobbying in Congress. To some it may seem like a daunting task. I am here to tell you it definitely was. I was fortunate enough to visit the Vote Climate PAC and also got the opportunity to see climate change through a Catholic lens when we met with the leader of the Catholic Climate Covenant. Both meetings opened my eyes to the true problems we are facing as a global community, and what legislators were doing to solve it. Over the next few days, I attended sessions about climate change and the refugee crisis, through both an educational and Jewish lens. I participated in a lobbying simulation, and attended a seminar on immigration. Then came the big day. Along with a group from my trip, I had to write a speech. Even though I had hours of free time, none of it mattered. I was out of my mind with worry and practicing my speech in the dark at 3:00 am The next morning, I got up, put on my nice dress, and went to the Capitol to voice my concerns to my senator. Our speech finished second out of hundreds of groups. I don't remember much about speaking. I remember seeing Kamala Harris’s office and getting super excited. I remember the humongous Calder sculpture in the Hart Senate Building. I remember my hands shaking as I prepared to speak. And then, it was over. I was done. I went back and sat down next to my friends. As I watched other people stand up and speak about what they were passionate about, I felt inspired. I knew that in this moment, I could make a change.
