Passover Message of

For thousands of years, the Jewish people have set aside one night every year to retell the epic story of our origin: The exodus from Egypt. In Hebrew, it is Y’tziat Mitzrayim. Literally, “coming out of the narrow places.” It marked the beginning of a quality that has followed us throughout the ages, the attribute of survival. Our story of survival began with four hundred years of slavery in Egypt, then we endured forty years in the wilderness, the annihilation of the northern kingdom and the destruction of two holy Temples. We have struggled in the Diaspora to find our place, and yet for two millennia we survived as strangers in strange lands, through expulsions, pogroms, and the holocaust. Each of

those experiences have been the narrow places of our history, our “Egypts.”

From last spring to this, we have all experienced our world as the most narrow of places. The pandemic has kept us in our homes, to watch, from a distance, the social change, racial discord, and political mayhem that has characterized the last 12 months. It is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the redemption from Egypt, to relive and reflect upon the story of slavery to freedom, from darkness to light, and carry within us hope for the future. our story as survivors, so that we can gain strength and resolve to reach beyond the narrow places in our lives today, and lead us to be redeemed in our own lives. This year, we remember, we reflect, and we retell the story of survivors, the Jewish people.
