On behalf of my dedicated clergy colleagues, Rabbi Sarah Bassin, Cantor Lizzie Weiss, and our new educator, Rabbi Adam Lutz, along with Rabbi Emerita Laura Geller, our Executive Director Eric Reiter, and the entire staff—I would like to welcome you to our prayer-learning-engagement booklet for the year. This year, we spoke and sang about our theme, “In a place where no one is acting human, strive to be human,” and will continue to explore this idea in the year to come. Our world is filled with people and places where humanity has given way to insensitivity and cruelty, where fear and xenophobia, uncivil behavior and mistrust have replaced civility and compassion. We need a return to humane conduct in all of our endeavors: in the workplace, our personal lives, and in our society at large.

at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills

Many of our sermons, classes, school activities, and writings will examine what it means to Strive to Be Human. Attributed to the great sage Hillel (Pirkei Avot 2:5), the theme affords us the opportunity to explore what it means to be a human being in today’s world. Strive to Be Human can be found in civic discourse and social change, interpersonal relationships and personal conduct, standing up to injustice and forging new ways to approach difficult decisions and conversations. The duty of every Jew is to Strive to Be Human when we see inhumane treatment of other people and our planet. We read in the Torah, “Do not stand idly by” (Lev. 19:16), and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18), and “Cursed be the one who subverts the rights of the stranger, the orphan, and the widow” (Deut.

27:18-19). These and other values from the Torah compel us to act as humanely as possible, to act with compassion and empathy—whether we are talking about global societal issues, or the most intimate of relationships.

In the pages of this booklet you will find descriptions of the planned programs, services, learning, and community engagement opportunities happening at Temple Emanuel. We are continuing to offer programs with special musical guests, intriguing and challenging conversations, learning opportunities that are based on the yearly theme, and unique Shabbat services ranging from celebrating America to a string trio playing love songs. Our NextStage programs, including the innovative and evergrowing ChaiVillageLA, give our empty nesters social and practical opportunities to meet the challenges of aging. We hope that you take the time to look through these activities and occasions, and put them in your calendar. Please look through this booklet and explore, connect, and engage with the Temple Emanuel community this year. Strive to participate and feel the power that comes from Judaism and our synagogue.

Strive to be Human can help us all to live our lives with the highest level of integrity and love. Let us join together this year to Strive to make the world, our community, and our synagogue a place where humanity can flourish.

About Temple Emanuel Since our beginning in 1938, Temple Emanuel of Beverly

Hills has been a diverse community where people come to mark life's passages and discover a Jewish way of making sense of this world. As a modern Reform Jewish congregation in Los Angeles, we take our inspiration from Torah and sacred texts in order to discover what is relevant and enriching to our lives.

There are many different doors that open to a more meaningful Jewish life. Our goal is to be a Mezuzah at those doorways, greeting and welcoming you. Whether you are a Jew by birth, by choice, or part of an interfaith family, we encourage you to explore your own Jewish path within the embrace of our nurturing, intergenerational community.

Saturday Mornings 10:00 am, Bess P. Maltz Center Our weekly Shabbat service is a blend of traditional prayer, nusach (musical themes), and guitar-led melodies that creates a unique and participatory worship experience.

Congregants volunteer for service honors, chant the weekly Torah portions, and regularly celebrate life-cycle events. The service is highlighted by a text study that sparks conversation which often flows into our delicious Kiddush lunch.

Shabbat in the Park

A Hands-On Musical and Artistic Shabbat Experience for Young Families Saturdays, December 2, February 3 9:00 am, Beverly CaÑon Park Shabbat in the Park is Temple Emanuel's newest Shabbat experience that encourages participants to dance and sing out loud. Our amazing TEBH clergy lead us in story and song in a beautiful outdoor setting. Bring a picnic breakfast and some friends.

Special guest ShirLaLa will join us February 3 as part of our Musical Artist Series. Co-sponsored with PJ Library.

Bring your baby to the Sukkah for a blessing to celebrate life and family, followed by Shabbat Unplugged at 8:00 pm.

Together, let us take out each scroll, rejoice, and dance with the Torah to the music of the Mostly Kosher klezmer band.

Family Service A lively, informal service, recommended for families with children 6–12 years old. Please note that for your convenience, Temple Emanuel will provide a separate play area near the service location, for families to accompany their children who are under the age of 6.

Tot Service A 30-minute prayer experience for families with toddlers and preschoolers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings.

Contemplative Service Combines chanting, silence, meditation, and only a few core prayers from the traditional liturgy, with no prayer book. On Yom Kippur, the contemplative service will end in time to attend the Yizkor service.

Tashlich A ceremony on the beach where we symbolically cast off our sins takes place on Thursday, September 21 at 5:00 pm. Bring your own pieces of bread, and a picnic supper. Location: Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon (Lifeguard station T-8). No ticket required. Paid parking available on site.

Yom Kippur Afternoon Forum

Building Healthier Communities: A Holistic Approach to the Challenge of Hate and Violence (A Behrendt Conversation) Religious institutions, schools, and healthcare professionals are now seen as crucial elements of efforts to prevent hate and ideological violence in our nation. Join Los Angeles government and law enforcement leaders who represented our city on a State Department Delegation to Europe as they discuss best practices and the role of religious communities in keeping Los Angeles safe.

Striving to Be Human: Music, Meditation & Story Jonah Takes on the City of Nineveh

Through music, spoken word, and meditation we examine the story of Jonah as he fulfills his duty to be a prophet to Nineveh. How does it feel to stand up and speak for humanity, and what would happen if everyone heeded the moral truths that are easy to ignore?

Spoken word by Rabbi Jonathan Aaron, with meditation facilitated by writer, life coach, and co-creator of the Temple Emanuel High Holy Days Contemplative Services, Ryan Weiss.

Program Descriptions Activities for Children The Children's Program runs during afternoon adult services on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Our complimentary Children’s Program for ages 3–10 runs concurrently with afternoon adult services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Day, only. Children will experience the High Holy Days in an engaging and creative atmosphere while their parents attend services.

Pre-registration is required, as space is limited.

• To enroll, email HHD@tebh.org. Drop off will begin 15 minutes prior to the scheduled service start time. Snacks will be provided during the Children’s Program for your child(ren). For the safety of all children, do not bring your own childcare providers to the Children’s Program. Please note that all children must be fully potty trained to participate in the Children’s Program (no exceptions). You must remain on temple premises while your child(ren) is/are participating in the Children's Program.

• The Tot Service is ideal for children younger than age 6 (pre-readers). As this is a popular service, we recommend that you arrive early.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Due to the quiet, reflective atmosphere we create at Neilah, please do not bring young children or babies to this service. Children ages 3–10 should attend the Children’s Program during the Neilah Service; alternatively, parents who want to be with their children can worship together in the Belle Chapel, where the Neilah Service will be broadcast. Both parents and children will be invited into the Corwin Family Sanctuary at the end of the Neilah Service to hear the shofar and participate in Havdallah.

High Holy Days Food & Diaper Drive

Join us for the culmination of the High Holy Days preparation period, with a service and study session on Saturday, September 16 at 8:00 pm in Bess P. Maltz Center.

We encourage you to bring a bag of nonperishable food items and/or a package of diapers during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Grocery bags will be available at all services during the High Holy Days. Food will be donated to a local food bank, while diapers (sizes 1 and up only, please) will be donated to Tiyya, an organization that serves and supports refugees.

Sukkot Festival Service Come pray with us, Thursday, October 5 at 10:00 am in the Belle Chapel and enjoy Kiddush in the Sukkah.

Celebrations Hanukkah Celebration Featuring Saul Kaye

Delve into Shabbat with a Festive Hanukkah Twist Friday, December 15 6:15 pm, Corwin Family Sanctuary Let us light up your night at our Hanukkahinspired Shabbat. Sing with our special musical guest, Saul Kaye, and become a part of our festivities on Friday, December 15 at 6:15 pm. Make the night your perfect excuse to eat as many latkes and sufganiyot as you can. We'll have Hanukkah games, crafts, and other fun surprises. Don't forget to BYOM (Bring Your Own Menorah) and witness our very own miraculous festival of lights.

Holidays & More Mishloach Manot

Beginning the Week of February 26 Mishloach Manot, the sharing of treats during Purim, has been a tradition since the days of Esther and Mordechai. At Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, we continue this mitzvah of sharing love and friendship among our family, friends, clergy, and staff, with our annual gifts of Mishloach Manot (Purim "baskets"). Our holiday treats, delivered by volunteers and staff to every member of our community, are a great way for us to share the Purim spirit with one another.

Saturday, May 19 7:30 pm, Bess P. Maltz Center At Temple Emanuel, we celebrate the ageold custom of studying all night with a late study session culminating in the reading of the Ten Commandments.

The Beverly Hills Ball is our major fundraiser of the year, honoring the philanthropic efforts of the temple and Beverly Hills community members. Both the community and congregation have been incredibly supportive of this fundraiser with their attendance, tribute journal honors, and silent auction donations. Look forward to a night of fine dining, spectacular entertainment, dancing, and a lively party.

In our two year Adult B’nai Mitzvah program learn Hebrew and deepen your connection to prayer and the Torah. The first part of the experience is a “Hebrew Crash Course” on reading and basic grammar. The second section of the program involves reading and understanding the Hebrew prayers. The last segment is learning to read from the Torah and write a d’var Torah (a short sermon), on the specific portion. The course culminates in a B’nai Mitzvah service, where participants lead prayers, read from Torah, and deliver their d'vrei Torah in front of the congregation, family, and friends.

Adult Education

An 18-week exploration for individuals and couples interested in deepening their understanding of what Living Judaism means to them. Designed for those interested in conversion, as well as those who simply want to learn more about Jewish holidays, life cycle ceremonies, values, history, liturgy, and texts. Whether you are new to Judaism, interested in converting, a partner of a Jew (with no plans to convert) or a practicing Jew who wants to learn more, all are welcome to come and learn.

What does it mean to Strive to Be Human in a world which all too often challenges our humanity? What does it even mean to be human? In the book of Genesis we read, "And God blew into the nostril the breath of life, neshimat chayim, and the human became a living being."

This text makes a distinction between a "human" and a "living being." The nefesh, (the breath or soul), is the key ingredient which transforms a "human" into a "living being." This text from Genesis teaches that "humans" cannot transform into "living beings" without a connection to our soul.

In this course we will "strive" and "struggle" with our own souls and our sense of purpose in the world as we uncover what it means to be "living beings."

We all know that there are incredible righteous Jews and non-Jews who have been at the forefront of leading their generations in striving toward being more human.

Strive Not to Gossip With Rabbi Jonathan Aaron Tuesday, January 23 & 30, February 6 7:00 pm, Davidson-Sheffer Hall When is it permissible to speak about someone who isn't there? When is it forbidden to spread information about another person – whether it is true or not?

Incorporating the teachings of the Chafetz Chaim (the Jewish “Bible” about gossip), Rabbi Aaron will explore the subtleties of what is considered in Jewish tradition to be one of the most dangerous of human behaviors, “Lashon Hara” (the evil tongue).

It may be impossible to stop all of our talk about others, but striving not to speak ill about others can help any of us to live a more peaceful and tranquil existence.

In this three-part class, come discover the heroic individuals who are at the forefront of making a difference in our world. Explore the story of a new leader each week as we delve into the amazing lives of modern-day heroes.

Lifelong Learning Modern Hebrew Beginners 1

2nd Wednesday of the Month 10:45 am, Belle Chapel Food is fuel for our bodies as knowledge is food for the brain. Join our monthly social and informal luncheon for mature adults that begins with an invited speaker followed by a discussion with the clergy.

Students with no prior knowledge in Hebrew learn to read modern text, write in cursive, and converse while developing listening and speaking skills. Emphasis is on communicative skills as well as reading and listening comprehension.

Temple Emanuel Soul Singers Founded in 2015 by Cantor Lizzie Weiss, Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills' Soul Singers are a group of 3rd – 7th grade religious school students that lead our inspirational Shabbat Spark services, perform at holiday celebrations and lead our congregation in song and prayer throughout the year. The group practices during the last hour of religious school on Sundays during electives from 12:15 pm – 1:00 pm and occasionally on a weeknight in preparation for special events.

Temple Emanuel Intergenerational Choir For over 30 years, the Temple Emanuel Intergenerational Choir has been the prime source of musical leadership for the Temple Emanuel High Holy Day Family Services and leads our congregation in spiritual song. The Intergenerational Choir also performs for festival services, concerts, and special events during the year.

NextStage: Temple Emanuel’s Boomers & Beyond Initiative is designed to address the needs of community members who are fifty and above. The Most Important Conversation You Will Ever Have We hold several gatherings to discuss important end-of-life issues and wishes about Advance Health Care Directives with members and their families. We welcome congregants to discussions regarding Jewish views about end-of-life decisions, choices a family needs to make in planning a funeral, and how to prepare an ethical will for those who come after you. Wise Aging Groups Explore the opportunities and wrestle with the challenges that come along with growing older in an intimate four to six session group led by a congregant facilitator.

This free program will feature surgeon/writer Atul Gawande, MD, MPH. Dr. Gawande will focus on the value of community and choice as we grow older, the same value that gave birth to the village movement 15 years ago.

Following the program, Temple Emanuel's Rabbi Emerita Laura Geller and Temple Isaiah's Rabbi Zoë Klein will lead a discussion.
