Welcome to the year 5779 (2018-2019) at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills. On behalf of my dedicated clergy colleagues, Rabbi Sarah Bassin and Cantor Lizzie Weiss, our Rabbi Educator Adam Lutz, Rabbi Emerita Laura Geller, and our Interim Executive Director Ellis Kirschenbaum and the entire staff, I’d like to welcome you to the prayer-learning-engagement booklet for the year.

In the pages of this booklet, you will find all of our planned programs, services, and learning and community engagement opportunities. We hope that you take the time to look through our many offerings and put in your calendar the activities and occasions where you would like to connect with Temple Emanuel. Notice that we are continuing to offer special musical guests, challenging conversations, clergy learning opportunities in 3 or 4 session mini-classes based upon this year’s theme, and unique Shabbat services ranging from honoring America, to celebrating our pets, to a string trio playing love songs. We will also be presenting the world premiere of a musical, starting our groundbreaking Genesis supplemental conservatory educational offering, and continuing our unique programs for young families with children. Our innovative and ever-growing ChaiVillageLA programs give our empty nesters social and practical programming to meet the challenges of aging gracefully. All we ask is that you participate and feel the power that comes from Judaism and our synagogue.

Our theme this year comes from the Talmud, Shavuot 39a. The Gemara asks: Is the whole world punished on account of one person’s transgression [against the Torah]? Then answers: When people are spiritually stumbling over each other, all suffer. The Talmud teaches, Kol Yisrael Aravim zeh ba zeh, all of Israel is responsible for each other. This translation reflects our Reform Jewish values of 5779, where the responsibility to look out for our world and all its inhabitants rests upon everyone. Therefore, our theme is, “We are all responsible for each other.”

Our sermons, classes, school activities, and writings will all engage in understanding what it means for all of us to be responsible and responsive to others. For thousands of years, our tradition has maintained the importance of taking care of the stranger, the orphan and the widow, people who are not able to care for themselves. The idea calls upon us to take more responsibility for the welfare of others: to visit the sick, comfort the mourner, and help our fellow family members in need. But it also calls on us to take care of those less fortunate, those without power, and those who are being treated unjustly. This year, we will explore what our responsibilities are to those whom we love and engage with every day, as well as to the nameless faces of our fellow human beings around the world who need us to help make their lives whole. Let us come together to explore and act upon our Jewish values and continue our support for others.

ABOUT TEMPLE EMANUEL

Since our beginning in 1938, Temple Emanuel of

Beverly Hills has been a diverse community where people come to mark life's passages and discover a Jewish way of making sense of this world. As a modern Reform Jewish congregation in Los Angeles, we take our inspiration from Torah and sacred texts in order to discover what is relevant and enriching to our lives.

There are many different doors that open to a more meaningful Jewish life. Our goal is to be a mezuzah at those doorways, greeting and welcoming you. Whether you are a Jew by birth, a Jew by choice, or part of an interfaith family, we encourage you to explore your own Jewish path within the embrace of our nurturing, intergenerational community.

Temple Emanuel’s signature in-theround service features spiritually uplifting meditation and poetry. Come and feel the energy of this wonderful service while listening to music from our acoustic band.

Enjoy a thoughtful short teaching by our clergy, or diverse and engaging special guests. New this year, join us for wine and cheese at 7:15 pm in the Belle Chapel before each Shabbat Unplugged!

Jam out with our electric six-piece rock band, student Soul Singers, Junior Cantors, and Religious School students as they lead us in our family-oriented service.

In conjunction with Shabbat Spark, this experience is tailored to families with toddlers and pre-readers. Sing along with our clergy and listen to stories during our dinner at 5:30 pm. Shabbat Spark is a great opportunity to let your children dance and pray in an energetic and fun environment.

S H A B B AT Morning Services Expression of Soul

Our weekly Shabbat service is a blend of traditional prayer, nusach (musical themes), and guitar-led melodies that creates a unique and participatory spiritual experience. Congregants volunteer for service honors, chant the weekly Torah portions, and regularly celebrate life cycle events. The service is highlighted by a text study that sparks conversation among our community, often flowing into our delicious Kiddush lunch.

Shabbat in the Park encourages participants to dance and sing out loud. Our amazing TEBH clergy lead us in story and song in a beautiful outdoor setting. Bring a picnic breakfast and some friends. In partnership with PJ Library, and the Jewish Federation of LA Shabbat in the Park is geared toward families with children 6 years old and younger, but all are welcome.

Bim Bam Shabbat is a Friday morning experience where we sing, play, and enjoy a story with Cantor Lizzie Weiss and Rabbi Adam Lutz. This service is designed for families with children 0-2 years old.

Sunday, September 30 4:30 pm, Early Childhood Center, Courtyard (In the Sukkah) On Sukkot, we welcome the first fruits of the harvest, and in that spirit we gather to bless our children born in the past year. Bring your baby to the Sukkah for a blessing to celebrate life and family, followed by Simchat Torah at 5:00 pm.

We officially end the High Holy Days season as we open up the Torah all the way around our sanctuary, and dance the night away! Our 6th and 7th grade Religious School students will teach us about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Featuring the Urban Voices Project: bringing the healing power of music to those disenfranchised with homelessness, mental illness, and unemployment.

A BBQ starts off the evening, followed by a special service filled with American songs, stories, and a moment devoted to all the Jewish men and women who gave their lives for our country. Sukkot Festival Service with Yizkor

Beginning the Week of February 21

Simchat Torah Festival Service with Yizkor

Mishloach Manot, the sharing of treats during Purim, has been a tradition since the days of Esther and Mordechai. At Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, we continue this mitzvah of sharing love and friendship among our family, friends, clergy, and staff, with our annual gifts of Mishloach Manot (Purim "baskets"). Our holiday treats, delivered by volunteers and staff to every member of our community, are a great way for us to share the Purim spirit with one another.

On Monday, October 1, we will begin the Torah again and recite Yizkor.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot

Saturday, June 8 7:00 pm, Bess P. Maltz Center The Beverly Hills Ball is our major fundraiser of the year, honoring the philanthropic efforts of the temple and Beverly Hills community members.

Both the community and congregation have been incredibly supportive of this fundraiser with their attendance, tribute journal honors, and silent auction donations. Look forward to a night of fine dining, spectacular entertainment, dancing, and a lively party.

At Temple Emanuel, we celebrate the age-old custom of studying all night with a late study session culminating in the reading of the Ten Commandments.

LIFELONG LEARNING Adult Education Our outstanding adult education programs reflect our commitment to studying Torah and deepening our connection to Jewish life and tradition. Lifelong learning strengthens us and makes for a richer Jewish experience. Through our classes, support groups, trips, and volunteer opportunities, we strive to deepen our members' connections to each other, to their community, and to the ongoing story of the Jewish people.

An 18-week exploration for individuals and couples interested in deepening their understanding of what Living Judaism means to them. Designed for those interested in conversion, as well as those who simply want to learn more about Jewish holidays, life cycle ceremonies, values, history, liturgy, and texts. Whether you are new to Judaism, a partner of a Jew (with no plans to convert), all are welcome to come and learn.

Behrendt Conversation Series #MeToo Learning Group and Task Force

Through the Eyes of Rashi Sundays, Starting October 7 9:30 am, Clergy Office Library

Engage in an ongoing discussion of the Torah text as seen through the eyes of scholars across generations, from Talmudic to modern times. Guided by respected teacher Dr. Chaim Plotzker, learn how the ancient texts and interpretations are relevant to our modern lives. Introduction to Judaism

Thursday, October 25; Thursday, November 15; and Tuesday, December 4, Location upon RSVP The Behrendt Conversation Series models how to engage in difficult conversations by inviting speakers with different ideologies. This year we will apply these lessons to a single issue: the aftermath of the #MeToo movement. This movement has highlighted sexual violence and challenged assumptions about our behavior. We are assembling a learning group and task force of congregants to communicate concerns of women and men. Apply to join at tebh.org/MeToo.

Genesis Ideology by David H. Aaron Wednesdays, Starting October 3 7:00 pm, Davidson-Shefer Hall

In his new book Genesis Ideology: Essays on the Uses and Meanings of Stories, Dr. David H. Aaron, Professor of Hebrew Bible and History of Interpretation at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and brother of Rabbi Jonathan Aaron, explores the first book of the Torah. How did Genesis set the foundation for Jewish culture? How do the stories in Genesis reflect the history of the Israelites? What makes the Torah sacred? What can we learn today from reading these stories?

Using the extraordinary material she learned at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem during summer 2018, Rabbi Sarah Bassin will lead discussions about who we want to be and what we are responsible for in an era where the rules of civil society are breaking down. RSVP to Events@tebh.org.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

SOCIAL JUSTICE WORK

Our congregation is proud to support the amazing activism and volunteer work spearheaded by members of our community. Currently, under the banner of our new centralized social justice group, Na'aseh V'Nishmah, we are partnering with five different projects taking on everything from refugee resettlement in Los Angeles to gun violence prevention to genocide.

TIYYA and Temple Emanuel are helping resettle Syrian refugee families. Our diaper drive benefited over 150 local families and we are building a mentorship program to help families restart their lives after fleeing trauma.

Founded in partnership between Temple Emanuel and a local mosque, this collaboration builds community around supporting global humanitarian projects in the critical areas of clean water, education, and healthcare.

JWW is a global leader in the fight against genocide. Together, we expanded our efforts beyond refugee camps in Africa to provide medical supplies to the remaining hospitals in Syria. Join us in our annual Walk to End Genocide.

Temple Emanuel is working with many organizations across Los Angeles, including ImagineLA, not only to help serve the homeless directly, but also to address the systemic issues that make homelessness so pervasive in our city.

We continue to be a proud member of OneLA-IAF — working with local partners to create a more just city. This year, One LA is focusing on immigration, the housing and homeless crisis, gun violence, and voter registration.

TEMPLE LIFE Emanuel's Choirs At Temple Emanuel, we believe music is central to the joy of Living Judaism. To learn more about rehearsal schedules and how you can join any of our choirs, contact Cantor Lizzie Weiss at CantorWeiss@tebh.org.

Intergenerational Choir Join our fantastic intergenerational group of singers, and participate in dynamic, cutting-edge Jewish music programming, commissions, and premiers of new Jewish choral works, prayers, and songs. We sing and perform during High Holy Day Family Services, festival services, concerts, and special events during the year.

Soul Singers Our Soul Singers are a very friendly crew of 3rd-7th grade religious school students who blend music, Judaism, community, and spirituality together in a fantastic mix of learning and performing. New singers feel welcome as soon as they join and will learn to read music, sing in varied languages, and learn songs from many genres, including Broadway tunes, traditional songs, and folk music from around the world. Our Shabbat Spark Service gets its energy from our spirited Soul Singers!

Junior Cantors With Soul Singers experience under your belt, it’s time to lead our community in prayer and song! Talented and motivated post-B’nai Mitzvah students are asked or audition to be a part of the Temple Emanuel Junior Cantors. There’s no better preparation and experience for a passionate singer than leading our congregation in High Holy Days, Shabbat, and Festival Services throughout the year.

Rooted in the principles of Reform Judaism, our mission is to build a strong, compassionate, and socially conscious community focused on making a positive imprint on one another and the world through friendship and action. Wisdom Circle

2nd Wednesday of the Month 10:45 am, Belle Chapel Food is fuel for our bodies as knowledge

is food for the brain. Join our monthly social and informal luncheon for mature adults

that begins with an invited speaker followed by a discussion with the clergy. The Wisdom Circle meets from September through June, on the second Wednesday of the month. There is a modest cost for lunch: $5.00 for members and $7.00 for nonmembers.

Friends, food, and music! Over 100 people joined together to celebrate our 2017 seder. ChaiVillageLA welcomes all Temple Emanuel adults for another incredible Passover celebration, with melodies by Cantor Lizzie Weiss and Temple Isaiah’s Cantor Tifani Coyot.
