In recent years, attempts to safeguard and promote the legacies of the various areas has resulted in Summer schools and festivals springing up all over the country – extolling the virtues of the regions and their particular style of music, paying homage to local musicians and drawing aficionados from all over the world. Odd, then, that the notion of a festival of traditional music in the heart of Dublin took longer to take root. There has always been great music in Dublin, and its contribution, particularly to the realm of piping, has been huge. In recent years, despite notions to the contrary, the very best of music has been alive in the city.

The difference has been, perhaps, that Dublin music often expresses itself best in its plurality of styles, rather than in any single discernible rhythm. At times

The programme was appropriately eclectic, drawing the best of the country’s musicians to the heart of Temple Bar in unusual combinations, running workshops, as well as exploring wider Irish cultural experiences such as story-telling, Irish language drama etc.

Join much acclaimed and well respected storytellers Niall de Búrca and Len Graham for an evening of traditional tales from home and abroad. This show is not suitable for under 16 year olds.

Peter Horan, Gerry Harrington & Ollie Ross Peter Horan is from Killavil, Co. Sligo, and is a veteran of Irish traditional music.

Growing up in ‘fiddle country’ meant that his flute style was largely free of the influence of other players, and he is now the last exponent of a unique style of flute playing.

Gerry Harrington is from Kenmare, Co. Kerry, and is now living in Lismore, Co. Waterford. His fiddle style is predominantly that of Sliabh Luachra. Gerry is a highly respected musician who has made several other recordings, including collaborations with Charlie Piggott and Nancy Conescu.

Peter and Gerry create a tight blend of wind and string in which neither dominates.

The music is played in a clean, spirited fashion without sacrificing any of their individual capacity to grace the music. You’ll enjoy listening to their music as much as they enjoy playing it. Peter and Gerry will be joined on the night by pianist, Ollie Ross.

Seán & Seán Óg Potts Seán Potts and his son Seán are both members of one of Dublin’s most famous traditional music families. John Potts, from County Wexford originally, came to the city at the turn of the last century where he became a leading exponent of the uilleann pipes. His home in the Coombe was a famous haunt for musicians from all over the country. John’s family all took to the music, in particular Tommy Potts whose famous album “The Liffey Banks” stands as one of the most influential recordings in traditional Irish music. John’s grandson Seán was a leading member of Ceoltoirí Chualann and a founder member of the Chieftains with whom he played until 1979.

Niall de Búrca Niall de Búrca was raised in Galway. At home he has featured at festivals all over the country including the Kilkenny Arts Festival, the Cúirt International Festival of Literature, the Listowel Writers Festival and the CS Lewis at Belfast City Hall.

Abroad he has performed in countries as diverse as Finland, Italy and Argentina.

Niall also spent many years living in New Zealand. His experiences as a young emigrant have had a major influence on his work and performance style.

Len Graham Len Graham was born in Co. Antrim to a family steeped in traditional music, song and dance and has been cultivating the song traditional of his native Ulster throughout his life. Len has recorded over 12 albums and been the recipient of numerous awards including the Seán O’Boyle Cultural Traditional Award and the TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year Award. He has been the main source of songs for many of Ireland’s leading traditional groups and singers including Altan, The Chieftains, De Dannan, Dolores Keane and many others.

Seán will perform with his son Seán, one of the country’s best known pipers and a former member of Bakerswell and the Donal Lunny band. Seán Óg is renowned as a solo player but also performs regularly with fiddler Ciarán Tourish and guitarist Arty McGlynn.

Edel Fox & Ronan Flaherty Edel Fox from Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, and Ronan O’Flaherty from Galway city, on concertina and fiddle respectively, released their debut recording in April 2006.

The critically acclaimed album demonstrates their virtuosity and versatility as traditional musicians and the interplay between Edel and Ronan portrays a sense of joy and devilment rarely heard on traditional recordings these days.

Dublin born Tony Kearns has been taking photographs of Irish traditional music subjects since 1991, concentrating on the Willie Clancy Summer School, held annually in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare. In 2003 he collaborated with Clare based writer Barry Taylor to produce an illustrated history of the

Summer School, entitled A Touchstone For The Tradition (Brandon).

Before Ronan Browne and Peter O’Loughlin met, Ronan had known Peter’s music from old recordings with Willie Clancy and Mrs Crotty, but had presumed that, like them, he was dead! When they were introduced to each other by Ronan’s mother Orla in 1978, a strong friendship built up very quickly. Even with an age-gap of thirty-six years both immediately understood each other’s approach to music, a rare thing indeed. To this day their friendship and musical collaboration is fêted as one of the most enduring partnerships in Irish music.

‘From Clare to Here’ features photographs of Dublin-born musicians who make the annual pilgrimage to Miltown Malbay to teach and play traditional music. The connection between Dublin musicians and this west Clare town is very strong as Willie Clancy was a master uilleann piper and piping has always been to the fore in Dublin traditional music culture.

As well as that, families steeped in traditional music such as the Crehans, the Kellys and the O’Connors have roots in west Clare which strengthens the bonds between the opposite sides of

Cathal McConnell was born in Bellanaleck in rural County Fermanagh, one of the most musical regions in Ireland. Reared in a home which was a traditional céilí house, his childhood was surrounded by music, song and storytelling. While growing up he learned a lot of traditional songs, and developed an interest in the flute and tin whistle. Tutored locally, he soon became a master flute player and his fascination with song brought him all over Ireland collecting ballads from older traditional singers.

In the early 1970s he was one of the founding members of The Boys of the Lough, with whom he sings and plays flute, and nearly forty years later the group is still going strong. For many years now Cathal has resided in Edinburgh.

Kevin Glackin Kevin Glackin comes from a family whose name is synonymous with Irish traditional music. His father Tom who came from the Rosses in west Donegal was one of a small bunch of musicians that helped keep traditional music alive in Dublin during the fifties and sixties. Kevin began playing the fiddle at the age of six under the tutelage of his father and throughout his career he has toured extensively and recorded with many artists including Davy Spillane, Mary Black and Donal Lunny.

Kevin is currently involved in different musical projects in various areas such as recording, performing, and education. He is a director of “Scoiltrad” the world’s first online interactive music school (www.scoiltrad.com) and currently lectures at the conservatory of music and drama, D.I.T on traditional music performance.

Martin Quinn & Angelina Carberry Martin Quinn comes from a family of musicians and raconteurs of traditional stories. The family has its roots in County Armagh. At an early age Martin developed a keen interest in traditional music and especially that of the accordion.

Martin took up the accordion in 1981 and since then he has developed a highly refined unique style and is regarded as one of Irelands finest exponent’s of the accordion. He has toured with various bands including Lá Lugh and Na Dorsa appearing at festivals throughout Europe and the USA. Born in Manchester in the late 70s into a County Longford family steeped in traditional music for generations, it was not long before Angelina’s interest and keen ear for the music quickly developed. Starting on the tin whistle she soon moved to the banjo following in the footsteps of her father Peter and her grandfather Kevin. Angelina has since developed a highly personal style.

In 1998 Angelina moved to Galway and quickly established herself on the local music scene. To date she has recorded 3 CDs , “Memories from the Holla” with her father Peter and the redoubtable John Blake, the self titled “Angelina Carberry and Martin Quinn” and more recently “An Traidisiún Beo” Angelina’s first solo CD.

Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh Mícheál hails from a musical family in Rathmolyon, County Meath. He has played concertina and accordion from an early age and has taught workshops and toured all over Europe and the USA. He is also a member of the All-Ireland winning Naomh Padraig and Táin Céilí Bands. He currently plays with the group Providence. His first album ‘ The Nervous Man’ was a huge success, and he has recently recorded a second one, ‘Inside Out’.

Céilí Mór with the Templehouse Céilí Band Céilís started in Ireland as neighbourhood gatherings and were originally held in kitchens or at a village crossroads. Decades later, they are still as popular as ever. Named after the Templehouse Reel, the Templehouse Céilí Band is one of the most popular Céilí bands in Ireland and the group has travelled extensively throughout the UK, Europe, North America and Russia. Comprised of six highly versatile and accomplished musicians, the Templehouse Céilí Band deliver sets that will keep you dancing all night!

John & Pip Murphy John & Pip Murphy are two of Ireland’s leading traditional musicians performing on harmonica. They both come from the south county Wexford village of Carrig-onBannow. Playing harmonica from an early age under the watchful eye of their late father Phil Murphy, they became very successful at Fleadh Cheoil competitions and both went on to win All-Ireland titles.

John & Pip have performed at festivals and folk clubs in Ireland and abroad appearing a number of times on national TV and radio. They were guests on Kevin Burke’s “Up Close” album in the early eighties and in 1989, just three weeks before Phil’s death, the Murphy trio recorded their only album “The Trip to Cullenstown” on the Claddagh label.

MICK HANLY

MICK HANLY Singer/Songwriter, Mick Hanly, has been around the block more times than most and has tried on a variety of hats in search of his own voice. Starting his career on the folk circuit in the seventies he made a couple of folk albums, A Kiss In The Morning Early, and As I Went Over Blackwater for the Mulligan label, before turning his hand to song writing.

He fronted Moving Hearts for a spell in the early eighties, singing on their Live Hearts album. He formed his own band, Rusty Old Halo, leaving one album with Warners called Still Not Cured. After a series of albums for the now defunct Round Tower label, Hanly established his own song writing style, which he has been honing to good effect since.

He had a major hit with his song ‘Past the Point of Rescue’ stateside in 1992 and picked up three BMI awards, most recently for passing the ‘Two Million Radio Plays’ in the US. He also has two Hot Press, and two National Entertainment awards. His songs have been recorded by artists Hal Ketchum, Mary Black, Delbert McClinton, Dolores Keane and Christy Moore.

In 2005 Hanly released his latest album Wish Me Well and published a book in conjunction with the album Wish Me Well/Notes On My Sleeve (Gill&Macmillan) “Wish Me Well exposes Hanly as one of Ireland’s finest songwriters. It’s riveting in its simplicity and veracity”. Gerry Quinn. Clare Champion.

Festival Club This year’s Festival Club will be held in the bar in Project Arts Centre, located on East Essex Street. When the night’s formal events are finished, the club will remain open and will provide a venue for musicians and audiences to relax, get to know each other, and maybe share a tune. So, come along to the Festival Club, meet the stage artists on a common ground and have a bit of ‘craic’ together. The Festival Club will open from 11.15 until late each night over the festival weekend.

DERVISH Dervish are one of the most prominent ambassadors of traditional Irish music and have performed to audiences around the globe. Critically lauded, they have shared centre-stage with some of the world’s most respected artists, including James Brown, The Buena Vista Social Club, Oasis, Sting, REM and Beck.

Dervish are noted also for their interpretation of a wide range of modern songs.

Possessing one of the tightest and most inventive rhythm sections on the circuit today, the Sligo-based sextet are famous for their high energy performance style, at times wild and swirling, at times deep and spiritual.

LÚNASA Since their first release in October 1997 Lúnasa has become one of the most sought-after bands on the international music scene. The bands’ inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves are steering Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory.

Lúnasa’s 9th birthday is celebrated with the release of their sixth album Sé [pronounced shay - the Irish for 6]. Sé is receiving even greater critical acclaim than the usual high praise which has greeted each album release. The Irish Times made it their CD of the week, journalist Síobhán Long writing “Lúnasa have embarked on another journey, full of hairpin bends and vertiginous peaks, fuelled by an insatiable appetite for reconnoitring routes previously uncharted...Sé is a snapshot of the band whose rigorous attention to detail repays the listener time and time again. Hidden treasures lurk in every nook and cranny within”.

JULIE FOWLIS BBC Radio 2 Horizon Winner Julie Fowlis hails from the remote island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. She made headlines in 2006 being the first Gaelic artist ever to be nominated for a coveted BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, and has recently been nominated “Folk Singer of the Year 2007” at the same prestigious awards. Julie released her critically acclaimed debut solo album, “mar a tha mo chridhe / as my heart is” in 2005, which features Eamon Doorley, Iain MacDonald, John McCusker and John Doyle amongst many others. Not only is she an award winning Gaelic singer but Julie is recognised as a fine instrumentalist as well, playing bagpipes and whistles.

Johnny B Connolly & Steve Larkin Johnny B Connolly who has generated a reputation as an accomplished button accordionist was born and raised in Dublin. For the last ten years Johnny has made his home in Portland Or. U.S.A. In 2001 Johnny recorded his Debut CD entitled “Bridgetown” which was released on the Green Linnet label. Johnny has toured extensively in the U.S., Japan and Europe and has performed and recorded with artists including the Chieftains and Kevin Burke.

Steve Larkin is a fiddle player from Boolabeg, Co. Wexford. Living in Dublin for the past number of years he has toured and recorded with a wide range of musicians including Mick Kinsella, Emer Mayock, Donal Siggins and most recently Eoin Dillon on his album “The Third Twin”. Steve has also been involved in a number of television productions including Concerto Chaitlin Maude and Billy Connolly’s tour of Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

Danny Diamond & Jonas Fromseier Danny Diamond is a young Dublin-based fiddler player who comes from a rich musical background with a strong Northern influence- his parents, Dermot and Tara are well-known for their music, as is Tara’s father, Leslie Bingham. During his teens Danny was taught the fiddle by Paul O’Saughnessy, formerly of Altan.

He has played at numerous folk/traditional Irish music festivals over the years, including the Willie Clancy Summer School, Feakle Traditional Music Festival, the Glencolmcille Fiddle week and Frankie Kennedy Winter School.

He plays regularly in sessions in Hughes’ and the Cobblestone, two of Dublin’s best-known music pubs. Danny is currently employed by the Irish Traditional Music Archive.

Jonas Fromseier has been playing the banjo since his mid-teens. Originally from the small island of Bornholm in Denmark, Jonas moved to Galway in 2005 and now makes his living as a full time musician.

Banjo workshop with Angelina Carberry – advanced level Born in Manchester in the late 70s into a County Longford family steeped in traditional music for generations, it was not long before Angelina’s interest and keen ear for the music quickly developed. Starting on the tin whistle she soon moved to the banjo following in the footsteps of her father Peter and her grandfather Kevin. Angelina has since developed a highly personal style.

In 1998 Angelina moved to Galway and quickly established herself on the local music scene. To date she has recorded 3 CDs , “Memories from the Holla” with her father Peter and the redoubtable John Blake, the self titled “Angelina Carberry and Martin Quinn” and more recently “An Traidisiún Beo” Angelina’s first solo CD. Accordion Workshop with Martin Quinn – advanced level Martin Quinn comes from a family of musicians and raconteurs of traditional stories. At an early age Martin developed a keen interest in traditional music and especially that of the accordion. He took up the accordion in 1981 and since then has developed a highly refined unique style and is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest exponent’s of the instrument.

Since beginning his professional career as a musician in the 1990s, Mart has toured with various bands including Lá Lugh and Na Dorsa appearing at festivals throughout Europe and the USA. When not playing, Martin is in keen demand as an accordion tuner and repairer.

Seán McKeon & Liam O’Connor Seán McKeon grew up listening to music at home in Dublin, with his parents Gay McKeon (uilleann pipes) and Mary Corcoran (fiddle and piano) being his earliest influences. He began playing the tin whistle at the age of 6 under the guidance of Maureen McGrattan and by the age of 15 Seán had amassed a total of 5 Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann titles and within a month of turning 18 he had won the senior Oireachtas solo competition.

In recent years Seán has performed with Noel Hill, Robbie Hannan and Seán Keane as well as forging an exciting duet with fiddle player Liam O’Connor. He has toured Europe performing and teaching music and continues to teach at Na Píobairí Uilleann as well as at various traditional music events like the Willie Clancy Summer School, South Sligo Summer School and Frankie Kennedy Winter School. Seán plays a full set of concert pitch pipes made by Cillian S O’Briain and released a recording in 2005 that features both his own music and that of his brother, Conor, and his father, Gay. Seán was awarded TG4 Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2005.

Liam O’Connor has benefited from being born into a very musical family in Baldoyle, Dublin. His father Mick, a collector and researcher from the Liberties area of Dublin, is a well known flute player, researcher and member of the Castle Céilí Band. Liam’s mother comes from Ennistymon, County Clare, an area famous for music, where Liam spent his summer holidays playing music. Liam was a pupil of the renowned fiddle player, Séamus Glackin. Séamus taught Liam from the tender age of 8 and remains a huge influence on him. With five All-Ireland Fiddle and Slow Airs Championships to his credit, Liam was voted TG4 Young Musician of the Year in 2002.

Christina Pierse Christina Pierse hails from Roscommon and is currently living in Dublin. While she works as a nurse she enjoys spending any free time she has singing.

Christina started singing at a very young age and has many All-Ireland titles to her name, won for her unique traditional style. She sings solo and as part of a singing group and has performed throughout the country and on national radio. She has an extensive repertoire of songs, a small sample of which will be heard at the festival. She hopes to entertain while giving a good insight to her singing influences.

Michelle O’Brien & Siobhán Peoples Two of the finest fiddle players in the country today Michelle O’Brien and Siobhán Peoples are from County Clare.

Both have been playing since early childhood and were heavily influenced by the playing of the legendary Tommy Peoples who taught the two of them.

Their music is a mixture of the Clare and Donegal styles of fiddle music and their energetic live performances produce a magical sound which encapsulates all that is great about traditional Irish fiddle music.

Both charming and mesmerising, a rare opportunity to catch Michelle and Siobhán live should definitely not be missed.

Caoimhe Hogarty & friends A 29-year-old singer from Dublin Caoimhe Hogarty has just finished a 2-year Higher National diploma in traditional music performance at Ballyfermot college in Dublin where she gained a large repertoire of traditional/folk songs and tunes.

Caoimhe performs regularly as a solo artist and also plays with a traditional four piece music group, singing, playing tin whistle and bodhrán. Joining Caoimhe on stage will be Brian O’Riordan (Banjo, Mandolin,) Brian Dunne (guitar), Eva Walsh (flute, tin whistle) and Mick Smith (guitar).

Fiddle Workshop with Jesse Smith - advanced level The son of Donna Long, the famous traditional Irish piano player, Jesse grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, USA,and learned his fiddle playing from Brendan Mulvihill. He moved to Ireland some years ago and spent some time as the fiddle player with the very successful band Danu.

He has recorded one solo album called ‘Jesse Smith’, and has recorded as a member of ‘The Taproom Trio’ with Harry Bradley and John Blake. He is also a member of the widely-travelled group ‘Providence’, has taught fiddle at all the major Irish summer schools and is currently doing a master’s degree in music at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Flute Workshop with Harry Bradley – advanced level Harry Bradley was born in South Belfast in the early 1970s and the vibrant 78 recording heritage from the 1920s and 1930s has had a huge influence on his personal playing style as has the playing of more contemporary exponents such as Seamus Tansey, Dessie Wilkinson and John Carty.

To date, Harry has recorded several solo CDs, in duet with Paul O’Shaughnessy and as a member of The Tap Room Trio. He also appeared as a guest on Altan’s ‘The Blue Idol’. Harry has taught at many seasonal music schools as as part of the Limerick World Music Centre MA and BA courses.

Mikie Smyth Mikie Smyth from Dublin is one of Ireland’s finest young uilleann pipers. Holding more than twenty All Ireland titles he is an acclaimed solo performer, teacher and adjudicator at most of Irish Music’s major festivals and summer schools. He regularly teaches and performs at The Willie Clancy, Joe Mooney, South Sligo, and the Scoil Eigse summer schools. Having won so many titles himself he is now a recognised adjudicator at All Ireland Competitions.

As a recording artist Mikie has worked with Donal Luney, Maurice Lennon, Michael Rooney to name just a few. His own solo album ‘The Wild Keys’ reached number four in the Irish Music Magazine charts in Dublin. Mikie has toured throughout Ireland, the UK, North America, Canada, Europe, South Africa, Japan and New Zealand, both as a soloist and teacher and with groups such as Riverdance the Show and Ragus.

Conor McEvoy Conor McEvoy from Navan, County Meath was steeped in traditional music from an early age as both parents are heavily involved in the music scene. Conor took up the fiddle at a very young age and entered various group and solo competitions winning numerous All-Ireland and Oireachtas titles.

Currently studying at UCD Belfield he also plays at various concerts and teaches at festivals throughout the summer months. With roots in Roscommon he plays music heavily influenced by the greats of the 1920’s and 1930’s like the great Michael Coleman, James Morrisson and James ‘Lad’ O’Beirne.
