Welcome to TradFest Temple Bar 2016. Eleven years on from our very first festival, our programme has expanded again this year with an exciting mix of legendary performers in historic venues and some up and coming young talent just starting out on their musical careers. We ‘ve programmed two extraordinary Gala nights in Dublin Castle too and as it is a historic year in Dublin, we will also feature newly commissioned works to mark the centenary of 1916. This year we’re delighted to be expanding into new areas of Dublin city adding The Hugh Lane Gallery and The Irish Writers Centre to our programme.

Our ever-popular concert series, Front Row Sessions continues this year. These free events will feature

household names in intimate pub venues throughout Temple Bar. By popular demand we welcome back The Dublin Legends, The Fureys, Stockton’s Wing, Declan Sinnott and Picturehouse for what is a unique opportunity for fans to get up close with their favourite artists.

We’ve put together a wonderful collection of exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, music conference and album launch to keep you occupied during the five days of TradFest.

There’s a whole programme of free events for families too, which includes music, dance, pipe bands, animal farm, children’s club and so much more.

TradFest Templebar 2016 is just about the best way to say goodbye to the winter and hello to the year ahead.

ABOUT TRADFEST Our festival started out in 2006 as a small niche traditional music festival,

Trinity College’s traditional music society has been going from strength to strength over the last number of years. In 2013, the society formed its first ever céilí band and mananaged to place first in the Dublin fleadh just a year later in 2014. The Trinity College Céilí band’s growing success has helped them to become a well-known force on the Irish céilí band scene in recent times.

In 2015, Tradsoc had the honour of recording the St.Patricks day special of ‘Céilí House’ with Kieran Hanrahan which helped put the society on the map, both in Ireland and abroad, as a dominant force in the Irish music and culture scene. SARI is a not for profit organisation. Its aim is to present sporting and cultural events that brings people together from different cultural backgrounds. It creates opportunities for young people to participate in social integration projects at home and abroad. SARI also promotes intercultural dialogue and celebrates cultural diversity through projects in schools and to encourage government agencies and national sports bodies to adopt anti-racism measures and inclusion of policies and practices.

Aoife O’Donovan’s sophomore album, ‘In the Magic Hour’, produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Neko Case), to be released in January 2016 is a collection full of the singer’s signature honeyed vocals mixed with gauzy, frictionless sounds: splashing cymbals, airy harmonies, the leisurely baritone musings of an electric guitar. Written in the wake of O’Donovan’s grandfather’s death, ‘In the Magic Hour’ is her most introspective effort yet, an aching exploration of memory and mortality.

MICHELLE MULCAHY Dublin City Hall Thursday Jan 28th Michelle Mulcahy is one of Ireland’s most talented multi-instrumentalists in Irish traditional music today. Her array of instrumental mastery spans concertina, harp, fiddle, accordion, piano and melodeon.

She is considered to be one of Ireland’s most adroit and creative harpers. She is a regular performer and tutor worldwide and has toured extensively in Europe, United States, Canada, China, Australia and Vietnam.

Expect sparks to fly when West Kerry accordionist and singer Séamus Begley joins forces with Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada. This duet of button accordion and fiddle might be a new collaboration, but both Séamus and Oisín have a distinguished past within Irish traditional music.

Begley is the quintessential Irish musician, an eager storyteller known for his sharp wit and famous for pumping out tune after tune at all night sessions with an energy that is sometimes alarming. TG4 has recently awarded Séamus the prestigious Traditional Singer of the Year award in recognition of his major contribution to Irish singing.

Fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, founder of noted group Téada, has been described by The Irish Echo’s Earle Hitchner as ‘one of the most gifted and creative traditional fiddlers playing today’. He has appeared as guest soloist with the Southern Georgia Symphony Orchestra in the US and accompanied Irish President Mary McAleese on a State visit to Romania.

Noriana Kennedy, Nicola Joyce and Noelie Mc Donnell came to know each other’s singing over a number of years, playing in sessions in the folk melting pot of Galway city.

Liam Ó Maonlaí and his all-star band went on their first national tour in May 2015, performing seventeen consecutive nights in church venues throughout the country.

Ré (pronounced ‘ray’ and meaning ‘moon’ or ‘era’ in Irish) features some of Ireland’s most innovative and decorated musicians. Maitiú Ó Casaide, a Dublin based piper, received TG4’s Young Musician of the Year Award 2015. Cormac Begley’s concertina playing has been described by The Irish Times as ‘a master class in timeless musicianship’ and in 2014 he received the Sean Ó Riada Award.

Over the past three years the band have performed at some of the main international arts festivals including the Sydney Arts Festival, New Zealand Arts Festival, Singapore Arts Festival and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. They have also toured extensively throughout Europe and have performed at the Lincoln Centre in New York.

One of the leading lights on the UK and international folk scenes, Karen Tweed is the mercurial, esoteric and elegant ‘English accordion queen’, known for groundbreaking collaborations (Kathryn Tickell, The Poozies, Swåp, Two Duos Quartet, May Monday) and inspirational teaching. Her stunning solo album ‘Essentially Invisible to the Eye’ is out now, it’s a beautiful suite, taking us on an autobiographical musical journey, illustrating how much the accordion has become Karen’s voice and pen and muse.

Teddy Thompson is an acclaimed singer-songwriter with a career that has consistently garnered critical praise. NPR proclaims that he’s “the musical equivalent of an arrow to the heart,” while The New York Times calls his work “beautifully finessed.”

The only son of British folk-rock legends Richard and Linda Thompson, Teddy formed his first band in his teens and was soon signed to Virgin Records.

By the time Thompson released his self-titled solo debut in 2000, he’d already played in his father’s touring band and contributed guitar and backing vocals to his father’s albums. Every subsequent release has met with universal admiration and in 2014 he 20

Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge from the world of Irish traditional music. Multi-instrumentalist DOUG WIESELMAN has worked as composer, arranger and musician with a variety of artists from the worlds of theatre to television. He will bring a unique flavour to proceedings on the night.

LIZ KNOWLES will add her distinctive sound of Irish fiddle combined with classical violin to the mix.

Renowned concertina player MARY McNAMARA, an East Clare native and veteren of the local trad scene, will round out this auspicious gathering of Martin’s friends.

Originally hailing from Co. Kildare, Heidi Talbot spent several years in New York City as a member of the Irish-American supergroup Cherish The Ladies. Something of a chameleon, she slips effortlessly between musical worlds but retains a personal modesty rooted in traditional folk.

Talbot began writing songs on her 2010 album ‘The Last Star’. In just two years she’s become a master of the art, sometimes composing alone, sometimes with her touring band. Her latest release ‘Angels Without Wings’ is an album of original compositions brimming with special guests from the worlds of folk, pop, rock and bluegrass.

folk will always be an inspiration, there are traces of Americana in Roses (feat. Mark Knopfler), a delicate country-tinged duet with bluegrass legend Tim O’Brien, and Parisian romance in the unforgettable title track by Boo Hewerdine, laced with vintage accordion.

Subtlety is Talbot’s magic ingredient – from her gossamer voice to the delicate re-working of traditional and contemporary material that earned her rave reviews for 2008 breakthrough ‘In Love And Light’. According to The New York Times, hers is “A voice that’s both awestruck and tender”.

Where do you begin with Oysterband? In their own words they ‘make a kind of modern, folk-based British music, acoustic at heart but not always quiet’. This is a collection of musicians who wear their politics on their sleeves, leaning toward ‘the left, the green and the sceptical’. As they approach their 30th anniversary the band can look back on a career spanning 11 studio releases, shows in more than 35 countries, as well as appearances at political rallies and even in jails!

Over seven years The Lost Brothers have proven themselves to be one of the finest and hardest working bands around. Kevin Glackin comes from a famly whose name is synonymous with Irish traditional music. His father Tom who hailed from the Rosses of West Donegal was instrumental in helping to keep traditional music alive in Dublin during the fifties and sixties.

Kevin began playing the fiddle at the age of six and being exposed at such a young age to this great musical tradition left an indelible mark. By his late teens Kevin was in big demand as a performer and teacher.

He toured extensively in North America with Seán Potts (ex Chieftains) and Bakerswell.

In 1988 he released a fiddle duet album with his brother Seamus called ‘Northern Lights’ which at the time was hailed as one of the /TempleBarTradFest

The Potts family has been involved in uilleann piping and traditional music for generations and Seán Potts has continued that strong tradition since his teenage years in the 1980s when he first started to perform and record. A strong devotee of the great piping masters of the 20th century such as Tommy Reck and Seamus Ennis, Seán has been an active teacher and solo performer for over 30 years and continues to pass on his family’s rich heritage through his involvement with Na Píobairí Uilleann and Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy. Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann takes place in August of every year, under the auspices of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the national body for the promotion of traditional music, song and dance. It is the largest cultural gathering or music festival in Ireland, with over 200,000 visitors annually. In August 2016, Ennis, Co Clare will host the festival for the first time since 1977.

THE STUNNING The Button Factory Saturday Jan 30th It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 28 years since Galway gave birth to The Stunning.

During the early nineties the biggest Irish band in the world was U2, but in Ireland it was The Stunning. In the seven years that The Stunning were initially together, they toured relentlessly, building up a following that would make them one of the most successful Irish bands ever. In 1990 their debut album ‘Paradise In The Picturehouse’ spent five weeks at number one and became one of the best-loved Irish albums of all time.

A REQUIEM FOR 1916 Dublin City Hall Sunday Jan 31st Doors 10:30am Show 11am FREE An inaugural performance of a new Requiem for 1916 in Irish, composed by Odhrán Ó Casaide, performed by the DIT Conservatory Symphonia and Chamber Choir. This powerful piece is inspired by the original pioneering work of Seán O Riada. The Requiem sets out to explore the beauty of sean nós voice, together with chamber choir and orchestra, classical solo voices, as well as traditional and early musical instruments. The blend of Irish and classical styles reflects the two great musical traditions in Ireland at the time of the Easter Rising in 1916.

World renowned Irish guitarist, producer, songwriter and folk legend Declan Sinnott will be performing an intimate Front Row Session as part of TradFest 2016 accompanied by the beautiful voice of Vickie Keating. Despite making music for nearly fifty years he released his first solo record at the grand old age of 62. All songs were recorded at Declan’s home studio where he also played all of the instruments.

Hailing from the cities of Armagh and Derry, CONNLA formed while studying Music at the University of Ulster. Their sensitive and innovative arrangements of traditional and modern folk songs and tunes have earned them praise across the world folk community. Dubbed ‘a creative storm’ by Irish Music Magazine, they plan to follow their debut EP with a full-length release in early 2016.

This year we’ve got a very special collaboration between The Limerick City Pipe Band & The Tulla Pipe Band. The City of Limerick Pipe Band was formed way back in 1949 while The Tulla Pipe Band, hailing from County Clare, was founded back in 1936. The film documents the honeymoon journey of Ernest Tiernan and his young wife Kathleen (née Durkin) as they travel from Scotland to a small farm in Cornamuckla, Co Leitrim, home of her Irish relations.

Fifty years later musicians Carayannis and Lanchashire encountered Ernests’s films in the IFI Irish Film Archive. They travelled to Scotland to meet Ernest and Kathleen and to record their recollections of the journey.

These animals play a very special role at ChildVision for the blind and multi-disabled children who attend school there to feel their cuddly, furry, friendly shapes.The little horses spend their days helping the children who are unable to move very well on their own to sit up and feel ten feet tall as they explore the sensory trail.

There’ll be ceol agus craic aplenty at TradFest Temple Bar this January, and The National Wax Museum Plus will be celebrating in style with a fun-packed children’s céilí! The céilí is a proud Irish tradition that is synonymous with dancing, traditional Irish music and generally having loads of fun. A céilí dance traditionally was a chance for everyone to get together for some socialising with some music and dancing, with the origin of the word céilí meaning ‘companion’. It’s time for the kids to click their heels with a few jigs and reels!

ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL Patrick’s St, Dublin 2 Built in honour of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral stands adjacent to the famous well where legend has it Saint Patrick baptised converts on his visit to Dublin.

The present building dates from 1220. The Cathedral is today the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and also serves as a popular tourist attraction in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has been at the heart of Dublin and Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years.

HUGH LANE GALLERY Charlemont House, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1 Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane is a public gallery of modern and contemporary art and a cultural treasure trove at the heart of Dublin’s north inner city. The gallery’s original collection was bequeathed by Sir Hugh Lane in 1908 and, as per the ethos of its founder the gallery continues to collect curate and exhibit modern and contemporary art. This internationally acclaimed collection now comprises some 2,300 pieces, including the Francis Bacon Studio and The Eve of St Agnes by Harry Clarke. Since 1095 St. Michan’s has stood witness to a millennium of the City’s history and houses the world-famous crypts containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families. Originally home to the Royal Exchange, Dublin’s City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779 to the designs of architect Thomas Cooley. This neoclassical building contains a central entrance hall or Rotunda, with a large dome supported by twelve columns. A breathtaking example of the Georgian architecture for which Dublin is renowned.

For over 800 years Dublin Castle has been at the heart of Irish history. In fact, the city gets its name from the ‘Dubh Linn’ or Black Pool, on the site of the present Castle Gardens and Coach House. The Printworks is the largest and newest venue in Dublin Castle, opened for Ireland’s hosting of the European Presidency in 2013. It is located in the lower courtyard on the ground floor of the Stamping Building. An incredible place to experience live music.

In the company of some of the other TradFest venues The Button Factory is very much the new kid on the block. While it may not have witnessed a thousand years of Dublin’s history, it has surely played host to a thousand unforgettable live-music shows since it opened its doors. Located in the refurbished Temple Bar Music Centre on Curved St, this custom-designed music venue boasts state of the art sound and lighting systems. Right at the beating heart of the Cultural Quarter...

Currently home to the Bank of Ireland, this imposing structure was built in 1729 to house the Irish Parliament, which it did until the passing in 1801 of the Act of Union. It still retains many stunning architectural features dating from its heyday. Highlights include the windowless front portico, built to avoid distractions from the outside when Parliament was in session, 18th-century tapestries, golden mace, and a sparkling crystal chandelier. There is arguably no other venue in the city with a greater sense of occasion.
