Rumours of the impending arrival of 'traffic wardens' have been circulating in Tenbury for years, as plans to 'decriminalise' parking have rumbled on. However, Malvern Hills District Council recently told us that a date has now been set and Enforcement Officers should start work in November. Tenbury currently has Street Scene Wardens, who can enforce parking regulations in the 'Pay and Display' car park, including issuing 'excess charge notices' ("parking tickets") when required. They can can also deal with a range of other issues, including cycling on the pavement, graffiti, littering and dog fouling. Civil Enforcement Officers (the Local Authority

Only experience will show which side is right, but hopefully there will initially be a 'softly softly' approach, to give motorists time to change their habits.

Market Solution? Recent years have seen a number of high-sided vehicles crash into Tenbury's iconic Round Market, causing significant damage. The 'public realm' works that are being planned for Tenbury could provide an opportunity to protect this historic building. The problem arises when drivers of tall vehicles don't appreciate the width of the market's oversailing roof, so although they watch and avoid the walls, they can still hit the roof. A reader has provided us with this illustration, showing what the Round Market could look like with a paved area round it. If this paved area was wide enough, it should safeguard the building from harm in the future, by keeping high-sided vehicles at a safe distance. At present there is no pavement outside the entrance that faces towards Age Concern and Marilyns, so on leaving the market, people immediately find themselves in the road, which can be hazardous. A paved area could therefore increase safety for shoppers. This entrance currently has steps and it might be possible to incorporate a ramped section into the new paved area, making the building more accessible to those for whom steps are a problem.

Tesco Presentation
Tesco's plans for a new Superstore in Bromyard will be displayed at a public exhibition in the Conquest Theatre foyer on Friday August 2nd, from 11am to 7pm. Simon Petar, from Tesco, said "We know there is a great deal of interest in our plans at Bromyard, so we are encouraging residents to join us in the Conquest Theatre where they can view the plans, ask questions of our project team and let us have their feedback." Mr Petar added that the hope is to submit a full planning application to Herefordshire Council this autumn.

Roadworks Hit Trade On the Move! The recent roadworks on the A456 in Burford caused a serious loss of trade in Tenbury Wells. This was due to factors such as the loss of parking on Teme Street (many spaces were coned off, to maintain traffic flow); the delays caused by the traffic lights (so some motorists didn't make the trip into Tenbury for a few odds and ends); and the announcements on local radio that it was best to avoid the area. The congestion caused by the lights controlling the junction by Swan Garage proved that traffic lights would not be a realistic approach if increased traffic management was ever needed and the problems also demonstrated what might happen if this junction became much busier, given that two wide vehicles cannot pass on the bridge, without using the pavement.
Hop Festival

Bromyard’s 3rd annual Hop Festival, a free day-long event, is on Saturday 31st August. Organisers are pressing for local people to enter the unique World Championship Hop Pocket Race. This starts at 4pm and last year an estimated 3,000 people lined the streets to watch. This year’s Festival includes a free film show and displays of memorabilia at the Conquest Theatre, restored Victorian amusements and rural crafts on the Town Green, and a craft fair in the Public Hall and Heritage Centre. There will also be rock bands and children’s attractions in the Market Square, a ‘hop-picking experience’, and an Opening Parade of vintage and horse-drawn vehicles.
There's a lot going on in Tenbury's Teme Street these days, in terms of businesses moving in, or out, or along. The former television shop, after being vacant for something like 20 years, is the new home of the Cottage Dental Practice. The former Tiger's Bar is now Teme Valley 4x4. Local accountants Dyke, Ruscoe and Hayes are moving a few yards along the street, into the former wedding shop, and the Tourist Information Centre is planning to move into the corner property of Teme Court, replacing the Little Gourmet!

Tenbury Teme Valley Band and Little Hereford Voices Community Choir’s ‘Music for a Summer Evening’ concert at the Regal was a sell-out. It raised £1,000 for two local charites, Mandy Davies Cancer Support and Shoot for the Stars. The music ranged from ‘Old Time Singalong’ to ’Rolling in the Deep’ by Adele and Mansel Leake, Honorary President of the Band said: “It was a magical evening and we are delighted to have raised £1,000 for two such worthwhile local charities”. Numerous groups were involved, including Burford House Garden Store (floral displays), Tenbury Round Table, the Regal team, local businesses (raffle prizes) and Special Occasions (balloon displays). The highlight of the evening was the Grand Last Night of the Proms-type Finale, with much hilarity and audience participation!

Moffats Update Recent activities at Moffats preparatory school near Cleobury Mortimer included a Languages Day and the annual end-ofyear riding competitions. A number of additional overseas pupils make Moffats their temporary home during the Summer Term. This year children from Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia and France settled in, adding to the Mongolian and Norwegian nationalities currently at the school. Morning lessons were given by pupils in their own languages of Spanish, Italian, Mongolian and Russian, with Sinhala being taught by Head,

refreshments tempted fete-goers, as did the Candy Floss and the BBQ, run by Phil Gibbs of Clockhouse. Photo entries for the village hall loo makeover were on show, even including one of a large tarantula by a plug hole! The skittles, coconut shy, plant stall, tombola, bric-a-brac, 'Classic dresses' stall and more all helped make it an enjoyable afternoon.
Robin McCarthy, who explained "Encouraging all languages is something that really comes to the fore during this term. Pupils were given the opportunity to come to school dressed with an international or languages theme. A pizza, windmill and Chinese dragon were amongst the vast array of characters we saw around the school. Perhaps the association of languages with dressing up will subconsciously make French lessons even more enjoyable!" A parade took place after lunch followed by flamenco dancing for all, taught by a girl from Seville, Italian games and Ricket (a cross between rounders and cricket). Funds raised during the day will be sent to The Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft charity, as decided by the school’s prefects. At the riding competitions there were dressage and jumping classes, with fun gymkhana races throughout the afternoon. Judge Sarah Whiteway said, "It was a pleasure to see such beautifully turned out ponies with children taking much pride in their riding and handling of them - from the very beginners to the most experienced." Moffats School is a Pony Club Centre and children have spent the year achieving tests and badges with the school's and their own ponies. The next Open Day is on Tuesday 8th October from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
The Beer and Cider Festival at The Boot in Orleton on the last weekend of July saw beer, cider and perry enthusiasts gather to sample a selection from the 40 or so that were on offer. In addition to the drinks, a goodly choice of food was available at affordable prices. Plenty of cover was provided, which proved to be the right decision, given the mixed weather. Other attractions included live music; no doubt many people will already be looking forward to next year's event!

HOME & GARDEN Bodnant Garden
Bodnant lies about seven miles south of Llandudno and it's easy to find as it's just off the main A470. If you're using public transport, there are direct trains from Ludlow to Llandudno Junction, about five miles from Bodnant. The National Trust describe it thus: "Created by five generations of one family, this 32-hectare (80-acre) garden is superbly located, with spectacular views across Snowdonia. With expansive lawns and intimate corners, grand ponds and impressive terraces, a steep wooded valley and stream, as well as awe-inspiring plant collections, there are continually changing glorious displays of colour." The garden is laid out around Bodnant House; the garden, but not the House, was presented to the National Trust in 1949. Quirky features include "Pin Mill" at the end of the 'canal'. This 1730 building got its name because it was once used for making dressmaking pins. By the 1930s it was very run down; the then Lord Aberconway had it moved from Gloucestershire to his estate at Bodnant.

Wall-to-wall sunshine saw people searching for shade by the end of the afternoon at Rock on Saturday July 6th. The fete, at St Peter and St Paul's, was opened by local MP Mark Garnier. It raised funds for the church. Attractions included a classic car display, games and races for the youngsters, including sack and egg and spoon - remember them! Rock WI ran a tombola and many went away with a prize. The face painting, coconut shy and skittles kept young and old busy, while the energetic could climb up to the top of the church tower and enjoy the view on this glorious day. There was even a telescope provided so you could really have a good look out! Bliss Gate Dog training school display demonstrated obedience from the dogs - and the owners - while Zennor's school of dance display rounded off the afternoon.

On Friday 5th July committee members from the Tenbury Wells Branch of the Women’s Institute gathered to mark the re-dedication of an oak tree. Donated by Mrs Gladys Morris as a sapling from her garden, the oak was planted on The Burgage in the 1970s as part of the celebrations to commemorate the Institute's 50th Anniversary. The Mayor, Councillor George Price was in attendance as the new plaque was 'planted' alongside the tree, as were current President Primrose Wallace, a number of other members of the institute and representatives of the local press.

Neen Savage, near Cleobury Mortimer, held their fete and 'scarecrow convention' on 29th June, with Harry Potterthemed scarecrows. Attractions included teas in the village hall, 'smash the Malteser', hook a duck and tombola, but the biggest smiles were raised with the dog agility competition, where owners gamely encouraged their often bemused and reluctant dogs to complete the course. There were smiles and sympathetic laughter all round as the 'have a go' spirit triumphed!

Kites were flying high over Lacon Childe's playing fields in Cleobury Mortimer during the weekend of June 28th-30th. When we visited on Saturday there was just enough breeze to keep a range of kites aloft, though some were struggling to get off the ground. There were large ones and small ones, in a variety of shapes, colours and constructions. You could buy a kite or you could bring your own - or you could just sit, watch and enjoy the friendly relaxed atmosphere!

The flags were out for the Summer Fayre at St Mary's Church, Tenbury Wells on Saturday 22nd June. It was opened by the Mayor, George Price. Due to the weather this year it took place inside the church - even the Bouncy Castle, which was an unusual sight! Visitors could buy secondhand books, choose from a wide selection of cakes at very reasonable prices, find a bargain on the white elephant stall, pull a straw and take home a soft toy - or play “golf”! Or you could sit a while and listen to Tenbury Town Band, have a cup of tea, or even a Ploughman's lunch!

Tenbury Countryside Show - Saturday 3r The Tenbury Countryside Show is the biggest event on Tenbury's calendar and each year - weather permitting - thousands flock to the Show. There's always plenty to see - you could spend time watching what's happening in the Main Ring and the Countryside Ring, or you could take a look round the stands. The Show is run by the Tenbury Agricultural Society and you can expect to see large agricultural exhibits, such as tractors, or Les Woodhouse's mobile mill and mix vehicle. The show promotes the countryside in general, so smallholdings, small producers and country living in its widest sense are all represented. It's a feast of everything to do with the countryside! Strolling round the stands is a great way to meet people you do business with in a more social setting. Many local businesses have stands at this year's show, so do pop in and say hello. It's also a great opportunity to make new contacts, to meet friends, and perhaps even relax with a drink!

There are a great many trade stands, so whether you're looking for a car, an accountant, a vet, a school, support for your garden plants or even a tree for your garden, you might find what you need. There are farm vehicles large and small, including ATV's, and even a solicitor: Norris and Miles are running a "will and wellie" competition. The day starts early, including show jumping, horse and pony classes, and judging of the stock. The Show advert on page 13 has lots of information about what's happening, including a timetable of main events. Don't miss the Horticultural and Arts and Rural Crafts Tents, with handicrafts, art, photography, cakes, plants, flowers, fruit, vegetables - and much more. The Food Fayre includes Food Demonstrations
and many small producers; often you can try before you buy. Elsewhere on the Showground, attractions include classic tractors, tractor pulling, and the 29th National Show of Hereford Cattle. There are various activities for youngsters and on-site catering means you shouldn't go hungry even if you spend the
whole day at the Show! Towards the end of the day you can expect the National finals of the Young Farmers Clubs Tug of War, starting at around 4.45pm, followed by the Steam Engine Tug of War and then the Mile Foot Race. The Tenbury Countryside Show really is a full day out!!

On July 20th, Tenbury's Local Producers Market was held for the first time at its new home, The Burgage. The stalls offered a wide choice, from sausages, bread, cheese or a bottle of wine to a range of items from a local blacksmith. Nick Champion of Tenbury Wells told us that "A fair entry of 710.5 acres of standing straw was offered on 4th July 2013. Bidding was strong for the few lots of good winter wheat straw crops which sold to a top of £104 per acre. The large proportion of spring crops met a more selective trade with location and straw quantity the main factor. The overall average was £58.64, with Winter Wheat at £56 to £104 (average £82.15), Spring Barley £42 to £54 (average £44.64), Spring Wheat £66 to £78 (average £70.11), Winter Oat £60, Spring Oats £52, Winter & Spring Rape £25."

Perhaps the most striking items were the assorted animals, locally-made from locallygrown willow, that could be seen 'grazing' on the grass near the hall!

The Bell at Pensax, Camra Pub of the Decade, held its 14th Annual Beer Festival over the last weekend of June. The sun shone, making the most of the hillside setting and the views across open countryside. Over 75 real ales were on offer over the weekend, some local, some from further afield. Ciders and lagers were available in the garden, including Ginger and Strawberry ciders! It was a great opportunity to sample a wide variety of beers and the enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff could help you choose. The friendly atmosphere was good for families and many gathered to do some serious tasting and enjoy the barbecue.

Party in the Park Sunday 23rd June saw a massive police turnout for Tenbury's 'Party in the Park', a fun day for the family. The day started a bit drizzly and cold but the afternoon was brighter and dry. The go-karts, extreme trampolines, bouncy castles, climbing tower, sumo wrestling and merry-go-round kept the youngsters busy, with long queues for some. Sunshine Radio kept the mood buzzing, especially Disco Daddy! There were lots of stalls, police vehicles, replica weapons, and more, including Trevor Hill's Birds of Prey and Animal Encounter.

Bridge Beer Festival An excellent range of real ales ciders and perries, some new and some old friends provided a real tasting opportunity at The Bridge at Stanford Bridge's 'BridgeStock' Peace, Beer & Cider Festival over the weekend of July 20th. Live music each night and a BBQ offering a range of kebabs plus hot dogs and veggie burgers helped keep people happy. The cask ales included a delicious Three Tuns Jim Jones' Peculiar IPA 'No Doctors' but at 6.6% this had to be taken in moderation!

Rosie Beer Festival Open all day, seven days a week, this traditional drinking pub offers a range of beers plus ciders and Guinness. Located in the heart of the town's main street, it offers a rare insight into how pubs used to be.
The Rose and Crown in Burford held their 3rd Beer, Cider and Music Festival from 12th-14th July. The weather was hot and sunny when we visited on the Sunday and the live music was in full swing with many up on their feet dancing to The Ronaldos - a truly professional performance especially considering the heat! They were followed by the Morris Men who added a splash of colour and energy.

Knighton-on-Teme Caravan Park held their fete on Saturday 29th June, including a pig roast by Tenbury's Food Hall. Park owner John Powell was kept busy pulling pints on the bar in the park's orchard setting, a lovely place to enjoy the excellent weather. Tenbury Town Band provided the music and the more adventurous could try the gyroscopic ride or attempt the 'Robinsons Cider' Golf challenge which involved trying to chip balls into various buckets, pots and cones! Bat the Rat, tea, cakes, white elephant stall and tombola rounded off the other attractions on the day.

Bridgestock 2013 a Sweltering Success! The first ever summer beer festival at The Bridge at Stanford Bridge was held from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st of July and over the course of the weekend the offer of 20 cask ales and 20 traditional ciders and perries attracted festival goers en masse to the pub to enjoy a pint whilst listening to some great music. The weekend kicked of on the Friday night with local lads Two Pricks with Acoustics playing to a packed marquee in the back garden where the 7.2% Black Dragon cider proved a popular 'ease in' to the festivities. On Saturday night The Chicago Bytes Blues band followed up an earlier gig in the day at Upton Blues Festival with a storming set which got the crowd dancing whilst putting away a fair few pints of the sublime 4.7% American Pale Ale from the Darkstar Brewery in Brighton. A slightly hungover crowd had
the pleasure of watching England beat (thrash?) the Aussies in the Ashes on the big screen in the garden before the hugely talented Dan Greenaway finished off the weekend in style with his set of requests - pretty much you name it and he would play it! With the inaugural Bridgestock proving a hit it is now assured a permanent place in the pub's busy event schedule. "We already hold a beer festival over the Easter weekend and another German themed event in October, but it was great to hold a summer beer festival and enjoy some decent weather for a change - we will definitely be back next year with some more top music and with a bit of luck some local camping too so folks can really get stuck in without the worry of getting home after a few too many" said landlord Tim Lawson
Four Hour Endurance Bridge Quiz Night Lawnmower Race Coming Up Last Wednesday in Every Month The West Midlands Lawnmower Racing Association will be holding a four hour lawnmower race on Sunday the fourth of August at Orleton Court Farm (on the old BridgeBash site) with kind permission of Tom and Amber Spilsbury. The race starts at 1pm and runs until 5pm for the mowers that make it, and as the only endurance event in the WMLRA calendar it promises to be an interesting test of the drivers as well as their souped
up machines. There will be a bar and barbecue trackside on the day, and all are welcome (free entry) to come and watch the action and get a taste of what mowersport is all about.

Bridge Trolls in Contention for the Title? It is the last game of the Hobsons Pub Cricket League on Tuesday, 6th of August and the Bridge Trolls (currently second in the league) are playing Cleobury Sports and Social Club (currently top) at home at Sapey Cricket Club. A win for the Trolls would leave them joint top on points with Cleobury at the end of the season not bad going for a team that lost all their games last year!

WINE BOXES Recent spells of fine weather saw people sprucing up the barbecue for another season, and this is the time of year when many think about buying wine boxes. Over the years some pretty dire wines have been found in boxes, and although a box is a convenient way to package wine, that's no reason to fill it with dodgy wine! We therefore set out to find some respectable yet affordable wines, which you and your guests can expect to enjoy. Normally we taste wines at the correct temperature, but if you leave a box of white out for hours on a hot day, it's going to warm up. You can help it keep its cool by keeping it in a shady place, possibly with a freezer block (but don't let the box get soggy). Consequently we also tried the whites at around 20 degrees, to make sure they were still enjoyable. All the wines were well-made and pleasantly cleantasting. The Morrisons and Tesco wines were easy-drinking all-rounders; the Co-op's had a bit more
personality. This might make Co-op's more popular with enthusiasts, but possibly more challenging for the less committed. Getting a wine box ready for use is still a bit of a fiddle, but these boxes all had decent taps, with no particular tendency to drip, or to gush wine out in a torrent, as we have sometimes encountered in the past! A 3-litre box holds the equivalent of four standard bottles, a 2.25-litre box holds three, so the equivalent bottle cost is between £3.75 and £4.67.
MORRISONS Good French White £14.99 (3 litres) Made from an unstated blend of grapes, this was a nicely-balanced and very pleasant white wine that would be widely acceptable. Dryish without being dry and with notes of white peach and a hint of lime, this would go down well on a summer's evening - or at many other times. Good French Red £15.99 (3 litres) Also made from an unstated blend of grapes, this was also nicelybalanced. Lower in tannin than many French reds, this has more of an international style, rather than being typically French. With sufficient fruitiness and a pepperiness, this is a wine that's easy to drink with or without food.

TESCO Simply Chardonnay £16.49 (3 litres) From South East Australia, this isn't as bold as you might expect an Australian Chardonnay to be, possibly because it's a blend, described as also including Cereza, Auxerrois Blanc and Albariño grapes. Tesco describe it as 'Elegant, appley Chardonnay' - a fair enough summary - and we found none of the sharp edge sometimes found in an inexpensive Chardonnay. When cold it had more freshness, but the flavour still came through. Simply Shiraz £16.49 (3 litres) Also from South East Australia, this lacks the boldness you often get with Australian Shiraz, which could make it more widely-acceptable, rather than being something just for the keen red wine drinker. There's not a lot of fruit up front, but it builds to a strong presence, ending with a long peppery style. Some people might consider this to be at its best with food, but we enjoyed it with or without.

CO-OP Jacaranda Hill Semillon Chardonnay 2012 £17.99 (3 litres) Another wine from South East Australia, this is perhaps a more 'serious' wine than the other whites, being fresher, sharper and drier, with green apple notes and hints of tropical fruits. This style might be preferred by keen white wine drinkers, but could be too assertive for some. As a BBQ choice it would go particularly well with spicy food. Jacaranda Hill Shiraz 2012 £18.49 (3 litres) Quite firm, this is a robust red, with some tannin, but without the pepperiness one might expect from an Australian Shiraz. However, if you enjoy a dry red with lots of substance and flavour, it might be just what you're looking for, especially with the right sort of food. A real horses-for-courses wine! The Pink Chill 2011 £13.99 (2.25 litres) There's always something fun about pink wine but this Californian Zinfandel is less sweet than might be expected so it's more than just a party wine. As its name suggests, this does need to be served chilled. There's a pleasant almost floral aroma and hints of redcurrants and strawberries. Well-chilled, this could please many rosé drinkers on a hot evening!

SPAR Tenbury Wells and Ludlow have a number of wine offers from August 1st to 21st. These include Blossom Hill sparkling Zinfandel at £6.50 and Kiwi Cuvee Sauvignon Blanc at £5.50. Tesco prices on July 29th were £8.99 and £5.99 respectively, so these look to be good deals.
Photo by Jeff Bloxham The Lola Aston Martin DBR1-2 that competed at Le Mans in 2009, finishing 4th in its class, is due to appear at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in August. The car, driven by Jan Charouz, Stefan Mucke and Thomas Enge, was the leading Lola Aston Martin that year, as part of a two-car assault on the Le Mans 24 Hours. Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. Lionel Martin entered cars at Shelsley during the 1920s; in 1950 and 1951 Aston Martin came as a works effort, with the Le Mans DB2 team cars, with XMC 76 and XMC 77 for Reg Parnell, George Abecassis and Charles Brackenbury; and Abecassis returned in 1953 with a DB3. In 1955 and 1956, when David Brown owned the marque, Angela Brown (his daughter) entered a DB3. Prestige car dealers Stratstone are scheduled to be displaying a wide selection of current road cars overlooking the start line at Shelsley.
Illegal Tyres
A recent check at a Shropshire primary school found illegal tyres on eight of the 25 cars that were inspected. The test, conducted by tyre manufacturer Falken, also found tyres that were over 10 years old. Following the success of the event in Shropshire, Falken is planning to roll it out to other schools across the UK.

Launched at the British Motor Show in 2008, the Insignia has sold well, with production topping the halfmillion mark in 2012. Where new car purchases are concerned, it has been particularly popular as a company car. Here we're looking at the estate-style 'sports tourer', but a hatchback version is also available. The 'SRi' we drove had the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The modest capacity (1364cc) combined
with the car's size - about 16 feet long - might suggest a lack of performance, but in fact the engine offers 140bhp, giving the car a top speed potential of about 124mph. Acceleration isn't quite as vibrant, taking just over 11 seconds for the 060 sprint, but there are plenty of other engine choices, all the way up to 325bhp, if you're looking for performance rather than economy. The 1.4 turbo doesn't deliver as
much mid-range pull as a 2-litre diesel, for example, so lower gears are required more often than you might initially expect. Even on motorways there were times when we used 4th gear (out of six). This isn't a problem, it's just a question of getting used to the car's characteristics, but you might not get the feel for it on a short test drive. With the SRi spec the suspension is

fairly firm and the car we drove had 245/40-19 tyres. Consequently it could feel a bit joggly at low speeds on poor surfaces. As the speed rose things smoothed out well and when cruising at 50-60mph on a main road it did a good job of soaking up the bumps, while also delivering tremendous control. This made it easy, and surprisingly restful, to maintain cruising speed, even on quite bendy roads. The lack of roll gives passengers an easier time through the twisty bits and it also helps luggage to stay in place. A few details were a little disappointing - in particular, we'd have liked larger mirrors and we felt the windscreen wipers were rather noisy. Taken overall, the combination of space, competence and refinement made the model we drove - a Sports
Tourer 1.4 Turbo SRi - a viable option if you want a car with some driver appeal, but need a family-friendly car with significant luggage capacity. We found it easy to average 43mpg, quite impressive for a petrol-engine car of this size. The huge choice of trim levels and engine options (petrol and diesel) widens the car's appeal. List prices range from about £18,000 to about £33,000, so if you're looking for a large car in this price bracket, an Insignia is certainly worth a look. A facelifted model is due in the showrooms later this year. This has revised engine options but the 1.4 Turbo we tried is continuing. A new derivative, the 'Country Estate', is part of this new range; with its fourwheel-drive and increased ground clearance it might well appeal to country dwellers.

MPS to LLANDUDNO! The Mazda3 range mainly consists of practical 1.6-litre models, but there are also two higher performance models, the 185bhp 2.2 Sport Diesel and the petrol-engined 260bhp 2.3litre turbocharged Mazda3 MPS. We drove the MPS, the sportiest car in the range. It certainly offers plenty of get up and go, with its top speed of 155mph and the potential to hit 60mph from a standing start in under six seconds. It's competing head-on with cars such as Vauxhall's Astra VXR and Ford's ST. Inevitably all this performance comes at a price and with the MPS, the bad news is its high emissions: 219g/km. The good news is its relatively affordable on-the-road price of ÂŁ23,995. The official "combined" fuel consumption is 30.1mpg, but we returned an overall average of 33mpg without any difficulty, so it's presumably a question of how you drive. Harnessing all that power through just the front wheels can sometimes be a bit of a challenge and there are times when it demands a firm hand from the driver, particularly when accelerating hard in the lower gears, or when crossing white lines or varying road surfaces. Yet despite all this fire and brimstone, the MPS is delightfully refined and civilised during normal everyday driving, making it a practical all-round car, rather than something you can only use for hedonistic weekends. It also has five doors, rather than the three you find on some hot-hatches, and there's a reasonable

amount of space for rear-seat passengers. It'll potter along at 1,000rpm if that's what you want, with nothing (other than the massive air scoop on the bonnet) to hint at the performance that's lurking within. The suspension generally works well, being firm enough to control the car during hard cornering, yet supple enough to deliver satisfactory comfort on shopping trips, or even on a longer run such as from the Teme Valley to Llandudno! There are some nice touches, such as the easy-to-use satnav. It's not very big, but its relatively high location makes it easier to see than satnavs that are located lower down. It's operated by controls on the steering wheel, which we found more convenient than many touchscreens. Drawbacks include mirrors that are a bit small and the heavy spring-loading of the gearbox into the 3rd/4th plane, which occasionally made it easy to end up Mazda's sporty MPS, seen in front of the historic Bodysgallen Hall Hotel. in the wrong gear. There's no doubting that it's a line. Hotel, Restaurant & Spa As the old song goes, "Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside" and the seaside is one thing the Teme Valley can't offer. The Welsh coast is a popular destination and Llandudno is an interesting option for local residents who feel the call of the sea. Its elegant Victorian architecture and its sheltered position, with the hills rising behind and the Great Orme to one side and the Little Orme to the other, help make it an attractive place to visit. Rising to about 679 feet, the Great Orme is a striking limestone headland. Its name allegedly derives from the Old Norse for a sea serpent, due to a supposed resemblance in appearance! If you're lucky enough to be at the top on a clear day, you'll find a magnificent view, extending to the Isle of Man and the Lake
Bodysgallen Hall is a Grade I listed house, set in its estate of 220 acres of gardens, parkland and farmland, two miles from Llandudno with views to Conwy Castle, Snowdonia and the sea. It was originally built in 1250 as an outlying watchtower to Conwy Castle, whilst the rest of the house was built between 1620 and 1900. Its gardens defined by walled compartments include a parterre, and a woodland garden with a terrace overlooking Conwy Castle and Snowdonia.
As an hotel it offers fifteen bedrooms and sixteen cottage suites, meeting rooms, Spa and a renowned restaurant. figure of about 9.9 seconds; the 1.5 litre CR-Z offers 124mph and 9.1 seconds (Sport) or 9.5 seconds (GT). However, although the Honda delivers similar performance, its hybrid system improves efficiency, so it's significantly more economical, underlining its green credentials. The Mazda's official 'combined' fuel consumption is 39.8mpg, whereas the CR-Z's official mpg is 56.5 (Sport) or 54.3 (GT). The electrical assistance also improves the car's hill-climbing ability and reduces the need to change down. For example, on the road from Burford to Clee Hill it took the uphill hairpins in third gear without fuss, and then accelerated away willingly. Very impressive. This is a small car so although there are four seats, it's a 'two plus two' not a full four-seater because there isn't enough

For years Honda had a reputation for sporty cars, with models such as the NSX, S2000 and Prelude, but as time went on these sportier models disappeared from their range. However, Honda still offer one sporty little number the CR-Z. It's an unusual car, in that it's a hybrid, with an integrated electric motor working in partnership with the petrol engine. Traditionally sports cars have not been so much about absolute performance as they have about look and feel. The CR-Z certainly offers the low-slung feel of a sports car and the test car's metallic green paintwork - officially 'Energetic Yellow' - also helped it stand out from the crowd. The world's best-selling sports car is said to be Mazda's MX-5. In 1.8 litre form this has a top speed of 121mph and a 0-62mph
room in the back for typical adults. However, the boot is a reasonable size, which often isn't the case in small cars. There are a few cosmetic changes for this year's CR-Z, including a revised front grille and a new rear diffuser. Power output has risen slightly: the engine is up from 114 to 121 bhp and electric motor power is up from 10kW to 15kW. There is now an "S+" button on the steering wheel; this can provide a small performance increase, provided the hybrid battery is sufficiently well charged. Like the previous model, there are three modes of operation and the driver can select Sport, Normal or Eco. These mainly affect the feel of the car - for example, Sport gives faster throttle response, but Eco can deliver a small improvement in economy under certain conditions, by limiting how hard the air conditioning can work, and by allowing the car's speed to vary slightly from the selected value, if cruise is set. The CR-Z is an unusual car, but it's one that allows people to buy a sporty-looking car that offers low running costs. The 'GT' costs £23,275 on the road. It offers perforated leather upholstery, HID xenon headlights, automatic lights and wipers, and a panoramic glass roof. The Sport is significantly less expensive, at £20,750, but it's still well equipped, with cruise, privacy glass, and rear parking sensors). Looking at running costs, the GT we drove averaged 48mpg during relaxed driving. For road tax purposes the Sport is band C but the GT, with its sportier-looking 205/45 R17 tyres (the Sport has 195/55 R16s) has slightly higher emissions, so falls into band D.
