More Road Works for Tenbury?

What about our Post Offices?

Queuing to use the Mobile Branch Local Post Offices haven’t been doing very well recently. The counter in the shop at Clee Hill has closed, its replacement being a Mobile Branch that parks twice a week on the village hall car park.

The branch at the back of the village hall in Brimfield closed after a robbery in April and it looks unlikely to reopen in the immediate future.

The Tenbury branch was in Bowketts supermarket but it closed in early May, when Bowketts shut. Disappointingly, given the number of local residents and the substantial business community, months passed before a ‘Mobile Branch’ finally made an appearance in Tenbury, its first visit being at the start of August. Even this seems little more than a token gesture, being only once a week and for just 90 minutes: it parks near the swimming pool from 2pm to 3.30pm on Tuesdays.

Ken Pollock, Tenbury’s County Councillor, has stated that the new Post Office counter “will open in November” but Post Office Ltd haven’t given us a date.

Local MP Harriett Baldwin worked with local post office management to secure the temporary ‘van based’ mobile service for Tenbury, but she has now urged them to speed up the work to allow the new franchise to start trading.

Harriett commented “The staff at the SPAR are ready and willing to get going and I hope that

Drainage is one issue that has been raised County Councillor Ken Pollock addressed the matter of Tenbury’s unfinished public realm work in his report to Tenbury Town Council in September. Ken commented “I regret to say that we still have not completed the Public Realm work in Teme Street. The raised table outside Tesco’s should have been re-laid with the sort of red tarmac used elsewhere. This and the provision of the right seat in the right position are part of the work to be paid for by Tesco’s. So far they have been slow in fulfilling their obligations under the S278 agreement and we continue to pursue them on this. In addition we are keen to ensure the black Tarmac patches on the footways will be replaced by proper York stone pavers in the near future.”

There have been suggestions that the 20 limit in Teme Street should be extended, perhaps across the bridge or up to the primary school. Ken commented “....there is pressure for extending the 20mph limit along Cross Street and beyond the primary school on the Bromyard Road. While I was a prime mover behind the lower limit in the Public Realm area, I am not in favour of further extensions.”

Accountants sponsor Blues Club Shropshire Blues Club started as the South Shropshire Blues Club in 2013, but since a relaunch in February 2019 they have adopted the more ‘global’ name of Shropshire Blues Club.

The Club was formed with the aim of providing regular, high-quality live Blues and Blues-Rock entertainment in Shropshire and also of raising money for local cancer charities. In their five years of existence they have raised several thousand pounds while presenting all manner of top-class bands and artists with the help of the Ludlow Brewing Company, who hosts the gigs in their brewery.

Gigs take place on a bimonthly basis and John Verity Band, Chris Jagger, Sultana Brothers and Paul Bridgwater Electric Blues Rebellion have all played recently - all supported by the club’s House Band, Blue Moon.

When Ludlow Cancer Support Group was asked for suggestions about what to do at their next meeting, member Janet Thomas asked if a coffee morning could be held in aid of Breast Cancer Care. The spontaneous request resulted in cake, coffee and sandwiches (organised by Lorna Osborne), a quiz (organised by Janet) and a raffle at their next meeting. Members entered into the spirit of the event and £176 was raised.

“Raising £176 in such a short time to support a fellow-member

demonstrates the determination and camaraderie within the Ludlow Cancer Support Group”, said chairman Rosemary Wood.

“Our aim is to offer fun and friendship though our regular twice-monthly meetings and also at events like our annual Garden Party, held in Wigley’s Field Organic Allotments at Dinham near our own plot and garden called Joan’s Garden, in memory of one of our founder members."

The new Adventure Golf course has opened at Grove Golf and Bowl near Leominster. Gill Ding, Head of Leominster Tourism, did the honours and cut the ribbon on the new Adventure Golf course on Wednesday 21st August, aided by Derek Price MBE (President of Grove Golf Club) and Knighton's Town Crier.

The course has been built to test putting skills with slopes and obstacles to challenge even the most accomplished player. The design layout is wheelchair friendly and enables all ages and abilities to join in the fun, with all equipment provided. To complement the course a beer garden has been built with a central oak framed barn and al fresco seating.

It's hoped that this course will get people golfing and inspire starters to progress via the other training facilities at the Grove. PGA Pro Gary Morgan was on hand to give a free putting clinic on the new course and he also takes Junior Lessons every Saturday morning from 10.3011.30am and Ladies Group Lessons from 11am to 12noon on Mondays. Queen's Award Presentation

Anton Schooley and Shelia Benbow received The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award on behalf of volunteers at The Regal, Tenbury Wells.

The presentation of a domed glass crystal and a certificate signed by the Queen was made by the Queen's representative, The LordLieutenant of Worcestershire Lt Col Patrick Holcroft.

Rock Show

Morning showers gave way to an afternoon of breezy but fine weather, ready for the opening of Rock Show at 2pm. In a lovely setting with views across to the Abberley Hills, the large village hall and its grounds gave plenty of space for the various activities and parking. Those visiting for the first time for a while could see the new playground and many families made good use of it!

The traditional stalls were there and a BBQ, children’s races, tug of war, fun dog show and a horticultural show in the hall all made for a great afternoon. Jenny Bore won first prize with her arrangement of flowers in a basket (see pic) and

a plate of nine perfect-looking plums gave Ray Nightingale a well-deserved first (see pic).

Cleobury Mortimer Concert Brass band did a most excellent job with their performances, providing a lovely sound which drifted around the event giving that relaxed party feel!

Rock WI and a ‘Save the Children’ stall had lots of homemade produce for sale and the RNLI lifeboat stall were ahead of the game with Christmas Cards and 2020 calendars for sale. The Bliss Gate Playing Fields fundraising stall had many bargains to be snapped up including trays of apples. More bargains could be found upstairs in the hall, amongst the bric-a-brac.

The UK’s relations with its Continental neighbours may be in flux, but ties between Tenbury Wells and the French town of Pont-du-Casse remain as close as ever. Over the weekend of 16-19 August, a group of 36 Tenbury residents of very varied ages enjoyed the hospitality of families in the similarly-sized French town, which lies in the southeast of the country, near the city of Agen.

This year’s guest programme included a guided tour of Agen’s historic centre, a visit to a local castle, rides around the area in locals’ classic cars and attendance at the town’s open-air “gourmet market” where local food and drink, coupled with music and dancing, kept the thousand-plus crowd entertained long into the balmy summer night.

The trip also gave a chance for twinning regulars the Tenbury Town Band to entertain their hosts at Pont-duCasse’s Petit Paradis club, where visitors joined locals in some traditional dancing.

Many of the group took the opportunity to prolong their stay and explore the wider area afterwards.

Tenbury has regularly sent and received groups as part of the twinning initative, which began in the early 1980s. A group of “Cassepontins” is due to visit Tenbury in 2021, with the Twinning Association planning fundraising and social Historical tour of Agen events in the meantime.

Hereford Sixth Form College was a happy place on this year’s A Level Results Day. Strong results above the national benchmark have been a feature of the College for many years and the students’ performance was again excellent at both A Level and within the increasingly popular vocational courses.

National benchmarks were exceeded in many subjects with particularly strong performances in English, Languages and the STEM subjects including the new vocational Engineering course which had 52% distinctions or above.

Overall pass rates were again above national averages, the College’s pass rate being 99.2% compared with the national average of 97.6%, a huge success story.

A remarkable 73 students achieved all A*/A grades with a further 7 achieving 3 grade As or more and one achieved 5 grade A*/As at A Level. These top performers compare with leading independent and state schools and colleges in the country. 225 students also gained Distinctions in their vocational courses.

Peter Cooper, College Principal, was delighted with the efforts of students. “They have done themselves proud and I am sure they will now go on to build great futures for themselves by continuing the hard work they have shown at the College. I know that they would wish me to thank both their magnificent teachers and the wonderful support staff on their behalf, who are also part of our great success story. Local artists staged another successful exhibition of art, in many varied forms, at Ludlow Art Society's Summer Exhibition in late August. Held in St Laurence's church in Ludlow, locals and visitors alike could get much pleasure from browsing the display of work in this grand and fascinating setting.

The Mayor's Choice prize winner was Alicia Lothian's study, using lipstick, called 'Conflict' (pic 1).

The Chang Thai prize winner was Peter Ramage's colourful oil on canvas entitled 'Promenade on the Pier - 1905' (pic 2).

The Twenty Twenty Gallery prize winner was Samuel Bebb's acrylic: 'Beehives, Kefalonia' (pic 3).

"Last month I met Inspector Nikki Roberts, who leads South Shropshire policing, to discuss steps being taken to prevent and tackle crime in our communities.

In light of the Prime Minister’s pledge to increase police officer numbers by 20,000, I am determined to see rural areas like Shropshire benefit - and was encouraged to hear that the Chief Constable is allocating an additional 10 substantive police constables to South Shropshire. The result of this increase is effectively a 50% increase in the safer neighbourhood teams in Ludlow and Bridgnorth on each shift - a very welcome increase! This follows a record 56 officers joining West Mercia Police in July alone, as part of recruitment of 115 new officers.

West Mercia Police are also taking encouraging steps to help prevent rural crime, an issue which I know West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion takes seriously. So I was pleased to meet the 'We Don’t Buy Crime' officer, who was promoting use of SmartWater to Craven Arms’ Mayor and Shropshire Councillor, and encouraging adoption across communities in Shropshire following the lead taken in Cleobury Mortimer where domestic burglary was reduced dramatically.

SmartWater individually marks goods of value with a unique identifier which is invisible to the naked eye, but is revealed under Ultra Violet light, and links the goods marked direct to the household of the owner. Each West Mercia officer carries a UV torch so can look for SmartWater-marked goods whenever suspicious of a theft.

This has been successful in reducing and disrupting the market for stolen goods, protecting homes and possessions by making them less attractive to the would-be criminal. So West Mercia is looking to extend this scheme to cover farms, to combat a recent spike east of the A49 in recent months.

Little Hereford Voices

Little Hereford Voices is a non-audition community choir formed in 2011, with around 35 regular singers from the local area. The choir gives three concerts a year - Christmas, Easter & Summer.

This Christmas will see the choir perform a new piece written for them by their Musical Director Kimee Cleaton. The piece, described as a Concert Musical, is entitled ‘From Darkness to Light’ and is a re-telling of the Nativity story but with original music and songs.

powers being given to Police under stop and search through a nationwide pilot, with more than 8,000 police officers authorised to use enhanced stop and search powers, as part of Government efforts to crack down on violent crime. While knives are used in fewer serious crime in West Mercia compared to the national average (4% rather than 6%), and indeed is far below the worst hotspots for knife crime like certain parts of London and Birmingham, this is welcome step to tackle a growing problem in society, particularly for young people.

The new government has also outlined plans to review sentencing for the most serious offenders, including not letting prisoners out automatically partway through a sentence and reviewing how to break the cycle of repeat offending. The Justice Secretary has announced a further £85 million for the Crown Prosecution Service to build capacity over the next 2 years, with an extra £2.5 billion investment to create 10,000 extra prison places. I hope this renewed focus on tackling and preventing crime, both nationally and in south Shropshire, will help make streets safer in communities across the UK."

Richard Bell - The Old Harbour, Fishguard £85

TEME VALLEY TIMES St Mary's Church in Burford held an art exhibition featuring local artists in early August with free admission and refreshments on tap (donations welcome). Artists exhibiting included John Instance with his exquisite watercolours, Richard Bell's oils and watercolours, Jennifer Chance prints, Katie Fitchett's delightful ink pen and watercolour studies and Rita M Phillips' watercolours and mixed media artworks.

Step into the Past

For many years, Maggie Kingston and Jenny Northwood have been running what can only be described as 'historical get-togethers' for Stoke Bliss and Kyre. The idea is that anyone with a connection to the area can come along and have a look at the large amount of archival material on display.

A connection might be family-related or a particular property, or sometimes it's just a local resident who wants to learn more. Lots of reading goes on, as do sharing of memories, exchange of information and the collating of facts, all helping to improve the archive of 'everything Stoke Bliss & Kyre' compiled by Maggie.

Historical booklets and History Walk booklets were available to purchase along with cards and crafts to help with fundraising. Free to attend, donations to Stoke Bliss and Kyre Churches were gratefully received, and of course there were plenty of refreshments to keep visitors fed and watered while they delved into the past.

The celebrations of the centenary of the establishment of Women's Institute markets, where homemade, home-grown and home-crafted goods are sold, have raised awareness that the markets are still going strong, albeit in a different guise.

Country Markets now continue the tradition and Ludlow Country Market welcomed visitors to one of their markets with complimentary strawberry scones and a cuppa. The market runs from 8.45am to 12noon on Saturdays but if you would like the best choice it's better to get there earlier rather than later.

The market is held in the Women's Centre off Church Lane, in the centre of Ludlow, with an A-board to point you in the right direction. When we visited, art, crafts, plants, beautiful bouquets of freshly-cut flowers, free-range eggs, woodturning and lots of cakes, pastries, pies, biscuits, quiches, ready meals and preserves filled the tables.

Lower field vehicle displays This two day show is held on the Far Forest Society's showground at Callow Hill and is one way in which the Society endeavours to meet its charitable objective of providing facilities and opportunities for recreation and leisure time occupation. It is the highlight of the Society's year.

The weather did its best to impede things with high winds and rain but by late morning on the Sunday the clouds had cleared, at least for a time, and the sun actually shone!

The showground had stands on the upper and lower fields and tractor trailer rides were available to take you round the showground to gain a good view of all the activities.

Teas were available in the main marquee where Far Forest WI might expect to supply over 1,000 cups of tea

during the weekend, along with cakes and freshly made sandwiches.

You could alternatively take a cream tea in the pavilion, this also hosted an art exhibition. A craft marquee, food marquee, horticultural show, mobile gin bar (with a choice of over 35 gins), children's fun zone, Wizard of Oz treasure hunt, have-a-go tennis, classic caravans, dog shows, Temevale Alpacas, pony rides, classic vehicles, wrestling displays and more all added to the fun.

Main arena acts included Tenbury Town Band, Welsh Axe Men, Gamegoer dogs, Zennor Dance Academy and Falconry with further displays in the lower field ring.

The 'live music' stage, and the Home and Garden Theatre stage provided more entertainment across the two days.

New Home for Tenbury Museum?

The Tenbury Museum and History Group Trustees have been in discussions with Tesco regarding the Old Fire Station building at the entrance to the town.

Agreement to a long lease has now been reached in principle, subject to securing planning permission and funding to undertake the necessary work.

Liz Finlay, Chair of the Trustees, said “A Condition Survey on the Old Fire Station building has been completed so our next task is to appoint an architect to help us draw up the designs for the conversion so that we can apply for planning permission. We will then need to raise the necessary funding to undertake the work. It has been a long-held aspiration for the Museum to move to a more central location and more suitable premises. We hope the Old Fire Station will enable us to achieve our ambitions for the museum and the town.”

The Museum and History Group has recently secured an 'Awards for All' grant from the National Lottery towards the costs of the architect fees.

Gardening Club Summer Show Clows Top's Victory Hall was packed with colourful exhibits and blooms as the Gardening Club's 72nd Summer Show opened its doors on 17 August.

This year a couple of sections had a 'hints & tips' sheet drawn up by the judge to help exhibitors - it's always useful to have pointers! The preserves section had the tip 'No fingermarks or stickiness on jars'.

With 89 classes there were many winners. To mention a few, Marion Wilson took first prize in the chutney class with red tomato chutney and first prize in the soft fruit jam class with raspberry jam. Deborah Dickinson won first in 'stone fruit jam' with her plum jam.

Christine Jones took first in the 'Coffee and Walnut sandwich cake' class, Juliet Hole won the 'Five pieces of Tray Bake' class and Mo Killingworth took first

prize and 'Best Exhibit' of the cookery classes with her beetroot and chocolate cake.

In the floral art class 'Down the Local' an exhibit for a pub sign, The Sun & Slipper, The Cobblers Arms, and The Ship arrangements all showed great imagination.

Anna Whymant gained first prize for her colour photograph in the class 'Reflections' and Marion Cox took first for her skilfully knitted cardigan in the 'Hand knitted article' class.

In the vegetable section Tom Bore, Ray Ingram, Ray Nightingale, Ted Mills were frequent prize winners and class 20 '1 Cucumber' had a very healthy entry of 12 cucumbers!

Refreshments were very popular, with tea/coffee and a slice of cake for £1.50, and outside the hall were further stalls selling plants, toys and bric-a-brac.

New Resources for Tackling Crime Dedicated rural and business crime vehicles will soon be on the roads of West Mercia, following funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The five new vehicles, with the distinctive ‘Rural Matters’ and ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ branding, will be based across the force area and will be used by officers to support rural communities and work to reduce crime.

PCC John Campion said “Officers can often spend a large amount of time travelling around the large swathes of countryside that makes up West Mercia - supporting communities and businesses to prevent crime, and cope and recover quickly when it does occur. We’ve invested in additional officers and I want to make sure that they have the right tools needed to carry out their roles effectively and efficiently. I also hope that communities will be reassured, when they see these new vehicles, that there is preventative work taking place within the area they live.”

Fountain Fest at Oldwood

This photo, by Keith Gluyas, shows ‘Without Flight’, one of the bands performing at this year’s Fountain Fest - a mini music festival held in August at The Fountain Inn, just outside Tenbury Wells.

You didn’t have to be green fingered to participate in this, the club’s 39th show. Looking at the number of entries, about 17, in the ‘Gin based cordial’ class there are a lot of budding artisan drink producers in the club.

Similarly there were a lot of budding cider and perry makers - gardening is obviously thirsty work! Winners in this section were David Flory with his 100% Blakeney Reds sweet perry, D Harrison with his cider, Paul Smith with a non-alcoholic elderflower cordial, Brian Bartlett with his raspberry vodka and M Lyon with a damson gin. Apparently it was arranged that the judge would be given a lift home.....

There were many other prize winners but to mention a few: Gail Scott 1st for 3 dahlia blooms, Nuchia Mortimer 1st for 3 rose blooms and a 1st for culinary herbs, Kate Griffiths 1st for her ‘Box of Delights’ miniature flower arrangement and Avril Blanchot gained 1st for her ‘Potato apple cake with cream cheese and lime icing’ and 1st with ‘Best Exhibit’ cookery section for her ‘Raspberry Bakewell Cake’ Refreshments and a raffle helped with fundraising.

Raffle prize sponsors included The Bakers Arms (£50 voucher), Philpotts Nursery of Leominster (£10 voucher), B&Q (propagator and seeds) and Ludlow Homecare (pot plant).

Held over three days in Bodenham Village Hall (30 Aug - 1 Sept) this was a celebratory exhibition as this quilting group has been in existence for some 30 years. It has around 60 members, with about 40 exhibiting work. The venue seemed an excellent choice with easy parking and a well-lit main hall which could do justice to the quilts.

Many quilts and hangings had comment cards attached. Some were wonderfully disarming, others revealed the reason for a quilt’s beginnings.

One piece started out as a medallion quilt but became a floral wall hanging.

One expansive quilt was made from old shirts of the quilter’s son - outgrown following sessions at the gym! The quilt was fittingly described as a ‘Ted Baker Original’.

We learnt that a large Liberty fabric hexagon quilt took eight years to complete. One quilt design was inspired by old china fragments found in the garden and more recent china tea sets. June Edwards described her sizeable hand quilted wholecloth as “A labour of love, requiring a lot of patience. It seemed a good idea at the time.” Another hanging entitled “I love a sunburnt country” was inspired by a photograph taken in Queensland, Australia.

Another quilter confessed that the exhibition was just the incentive she needed to get her hanging finished in time for it to be shown.

This was a stunning exhibition with some extraordinary work, all of which repaid careful examination - the intricacy was considerable and the creativity inspiring.

A raffle, trade stalls and home-made lunches and refreshment meant you could easily spend time enjoying this event.

A mini quilt competition invited members to create a quilt on the theme of ‘celebration’ and an eclectic collection of A4 size quilts were submitted for judging; fireworks, a popping bottle of bubbly, sayings relating to quilters entitled ‘Quilters Pearls of Wisdom’, celebration cakes all featured in the designs. In addition to the judge’s decision, visitors to the show were invited to vote for their favourite mini quilt

'It is time to visit Pudleston' said Winnie-thePooh and so Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeeyore and Pooh set off down the leafy country lanes to discover what delights lay in store for the intrepid explorers.

'I hope there is plenty to eat when we get there' said Pooh, wondering quite what a bear might be offered to eat in the deepest darkest countryside that is Pudleston. But Pooh needn't to have worried.

A warm welcome greeted visitors at the Church over the weekend of 10 & 11 August with a fine, well-stocked refreshment tent and a 'Pooh and Piglet tavern' serving only the very best of ales and cider to refresh even the most

exhausted Bear and his friends! It was indeed a 'Friendly Day' as Pooh might have said.

Entitled 'The Wisdom of Winnie the Pooh' this was another stunning flower festival. On Saturday a descendant of E H Shepard, the illustrator who brought all the characters to life, dropped by to enjoy the displays which featured many of Shepherd's familiar illustrations.

The magnificent centre piece of the festival depicted Pooh, Piglet and Christopher Robin playing pooh-sticks off a bridge in a waterside setting complete with running stream.

We learnt that Christopher Robin Milne's own toys on which the animal characters are based are on display in New York where around 750,000 people visit them every year; that E H Shepherd also illustrated The Wind in the Willows; and that not yet known as Winnie-thePooh, the bear first appeared in a poem in Punch Magazine as 'Edward Bear' in February 1924.

Burford House Motor Show

The fourth Burford House & Gardens Motor Show took place at Burford near Tenbury Wells on Sunday 4th August.

The event was free for car exhibitors and visitors alike and the splendid surroundings made for a pleasant day of browsing the great variety of vehicles which were on show in the grounds.

Brimfield Vintage Working Day

The weather dawned bright and sunny for Brimfield Vintage Club's Working Day just oďŹ&#x20AC; the A456 near the Salwey Arms. Harvesting was the theme of the day and old combines, binders, a threshing box and other harvesting equipment were put through their (slow!) paces, showing onlookers how things used to be done. What a contrast to today's tractors and combine harvesters.

machinery on display, including stationary engines, classic cars, lorries, a dumper truck; this sums up the 'raison d'etre' for the day.

There was an excellent display of Land Rovers from the Series 2 Club and the Land Rover Family Club. It was interesting to discover how diďŹ&#x20AC;erent two nominally similar Defenders could be. And of course there was tractor pulling!

Numerous food stalls, including fish and chips, catered to any hunger pangs. Craft

stalls, the Brimfield club stall (with tombola), clothing, tools, liquorice stall, face painting, charity fundraising stalls, wood marble machines (with their operations mesmerising observers for minutes), vintage items for sale including a classic Qualcast 'Super Panther' push mower, or archive films on DVD showing how to maintain your David Brown tractor and how to get the best out of the Selectamatic range - all added further interest to the day.

Tenbury & District Art Club This art group held an exhibition from from 29 July - 3 August, in the former Post Office in Tenbury Wells. It's not the biggest of spaces but it was amazing how much the group had managed to fit in - and display attractively! The group meets on Thursdays 2-4pm and again in the evening 7-9pm; if you would like any more information contact Margaret Dallow 01584 811706.

Brimfield Show

This year Brimfield Show formed part of a Community Weekend for the village. There was a 5k fun run and a charity coffee morning (in aid of St Michael's Hospice) on the Saturday, with the horticultural show on the Sunday. A treasure hunt and 'novice' ferret racing were also planned for the Sunday plus a 'weekend wrap-up' party with live music from the Sixties at the end of the afternoon.

The show had its usual array of flowers, vegetables, cookery, art, craft, fruit, floral art and preserves. Cream teas (only £2) were available in the Blewitt Room, with gluten free and vegan shortbread options.

1945 - Women's Timber Corps, or 'Lumber Jills’, working at Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk A hundred years ago, many of the forests seen in England today didn’t exist. The nation’s tree cover had steadily declined since the Middle Ages and the First World War had left many woodlands in a state of disrepair. The Forestry Act was passed on 1st September 1919 and the Forestry Commission came into being.

Since then, the Commission has more than doubled England’s forest cover, having planted more than two million acres of forest and it has evolved from focusing on production to protecting wildlife and encouraging public access and recreation.

To celebrate the milestone, the Commission has released a collection of photos from its archives telling the story of forestry in this country, from 1919-2019. Here is a selection.

Eastham Fete

Flower & Produce Show laid out in the church On August 18th, Eastham Fete was held on a delightfully sunny and quintessentially English afternoon. The black clouds threatened but the rain stayed away from this well-supported fete with vehicles soon filling the parking.

The fete and flower show are fundraisers for the church and the hall and it was easy to join in the fun and spend a pound or two on activities or refreshments or that 'essential' piece of bric-a-brac and help with fundraising.

Lots of smiles all round indicated that young and old were enjoying the day and a friendly atmosphere pervaded as groups of people chatted and spent time catching up.

Elsewhere 'Pampered Ponies' were giving 'free rides for little people', courtesy of Chapman Opticians. Plate smashing was a cathartic experience for some, while Malvern Chase Brass Band produced an entirely different sound and made a refreshment stop at the adjacent tea tent a very melodious and enjoyable musical interlude.

Keith Gluyas says cheers A children's fun area even had a makeshift sandpit for making sandcastles. The fun dog show was as popular as ever and there were information tables about the Eastham Residents Association and the plans for Eastham Memorial Hall. With so much to see and do this was an excellent effort by the organisers and helpers.

Eastham dwellers and 'Malverns Worldwide' founders Cora Weaver and Bruce Osbourne were hosting Lynne Frederick and Barbara Rutz, two Malvernologists from the Historical Commission in Malvern, Pennsylvania, USA. They came along to see the fete and the flower and produce show in the ancient church. They were also introduced to an English hot dog and enjoyed meeting local residents.

Worcester Renault & Dacia Launch Night Craven Arms and District Model Railway Circle's second exhibition of the year at the Pavilion at Ludlow Racecourse was held on August 17th. Easy to find with good access and parking, when we arrived the event was already buzzing with visitors enjoying the layouts and various trade stands.

The largest layout was brought by the Alsager Railway Association: it depicted a busy modern mainline station connected to a branch line and diesel depot. There was lots to see on this layout.

Will Jarman was displaying his Arley Station and Victoria Bridge models; these would be familiar to anyone who knows the Severn Valley Railway. Dan Evason from Leominster's model railway club brought his 'Tunnel Lane' layout of a fictitious branch line (soon to be closed) in

Herefordshire - this was Dan's first exhibition with this, the first layout he built. It was very picturesque, with a charming back story.

Robin Fox showed his delightful 'Stamford East' N scale layout where the track plan and station are accurately modelled and the buildings represent real Stamford buildings. Tim Williams brought his 'Bryn Tegid' 009 scale model which incorporated a working Dinorwic-style transporter incline - great fun.

Chatting to the exhibitors about their layouts can be fascinating and educational. For example, on the 'Gould Street' layout you could have found yourself talking to a man who makes decisions about cancelling trains in the 'real world' - this layout was designed for use as a training device for operational staff at Cross Country Trains!

The Jazz has been part of Britain's motoring scenery for years. It's wellknown for its practicality and it offered a wide range of features including reliability, ease of getting in and out and the amount of interior space compared to the car's modest size.

most obvious manifestation of this change, reinforced by the relatively recent availability of a 'Sport' model with a more powerful 1.5-litre engine. The new look to the body panels, with obvious contours and a generally more interesting appearance, has been successful in terms of increasing the model's visual appeal, while the 1.5-litre engine gave buyers the option of a performance level that hadn't previously been offered in a Jazz.

Returning to the car's practicality, one of the big plus points is the 'magic seats'.

These are the rear seats and not only do they fold down easily a quickly to provide a large flat load platform, they also fold in another way that can be particularly helpful if you need to carry tall or heavy items.

The trick here is that the seat squabs can fold upwards, creating a tall load platform, potentially from the floor to the car's roof.

The central location of the load is of particular benefit if you need to carry something heavy, and the fact that the

Subaru XV

Peugeot 508

This 508 is an all-new model, not simply an evolution of the previous 508, and its sharp styling means it really stands out from the crowd, in fact it's one of the best-looking cars of its size. Peugeot describe it as a fastback saloon which is perhaps fair enough in terms of what the car looks like.

The interior is also nicely done and the result is an interesting addition to the executive car park. Some of these larger models can look a little dull but this 508 has a personality of its own.

As you might expect from Peugeot, the 508 is

available with a variety of engines, both petrol and diesel, and a number of trim levels. Engine options are the entry-level 1.5 130PS diesel, a 1.6-litre petrol in 180PS and 225PS forms, and a 2-litre diesel with 160 or 180PS; one unusual feature is that manual transmission is only available with the 130PS diesel - other versions are only available as automatics.

This is a large car but it's not as long as some of its competitors, which makes life a little easier if you're looking for a parking spot. Despite its size, the steering is quick, though this might possibly be exaggerated by Peugeot's small

Compact crossovers are commonly based on existing hatchbacks. The result is a car with a higher driving position and a more rugged appearance, but it is basically designed for use on Tarmac. This approach appeals to many buyers and recent years have seen a substantial growth in this market sector.

Typically these crossovers either have only front wheel drive, or an "on demand" four wheel drive system, where part of the engine's output is sent to the rear wheels when the car's electronics detect the need.

Subaru take a different approach, one which has served them well for many years. Subaru earned their reputation in the UK by supplying well-engineered and dependable cars with full-time four wheel drive and disregarding the overtly sporty BRZ - this is the approach Subaru still takes.

Consequently, rather than their crossover being based on an everyday hatchback or estate, Subaru use a platform that was designed from the ground up to incorporate four wheel drive. So with the XV, you know you're not only buying a car that looks like it should perform off road, you're buying a car that actually could cope with challenging conditions.

Subaru's other distinctive feature is their flatfour 'Boxer' engine, which the manufacturer says gives their cars a lower centre of gravity and a "more balanced weight distribution".

The current XV also stands out from the crowd by only being offered with 'Lineartronic' CVT automatic transmission, and by there not being a diesel option.

All versions of the XV incorporate Subaru's

steering wheel.

The roofline is low, which helps give the car a rakish appearance, but the doors are frameless, so there is a slightly larger door opening than there otherwise would be. It also means that the windows drop slightly when the doors are opened or closed, which makes the doors smoother to close; a nice touch.

The almost coupe-style roof shape means that headroom in the rear seats isn't very generous, so you might want to check this out if you expect to carry tall

'Eyesight' system which uses dual cameras to detect other vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians. When a potential hazard is identified, EyeSight warns the driver and can apply the brakes if necessary, to help avoid a collision. This system is also designed to protect drivers who park facing an obstacle, then accidentally set off in drive rather then reverse!

There are two engine options, two-litre or 1.6-litre, offering 156 and 114 PS respectively. The larger engine offers significantly stronger acceleration, cutting the 0-60 mph sprint by about three seconds.

The extra £1,200 is good value, particularly as the two-litre comes with paddle shift and with 18-inch wheels, rather than 17-inch.

All versions are well-equipped, with LED headlights, hill descent control, rear cross traffic alert, a reversing camera and keyless entry with push-button start. If you want even more, for an extra £2,000 the 'Premium' version adds leather upholstery, a sunroof, an electrically-adjustable driver's seat and satnav.

The XV offers a decent amount of space for rear seat passengers and the boot is a good size, though not huge. Compliant suspension means it delivers a comfortable ride and the excellent brakes provide reassuring stopping power.

Where costs are concerned, on the road prices start at about £24,000 and run up to around £28,500, excluding any optional extras. The 1.6-litre model I drove averaged 39.7mpg according to the car's computer and a five-year 100,000 mile warranty is standard.

I drove one of the most powerful options, a 225PS in GT trim. This certainly delivered good performance, with a top speed of 155mph, and the ability to cover the 0-60 sprint in about seven seconds. Yet despite this sporty potential, it was easy to average 40mpg, with more being available on a run, indeed a trip back from the Welsh coast saw the trip computer indicating 43mpg.

The test 'GT' had features such as heated seats with massage (with a choice of difference modes and intensities), a powered tailgate, LED headlights, adaptive cruise and 19-inch wheels.

Of course, lower specification models are less lavishly equipped.

Prices start at £25,560 for an Active 1.5HDi with manual transmission, or £27,160 with automatic. At the top end of the range, the 225PS GT driven for this review comes in at £36,735, with the 180PS diesel-engined GT being a little more expensive, at £36,960.
