‘We are going places - it’s what we do’

Bromyard staged what is thought to have been the first World Championship Hop Pocket Race on 3rd September 2011. This year’s event took place in pleasantly sunny weather on Saturday August 27th. The event involves teams of four carrying a full-size hop pocket, against the clock, around a road course of 553 yards. The weight of the hop pocket depends on the class, the heaviest being 70kg for the Senior Open class. The event is sponsored by Wye Valley Brewery and hop merchant Charles Faram & Co, who provide World Championship Trophies for the winning teams and mementoes to each team member. Hop Festival

This year’s Hop Pocket Races attracted a wide variety of entries, with Fancy Dress, Children’s, Youth’s, and Women’s classes, as well as the Senior Open class, and this variety certainly helped raise the visual interest. The spectators did a good job of encouraging the competitors with applause and shouts, with a particularly vocal section outside the Falcon, urging the racers on their way towards the finish line! As well as the races, the day included a craft fair and hop heritage displays at the Falcon, music in the Square, swing boats, pig roast, trap rides, and various other goings-on, helping to make sure that there was plenty for people to do. Especially with the summery weather, this was a family-friendly fun day out, helped by there being such a wide choice of places to eat and drink, many of which looked to be doing a roaring trade.

Streetworks in Tenbury

The next phase of the ‘Public Realm’ scheme in Tenbury is due to start on Monday September 11th. This will take place in Teme Street, from the end of the work carried out earlier this year as part of the Tesco scheme, to the raised table (often referred to as a speed hump) near the Crow. The pavement and the road will both be resurfaced in the same style as the work that has already been carried out in Teme Street and Market Street, and new bins, bollards, signage and planters will be installed. Changes to street lighting and pedestrian crossing facilities are also planned. The Tenbury Wells Public Realm Project Team commented “Normal working hours will be between 7.30am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday although there may be occasional variances to this pattern when required. Although disruption will be kept to a minimum it will be necessary for traffic management to be used during the works.” The traffic management is expect to include traffic lights, for at least part of the time, and it is hoped that the project will be completed before the beginning of December.

Velo Birmingham The Velo Birmingham bicycle ride, on September 24th, starts and finishes in Birmingham. It will see thousands of cyclists pedalling their way through a sizeable chunk of Worcestershire, including Bewdley, Dunley, Great Witley and Ombersley. Road closures include Bewdley to Great Witley via Dunley (due to be closed from 7.30am to 2.30pm), and Great Witley to Droitwich (via Holt Fleet Bridge and Ombersley) which is scheduled to be closed from 8am to 3.30pm. A number of businesses on the route have said that the closures mean they will not be able to open.

Pump Rooms Open The Pump Rooms are Tenbury’s most iconic building, but they are usually closed at the weekend, which limits their potential as a tourist attraction. To address this, the Tenbury Museum Society has been opening them to the public periodically. August 26th, the Saturday of the Bank Holiday Weekend, was one of these Open Days. A number of people, including visitors

and local residents, took the opportunity to have a look round. Interesting features include one of the baths, where people could bathe in the mineral water during Tenbury’s Spa years, and the drinking fountain, which dispensed water in the old days. In addition, there is the well itself, in which water can still be seen. Further Open Days will be held during the autumn.

Rain Stopped Play On August 18th, an enormous downpour brought a Bouncy Castle Day at St Mary’s in Tenbury to a premature end, but the event had been popular before the rain. Sadly, once the storm arrived, it quickly became a wash-out. People attending the event could hardly miss seeing the scaffolding around the church tower, which is in place due to the work that is taking place. This includes replacing the tower roof and installing replacement leadwork. A substantial grant from the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund made it possible for this refurbishment work to be undertaken, but a considerable amount has also been raised locally. The work is due to finish in December.

Music Festival Following the third Tenbury Music Festival, a cheque for £1,000, to the Teenage Cancer Trust, was presented on July 24th, on The Burgage, where the festival was held. Festival Director Graham James (right in photo) said “We are delighted to provide funding support to Teenage Cancer Trust again and wish to thank everybody who attended our fantastic music festival for their support”. Music Director Phil Blackmore (left) added “Our excellent line up this year, which created such an

exciting atmosphere, was only possible because key musicians wanted to do their bit for Teenage Cancer Trust and we look forward to building on this success next year.” Charlotte Kendall of the Teenage Cancer Trust responded “We have a huge music heritage with our Royal Albert Hall shows which take place each year. The support of Tenbury Music Festival has been fantastic and we want to thank the people of Tenbury for supporting such a fabulous event”.

League Shop The League of Friends of Tenbury Hospital is to hold another fund-raising shop in Tenbury Wells. It is due to be open for two weeks, starting on Saturday September 16th, but there will be volunteers on hand to accept donated items on Friday 15th. The location is once again the unit down the passage at the side of Banfields, in the middle of Teme Street. Offers of help, particularly with setting up the shop and with clearing things away at the end of the fortnight, would be very welcome, and if you can help, you can ring Muriel Lanman on 01584 810921.

Eastham Fete and Flower Show A fete with extras would describe Eastham Fete. Not only was there a traditional fete to enjoy, but also a Flower, Produce and Handicraft Show in the historic Memorial Hall. Amongst the prize winners were Sylvia Breakwell who earned 1st prize for her jar of apricot jam, and the comment ‘Well set, superb flavour and colour’. Katie Lavender won 1st prize for her collage of Donald Trump with the comment ‘A wonderful likeness - I love the hair!’ Drawings showing what the proposed replacement village hall could look like were on display in the hall, along with a sheet of FAQ’s

about the project. The judge was impressed with the entries in the Coffee Cake class noting ‘An outstanding set of entries. Well done everyone’. In the late afternoon, many exhibits from the Show were auctioned off, so people could come away with some huge dahlia blooms, or scones, jams or vegetables. Outside the Hall, the Tenbury U3A Ukulele Band, fresh from their appearance at the KingsFest in Tenbury the previous day, kept the tunes going most of the afternoon. A fun dog show took centre stage on the Green in the early afternoon, with winners receiving rosettes. There were also various stalls, and youngsters could let off steam with a choice of inflatable fun - from a ‘Jungle Run’ bouncy castle to sausage-balloon spaceships, animals and hats! Kebabs, burgers and sausages meant you could have a late lunch or early tea while you were there, and a well-stocked bar catered to those who had a thirst for more than tea or coffee. The fete was well supported, with the tombola clearing all its prizes early on, and with few cakes remaining on the refreshment stall at the end of the day.

Parking Cost to Double?

At present, the minimum cost of parking in the ‘Pay and Display’ car park in Tenbury Wells is 50p, for a one-hour ticket. Malvern Hills District Council is considering withdrawing this ticket, in which case people wanting to stop briefly would need to buy a twohour ticket for £1. Consequently the minimum cost of parking would double. The minimum cost in Malvern would stay at 50p, because the District Council plans to continue selling one hour tickets in the short stay car parks in Malvern. The proposals also include the introduction of a new overnight ticket which will provide a saving for people who park overnight. The current ‘evening’ ticket, valid from 6pm to midnight, costs £1.50, whereas the new overnight ticket, also costing £1.50, would be valid from 4pm through until 8am the following morning. Tenbury Town Council’s ‘free of charge’ car park, by the swimming pool, would not be affected by the proposals.

Rochford Fete Rochford Fete saw locals out in force to enjoy a pleasant afternoon in a delightful setting by the church and alongside the River Teme. Of course, only the ducks in the duck race actually got to swim in the river! The produce stall had a few treats for those who browsed - homemade raspberry jam, French beans, runner beans, local peaches - delicious - and local plums - also delicious - and almost zero food miles! A grand draw, tombola, martial arts demonstration by The Kajuen Ryu, long-grass boules, bubble makers, ‘Milk the Cow’ and lots of other games provided opportunities for people to have a bit of fun, while the fun dog show gave our four-legged friends an opportunity to have some fun too especially the last class ‘Race to Owner’! The cake stall sold out early on but cream teas were available all afternoon, which also provided an opportunity to sit down and have a chat.

Teme Valley Times Luckily the weather stayed dry, albeit a bit windy, on August 19th, for Martley’s annual Show. Originally just a Horticultural Show, it has blossomed into a great family afternoon out. Lots of stalls, a funfair, a horticultural show in the Village Hall, Worcester Brass Band and Worcester Scout Marching Band meant there was plenty to do, and lots of free activities, such as the Community Games, plus free entry, helped make it an inclusive event. At one end of the field, Martley Parish Council has provided a new purpose-built skatepark out of ‘106’ monies received from the new housing development opposite the village hall. It was officially opened at the show by local lad Joe Fox and it was immediately busy with skateboards, scooters and bmx bikes. Space hopper races, hula hoop competitions, piggy-back races and ‘Blindfold’ races (where a blindfolded parent was guided by children to the finish line) ensured an afternoon of fun and smiles. With just four on the organising committee, Martley Show is dependent on others helping out and Pat Owen, one of the organisers, commented ‘It is really good how everyone is willing to help in any way they can; whether offering to run the BBQ, or supplying the bales of hay to sit on, or donating a prize for the tombola. We had over 150 prizes on the Tombola this year. It is just amazing how willing people are to get involved. I would just like to say a very big thank you to everyone who helped out in any way, whether a regular volunteer or a new helper.’ Money raised is split between village groups and charities, so it benefits the local area.

A selection of acrylics by David Tedham Ludlow Art Society held their Summer Art Exhibition in late August in St Laurence’s Church. A great variety of sizes, subject matters and techniques were on show, along with the addition of fabric hangings this year. There were prices to suit every pocket, from £10 for an unframed work, up to several hundred for a large canvas and it was once again an excellent opportunity to purchase a piece of original art, whether for the home or as a gift. At the preview evening, Ludlow Mayor Tim Gill officially opened the exhibition saying that he remembers his first visit to one of the society’s exhibitions, in a school hall in 1982, and that looking round displays such as these makes him wish he could produce such work! He was also invited to choose his favourite piece of art. The synergy of holding the exhibition in the church in Ludlow works well; some people who would not usually visit the church will come in to look at the exhibition, while visitors to the church experience the bonus of discovering an Art Exhibition!

Brimfield Show The doors opened at 2pm as Brimfield’s 2017 Show got underway in the village hall on August 20th. Judging had started in the morning and many prize cards were visible around the exhibit tables. The ‘free to enter’ Junior section had an increased number of entries and with 4 age groups, covering 0-11yrs, it was easy to involve the whole family! Hopefully the youngsters will continue to take part for many years. In the Cookery and Preserves section, the judges of many years - Mrs & Miss Hadley - retired from judging and grateful thanks were expressed for ‘the expertise they have brought to judging’. Roger Beamond (chef at Tenbury’s Spotty Dog café) took on the judging of this section and also of the children’s cookery section. In the class ‘A ‘vegetable’ cake’ N Monk’s 1st prize-winning ‘Sweet Potato and Ginger’ cake prompted Roger to ask for the recipe to use in the café! An unusual ‘passion fruit curd’ won class 44, with the comment ‘Excellent’. There were some fun classes such as ‘Amusing photograph with caption’ or ‘Most grotesque fruit or vegetable’ and floral art themes included ‘By the Sea’ and ‘A Day at the Races’. Lots of hard work went into staging this show for organisers and competitors alike. Raffle prizes included a top quality spade, a Summer punch parcel, a bottle of Sauternes, a cream tea for two at Froggatts Farm Shop, a bottle of Merlot and Prosecco from The Roebuck, a £20 voucher from the Salwey Arms, a bottle of Baileys and a hybrid-tea Rose from Ludlow Homecare

Great Witley Arts and Crafts Once again this August Bank Holiday weekend event provided an excellent opportunity to find high quality crafts and works of art on the doorstep. Set in the stunning interior of Great Witley Church, the exhibition is always worth seeing, despite the bumpy ride down the un-metalled track to the church! The sheer variety of work meant there was something to suit most tastes and pockets from a print at £15 to a large oil painting at over £1,000. Woodcraft and ceramics added interest, as did demonstrations by some of the exhibiting artists. The preview evening on the Thursday was well-supported, with the wide range of beautifully-presented canapés helping to sustain visitors as they browsed the art exhibition!

On August 6th a varied selection of classic cars gathered at Burford House. An array of MGs and a collection of Minis each drew many glances, while further away from the house itself an eclectic assortment of cars provided further interest. Arguably the visual star of the show was a decidedly blue Chevrolet, with its combination of size and flamboyance making it wonderfully unmissable!

Clows Top Summer Garden Show A rather special show took place in Clows Top Victory Hall on August 19th. This was the Clows Top & District Gardening Club’s 70th Show - an impressive achievement - and Club members gathered for a little celebration, complete with a 70th Birthday cake! The show exhibits filled the hall and merited careful inspection, especially the prize winning arrangement ‘in a thimble’, which was exquisite. Also on display were over 80 photos and various notebooks, stretching back over 50 years. These included Minute books (1966 to 1995), past show programmes (the oldest being 1962), exhibitor ledgers from the 1950’s (one noted that on August 22nd 1959, 260 entries had been received) and even a site plan of the 1994 show, showing a circular 40m show ring! The Gardening Club’s show used to be a much bigger affair. Originally an outside event, it has been held at Lower Moorend Farm and latterly at

Clay Farm up until 2000. But then, due to foot and mouth, the show moved off the land and into the Victory Hall for 2001. At the last outdoor show, Mike George from BBC Hereford & Worcester opened the event, there was a Gymkhana, vintage rally, baby show, archery, owl and polecat show, novelty dog show and bouncy castle, all showing how much bigger it used to be. The 1962 programme listed a children’s gymkhana, a clay pigeon shoot, grass track racing by Kinver Auto Club, bowling for a pig, and a treasure hunt, followed in the evening by a dance in Clows Top Hall, during which there would be a ‘Twisting Contest’! Today it is still a big undertaking to make the show happen, with a lot of organising to be done. Having a go at your local show encourages organisers no end, as does any offer of help - so why not get involved next year?

Ludlow Hunt Horse and Dog Show This annual show is a treat for those who enjoy a day of equine and canine activity. We visited mid-morning, when things were well under way at Hillocks Farm equestrian centre. There were many classes and a number of rings but a clear and measured commentary by Bill Andrewes made it easy to keep abreast of the action and focus attention on the appropriate ring. Elsewhere, you could find lots of preowned riding kit laid out for browsing and the Ludlow & District RDA had a fund-raising stall. Sue Brown from Cleobury Chiropractic and Liz Troman were offering free back checks for horse and rider on the day and Hopton Rehab & Homing Centre had an information display. Scheduled afternoon activities included a Fancy Dress class and the Dressage classes along with a Terrier, Lurcher and Family dog show. There was a very friendly atmosphere and with the perfect weather giving clear views of Titterstone Clee, and with refreshments from the Ludlow Hunt pop-up ‘tea shop’, a lovely relaxing day could have been spent here.

On the first Saturday of August, Tenbury hosted another very enjoyable show, thanks to the good efforts of the Tenbury Agricultural Society and its many members and friends. Show day started breezy and bright but there were ominous black clouds looming. Sure enough, in the middle of the morning the clouds broke with accompanying rolls of thunder and with rain sheeting down. There was enough cover for people to be able to find some sort of shelter and the downpour was as short-lived as it was heavy, so it soon passed. Sadly, it was enough to put some potential show-goers off making the trip to the Show. Despite the rain, the stock judging carried on regardless, as did the tugs of war, so a few people did get an early bath! A similar downpour in the middle of the afternoon also did its best to dampen proceedings but by then the Show was in

full swing and the people who were there simply sat it out until that rainstorm also blew over. As is often the case at the Tenbury Show, the weather just got better and better as the afternoon went on, and by the time people were packing up at the end of the day it had turned into a gloriously sunny evening. Yet again, the Agricultural Society did Tenbury proud, by putting together a great family day out, which thousands of people were lucky enough to enjoy. Here are a few pictures, from the hundreds we took, to remind you of the day if you were there, or alternatively to try and give you a flavour of what you missed, if you didn’t get to the Show yourself.

Every August, Little Hereford Fete takes place in the grounds of Easton Court and the wonderful setting makes for a delightful afternoon of fundraising. The fete opened at 2pm but even before then people had made their way to the venue, paid the £1 admission (for adults, for a Lucky Programme) and were queuing to get into the courtyard where the mammoth bric-a-brac stall was laid out, waiting to be snapped up by eager bargain hunters! Plants, books, home produce stalls and an impressive tombola added interest and the cake stall sold out quickly. The weather was perfect with sunshine, a few clouds and a nice breeze. Tenbury Town Band opened the afternoon then, after a break, rounded off the afternoon with a swing/rock & roll set, starting and closing with Glenn

Miller’s In the Mood and including Rock around the Clock, Shake Rattle & Roll, I’m all Shook up and Let’s go to the Hop. The fun dog show was as popular as ever and elsewhere you could try to guess the name of the sheep, Panda being the answer! Trevor Hill brought his BIG birds of prey for the display and, apart from a short delay while one decided to sit in a tree away from the ring, it was interesting to get close to these magnificent birds and learn more about them from Trevor’s excellent commentary. Eva Thomas, one of the organisers, commented that about £4,600 was raised on the day, slightly up on last year, and she thanked everyone for their support whether they attended, manned stalls or provided items for sale.

Pudleston Flower Festival Flower arrangements and the rhythm of swing filled Pudleston Church over the weekend of 12/13 August as the Flower Festival unfolded. This year the theme was Glenn Miller, the American Big Band leader, musician, composer and arranger. His record-breaking recording ‘Tuxedo Junction’ sold 115,000 copies in the first week and we were told that he was the bestselling recording artist from 1939 to 1943. Pennsylvania 65000, American Patrol, String of Pearls, Moonlight Cocktail, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Don’t Sit under the Apple Tree, On a Little Street in Singapore, Indian Summer, Bugle Call Rag, Stairway to the Stars, Moonlight Serenade and more were represented by arrangements. For the more cryptic minded, the visual clues of a melon, a cauli(flower) and a ‘baby’ alongside a flower arrangement indicated the song ‘Melancholy Baby’!

There also was a report of a variety concert held at the Regal in Tenbury Wells, raising money for the local Red Cross and RAF Pilots’ & Crews’ Fund. This featured, among others: the St Michaels’ Singers (a trio); a ballet by Miss Muriel Ferris; and a duet by Mrs E E Smith and Miss M Banfield.

Little Brown Jug Knitting in Britain had a high point during the 1940’s as part of The Home Front’s war effort and a communal knit at the Festival allowed people to knit a few rows, or even a whole square, to help create a blanket for the church. A produce stall tempted visitors with coconut and cherry cookies at 50p for a bag, a plate of cranberry, orange and raisin flapjack (£1.50), homemade redcurrant and blackcurrant jellies, as well as cucumbers, courgettes and strawberries. A raffle, bottle tombola, various craft stalls, fresh flowers and numerous classic vehicles could all be found in the churchyard. Visitors who decided to linger for an hour or two were amply catered for with options including quiche and salad (£2), strawberries, meringues and cream (£2.50), plus sandwiches, tiffin brownies and a selection of tray bakes.

I’ve got a Gal in Kalamazoo Tenbury’s excellent RBL choir sang two medleys of songs on the Saturday morning, many with a wartime theme, and you could purchase a copy of their latest CD. The church porch was turned into an Anderson Shelter (named after Sir John Anderson, Home Secretary in 1938) with information about wartime in the area, including the visit of the Princess Royal to Kyre Park Auxiliary Hospital, and a report on Pudleston Court being used as a Red Cross convalescent home for members of the armed forces.

TEME VALLEY TIMES Orleton and District Gardening Club holds their Annual Show each August in the village hall and this year’s was their 37th. Being a gardening club’s show you might expect it to be full of pot plants, cut flowers, floral art and vegetables - but in fact there are many more classes, including cookery and preserves. For example; ‘Gluten-free banana bread’ won by Gill Macefield with the comment ‘Superb! Fruit evenly distributed’; ‘Jar of fruit jelly’, won by Trisha Clanzy-Hodge with her crab apple ‘Pink Glow’ jelly; and

‘Courgette frittata’, won by Avril Blanchet. It would have been interesting to sample the prize-winning ‘jar of fruit jam’ as ‘Gooseberry and Fennel’ sounded intriguing! In the handicraft section there were classes for ‘A doll’s outfit’ (won by Linda Nash) and ‘A nightdress case’ (won by Diane Howell Thomas) so even if you don’t have green fingers, you could still give it a go! This was a lovely display, with the floral art and cut flower sections looking particularly wonderful. Well worth a visit.

Orleton Gardening Show Oliver! Re-Upholstery & Repair Service

July 29th saw what might best be described as a full house at the Regal for the opening night of Oliver! However, July 29th was also the 80th Birthday of The Regal, which opened to the public, as a cinema, in 1937, so there were two reasons for celebration! This high-energy performance was full of enthusiasm, and this enthusiasm was heartily reciprocated by the audience, as was demonstrated by the applause that followed each of the musical numbers. Oliver! was the first musical adaptation of a Dickens novel to become a success. It was written by Lionel Bart and first opened in 1960, with the cast including Barry Humphries (of Dame Edna Everage fame) and Tony Robinson, well-known for his role as Baldrick in Blackadder.

KingsFest 2017

On August 19th, the Kings Head in Tenbury Wells completed another successful fundraising event of live music, this time in aid of Tenbury Transport Trust. While we were there, Speed Gums were followed by Reverend Ferriday on the outdoor stage, then it was time for one of the highlights of the afternoon: Ichabod Steam’s ‘submarine’, crewed by his animatronic robot band. Billed as a ‘steampunk musical submarine adventure with mermaids, pirates and treasure!!!’, this was a theatrical performance punctuated

with songs that transported the audience to the bottom of the sea and back. ‘Ichabod’ endeavoured to save the day by securing the release of the beautiful mermaid (who had been kidnapped by the pirate) in exchange for treasure. Great fun, great songs and a great visual experience. Debbie, from the Kings Head, told us “Styles covered every musical style from slide blues, to orchestral ukelele, jazz, rock and funk. Audiences loved it and we raised over £200 from donations and raffle prizes.”

Honda revealed the all-new Civic Type R at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Sharing the same fundamentals as the new Civic, the Type R has a turbocharged two-litre VTEC engine, which produces 320PS, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. Driving modes include a new ‘Comfort’ setting, as well as ‘Sport’ and track-focused ‘+R’ modes, each of which tailors the adaptive dampers, steering force and throttle response to suit. Built in the UK at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon, the Type R will be exported across Europe and to other markets around the world, including Japan and the USA.

Claret Red leather is optional on the ASX 5 The revised ASX arrived in Britain's Mitsubishi showrooms late last year, with the most obvious difference being the restyled front end. There's a choice of two wheel drive or four wheel drive, and of manual or automatic transmission, and there's also a useful range of engines. However, only certain permutations are offered so the choices are: a 117hp 1.6-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual gearbox and front wheel drive; a 114hp 1.6-litre diesel with a six-speed manual gearbox (front-wheel drive on ASX 3, but fourwheel drive on ASX 4); and a 150hp 2.2-litre diesel, with six-speed automatic transmission and fourwheel drive. Even the entry-level petrol-only ASX 2 offers a useful specification, including air conditioning, 16inch alloys, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a USB port with iPhone compatibility, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, electric windows all round, rear privacy glass, and arm rests - front and rear. Safety equipment includes Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and seven airbags. Next up is the ASX 3, with automatic climate control, 18-inch alloys, cruise control, xenon superHID ‘wide vision’ headlamps with washers, DAB radio, Bluetooth music streaming, heated front seats and a reversing camera. The diesel-only ASX 4 has four-wheel drive, leather upholstery, black roof rails, satellite navigation and a CD player, while at the top of the range, the ASX 5

has leather seats in a choice of colours: Claret Red, Porcelain Cream or Gunmetal Grey, plus heated rear (as well as front) seats, a power-adjusted driver’s seat and LED interior lighting. We drove a top-spec model, a 2.2 4WD automatic, which we found to be a very practical car. Easy to drive, easy to steer and easy to park, it also provided a good feeling of space in the front and in the back. The useful-size boot is a welcome feature and ride comfort scored quite well, with the suspension being set up to provide a sufficiently compliant ride, but without introducing excessive roll. Four wheel drive is obviously useful off road, but it also plays a role in enhancing stability, particularly when accelerating hard. The automatic box did a respectable job and as paddle shifters are provided, it's easy to manage the gearchanges yourself, should you wish. Where size is concerned, the ASX is a little smaller than Nissan's big-selling Qashqai, but Mitsubishi's prices are substantially lower, starting at £16,255 for an entry-level ASX, compared to the Qashqai's starting price of £19,295. Looking at the top end of the range, a four-wheel-drive ASX 5, with a 2.2-litre diesel engine and automatic transmission, comes in at £28,905, while a two-wheel-drive 1.6-litre Qashqai Tecna+ automatic has a list price of £32,280. In addition, the ASX has a five year warranty, which is bound to help reassure prospective buyers.

DS 4 Crossback Terre Rouge The Terre Rouge is a limited edition model that sits at the top of the DS 4 range. Unsurprisingly it uses the DS 4's most powerful engine, a two-litre diesel with a claimed 180hp. Mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox - there is no manual version - this delivers considerable performance (0-60 in 8.6 seconds) while providing a relaxed feel. One feature that helps this model stand out is the 'Tourmaline Orange' paintwork, quite appropriate for a model that's known as a Terre Rouge (“red earth”). It's not the colour that particularly catches the eye, it's the fact that it's matt-finished rather than the usual gloss. You'd expect a range-topping model to be well-equipped

and the Terre Rouge doesn't disappoint. The perforated leather upholstery looks good and gives better breathability than unperforated leather; this can increase comfort on hot days. The front seats are heated, they have adjustable lumber support, and they also have a built-in massage function, which some may find helpful on longer runs. Other features include keyless entry and push button start, which is always convenient. The Crossback version has a higher ride height than a standard DS 4, so it combines the driving position of a crossover with an almost semi-coupé appearance, the latter being bolstered by the way the rear door handles blend into the car. Drawbacks of the body shape include something of a restriction in terms of headroom in the rear seats.

100 Years Apart

The driving position won't suit everyone, if only because the rather large steering wheel offers only a limited range of adjustment, but this is something you could easily assess on a test drive. The rear pillars are bulky, which limits the view out at certain angles, and during a brief acquaintance it would be easy to miss the fact that the rear windows don't open at all, which some passengers might dislike. Carrying large objects is made a little awkward by the way the rear seats fold. The backs simply fold down onto the squabs, leaving you with a two-level load platform, potentially less convenient than the flat or nearly flat platform that many alternatives offer. Looking at the positives, this is a comfortable car (if you can get on with the steering wheel), it's quieter than many, and the combination of the torquey two-litre diesel and its responsive auto gearbox makes it a relaxing option for longer trips, at least in the front. The Terre Rouge is undoubtedly a pleasantenough car, but the price tag of £30,205 might sound over-ambitious. However, it's hard to find another model that

The Model TT van was longer and stronger than the Model T car, had a cab that could seat one driver and one passenger, and for a smoother ride customers could specify pneumatic rear tyres rather than solid rubber! Ford has maintained market leadership in the commercial vehicle sector in the UK since the Transit was introduced in 1965. Transit sales passed the first million milestone in 1976 and passed subsequent million marks in 1985, 1994, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2013. This year, Ford is launching 20 new plug-in hybrid ('PHEV') Transit Custom vans on a 12-month trial in and around London. Among those taking part are the Metropolitan Police and British Gas. This will allow both Ford and the City of London to explore how electrified vans can contribute to cleaner air targets. The Transit Custom PHEV van is planned for commercial introduction in 2019 as part of Ford’s planned $4.5billion investment in electrified vehicles by 2020.

offers a directly-comparable specification, so it might be a question of how keen you are on what the Crossback offers. Where running costs are concerned, we found that fuel consumption ranged from about 41mpg during local use, up to a creditable 53mpg during careful driving on a run. Taken overall, this is a model that will appeal to buyers who are looking for something different, and who are prepared to pay a little more for exclusivity, particularly given that only 20 examples of the Terre Rouge are scheduled to be imported to the UK. However, the price does mean that those who are simply in the market for practical transport will probably be inclined to look elsewhere.
