Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Jaguar’s XK cars and engines this festival is to be held at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June. Fabulous cars, demonstration runs, cavalcades, and a competitive hillclimb are promised, along with distinguished guests, including Pat Appleyard, the daughter of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons.

Pat famously rallied a white Jaguar XK120 in partnership with her then-husband, Ian Appleyard and together they won Alpine Cups in 1950, ’51 and ’52.

Also on the guest list are Edd China, presenter of Discovery Channel’s TV programme Wheeler Dealers; Sir John Egan, who as chief executive from 1980 to 1990 turned a loss-making and imperilled part of BL Cars into a profitable independent company; Richard Attwood, one of Britain’s Le Mans 24 Hours winners, albeit at the wheel of a German car - the Porsche 917K. Further ‘names’ include Keith Helfet who as Jaguar’s Chief Stylist was responsible for the XJ220 supercar, XK180 concept car, and 1990s F-type concept; Willie Green, whose talent as a driver kept him at the pinnacle of historic racing for three decades.

New Mayor For Tenbury Tenbury’s new Mayor is Cllr. Sue Perry (seen in the photo) and the new deputy Mayor is Cllr. Eric Hudson.

Cllr. Perry said “It is an honour to be elected as your Mayor for the forthcoming year. I was born in Tenbury 58 years ago and believe we have a good community and I am looking forward to working together for the benefit of our town. My chosen charity for 2018/19 is the ‘Youth of Tenbury’.”

Lightning Seeds

Tenbury’s music festival is to be held on June 30th. Festival Director Graham James said “We know that the Lightning Seeds are really looking forward to the festival and bringing their loyal fans with them - this is a great opportunity for Tenbury to extend a warm welcome to visitors and we hope that accommodation providers and local shops will really benefit.”

Festival Chair David Burton added “We are hoping that the local community will buy their lower price tickets in advance at Tenbury TIC to avoid queues on the day and to arrive early to enjoy some of the fabulous local talent.

Disney characters in Tenbury

Free Property Marking West Mercia Police advise that security marking property increases the chance of getting it back if it is lost or stolen.

Safer Neighbourhood teams have recently held propertymarking events to help people keep their property safe and secure.

Residents could take along items such as lawnmowers, chainsaws and bicycles and have them security marked free of charge. One session took place at Clee Hill Village Hall.

Another, pictured here, was at Hanley Village Hall, where Community Support Officers Vanessa Snape and Theresa Howells marked up various items of garden equipment.

A weird and wonderful collection of Disney characters could be seen in Burford and Tenbury on May 6th, as part of a fundraising effort for The Brain Tumour Charity.

Buzz Lightyear, Ariel from the Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Snow White, Mary Poppins and Sweep, Peter Pan, Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse, Tinkerbell, Fozzie Bear, Eeyore, Winnie the Pooh, Mrs Potato Head, Woody, Princess Moana, Pinnochio, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Maleficent, Cruella and many more gathered at the Rose and Crown in Burford, the start of the event.

It was great fun and a wonderful spectacle and the gloriously hot sunshine certainly warmed up any participants who had chosen a onesie costume!

The Brain Tumour Charity is a UK-based charity and it’s the leading funder of research into brain tumours, spending 80p of every £1 donated on their charitable aims. They raise awareness of tumours, aim to reduce diagnosis times, and provide support and information for patients, families and friends.

Tree marks WI Milestone

As part of the Centenary celebrations of the Worcestershire Federation of Women’s Institutes the members of Tenbury WI decided to commemorate the milestone by the planting of a tree, a Prunus ‘Frilly Frock’ to be precise!

The prunus is described as ‘a magical little weeping tree with three outstanding features: profuse early spring white delicate flowers; summer foliage has light and dark green variegation; foliage turns to multitoned red and orange in autumn’.

The WI has a small garden in Tenbury and it was decided to plant the tree there. Local tree grower Frank P Matthews donated the tree, stake, tree guard and compost, and provided a skilled member of their workforce to plant it. Expertly done, this only seemed to take about 10 minutes!

Tenbury WI President Primrose Wallace and other members watched as their garden received the new addition. The

Kimbolton Plant Sale The damp start to the day didn’t deter early buyers at Kimbolton Church’s plant sale on May 26th.

There was a great variety of interesting plants laid out and trays, boxes and bags of new stock seemed to arrive almost as often as trays of purchases left!

Many keen gardeners kept a careful eye on the new arrivals just in case something took their fancy. Colourful aquilegia ‘Mrs Scott Elliott’, grape hyacinths, alliums, purple gromwell, lily of the valley, huge hostas, dark pink and dark red hellebores, evergreen Teucrium, hardy (single pink) chrysanthemums, solomon’s seal, and

astrantia ‘Roma’ were some of the plants on offer. For the foodiegardener there were celery, red cabbage, rhubarb, sweet corn and strawberry plants and a good selection of herbs.

Bockleton Fete

Worcestershire Federation was formed in 1918 - one of the first six federations to be formed. It has over 130 WIs with a membership of around 4,000.

Lightning, loud thunderclaps and intermittent heavy downpours almost drowned the opening of Bockleton Fete at 2pm on May 27th.

But despite the unfavourable conditions, Tenbury Town Band started up bang on time to open the event and everyone carried on as best they could - dodging from stall to covered-stall as breaks in the rain permitted!

At least the church provided a dry sanctuary, where you could partake of drinks, cakes and sandwiches.

Some youngsters still wanted to enjoy ice creams outside, so with waterproofs on and hoods up, ice creams were joyously consumed!

It was lovely weather for ‘hooking-ducks’ - to slightly misquote - and the golf putting challenge had a generous basket of fruit for the highest score of the day.

A coconut shy, Chris’s silver and grey bargains, a white elephant stall, exquisite wood-turned craft, raffle, cakes, plants, rhubarb, ‘Guess the weight of Billy Barr the sheep’, and face painting all helped provide interest, as did the silent auction, with some unusual lots, including a ‘sixth month supply of meringues’, a ‘mole infestation control visit’ and a ‘family 2-bedroomed tent’!

Harry and Meghan’s Wedding A number of celebrations took place around the Teme Valley to mark the Royal Wedding on May 19th. Clifton held a Big Breakfast followed by an afternoon tea. The Shelsleys held a royal wedding big screen tea party. Bromyard’s Conquest Theatre opened its doors for a free live screening.

Lower Sapey church held a Royal tea party.

We popped along to Lindridge Parish Hall where local families and regulars at Eardiston Country Club joined forces to celebrate the wedding with a community party. Food and drink, music and games including pass-the-parcel for the youngsters, were all laid on.

You could spend some time browsing, then enjoy tea and cake in the rather wonderful pop-up tea shop that had been created in the chancel of the church.

‘Chat and Chapters’ printed menus, beautifully laid tables with tablecloths, fresh flower arrangements and a book on each table made visitors welcome and the splendid array of cakes tempted many to indulge.

Various teas were available, including red bush, green, English Breakfast, mint, lemon, Earl Grey and

chamomile, and there was a choice of milk or soya.

Excellent waitress service meant your needs were wellcatered for and attention to detail Part of the Little Hereford even included a Art Group display hand-written bill!

As well as the books there was a mini photographic and art exhibition. Little Hereford Art Group had a Lesley Connolly display, as did the Friends of the Leominster Canal, demonstrating her art and there was an art demonstration by Lesley Connolly, plus a choir performance, later in the day.

All in all a surprising and fun event, helping raise funds for Little Hereford Church.

Hatters at Leysters!

Hope Bagot Fete Despite a tremendous overnight storm with thunder and lightning, Hope Bagot Fete, on May 27th, managed to escape the worst of the weather and ‘a bit damp’ gave way to ‘almost sunny’ as the afternoon progressed.

Fete-goers could enjoy the Teme Valley Band, plant stall, raffle, cream teas for £2.50, coconut shy, book stall, pre-loved clothes and designer labels and a bottle tombola amongst other activities.

Raffle prizes included two cinema tickets at the Regal in Tenbury, a basket of fruit from Barn Farm Shop in Tenbury and a Sunday lunch for two at The Church Inn, Ludlow. You could also

There was a display highlighting the fact that Hope Bagot village hall needs a bit of TLC and asking ‘can you help in any way?’ Funds were being raised on the day to help.

There was a delightful stall selling, for one day only, ‘The Hope Bagot Biscuit Fairies’ wonderful range of freshly-made biscuits, from coconut Robots and Anzac biscuits, to chocolate-covered cow-shape, or lemon-flavour lizard-shape, biscuits at £1 a bag.

This was a lovely event and well worth the gentle meander up to Hope Bagot, especially when so many had ‘Kept calm and carried on’, setting up and arranging the stalls and activities despite the weather forecast.

As the organisers said, ‘A good day despite the bloomin’ rain!’ Our capricious weather has been disrupting events and it seems entirely arbitrary as to who gets the good weather and who doesn’t. But at least at this plant fair your green-leaved purchases would have been gently pre-watered!

This fair is a fundraiser to help the team of volunteers deck out the town with blooms in readiness for the arrival of the ‘In Bloom’ judges in July. This year there were a few more craft and gift stalls, adding variety, and on the ‘Leominster In Bloom’ stall children could plant up a sunflower seed in a pot to take home.

Plants galore including annuals, perennials, bedding, shrubs, acers and planted-up hanging baskets were on display on The Grange, with prices starting at 50p for a small plant. Well worth a visit!

New SPAR Manager

Ben Marshall is the new manager at Tenbury SPAR. Recently Ben has been working at SPAR stores in the Worcester area, but prior to that he worked at Tenbury SPAR, and he told us how much he is looking forward to working in this area again.

Ben has been appointed following the departure of Dave Powell, who had been at the store for over 30 years so was a very well-known face in Tenbury.

Contemporary Craft Show 'Showing O' is the title of the Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft's spring exhibition. As the name suggests, it shows o designers' creative talents. Held in the Beacon Rooms at Ludlow Castle - and with free admission - this was an opportunity to see a very high standard of craft in a range of disciplines including jewellery, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and furniture.

The original works range from the highly decorative to the reassuringly functional, making this exhibition a potential treasure trove for those looking for an unusual gift or a special piece for the home. The pictures provide a taste of what could be seen.

This Town Criers Competition is one of Bromyard’s many festivals. Held in and around the Public Hall, on a day when the sun actually shone, the assembled criers and their consorts looked dazzling in their outfits.

The job of the crier, in this competition, was to extol the virtues of the settlement they represented. Each had their own distinct way of beginning, particularly how they rang their bell and how they oyezed!

Llandrindod Wells’ crier started appropriately with ‘Bore da!’; Illfracombe’s urged us to take a seagull home when we visited; Cromer’s announced, to much merriment, that you could ‘come to Cromer and catch crabs’; and Owen Collier, Royal Wootton Bassett’s crier, made a very poignant speech.

Criers also came from Helmsley, Bromsgrove and Frome. Each performance ended with the declaration ‘God save the Queen’ and the response ‘The Queen’. This good-humoured event, sponsored by the DRM Bus Company, managed to be both educational and entertaining - a commendable achievement!

Smarty Pants & accessories

Nash photo exhibition Tenbury Photographic Club staged a wonderfully diverse exhibition of members’ photos in Nash and Boraston Village Hall on 5th May. With free entry and over 200 photos on display, the exhibition buzzed with enthusiasm for photography!

Throughout the day people were busy chatting as well as looking at, discussing and being inspired by the photos. Excellent refreshments were on tap all day and there was a small tombola to help with fundraising for the village hall. One photographer interspersed his photos with numerous famous photographers quotes such as Henri Cartier-Bresson’s ‘Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst’.

The Tenbury Photographic Club is relatively new, having been tentatively started by Simon Lusty in 2017. It meets every other Wednesday in Tenbury in the Regal function room off Church Walk and new members are welcome.

The club enjoys an ethos of learning and sharing knowledge, along with what some members describe as ‘a welcome absence of competitions’!

Gardening Club Plant Sale Fast and frantic purchasing of plants took place as keen gardeners snapped up the bargains at Orleton Village Hall when Orleton & District Gardening Club’s plant sale got underway.

A simple pricing structure helped; small plants 2 for £1, medium £1.50 and large £3! Plants on offer included apricot and white foxgloves, salvia seascape, cala lilies, rudbekias, dhalias, white lupin, zinnia purple prince, sunflowers, hostas, cucumber, aubergine, mixed cabbage, three varieties of squash, at least 10 varieties of tomato plants and much more a great selection!

Geraniums appeared the hottest sellers with vegetable plants running a close second. It took little more than half an hour for some of the tables to start looking seriously denuded as gardeners were leaving with their arms laden with bags or trays of plants.

A splendid range of cakes and scones was also on offer at very modest prices, helping provide a relaxing break before planting the new purchases!

Lucton Food Festival

After being a victim of the snow in March, the rescheduled Lucton Food Festival went ahead on April 28th. The good mix of regular and new exhibitors meant the festival didn't disappoint and this year there was, once again, much to discover.

Tasting was the order of the day. You could start with seven flavours of pork scratchings (salt & black pepper, salt & vinegar, chorizo, hot chilli, scorching hot, garlic, plain) or with a Pimento soft drink, combining natural flavours of ginger, chilli pepper, gentian, lime, bitter orange and oregano, and marketed as being suitable for coeliacs, vegans and vegetarians.

Some might argue that the mouth-watering Agen prunes, filled and dipped in chocolate, were the most luxurious offerings to be savoured. The choice of fillings included coconut ganache, orange or ginger marzipan, Baileys ganache, lemon curd ganache, and liquorice & aniseed ganache.

Or you could try Britanny toffee bread or Brioche Nanterre or Thai-style pickled onions, or you could buy gluten-free Lincolnshire sausages. The choice was huge!

If you felt like a spot of lunch a 'Lucton Special' pizza with Brie, caramelised red onion and rocket could be freshly cooked for you in a clay oven, or you could try a Mexican Quesadilla with peppers, cheese, guacamole and a sweet chilli sauce.

Non-foodie stalls included The Woodland Trust and the Leominster Air Cadets.

A raffle (tickets £1) had stunning prizes including: a Tiger Helicopters trial lesson; an Eckington Manor demonstration voucher for two; Hobson's Brewery tour, tasting and lunch for 4; a £60 meal voucher for The Riverside at Aymestrey; and three hours of riding lessons at Lucton Equestrian Centre, so some lucky visitors went home with something unexpected to look forward to!

This growing food festival is certainly worth a visit, and the free entry might have been particularly encouraging to people who don't normally visit food festivals.

Ludlow Spring Festival Held in Ludlow Castle over the weekend of May 12th, this event was mainly about beer, cider, cars, food and music.

On the Friday evening, acclaimed beer writer Susanna Forbes took beer-lovers on a tasting tour of some of the winners in the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) regional Best Beer Awards. Not just tasting the beers, but meeting the brewers and food-matching as well, with foods chosen to highlight elements of the beer's ďŹ&#x201A;avour.

With about 180 beers to choose from, eventgoers could study the listings in the programme then make their way to the beers they particularly wanted to try. Others were more random in their choices, but a taste was available to help you decide.

North Cotswold Brewery had a delicious Monarch Millenium at 8.8%, sweet, smooth and full-bodied, while Heavy Industry Brewing must surely get the prize for the most inventive names for their exhibited beers with names including 'Eurotrash', 'Dr Jekyll's Last Waltz' and 'Pigeon Toed Orange Peel'.

The range and quality of beers was testament to the passion, imagination and skills of independent brewers. You really were spoilt for choice.

On Saturday and Sunday you could feast your eyes on the gleaming bodywork of a range of classic vehicles. The 1939 Chevrolet Businessman's Coupe looked stunning while a 1985 Ford Granada Estate brought back memories.

You could also have a veritable feast of food with a wide range of tastes being catered for: Indian street food, Burritos, vegetarian, African Caribbean, noodles, pastas, Spanish street food, organic non-dairy/gluten/soya chocolates and truďŹ&#x201E;es from Gorge, and with juicy, sweet and crunchy purple salad asparagus from R T Lee & Son! If all this wasn't enough, you could venture out of the castle into the town for the Pie Trail on Saturday and the Pudding Trail on Sunday.

The festival organisers congratulated Gary and Karl at the Rose & Crown, who won both Trails (Pie and Pudding!), runner-ups being The Bridgnorth Pie Company with their traditional pork pie, and Parkway with their 'crema catalana' pudding.

Tasting, talking and ďŹ nding so much to discover made for another great Spring Festival - to experience everything you would have needed to be there for the whole weekend!

Titterstone Clee History Alf Jenkins was born on Titterstone Clee Hills in the 1930s. He has participated in dialect programmes at Pebble Mill BBC Birmingham and Shropshire Radio, Hereford & Worcester Radio and National Archive sessions in London.

Alf was eventually persuaded by Fred Reeves, his former History Master at Ludlow Grammar, and an eminent historian, to think about publishing a book. Promoting his research by giving talks to clubs and societies, Alf soon had around 350 people who advance-subscribed for a book.

This enabled a deposit of £3,500 to be made available for Orphans Press to print the first edition of ‘Titterstone Clee Hills, Everyday Life, Industrial History and Dialect’.

The delivery of books arrived just before Christmas 1983. Two weeks later every copy had been sold.

Stanton Stevens of Ludlow’s Castle Bookshop said “Our bookshop has carried stocks of their book ever since it was first published in 1983 and it is now in its 6th edition. It has remained one of our best sellers over 35 years and remains the single most important book in print ever produced about Titterstone Clee Hills.”

Rededication

by Bishop This long-awaited event really was a case of ‘third time lucky’! We are grateful to Peter Stanley for the following words.

“On the 20th May, in glorious weather, Dr John Inge, Bishop of Worcester, rededicated St Bartholomew’s Church in Bayton. This was after heavy snow in December and in March caused two cancellations.

A £250,000 Heritage Lottery grant, together with other smaller grants and donations, means that Bayton Church now has a new roof, nave and vestry floor (with under floor heating pipes), kitchen and toilet. The entire interior has been repainted and new drains installed to help cure the chronic damp problem. The response to the changes has been overwhelmingly favourable, although replacing some pews with chairs has not been universally popular. The church was closed during the renovations from June 2016 till September 2017.

Congregation and community have already begun to benefit from the improved facilities and it is hoped that the building is now secure for the next generation and beyond.

Agatha Christie at Pudleston The rededication was well attended and the choir helped create a celebratory atmosphere with their singing of hymns and an anthem.

Dr Inge stressed how throughout history, humanity has valued special places and buildings and that they should be places from which good radiates and where peace and inspiration are found. This has been true in the past - we hope and pray this can be true in the future also.

During the service, Dr Inge presented Phillip Ward with a commemorative letter, to mark his 56 years of faithful service as organist at Bayton, Clows Top and other local churches.”

New SPAR Wines SPAR have introduced a new range of wines, exclusively available through SPAR. There are ten to choose from: five whites (Wildflower Pinot Grigio, Tino Pai Sauvignon Blanc, Jean-Marie Garnier Chardonnay, Brindle Ridge Chardonnay, Villa Cerro Garganega Pinot Grigio), four reds (Wildflower Pinot Noir, Brindle Ridge Merlot, Legendary Malbec, Fontaine du Sud Costieres de Nimes) and one rosé (Villa Cerro Garganega Pinot Grigio Blush).

Our favourites were the Jean-Marie Garnier Chardonnay (“elegantly creamy and fresh, with a lovely flavour”) and the Brindle Ridge Merlot (“juicy full-bodied red, bursting with dark fruit aromas, plums and raspberry”). Full price is £6.50 to £8 a bottle, but in early June an offer will see prices typically cut by £1. Availability varies from store to store.

Following the successes of previous years with themes such as Glenn Miller, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and James Bond, this year the Flower Festival at Pudleston Church will be focussing on the works of Agatha Christie.

The star guest will be Agatha Christie’s grandson, Mathew Prichard. The organisers contacted him to tell him of the plan and Mr. Prichard said how pleased he was, and that he was unaware of any other flower festival being held in honour of his grandmother. He has agreed to officially open the event on Saturday August 11th at 12 noon.

Visitors can expect to see about 23 wonderful floral displays, plus classic and vintage vehicles and a variety of stalls, and there will also be plenty of refreshments!

Tenbury Country Market

Many will remember when these markets were known as Women’s Institute markets or WI markets. The first WI market was started by Criccieth WI in 1916 but after the war it folded and it wasn’t until 1919 that a collaboration of a number of WI’s saw a market set up in Lewes, Sussex and so the pattern of WI’s having their own market grew. By 1992 the turnover of markets was £10 million.

As the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was a not-for-profit organisation a more arm’s-length approach saw

the markets separated from NFWI in 1995 and adopt a new name ‘WI Country Markets Ltd’. This organisation became self-financing in 2004 and the use of the WI initials was discontinued.

In Tenbury the market has continued throughout all these changes, changing its name as appropriate. It is held on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 12 noon in the Scout Hut, near the swimming pool. A good choice of cakes, scones, biscuits, savoury dishes, plants and craft items are available, as are refreshments, so you can do your shopping and then have a chat over a cuppa!

Godson Book Launch

Author David Godson outside Tenbury’s Pump Rooms The Godsons played a big part in Tenbury’s history, not least by bringing about its status as a Spa town. Many long-standing residents remember The Court, where various members of the Godson family lived. It used to stand between The Crow public house and Greenhill Close but was demolished in the 1960s However, the family have not broken their ties with Tenbury. Not only is there charitable activity, there is now the newly-published book on Richard Godson MP QC, the first Member of Parliament for the constituency of Kidderminster.

Written by David Godson, this was launched at the Pump Rooms on May 18th.

The book is substantial, extending to about 400 pages and, we were told, around 186,000 words. It took David around four and a half years to complete.

It is available to purchase from the TIC and Tenbury Museum and is likely to be of interest to all who would appreciate an insight into the Godson family in bygone times.

The launch event was a most enjoyable evening where local guests were able to enjoy David Godson’s and Raymond Godson’s raconteurial expertise. Both were informative and amusing.

Raymond’s grandfather was Septimus Holmes Godson, one of the promoters of the baths and Raymond recounted that as a youngster his father was forced to drink a pint of spa water every day. Later, having taken

Earlier this year the Leominster History Study Group (LHSG) held a book launch in the John Abel room at Grange Court to promote their latest, and probably their last, local history publication.

‘The Eagle Descends - Printing in Leominster’ tells the history of printing in the town.

Compiled by Arthur Davis, Ann Malpas and Tony Malpas, this 208 page hardback contains a wealth of detail about printing and about Leominster printers through the centuries, right up to the present day.

At the launch Rob Walker, Chairman of LHSG, welcomed everyone and then Mayor Cllr. Pendleton commended the book saying ‘it is an excellent piece of scholarship and research’. He went on to congratulate the authors and wish the book the very best of sales.

Tony Malpas, one of the co-authors, described how and why the book came into being. It all began eight years ago, when the LHSG decided to hold an evening of conversation with Arthur Davis, about his life in printing. Tony said ‘Everyone was enthralled with the detail Arthur gave and at the end of the evening we had only got to 1944 when he went in to the army!’

A second evening followed which saw Arthur continue his story including the formation, with his brother, of their own printing and publishing company (Davis Brothers). Concerns were expressed that this fascinating history should take a more permanent form.

Three reasons cemented the decision to publish. One was that Arthur’s lifespan from apprenticeship to retirement covered a period in which there was a revolution in printing; from hot metal to high tech. Second, Arthur’s apprenticeship was with Leominster

Printing Company - the publisher of what was probably the most successful local paper that Leominster has known.

Third was the fact that in the 1990s Davis Brothers merged with Orphans Press, a printing enterprise with a unique beginning. It was established in 1873 by a Quaker, Henry Stanley Newman, who had set up an orphanage in Leominster in 1867.

The Press employed boys from the home and enabled them to learn a worthwhile trade, while also generating income for the home.

For these reasons the study group considered the book to be a very worthwhile project. During the evening the authors gladly signed copies of the book which, most fittingly, was printed by Orphans Press.

The Mayor of Tenbury, Councillor Sue Perry, was then invited to officially ‘launch’ the book, which she did. Sue gave thanks for the work of the Godson Trust in Tenbury and she revealed that her mother and father had both worked at The Court.

David Godson’s other book ‘Courtoy’s Complaint’, based in 19th century London, tells the true story of the origins of the wealth given to Septimus Holmes Godson.

Cross Country It is always interesting to discover what is going on in our local area and what top class facilities we have on our own doorstep. An example of this is Sapey Cross Country course, near the small village of Wolferlow. Enjoying wonderful far reaching views across glorious countryside, the course itself also offers excellent viewing opportunities for spectators.

Established in 2002 by Alan and Audrey Thacker, Sapey XC hosts a number of equestrian events run by Pony Clubs, Riding Clubs and British Eventing and it has often welcomed competitors more usually seen at International competitions.

Based on permanent grassland the course offers a mixture of hills, natural hedges, a water complex and woodland. There is plenty of parking on site and spectators are able to view the action around the water complex from the comfort of a seated area, where they can buy locally produced food and refreshments.

For those who want to become more involved in the sport there is also opportunity for volunteers to help at Sapey events where they will find good company and entertainment all day. Their next events are on 3rd and 24th June so why not pop along?

Coreley Shop and Social A friendly welcome, a marvellous and generous cheese ploughman’s with all the trimmings of pickles, refreshments and numerous stalls made for a delightful evening at Coreley Memorial Hall.

You need a location that provides plenty of interest - and last, but by no means least, you also need to stay somewhere that ensures that your stay will be a pleasure. Which brings us to the Cotswold House Hotel in Chipping Campden.

Centrally located on the Square its quiet frontage belies the hidden treasures behind: extensive gardens; a Spa with a hydrotherapy pool, steam room and seven treatment rooms; rich architectural features; a wealth of places to sit and relax; 28 bedrooms and suites; Bistro casual dining or Fig Restaurant fine dining; a croquet lawn and drinks terrace - the list goes on. You can feel at ease the moment you step through its doors.

The excellent choice of cocktails could be perused before dining in the Bistro, where three courses can be taken for around £30. Dressing for dinner cements the sense of occasion in the Fig Restaurant (three courses for £48.50).

The asparagus and pheasant egg starter, followed by mains of pork tenderloin, celeriac puree, sprouting broccoli and golden beetroot, then a dessert of strawberry parfait, lemon sponge, limoncello and mint were all as expected. The port flight to finish was a very satisfying end to the meal.

Chipping Campden itself has much to offer with the achingly beautiful mellow stone street views and a calm ambience. An evening stroll around the streets can be soothing to the senses.

Guild of Handicraft carver Alec Miller (1879 - 1961) recalled such feelings when he first came to the town and walked up the High street: “I could not ‘read’ the history embodied in these stone-built houses, so rich, so substantial and of such beautiful stone. I simply walked on, in an ecstasy of pleasure with no thought but just wonder”.

Some Local Attractions Kiftsgate Court Barn Located on Church Street, a short walk from the hotel, this refurbished listed barn is a museum of Craft and Design and it’s home to The Guild of Handicraft Trust. The permanent exhibition ‘Nine Lives’ tells the story of nine individuals (artists, designers and craftspeople) who came to the Cotswolds, drawn by the beauty of the place. Some of them fell in love with, and settled in, Chipping Campden. The stories of their lives and skills, and the displays of examples of their work, are fascinating, but do be prepared to read and look to get the most from this small but unusual museum.

Magnificently situated with stunning views, this immaculately kept garden contains many unusual plants and shrubs including the stunning Kiftsgate rose, which at perhaps 50 feet high is thought to be the largest rose in England. Steep hillsides, level terraces and hidden surprises make it a ‘must see’. There is interest year round and when we visited paeonies were flowering abundantly. Steam Railway

We decided to board the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway at Toddington Station where there is free parking, a tea room and several rail carriages filled with ephemera from bygone days. It also has a loco yard viewing area, children’s play area, picnic area and a ‘havea-go’ mini signal box!

Purchasing a fun and educational ‘I-Spy’ book helps keep the young and the young-atheart occupied on the journey and may also help you to spot things you might otherwise have missed. This year the newly-built but authentic-looking station was opened at Broadway, creating a route of over 14 miles, with the other terminus at Cheltenham Race Course.

Mazda MX-5 1.5 Roadster It's fun to drive, it looks great and it's more comfortable than many would expect. Add in the affordability - you could easily spend more on a relatively mundane hatchback and it's no wonder that the MX-5 has been such a good seller.

Two engines are offered, 2-litre and 1.5-litre.

We tried the smaller version. This is about 30hp down on the 2-litre alternative, but with 131PS it's quick enough to propel the car from rest to 60mph in about eight seconds, approximately a second slower than its bigger brother.

Differences between the models involve not only the engine, as the larger-engined car comes with a limited slip differential and 17inch (rather than 16-inch) wheels. The 1.5 feels lighter and softer to drive, and arguably truer to the spirit of earlier MX-5s, but ultimately the choice between the two is up to the individual.

Many of today's roadsters feature a powered hood, so you can drop the top at the press of a button. This MX-5 eschews such fancification and relies on traditional manual labour. However, the design of the soft top is so good that in can be pulled into place more quickly than some motorised tops operate.

And obviously there's no motor, or even an operating mechanism, so there's a weight saving and a cost saving.

This is just one example of the MX-5's 'less is more' approach - as in less weight but more pleasure - and there's no doubt that Mazda have got this right, as this MX-5 is in the top drawer of cars that are fun to drive. It's a long way from being the fastest, but there's hardly

anything to touch it where fun versus cost is concerned.

There's the initial purchase price, and the MX5 1.5 roadster starts at less than £19,000 on the road. Day-to-day running costs should be modest as it's easy to average over 40mpg and over 50mpg is possible if you are able to restrain your exuberance. Insurance is group 26: to put this into perspective, that's roughly in the middle of Audi's A4 range, so hardly out of the way for a car that's so much fun.

Practicality depends on how you look at it.

Some aspects are impressively good, not least being the airflow - with the windows up, modest-size drivers and passengers don't suffer any buffeting at normal A-road speeds.

So even if you're off to the Welsh coast for the day you could leave the top down all the way there and back, if the weather stays dry.

It's also a lot warmer than you might expect.

We drove this car in March and driving with the top down was a pleasure, with the powerful heater keeping us cosy even where the road was no more than a Tarmac ribbon threading its way through snowdrifts.

Drawbacks include limited stowage space.

The boot isn't all that small, relative to the car's size, but there's hardly any space to store anything in the passenger compartment. And if you're particularly large yourself, you might find you simply don't fit, as the interior is very compact, with snug-fitting seats and with limited seat and steering adjustment.

But if an MX-5 does fit you, if you're looking for a soft-top two-seater, and if you want every trip to be a driving adventure, an MX-5 might be just the ticket.

Volvo V90

Buttons in boot remotely drop rear seats

Over the decades Volvo's large estates have earned themselves an enviable reputation for space, reliability and safety. Today's V90 retains all of these virtues while also offering the sort of style that buyers would look for in a modern executive estate.

The range of engines and the various trim levels means that the V90 range caters to a wide variety of tastes. Technically the most interesting model is the Twin Engine T8 as this combines a 320hp petrol engine with an 87hp electric motor to provide electrifying performance, but we aren't looking at this version here, neither are we looking at the Cross Country model.

The big decision is whether to go for petrol or diesel power. Ultimately it's partly down to personal taste but it's also influenced by what sort of driving you do. Lots of long runs might

point you towards a diesel, but petrol is increasingly popular with drivers who mainly do short journeys.

The engines are all two-litre four-cylinder units, all with automatic transmission. There are two diesels to choose from: 190hp D4 and 235hp D5. There's more difference between these than you might imagine as the D5 also features All Wheel Drive. Coupled to its significantly higher torque, this looks to be the one to go for if towing performance is important.

If you prefer petrol, you'll be looking at a T4, which is what we drove, or at the more powerful T5; the T5 offers 250hp, giving it significantly higher performance than the 190hp T4.

Whichever model you go for, a V90 is the sort of car that really feels at home on a long journey, whether on a good main road or a

motorway. Partly this is down to the easy way it covers the ground but partly it's because the car is so easy to drive under these conditions.

The eight-speed gearbox also plays a part, particularly when you're enjoying a relaxing drive on a decent 'A' or 'B' road, where many of the changes go unnoticed, creating a seamless power delivery. It would be easy to feel tempted to set off into the sunset one day, and find yourself at a destination you hadn't planned!

Looking at the V90's practical everyday qualities, there's obviously its spaciousness, including generous legroom in the back, and a decent amount of luggage capacity, even with the rear seats in use. If you need more space, the rear seats fold down quickly and easily, creating a load platform that's about two metres long, depending on the position of the front seats.

Where costs are concerned, the V90 is surprisingly competitive for what it offers. It's also impressive how comprehensive the specification is, even on the entry-level T4

Integral booster cushions for the rear seats Momentum, with a list price of £37,620 'on the road'. Even in this you benefit from the eightspeed gearbox, keyless start, LED headlights, leather-faced upholstery, heated seats, adaptive cruise control and a whole lot more.

Of course, if you move up the range the features become even more opulent, and your Volvo dealer would obviously be delighted to talk you through the options!

Citroen C3 Aircross

If you want a car that stands out from the crowd, but if at the same time you want a car that's compact, convenient and practical, you might well find the C3 Aircross an appealing concept. Described by Citroen as a “compact SUV”, it sits between a modest family hatchback and a small SUV. It looks fun and funky, but underneath the snazzy appearance it's actually a very sensible car, offering a range of modest engines as well as good ride comfort and a useful amount of interior space, despite its compact footprint.

The boxy shape makes the most of what space there is and the car's height not only helps create a spacious feel, it also provides a higher vantage point when you're driving. Initially the handling may seem to be a bit vague, but

that's largely because the suspension is softer than most of today's models, so you might need a bit of time to get used to it.

The car we drove had a 110hp turbocharged three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine. This pulled eagerly enough, particularly in terms of low to mid range performance, giving the car quite a lively feel. What is basically the same engine is also available in entry-level 82hp non-turbo form (considerably slower and with less torque) and there is also a 130hp version that can cover the 0-60mph sprint in just over 10 seconds - a second quicker than the 110hp model we tried.

The 130hp version comes with a six-speed gearbox but more modest models have only five gears. With five we sometimes felt that an

in-between gear would have been welcome, plus the five-speed box has a long movement and lacks a precise feel. Two 1.6-litre fourcylinder diesels are also available, a 100hp model (five-speed) and 120hp (six-speed).

Returning to the car's sensible side, the brakes are good and the suspension copes well with bumps. For its length (4.15m) it's got a respectable boot and the rear seats drop down easily, creating a very useable load platform for larger items. High-specification models have rear seats that slide fore and aft, with backs that have adjustable rake.

list price to £18,965. The contrasting white roof is a no-cost option. The two colours worked well together and the car attracted a lot of glances. Where running costs are concerned, we found it easy to average almost 50mpg, according to the car's computer, and there's a 20,000 mile service interval.

Other good features include the ease of getting in and out due to the seats being at a convenient height, but the tailgate had quite a heavy action. The Aircross could appeal to a wide range of buyers who are looking for a car of this size. The range starts with the 82hp 'Touch' at £14,350, or from £189 a month on personal lease.
