A forgotten piece of the history of Tenbury’s Pump Rooms has recently come to light. The Christmas issue of the Teme Valley Times included a feature on architect James Cranston’s 19th century work in Tenbury Wells, with particular reference to the Pump Rooms. Following the publication of this feature, an item that is believed to be a previously unknown part of the building’s original specification has been presented to Tenbury Museum. For more information, see page 3.

Pump Rooms Frieze discovered?
Bruce Osborne and Cora Weaver at Tenbury Wells Tourist Information Centre, presenting this link to the Pump Rooms’ past to David Patrick, representing Tenbury Wells Museum and History Group An article in the Christmas 2017 Teme Valley Times looked at architect James Cranston’s buildings in Tenbury Wells. This has brought to light, via ‘Spas, Wells and Springs’ experts Bruce Osborne and Cora Weaver, an artefact that has been in their care for a number of years. The newsletter of the ‘Friends of Malvern Springs and Wells & Malverns Worldwide’ tells us that “The article in the Teme Valley Times reminded us of a piece of thin metal that we had been given some time after the restoration. Apparently retrieved from the builders heap of rubbish [when the Pump Rooms were being restored in the late 20th century], it measures 33cms x 11.5cms. Most interestingly it is decorated with a pale blue design Does anyone remember seeing anything like this in the suggesting it was a frieze or similar. Pump Rooms? Although seriously corroded, the decoration is still discernable as can be seen from the illustration.” Bruce commented that ‘the design has been dated at 1860’ and after looking round the Pump Rooms and postulating where the frieze would fit, Cora added that ‘this is a remarkable building, with so many original features, including relief-patterned finger plates that bear some similarity to the frieze design.’ However, the mystery still remains as to where this piece of metalwork was originally located. It might be the last remaining piece of some long-forgotten original interior décor, or it might be something that was still in place after World War Two, when the building was used by the WI Market. Do any of our older readers have any recollections that might help?

No Velo in 2018
The 2017 Birmingham Velo cycling event attracted a lot of criticism from people who live or work in the rural parts of Worcestershire through which it travelled. Issues included poor consultation, the closure of key routes, inadequate and/or misleading signage, some businesses having to close and some people found it impractical to get out of their house by car. The organisers have stated that there will not be a Birmingham Velo event this year and they said that they are “developing a brand new route” for the next Birmingham Velo event, scheduled for Spring 2019.

Medieval Pageant Lord and Lady Say invite the good people of the Teme Valley and all surrounding areas to the Leominster Medieval Pageant, to be held on Saturday 24th March in and around the Priory Church. Entry is, once again, free to all. Special guest John Challis (Boycie), star of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ and ‘The Green Green Grass’ has been invited to open the event. As well as his distinguished acting career, John has a particular interest in the medieval history of the Marches. This year’s theme is the 12th to 15th century Grail Romances and the Knights of the Round Table. As well as displays, music and dance there will be a tournament and skirmish. The event will also feature its traditional large craft and artisan market which will be held undercover in the church. Refreshments and light meals will be available throughout the day. The Pageant opens to the public at 10am and closes at 4.30pm.

MP visits local Hospital Tenbury MP Harriett Baldwin commented “It’s been a busy time in our local NHS with hospitals across the county coping with the extra winter pressures as a result of bad weather and the current serious flu bug. I popped in to say thanks to the staff at Tenbury Community Hospital which is doing really well and is even looking to recruit more staff soon.” Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, at Tenbury Hospital She added “We’ve also seen great news with the confirmation of over £29 million of capital funding to Hospitals as well as a further £4 million to help cope with deliver major capacity improvements for Worcestershire winter pressures.”

The next part of the ongoing roadworks in Tenbury Wells includes laying red Tarmac on the raised tables (sometimes described as “speed humps”) on the main road through the town, including by the pedestrian crossing lights and by the Crow.. Ken Pollock, Tenbury’s County Councillor, told us that this work is “…..scheduled to be laid on the 5th March onwards, overnight, but please note that the work is starting at 19.00 and not 21.00 as previously arranged. It should not take more than 2 or 3 nights to complete.” People who plan on travelling into or through Tenbury while the work is underway will therefore need to adjust their plans accordingly.
Christmas Concert
Demonstration at Tenbury Hospital Despite the damp weather, people still turned up outside Tenbury Hospital on February 3rd to highlight their concerns over cuts and over what has been described as a crisis in the NHS. This national day of action also saw activists making their views felt elsewhere, including in Worcester, Kidderminster, Malvern and Redditch. For an update on Tenbury Hospital, please turn to page 12.
Tenbury Town Band at Little Hereford Fete in 2017 Tenbury Town Band told us that “The Regal was once again the venue for our Charity Christmas Concert on Saturday 9th December. Tickets sold out very quickly, with more on a waiting list. Our Apprentice group and main band had been rehearsing hard to bring a fabulous concert of music together for an evening of unique entertainment. Derek White joined us to sing some of his Christmas favourites with the band, including, The Fairytale of
New York, Santa Baby and Skyfall... after all there is normally a 007 film on over Christmas! This year we chose to support Cafe 27, the Youth Cafe in Teme Street, Tenbury Wells. With a packed house and a well supported raffle we were thrilled to raise £1,088.” The band already has a calendar of bookings for this year, including the Civic Parade in Tenbury Wells on Sunday July 1st.

Brand new for 2017
Daisy Wilson, a former pupil at Tenbury High, was asked by The Ally Bally Bee Project to illustrate what is claimed to be the world’s first personalised children’s book about dementia. Matthew Adams, Project Founder, said “when I came across Daisy’s illustrations on Instagram I was blown away and I was so happy when she agreed to work on the project. Her contribution to the project has taken the book to another level and our customers love her beautiful style of drawing.” Daisy, from Leysters, said “Working on the project has been such an amazing experience - it challenged me on a professional level but also an emotional one. My grandma, who had dementia, passed away while the book was being developed so it gave the project a whole new meaning to me. I hope the book can help children all around the world understand a loved one’s dementia.” Daisy was taking a BTEC in Illustration at Hereford when her work was spotted on social media. She’s now studying illustration at UWE, Bristol. When asked if she would continue to illustrate books in the future she said “I really hope so! The Ally Bally Bee project was my first ever published work and holds a very special place in my heart. I learnt a lot through the whole process and I’m now hooked on the idea of continuing with picture books.” Figures claim that worldwide around 47 million people have dementia. The book aims to be both entertaining and educational while helping children understand the condition. Seventy Years ago 1948 was a significant year, with the UK starting to settle down after the war, with the nationalisation of key industries, and with the launch of the National Health Service. Sapey Ladies raised £2,000
The Ladies’ Section at Sapey Golf and Country Club reached their fundraising target of £2,000 for the MS Society in what was a very challenging year for the members. The Club was under threat of closure last Summer before the last-minute purchase by Wyldecrest Golf & Leisure secured the future, but not before the Ladies’ Section had shrunk from 43 to less than 25. 2017 Ladies’ Captain Annie Kendrick handed over a cheque for £2,000 to Andy Jarret, Area Fundraiser for MS Society, saying “I’m absolutely amazed that we reached our target. We only actually did two open
competitions but the ladies have been so generous in their support, collecting all their 5 pence pieces in pots, and attending a skittle evening and BBQ which raised lots of money”. On accepting the cheque, Andy Jarrett said “Many thanks to Annie and the ladies at Sapey Golf Club. To have raised a massive £2,000 is marvellous and will make such a difference to the roughly 1,500 living with the condition in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. This could fund 4 desperately needed short breaks for someone with MS, 200 calls to our helpline so that we can be there for people when they need it the most, or run an MRI scanner for

We wish them well! Seven months on from the threatened closure the newly-named Sapey Golf & Country Club is thriving with many of the original members having re-joined and with young players also being attracted, swelling membership numbers by over 100. Sales and Marketing Manager Cheryl Waring said “We feel that it’s so important to make sure that the veil of elitism in Golf is lifted and memberships are available to all who wish to play. We have created a membership level for occasional golfers as well as offering Junior membership absolutely free of charge. To secure our future we have to keep recruiting young members and we are delighted that the average age of our membership has dropped from 64 to 59 in just over six months!”

Barnardo’s Award for Tenbury Resident Alastair Marchant is an ‘independent visitor’ for children’s charity Barnardo’s. Independent visitors are befrienders who, for one day a month, invest their time in a young person in care. The aim is to understand and support them through fun activities in order to boost their confidence and self-esteem. Alastair started volunteering with the Barnardo’s Coventry & Warwickshire Children’s Rights Service in 2013 when he lived in Staffordshire. He moved to Tenbury Wells last year but wanted to continue in his role as an Independent Visitor despite the long distances. In recognition of his achievements Alastair has been awarded the Barnardo’s Marsh Trust Volunteer of the Year Award 2017 for the Midlands & South West. Barnardo’s Independent Visitor Alastair Marchant (left) receives his Barnardo’s children’s services manager Gail award from regional director Hugh Sherriffe Pajak, who nominated Alastair, said “Alastair has been invaluable to the independent visitor service ever since he first joined. He has supported two young people. The first was long-distance and continued until the young person became 18 and moved out of care. Alastair then moved to Worcestershire but was so dedicated that he asked for another match, despite the even longer distances. He has proved to be dedicated and reliable throughout the placement and a recent evaluation from the young person said that he “can’t wait” for the next visit. His volunteering is a tremendous example of what people can bring to a charity.” Alastair said “It’s been an absolute pleasure working as an independent visitor. It’s great fun, and if it’s possible to bring something positive to someone less fortunate at the same time, it makes every minute worthwhile. I’m incredibly proud to win this award and hope it encourages more people to consider taking up the role of an independent visitor.”
West End Star visits Dance Academy Zennor’s Dance and Musical Academy in Far Forest recently received a visit from West End star Andrew Chadwick. Andrew has starred in Fame, Starlight Express, Summer Holiday, Mary Poppins and as Lumiere in the Disney movie remake of Beauty and the Beast. He was the special guest of Zennor’s academy giving workshops to junior, senior and adult students. Zennor McGuire, the academy’s principal, thanked Andrew for his hard work, said it was a “Totally amazing night” and added “My performers loved you - and please come again.”

Good News for the Little Man In the Christmas 2017 issue of the Teme Valley Times, Peter Reynolds from Tenbury-based accountants Dyke Ruscoe & Hayes told us about the new £1,000 allowance for property income and explained the reasons behind it. In this issue Peter tells us about that £1,000 allowance’s close cousin, the trading allowance. Like the property allowance, this allows someone trading income of up to £1,000 before they have to report the income or pay tax on it. And if they have income in excess of £1,000 then they can elect to claim the £1,000 allowance against it, rather than the costs they actually incurred. It’s perfectly possible to have both the property allowance and the trading allowance, although in the case of the trading allowance it can’t be set against income from a partnership. Nor can you split up a business so you have some income covered by the allowance and some not; if you are involved in a particular trade then all that trade has to go through the one entity. Here are two examples to illustrate the new rules: Example 1 - Bill and Ben sell flowerpots in a 50:50 partnership, and have gross sales of £1,800 and costs of £1,200. They can’t make use of the trading allowance and continue to be taxed on partnership profits of £300 each. Example 2 - Bill and Ben sell flowerpots in a 50:50 partnership, and have gross sales of £1,800 and costs of £1,200. Bill also sells seeds and has gross sales of £800 and costs of £100, whilst Ben also sells garden tools and has gross sales of £1,600 and costs of £900. Whilst they are each taxed on partnership profits of £300, Bill can claim the trading allowance
against his income from selling seeds, giving him no additional taxable income, whilst Ben can either continue to be taxed on his £700 a year garden tools profits, or instead be taxed on his gross garden tools income of £1,600 less the trading allowance - i.e. on £600. As with the property allowance, the trading allowance is good news for very small traders, as it is for the Revenue in getting those sorts of people to tow the line. The reality is though that the changes were needed simply because of the volume of information the Revenue now have on the hidden economy; the new allowances show that the car-booters, eBayers and part-time gardeners who don’t meet the criteria are now coming under very close scrutiny. Anyone with undeclared income would be wise to come forward now; the Revenue probably already have them identified, and once the taxman comes knocking he will be very difficult and very expensive to deal with. For the small casual trader the new rules are a boon; for anyone else who is not currently owning up to all their income the rules are a stark warning: get it right now, or face the consequences of big tax bills and penalties, along with the misery of a tax enquiry.

Local MP to co-chair Rural Group Philip Dunne, the MP for Ludlow, has been elected as co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Rural Services. Mr Dunne said “I was very pleased to be
elected as co-Chair of the APPG for Rural Services, alongside my good colleague Rebecca Pow MP, to help ensure rural communities can come together and
provide a strong voice in Westminster. We know that providing effective services in rural areas can be expensive and difficult. So it is important we make Ministers acutely aware of the needs of rural communities. Just last week Rebecca and I co-hosted the first Rural Vulnerability Day in Parliament, where we were able to discuss a range of issues impacting on rural people and rural communities. Through the All-Party Group we will be able to investigate many of these issues in more detail and present our findings to Ministers. Importantly we will also look at examples of innovative responses being introduced by the service providers.” Graham Biggs MBE, Chief Executive of the Rural Services Network which provides the secretariat to the All-Party Group, said “We are delighted that Philip Dunne and Rebecca Pow have agreed to lead this important group. We have worked with both of them in the past and look forward to doing so again.”
Shropshire Producers at Westminster Food and drink producers from south Shropshire were recently welcomed to Parliament as part of a Shropshire Producers Day. Organised by Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski, this was an opportunity for MPs, Peers and staff to get to know some of the great produce that Shropshire can offer. Ludlow’s MP Philip Mr Dunne welcomed producers from the south of the county, including Chilton Gin (Bishops Castle), the Fairtrade coffee project from Bridgnorth Endowed School and Hobsons Brewery, plus representatives from the Ludlow Food & Drink Festival. Mr Dunne said “It was great to welcome some of South Shropshire’s best producers to Parliament to show off the great food and drink offer available in the Ludlow Constituency and across Shropshire more widely. It was a wellsupported event, ably organised by my good colleague Daniel Kawczynski, and all those I spoke to had found it a very worthwhile trip.”
