The approach of winter inevitably means an increase in frosty mornings. These can be unwelcome if you have an early start and everything is covered in ice, but the frost does have a beauty of its own, as has been captured in this photograph of Ludlow Castle. This picture can be found on pages 171/172 of ‘A Year in Shropshire’ by Mike, John and Lynne Hayward. For more about the book, please see page 25.

Street Works in Tenbury The road works in Tenbury have caused real problems for many of the shops on Teme Street, ranging from the difficulty of receiving deliveries to a noticeable drop in trade as a result of fewer people shopping in Tenbury, partly due to the loss of on-street parking spaces while the work has been carried out. As this issue of the Teme Valley Times makes its way to the printers, the work is approaching completion, with the County Council having assured shoppers and business owners alike that things will be back to normal by December 1st. Shopkeepers are hoping that local residents will then return to Tenbury, and that most won’t have already done their Christmas shopping elsewhere.

Parking in Tenbury

The Lights! The Christmas lights are looking great again this year. They really bring a festive touch to local towns in the run up to Christmas. Of course it’s not just the lights that give the town a festive feel, it’s also the window displays. Each year a lot of businesses make a real effort to decorate their windows for Christmas, not just to make their own shop look great, but also for the good of the town as a whole.

The good news is that Malvern Hills District Council has announced free parking on Tenbury’s Pay & Display car park from midday on Saturdays, and all day on Sundays, from 2nd December until Christmas Eve. A spokesman commented “The move has been introduced to help support traders during the festive season.” The bad news is that the minimum cost of parking in Tenbury’s Pay & Display has recently doubled or even trebled. Back in October a one-hour ticket was 50p. Now the cheapest tickets are £1 or £1.50, depending on the time of day. The more expensive tickets are valid for longer than the old 50p ticket, so some people will actually pay the same as they did in October, partly depending on when you buy the ticket and partly on how long you want to stop.

Mark Baldwin told us “On Friday 20 October, Branch Members and their friends met in Cleobury’s Parish Hall for a splendid evening’s entertainment. The Bridgnorth Ukulele Band have been to Cleobury before, but this must count as their best yet, and the audience the largest for many years. Their extensive repertoire ranged from ‘Sweet Valentine’, through numbers such as Elvis Presley’s ‘Teddy Bear’, Buddy Holly’s ‘You Won’t Matter Any More’, ‘YMCA’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and even a token George Formby number - ‘Leaning on a

Lamp Post’. Lead singer Barrie Taylor fronted the six-piece band, and kept an eye open for the arrival of the fish & chips (throwing in an occasional ‘I see no chips’ during the first half ). The interval provided the opportunity for the fish & chip suppers to be distributed, raffle to be drawn, and glasses re-charged at the bar (kindly provided by ‘Take A Sip’).” Nearly £700 was raised - a record! The Branch welcomes new members - ring 01299 270110 for a membership form.

New Petrol Station for Ludlow

Marty, Caroline, Sally, Di, Lisa, Mandy, Sarah, Freesia and Chloe would like to wish all our lovely clients a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year XXX

Construction work is well underway at the site of the new petrol station, alongside Bromfield Road (the former A49), between Ludlow Motors and the bridge over the River Corve. In addition to the new petrol station, which is expected to open 24 hours, the development will also provide a 3,000 sq ft store. Hopes are high that the result will be lower fuel prices, plus an end to the long queues that have plagued the Co-op petrol station at busy times.

Look no further for that special Xmas pressy. Our in-salon shop has an array of fab gifts. We have Wella System Professional, Elements and Eimi gift boxes specially designed for your own hair type. A full range of GHD stylers. Soap Opera gift vouchers and much more

How about our GLITTER POTS? Whether you’re off to a rave or want to spice up your look at Christmas?

We are all getting busy for Christmas and New Year. To avoid disappointment call us, email or FaceTime us. So we can book your appointment.

Winter Fair at Little Hereford There was a real buzz as everyone met up and chatted over the free coffee and biscuits, or decided to splash out on mince pies at 20p each! Festive music and somewhere to sit helped make it a real social event, as well being a Christmas shopping opportunity. Generous hampers of Christmas goodies were waiting to be claimed by the raffle winners. Homemade cakes, crafts, preserves and quality brica-brac helped make it easy to find a little something for someone - maybe even a jar of pickled pears for the foodie in your life! To name just a few possibilities, there were walnuts, vegetarian mincemeat mince pies, boiled fruit cakes, mincemeat muffins, apple jelly, chilli oil, pear chutney with prunes and walnuts, striking ‘tartan Scottie dog’ decorated cushions, and ‘mug rugs’ - but you had to be quick off the mark if you wanted the best bargains! Little Hereford WI’s display showed that the WI movement began in 1915 to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food for the war-torn nation. Little Hereford WI began in 1945. It has speakers on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in Little Hereford Village Hall. They’re also involved with WI campaigns, which have sometimes driven public opinion and Government Policy! Proceeds from this Winter Fair were to be split between the hall and church.

Ashford Carbonel Autumn Fair

Rally Cars in Tenbury!

A warm welcome was extended to visitors to Ashford Carbonel’s Autumn Fair, held in the village hall in aid of St Mary Magdalene Church. In the entrance hall a display about ‘The History of Our Villages’ (Ashford Carbonel and Ashford Bowdler) asked if people had photographs or memories they would like to share. In the main hall there was an impressive variety of pickles and preserves including ‘plum, lime and coriander’ chutney, pickled walnuts, vegetarian mincemeat and rowanberry, quince or hedgerow jellies. Dracan Woods were demonstrating the pyrography technique that they use to decorate their handmade wood items. Woodcraft snowmen with luminous noses stood next to delightful homemade insect houses complete with proper felt roofs, while lots of Fairtrade gifts and generous bags of apples for £1 meant there was no excuse for coming away without helping the fundraising! A busy tombola and raffle provided various wins and the refreshment ladies were kept busy, with donations being requested for teas and cakes.

This year’s R.A.C. (Roger Albert Clark) Rally saw scores of rally cars make their way through Tenbury Wells. After being scrutineered at Brightwells of Leominster on November 9th, they drove to Shelsley Walsh the following day for the first competitive sections of the rally. Having driven up and down (!) the hillclimb course, they travelled through Tenbury on their way to the first of the Welsh sections. The rally, which featured a number of local competitors, then headed up to Scotland, before finishing at Keilder on Nov 13th. The event, which has been described as “the biggest challenge in British special stage rallying for more than 20 years”, saw Roger Chilman (Hereford) and Bryan Thomas (Leominster) finishing in 3rd place, less than three minutes behind the winners. The event, which focusses on pre-1982 cars, is named after Roger Clark MBE, twice-winner of the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) Rally in the 1970s. Orleton Post Office & Stores

Contemporary Craft Show The Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft held their annual Autumn exhibition in the Beacon Rooms at Ludlow Castle. From tiny jewellery creations to larger pieces of furniture, all shapes and sizes of craft-work could be found.

Teme Valley Times As well as there being crafts on sale, this was an opportunity to meet skilled craftspeople. Engaging with the artists while enjoying the exhibition revealed the enthusiasm each had for their craft. The show would have been a wonderful opportunity to source exclusive one-offs, especially as something similar to a displayed piece could often be created to match your colour requirements, for example. The standard of craftsmanship was stunning and even if you didn’t buy, the experience could be described as inspiring. Look out for next year’s event and draw up your Christmas gift list early!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Open all day, seven days a week, this traditional drinking pub offers a range of beers plus ciders and Guinness. Located in the heart of the town’s main street, it offers a rare insight into how pubs used to be.

Teme St, Tenbury Wells

This friendly event ran for a couple of hours at St Mary’s Church and you could find lots of gift ideas including books, bath potions, beauty lotions, nail varnishes, stylish woolly hats, Hot Sox, fudge, lavender bags and Hobbycraft Christmas Cross stitch packs. There were cakes and preserves; crafts, tinsel trees, knitted tree decorations; a children’s lucky dip and three tombolas; and for £1.50 you could sit down and enjoy a hot drink and a mince pie or toasted teacake. Picture quizzes seem popular this year and they can pose a challenge: do you know your local area as well as you think you do? Quizzes can certainly help people get to know the area better and St Mary’s ‘Tenbury Teaser’ Picture Quiz, with 25 pictures of parts of buildings in Tenbury, wasn’t as easy as it might sound!

Abberley Christmas Fayre This happy and busy event was held in the village hall, with a jolly-looking Santa taking pride of place, up on the stage! Books, fresh fruit and vegetables, toffee and chocolatecovered apples from local Ballards Fruit Farm, a good selection of home baking, hundreds of craft items, jewellery, Christmas decorations, quality bric-a-brac, minion yoyos (a great stocking filler), scatter cushions and tinsel trees were all on offer. The silent auction had a good range of lots, from a generous hamper of fresh fruit or a watercolour of Grasmere, to a family ticket to Hereford Cider Museum or a bottle of wine with box of Swiss chocolates. Gluten-free cupcakes were soon snapped up and the ‘big’ tombola did a roaring trade. There was also a Christmas Cake raffle, a hamper raffle and a grand draw. Billed as ‘a great stocking filler’, the annual ‘Abberley Super Quiz’ (£2) was something you could puzzle over - with £50 of cash prizes! Raising funds for Abberley churches, it included a Picture Quiz and a 100-question Big Quiz. This was an event where it was easy to spend an hour or two, particularly as excellent refreshments were available in the side hall.

Orleton Bazaar ‘A great shopping opportunity at a village near you’ could describe the Orleton Bazaar, held in November in the village hall. You could even shop and lunch under the same roof! Orleton WI ladies had a fine selection of tray bakes, plus copies of the 2018 Herefordshire WI calendar, featuring members’ gardens. The St Michaels Hospice stall had a couple of guessing games, including Guess the weight of the Christmas Cake’. Ann and Alf Jenkins’ stall had lots of gift ideas including a heart-shaped plaque declaring ‘Mummy knows a lot but Nanny knows everything’! The Tweedies bears were out in force, each with an arm raised so it looks like he or she is waving to you! There was also a village photo quiz, with pictures to identify. Some excellent prizes had been donated for the Draw, including £10 vouchers for Orleton Stores and Howard Moseley Butchers; two substantial breakfast hampers; and wine, port and sloe gin. Other gift ideas included 3-D cards, goodie bags for your cat or dog, Christmas bunting, hand-crafted gemstone jewellery, May’s Preserves, Westwood Alpacas wool and knitted wear and some beautifully hand-printed cotton bags and cushion covers. It all showed that you don’t have to travel far to find a gift that’s a bit special!

Shelsleys Christmas Fair Organisers and helpers alike got into the spirit of things, with lots of festive hats, antlers and Christmas jumpers in evidence. Add in festive music and refreshment options that included slices of Christmas cake and it really began to feel like Christmas, despite being early November! The stalls didn’t disappoint. The Pickle Lady’s array of pickles with a good number of chilli jams (mild, medium, very hot) would have provided an unusual gift. Ecosoya wax candles and numerous fragranced melts from Purely Candles included Mistletoe, Christmas Hearth, Banana Nut Bread, Honeysuckle & Jasmine, Frankincense & Myrrh and Lemon Chiffon aromas. Anna-May’s art and Be-Dazzled Carvings both had some stunning work on show. Patchwork quilts were also on offer, with the producer’s words ‘A finished quilt is a labour of love, the price only indicates the cost of materials, the rest is given feely for you to enjoy’ emphasising what a unique gift a hand-made quilt could be. Worcester Black Pear Chutney from Kings Green Fruit; beautifully-made wooden trinket boxes; a turned money box in the shape of a beehive; cupcake soaps; ladies and men’s fragrances; and exquisite felted scarves incorporating vintage ‘broderie anglaise’ were just some of the other unusual items at the event.

Traffic in Eardiston

There was an unprecedented public attendance when traffic concerns in Eardiston were discussed at Lindridge Parish Council’s November meeting. Concerns were expressed about the speed of traffic, and about overtaking at speeds in excess of the 30 mph speed limit. The Chairman and Vice Chaiman explained that the Parish Council had been seeking improvements from Worcestershire Council’s Highways department for some years and that the County Council had refused to provide double white lines from one end of the village to the other. It was explained that in the hope of encouraging motorists to drive appropriately on the A443, white gates have been installed to mark village boundaries, a vehicle activated speed warning sign has been erected, and the village environment has been generally improved. The Chairman suggested that the problem reflected the inadequacy of the A443 for present traffic levels, adding that development in Tenbury and further west, and the upgrading of Holt Fleet Bridge for modern HGVs, had all had a significant impact. As it was felt that these concerns did not register with Worcestershire County Council, and because it was said that there are no plans for significant investment in the recently-published Transport Review for the next 10 years, it was announced that there is now a plan to form a lobby group, to cover the road from Holt to Tenbury. In Eardiston, the hope is to acquire adequate pavements, wide enough to take a mother and toddlers, plus double white lines, and possibly ‘pinch points’ at both ends of the village. The Chairman encouraged all who were present to write to their county councillor and MP, saying that ultimately it is public pressure that would lead to action. Chris Dell, Malvern Hills District Councillor for Lindridge, commented “The fact that so many people were at the meeting underlines how concerned local residents are.”

Cleobury Farmers Market

Teme Valley Times

November’s market was held - as usual - in St Mary’s Church and Billy Auger, from Augernick Fruit Farm, Hopton Wafers, had trays of festive cobnuts in the porch. Four varieties were available to taste, including Gunsleburt and Butler, with Butler being particularly fresh and juicy. Inside the church, ‘Good Game’ had some tasty-sounding sausages (duck and orange; pheasant and pear; wild boar and apple) plus venison meatballs and ribs. You could try Cosy Kitchen’s Bengal Chutney and the Pie Creator had Beef Bourguignon pies. Pot House Farm was there with jams, mulled apple juices and ‘Shroppie Sheep’ craft items and brain injury charity ‘Headway’ had lots of seasonal gifts and cards on their stall. The Local Market, in the market hall by the church, had a host of Christmas gifts; ‘natural’ door wreaths made using beech nut husks, fir cones and twigs; handmade crafts including a soft toy Rudolph the Reindeer (£4) and cute woolly snowmen. If you ever need inspiration for gift ideas events like this will certainly help!

Classic Beer Styles Brewed with Skill The heading explains the aim of Head Brewer Jimmy Swan when he founded Swan Brewery a couple of years ago, after over 20 years already amassed as a brewer. Brewed by hand in small batches on the Enterprise Park in Leominster, Swan Brewery ales are reaching pubs, clubs, festivals and shops in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The focus on sustainability of this family run business has been recognised from the outset as Swan Brewery holds the Green Business Award from the Society of Independent Brewers. Spent hops and grain are passed to gardeners and farmers; surplus pallets are turned into furniture; sturdy empty malt sacks are reused by cider producers, woodworkers and charities. Swan Brewery works with local suppliers for everything from stainless steel pipework to printing and IT support and plays an active part in the local business community. Swan Gold is a refreshing golden ale at 4.0%, complemented by Ruffled Feathers, a 3.8% red-amber session ale. These two in-stock beers are joined by seasonal specials such as Black Swan, a 4.5% roasted coffee stout, or Seven Swans, a 4.2% crisp blonde ale brewed with Olicana, offering new world style hop character. Look out for these on a bar near you. For beers to drink at home; for hosting your own party or for a family gathering, you can pick up bottles of Swan Brewery ales from local independent shops, from the brewer himself at food fairs and Leominster town events, or directly through the brewery shop. Larger party beer packs can be ordered direct from the RETAIL, REPAIR, MANUFACTURING

brewery. The brewery shop is open every Friday 9.30 to 2.30. On Friday 1st December there will be extended hours to 5.30pm for free tasting of Seven Swans. Full of Information! Leominster Tourist Information Centre (TIC) has settled in at its new home at 11 Corn Square, where the team of volunteers welcomes locals and visitors alike promoting the town and the surrounding area. Leominster is particularly lively at this time of year as it has such a wide range of excellent independent shops, plus seasonal events and the colourful Friday Market. The new TIC premises offer many opportunities including exhibition space in the Old Stable Gallery, with a Secret Garden at the rear for events. Earlier this year, the Leominster Food Fayre was a great success and there are exciting plans for Saturday 9th December! Leominster town centre will be busy with the ever-popular Victorian Street Market from 10am to 4pm but after that, as it gets dark, the TIC will be transformed into the truly magical world of Narnia. Families will be able to step through the wardrobe doors and enter the snowy woodland where Father Christmas will greet them with his reindeer. Leominster Tourist Office offers great ideas for locally-themed gifts, including a variety of local food, drinks and souvenirs that would be lovely in a Christmas hamper. The TIC has recently extended its range of sales with a drinks licence and now offers gift packs of local beers and ciders. There is also a wide selection of books and maps, including guide books, local history and fiction written by local authors. If you are stuck for gift ideas, surely you can never go wrong with a local calendar! There is a choice of at least five local calendars, each of which sells well each year. These are especially popular for family members who live away from home. To celebrate Leominster’s history of the Ryeland sheep, the

There are also some beautiful sheepskin rugs that are locally-sourced and treated entirely organically - particularly welcome for people who are sensitive to chemicals. If you haven’t been in to see the new building yet, everyone is welcome to come and browse. There is, as always, a wide selection of local free leaflets promoting Leominster town centre and the tourist attractions in the area. Do keep a look out for the free art exhibitions.

A Stitch in Time Stitches of Leominster has been known as the ‘Knitters Favourite’ for over twenty years, and as well as being known as the ‘local’ wool shop, we are happy to assist with all sewing needs and clothes repairs and alterations. A growing part of the business over recent years is our really competitively priced curtain and roman blind making service. The whole of this is run with Liz Watkins at the helm. Liz has been a knitter since the age of ten when her sister placed a pair of needles in her hands and she has never looked back. Having spent 20 years in Drapers Lane, and having outgrown the space, Liz moved the business to No.2 High Street, where the business now extends over two floors. All the knitters’ needs are on the ground floor, and the downstairs is full of wonderful fabrics and sewing accessories - ideal for all the general household, quilting and dressmaking enthusiasts. The history of the shop is long and varied and can be traced back to when it was the home of John Scarlett Davis, a local renowned artist, whose work can still be seen in Leominster Museum. In the late 1960s the cellar and downstairs was the first nightclub in Leominster called the ‘J Club’. It was frequented by many aspiring local musicians, many still playing in local bands. Johny Kidd and the Pirates played at the club along with many others and if anyone reading this has any photos or memories Liz would love to hear from you as she is compiling a timeline of the shop’s history. We offer a sewing machine service and dry cleaning service with a swift turnaround. We also stock clothes dyes, jewellery-making accessories, tapestry and silks for needlework and many other crafts. Come and see! For more information contact Sitches Wool Shop on 01568 610467 or email liz.watkins4@btinternet.com or visit www.stitcheswoolshop.com

Oldfields Garage Services is a local, family-run business which has been providing car servicing and repairs in Leominster for over 26 years. Paul and Cheryl Benson took over what was Moons Garage and continued to build a thriving garage business. In 2009, their eldest son Tim joined the company to look after the customer service side of the business and they soon moved to their current site on the Leominster Enterprise Park. The new site benefited from purpose-designed facilities, enabling them to service larger vans and 4x4s along with introducing MOT testing, air conditioning regassing and improve their modern vehicle diagnostics capability. The additional space improved parking and also gave the

ability to increase capacity and improve responsiveness to customer requirements. This year has seen the latest development for Oldfields with the launch of “Oldfields Campers”, a new Camper Van Hire Service. Launching the service with “Tommy the T4”, a lovely 2-berth VW Transporter camper van, interest exceeded expectations for the first year, and they are now looking to introduce a 4-berth camper van to the fleet for 2018. Tim Benson said “Thanks to the support of our customers, Oldfields Garage continues to grow steadily and remains busy throughout the year.” He added “We wanted to expand what we do into a new area and have been delighted with the interest in camper hire and the bookings for Oldfields

Campers this year. It seems that people really want to explore the local area and beyond, without being tied to one location and that’s what a camper van gives you.” The idea of people wanting to explore with the freedom of being able to go anywhere in the UK is clearly gaining in popularity. Tim said “Since being available for hire this year, Tommy has stayed in the Leominster area for one trip, but he has also visited the Brecon Beacons, Lake Vyrnwy, Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Elan Valley, the West Wales Coast, Shropshire and even a Gloucestershire Regatta.” Prices start from £65 per night for longer trips or £150 off-peak for 2 nights. The campers come well equipped with pretty much everything you need for a self-catering trip. Crockery, cutlery, cooking facilities and even tea, coffee and a kettle are provided. The only things you need to think about bringing are bedding, clothing and food. Oldfields aim is to enable minimum preparation for hirers so they really can turn up, complete the paperwork, then go on a camper tour. Tax and the little man Peter Reynolds from local accountants Dyke Ruscoe & Hayes gave us the following insight into how some income may be tax-free in future. People with a holiday home for their own use often also let it to family and friends for a few days, really just to cover costs. Until now, there has been a requirement to tell the taxman about the income, however small, and whether or not it gives a profit and therefore a tax bill. In an effort to simplify things for both the property owner and the government, there are new rules now, which allow each property owner not to report income of under £1,000 in a tax year. Note that this is income, not profit so even rents of £1,001 mean that the taxman must be told. The new rules can even be helpful to those with income over the £1,000 limit, best illustrated by an example. John and Rita own a caravan at Borth. They use it mainly for their own purposes, but they also

let it out to friends and family. The lets bring them in £2,400 a year; realistically, because most of the year the caravan is there for their own use, the costs against that letting income are no more than £600 a year. Until this tax year, John and Rita have had to tell the taxman about the income, and they’ve each had £900 a year of rental profits, costing them £180 each in tax. In future, whilst they still have to declare the income (at £1,200 each it’s over the £1,000 allowance), they can elect to use the £1,000 allowance each against their gross income. So, instead of being taxed on profits of £900 each, they’re taxed on profits of £200 each. That saves them tax of £140 each - as well as the effort of laboriously working out what the allowable expenses against the income might have been. So, the new rules are potentially beneficial to many people. The reason for the introduction

of the new rules though hides a real threat to those who have failed to play the game. Many people are unaware of just how much information the taxman now has at his disposal and how the computer software he has invested in is revealing a treasure-trove of undeclared income. So much so that he can’t cope - and he needs the new rules to weed out the small cases so he can concentrate on the larger ones. For anyone with income they have previously not declared, the chances are ever-higher of being found out - and the results can be swingeing penalties - in some cases resulting in

A Year in Shropshire This hardback book is the work of the Hayward family. Mike (father) and John (son) are professional landscape photographers and Lynne (wife and mother) is a journalist. In the book’s introduction, Lynne comments “It’s a challenge to work on a book with two photographers who often disagree about what makes a good picture. When one of those photographers is your husband, and the other your son, then life gets very complicated indeed. In our case, the heated discussions merely underlined our determination to do justice to this beautiful county that we are so happy to call home.” With about 160 images, ranging from landscapes to historic buildings, animals, events and even an abandoned tractor, it will surely interest a wide range of people.

payments of over three times what the tax bill would have been. So, for those at the small end the new rules are an opportunity; for others though they are an indicator of a real threat - and coming clean now before the taxman gets in has to be the thing to do. There is a new trading allowance running alongside the rental allowance, also worth £1,000 a year, and also aimed at weeding out the small traders so the Revenue can concentrate on the bigger fish; we’ll tell you more about that one in a future article.

The Apples and Orchards of Worcestershire This book, by local apple expert Wade Muggleton, is subtitled “A County Pomona”. It sets out to record and illustrate Worcestershire’s own apples and pears; some varieties are fairly well-known, but there are many that few people will have heard of. Very local varieties include Dewdulip Seedling, sent to the National Fruit Collection in 1946 by Rev Lee, then vicar of Eastham. There is also Haughty’s Red, thought to have come from Kyre, and Hope Cottage Seedling, raised in 1903 by Mrs Oakey at Hope Cottage, Rochford.

An interesting book, it would be a fascinating guide to creating your own heritage orchard, should you wish to do so. The book is available from www.marcherapple.net at £7 + £1.50 p&p. All proceeds go to the Marcher Apple Network.

The Tenbury Agricultural Society’s Autumn Show was held on Friday October 20th at Penlu Sports Club in Burford. As usual, there were classes for a range of agricultural products, including hops, apples, pears and roots, plus cider, perry, wine, pumpkins and scarecrows. Nick Champion carried out the auction in the entertaining way that we have come to expect at this event.
