Three legs better?

‘Four legs good, three legs better’ could easily be a misquote from George Orwell’s Animal Farm, but in Tenbury Wells it’s got more to do with The Market Tavern’s fundraising three-legged race!

Back by popular demand, this took place on Easter Sunday, and lots of weird and wonderful combinations could be seen making their way, in varying stages of disarray, up and down Teme Street and across the bridge into Burford.

The spectacle meant there were smiles aplenty during the day and it was obvious that many shoppers were doing a double-take, trying to work out what was going on.

This LEGO twosome was one of the most eye-catching, but congratulations go to all who took part, along with thanks to the organisers.

Simply Red? The long-running saga of Tenbury’s ‘public realm’ works continues, with the most recent phase being the laying, overnight, of a new red road surface on the raised areas by the Crow and by Bowketts, and also at the traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossing on Teme Street.

Concerns were expressed when the ‘raised tables’ were new that their surface wasn’t red enough to make the humps stand out clearly. The new surface finish has addressed this. However, the raised area near the Tesco store has not yet been surfaced similarly.

Tenbury’s County Councillor, Dr Ken Pollock, commented “Tesco has not fulfilled its obligations under the S3278 agreement and we are pursuing money from its bond to complete the work. I hope this will not be long delayed. In addition there are a couple of items of street furniture that they need to approve, or supply. I hope the final effect will help revive trade in Tenbury, to the benefit of retailers and the public alike. I hear mixed messages on the way it is all working out, but I am inclined to be positive in general.”

Ludlow Civic Award Nominations Ludlow Town Council is inviting nominations for Civic Awards. There are three categories: people over 18 (Civic Award), people under 18 (Young Persons’ Civic Award), and Community Group (Civic Award). The deadline for nominations reaching the Council is 12.30pm on Tuesday May 1st.

Nominees should have made a material contribution to the advancement, well being and welfare of the people of Ludlow; or demonstrated outstanding citizenship; or carried out unpaid work in the community for some time; or through their endeavours put Ludlow on the map; or through their contribution made Ludlow a better place to live.

Nominations must be proposed and seconded by residents within the Ludlow Parish Boundary and/or who appear in the electoral register for Ludlow. Members of the Council may in their private capacity nominate individuals, but no nomination will be considered in respect of any sitting Town or Unitary Councillors, or serving employees.

However, past Councillors and employees are eligible.

The presentation of the Awards will be made at the Mayor Making ceremony to be held at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms on May 23rd at 7pm.

Making a Difference Bowkett’s of Tenbury Wells have presented £1,500 to the Burford Parent & Toddler Group. The money was raised via NISA’s ‘Making a Difference Locally’ scheme, which raises money for the local community when customers buy NISA’s Heritage brand products and/or products featured with the MADL logo in Bowkett’s leaflet.

The group spent some of the money on new equipment for the children, including a fun street scene table, a teepee to hideaway in, and some book and storage cupboards that are easy for the staff to wheel away.

Lightning Seeds

Tenbury ready to Rock!

Plans for the fourth Tenbury Music Festival on June 30th are well underway and the organisers are delighted at the response.

Festival Director Graham James said “With our headline act of the Lightning Seeds and

other great bands, some of them returning by popular demand, playing from midday to midnight this is going to be a sell out! I am absolutely thrilled with booking the Lightning Seeds - to me it’s as big as when the last four

boys came down from Liverpool in 1967!”

When the Beatles played in Tenbury in 1967 the venue was The Bridge Hotel on Teme Street; this year’s music festival will take place on the green open space of The Burgage with its riverside setting. A rain marquee, beer tent, food vendors, cocktail bar and camping in an adjacent field are just some of the facilities offered.

Festival Chair David Burton commented “In addition, starting earlier in the day on our River Stage, we have some powerful spoken word sessions and young musicians who have been supported through tutoring workshops held during the year, thanks to Arts Council England funding”.

David added “With Tenbury Music Festival’s reputation clearly growing there has been a strong demand for tickets since our new website went live in February and while our Early Bird Tickets are still available we want to encourage the local community to buy as soon as possible - tickets are available on-line and through Tenbury TIC. It’s going to be a fantastic day and we hope to raise significant funds and awareness for our nominated charity The Teenage Cancer Trust”.

Bill Wiggin, the MP for North Herefordshire, visited one of Herefordshire’s award-winning five star holiday and leisure parks during national tourism week in March. Mr Wiggin, accompanied by Managing Director Glenn Jones of ‘Discover Parks’ and Manager of Pearl Lake Leisure Alex Davidson, undertook a tour of the 80-acre park at Shobdon, where over 200 park homes attract visitors.

“There’s a huge rise in the number of people wanting to buy into holiday home ownership” said Mr Jones. “Our three parks at Shobdon, Eardisland and Presteigne are proving very popular already this season keeping over thirty employees extremely busy. Honorary Consul Monsieur Robert Mille with Jim Froggatt at the award ceremony

Local man honoured

Local D-Day veteran Jim Froggatt has been awarded a top French honour for his role in the D-Day landings which helped liberate France during World War Two. Jim, who is now a Chevalier (Knight) in the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur (National Order of the Legion of Honour), lived on the family farm in Eastham for 87 years before moving into Tenbury. He received his award from Honorary French Consul Monsieur Robert Mille at a ceremony in the Pump Rooms. He has previously received Defence and War Medals from the Defence Council in London.

He was 20 years old when asked to volunteer for the Royal Navy for two months as a trained volunteer in the Royal Observer Corps. After a short training period, he found himself en route to Normandy aboard the “Maid of Orleans”. They made a number of dangerous crossings carrying troops to the Normandy beaches and on their final return voyage were hit.

Froggatt was trapped by falling debris and rescued by a colleague before helping others from the sea into lifeboats.

They made it home safely and within 6 weeks of leaving, the young farmer was back at work in Eastham.

Leominster Medieval Pageant

This day-long Pageant packed with activities and demonstrations enabled visitors to Leominster Priory to see how people lived, played and fought in the 15th Century. The mix of living history, craft fayre and day-long refreshments worked well, especially if you had the time to talk with the enthusiastic re-enactors, artisan producers and stall holders.

Basically, anyone dressed in period costume was happy to be quizzed about who they were, what they were doing, and why they were doing it. This gave a fun learning atmosphere to the whole day where even as an adult you could take the opportunity to keep asking the “Why?” question, often associated with the very young!

The young had a chance to get close up to a knight in shining armour, being allowed at a safe time to cross the demarcation line which warned that ‘any limbs past this point could be chopped, shot or blown off’.

Outdoor events included archery, arms and armour displays, a skirmish (with clouds of mystical-looking pink smoke) and a Round Table tournament. Indoor activity included medieval music, dances and a talk on medieval instruments and music.

At one point it was wonderfully bizarre to see the Minstrel tuning his Hurdy Gurdy using a visitor’s smart phone app, and it did sound better afterwards!

Mead, Portuguese custard tarts, breads, hams, strong cider,

rosehip syrup, crab apple jelly with sage or rosemary, Easter biscuits and faux Goth candles were all on offer, along with spinning demonstrations and wools from Fleeces & Pieces, medieval handicraft demonstrations and the Mortimer History Society stand. Medieval board games to try included a circular chess board and there was even a dance display at Grange Court, with tuition if you felt like joining in!

An end-of-day procession by the re-enactors around the Grange - hard work for knights in full armour and carrying weapons - and a final dance brought the day to a close.

Leominster’s Swan Brewery was giving beer away on Good Friday!

Only a half pint per person, so don’t get too excited, but it certainly gave people a chance to try their ‘Barrel of Laughs’ “clouded chuckleberry wheat beer”. A chuckleberry is a cross between a redcurrant, a gooseberry and a jostaberry - which is itself a hybrid of a gooseberry and blackcurrant.

Local residents gathered at Eastham Memorial Hall on March 10th, largley to mark the success of the bid for a grant of £260,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, but also to enjoy tea, coffee, cake and a chat! Added to funds that have been raised locally, the grant makes it financially possible to replace the existing building, which has served Eastham for approaching a century.

Assembly Rooms Shropshire Council and the Ludlow and District Community Association (LDCA), the community-based charity which runs the south Shropshire arts and community centre, have signed a lease for the building, which will allow a £2 million project to get underway.

The project will see the Ludlow Assembly Rooms grow and take over the ground floor of the 19th Century building, with an entrance onto Castle Square, improved accessibility and a new lift.

The ground floor will house a new Visitor Information and Box Office facility, plus a café/ restaurant. The project will also overhaul the building’s heating, air conditioning and other services.

Funding support for the project has been agreed from European Regional Development Fund, Arts Council England, Shropshire Council and Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Gareth Williams, LDCA Chair said “It’s taken a huge amount of very hard work over many years by the staff and board at the Assembly Rooms to secure the funding for this really exciting project. I am delighted that this is now starting to bear fruit.

“Over the next 12 months we will see a real transformation of the building, putting the Assembly Rooms even more clearly at the heart of Ludlow. We are extremely grateful to both the ERDF Programme for England and the Arts Council for the support they are providing but I also want to acknowledge the huge part played by our MP, Philip Dunne, who has helped us enormously.”

Mr Dunne commented “There have been considerable hurdles along the way, in particular in bringing together all the interested parties, to ensure different funding conditions were met. But it is great news for the whole community of Ludlow and the South Shropshire cultural scene that Ludlow Assembly Rooms can now begin their major transformation project.”

The papers must get through!

Out and About in the Snow The snow in March inconvenienced many people, but spare a thought for those who were out and about in the early morning delivering newspapers or milk. The likes of Phil Gray, Michael Jones, Teme Dairy, Bodens and more do what they can to get through despite the weather, sometimes in the dark, often on ungritted roads and, inevitably, sometimes in sub-zero temperatures.

Phil Gray is looking to clock up 30 years of service this year, delivering milk and newspapers to the local area from his base in Eardiston. Phil told us that the Friday when the weather was particularly bad was the first time he hadn’t been able to make deliveries but as neither the milk nor the papers reached him, there wasn’t much he could do about it!

Michael Jones, who delivers papers in an area that’s roughly centered on Abberley, also told us that earlier this year he reached his 30th anniversary of delivering newspapers, and gave us a bit more information about his business.

Michael said “I took over the business from Joe Clarke who ran the shop in Abberley Village, as he had decided to retire. I think he had been delivering papers for about 25 years. I was working at a garage in Dudley but there was a lot of travelling as I was living in Cleobury Mortimer, so I was looking for something nearer to home. My mother rang and told me the paper round was for sale so I had a chat with Mr Clarke and went round with him for a couple of days to see how it all worked.

Michael Jones enjoying a wellearned half at The Bell at Pensax “At that time the round was much smaller, basically Abberley and Great Witley, but over the years I’ve gradually expanded it so I now deliver from Bayton to Shrawley, and Christine delivers to the Rock and Heightington area. “I really enjoy being out and about in the local area, especially on a glorious spring morning. Some winter mornings can be more challenging, but I’m certainly looking forward to delivering papers for many years yet.”

On March 24th a group of enthusiasts set out from Boraston to see historic remnants of the infrastructure of what was once the Leominster Canal. The walk, arranged by the Friends of the Leominster Canal, took place on a somewhat chilly morning, but this seemed to do little to dampen the enthusiasm of those who had turned out for the event.

Much of this walk took place on private land, by kind permission of the relevant landowners, so this was an opportunity to see features, some only recently discovered, that cannot usually be seen by the public. The Friends organise a number of walks each year.

Despite being called the Leominster Canal, the canal never actually reached Leominster, ending instead at a wharf by what is now the A49, a short distance north of the town. The other end of the canal was at

Mamble and the route was particularly useful for the coal trade, enabling coal to be transported from mines in the Mamble area more readily, and more cost-effectively, than would have been possible on the roads of the time.

There was a plan to continue the canal to Kington in the west, and eastwards to Stourport, where it would have connected to the River Severn, but this ambition never came even close to fruition.

Opened in the 1790s, the canal never paid a dividend to its shareholders, and in the mid19th century it was sold to a railway company.

Part of the canal’s route was then used for the Tenbury and Bewdley Railway, which itself closed in the 1960s.

Gardening Club Clows Top Gardening Club told us “The month of May for many gardeners is one of the best months in the garden, the weather is getting warmer, but beware frosts can still strike anytime. Plants that are raised in the greenhouse will need to be hardened off. It’s a daily chore, moving young plants in and out of the green house but it is worth it.

Now is the time to take softwood cuttings of trees, shrubs, perennials and climbers. Also don’t forget to feed flowering shrubs & roses.”

The March meeting was the Spring Show and the Club would like to express many thanks to Derek Walker for judging the show. The Show winners were: Joint 3rd Ann Hingley & Bob Marriott, 2nd Chris Cowdell, 1st and Best Exhibit Marion Wilson.

The same evening, Clows Top hosted the Annual Inter-Club Quiz for the ‘Jim Greenhow’ Challenge Shield.

Derek Walker was Quizmaster, and there were four teams representing Astley, Bewdley, Clows Top and Kidderminster. Congratulations were given to the Clows Top team for winning the shield with a brilliant performance.

Art at Easter!

Once again there was a stunning collection of original art on display at Rock Church over the Easter weekend.

This was the 19th exhibition held by the Friends of Rock Church and it was again curated by artist John Instance. For many years John has painstakingly laid out the exhibition, ensuring that the art makes the most of the historic setting in the large Norman church.

First-time exhibitors joined with regulars to showcase art in its various forms. The Friends of Rock church commented “This year we have 38 artists taking part with 150 paintings on show together with jewellery, ceramics, wood turning, walking sticks and cards. A magnificent achievement!”

Always a pleasure to browse, the event was officially opened on the Saturday by local resident and artist Claire Spencer. In her opening speech she rhetorically asked if churches were the place for art, answering that indeed they were with artists always looking for opportunity and space to exhibit. “Art”, she said, brings “colour, delight and memory to the walls of a home” and in closing gave ‘a big thank you’ to John and Shelia Nott and the Friends for the chance to show the artworks and she hoped that this exhibition would inspire people, particularly the young to come and take up art.

Spring Lambing Day

The annual Spring Lambing Day at the Walford Campus of North Shropshire College took place in March. The large flock of sheep at the Campus meant there were hundreds of lambs for people to see and the day allowed the public to experience a snapshot of the kind of work that goes on ‘on the farm’.

Other activities included robotic milking, welly wanging, clay pigeon shooting and a tombola, and visitors were entertained by

the Porthywaen Silver Band, playing in the College’s Walled Garden. The event also marked the opening of the new Walford Wood Forest School.

Penny Hardy, Business and Innovation Assistant at NSC, said “It was wonderful to see such a large number of visitors attending. Many families commented on what a lovely time they had enjoyed.

We would like to say thanks to all of our exhibitors, the Corbet School, and Moor Farm for allowing us to operate the popular tractor and trailer ride up to the event.”

The adverse weather hit many local events, including the event that was scheduled to take place at Sapey on 11th-12th April. On April 7th, British Eventing commented “We are very grateful to the Organisers and BE Officials who have made huge efforts to run the event including making most of the preparations to the cross country course. However, following this morning’s site inspection, the decision has been made to abandon the event as the site is waterlogged and the rain continues.”

Audrey Thacker, from Sapey Cross Country, said “The wet has been unremitting. We have also had to cancel our April 22nd event.”

Whether you are an artist or photographer; a grower of vegetables, plants, fruits or flowers; a cook or a floral art devotee, now is the time to start thinking about which local shows you might like have a go in this year!

Perusing the classes on offer is always helpful and the Tenbury Show’s Horticultural Section schedule is already available. The Show is set to take place on the first Saturday of August and, as usual, as well as the stalls and the excitement in the arenas, there will be an extensive ‘Horticultural Section’ under canvas. This is a section that spreads far wider than just horticulture, as it includes classes such as photography, art, cakes and preserves.

It’s also a very inclusive section, with some classes for Seniors, Juniors and Children, so it’s a great opportunity for the whole family to actually take part in the show, and you never know, one of you might win a prize!
