Tenbury 10k Nearly 200 runners took part in Tenbury’s 10 kilometre run on August 5th. From the start, Tenbury postman and cricketer Darren Thompson (172; 9th overall, 2nd V50 male) can be seen ahead of eventual winner Stuart Robinson (147) and Tessa Robinson (148; 5th overall, fastest female), with local accountant Tim Giles (sunglasses; 32nd overall, 8th V40 male) close behind.

Also in the photo are Graham Bond (179; 14th overall, 3rd V50 male), Samantha Davies (69; 89th overall, 21st senior female) and Angela Faulkner (62; 61st overall, first V50 female).

Stuart Robinson can also be seen receiving his award from Tenbury’s Mayor, Cllr Sue Perry.

Tenbury Applefest Tenbury’s Apple Festival will once again be held on the Burgage in Tenbury Wells. This year’s date is October 6th and the gates open at 10am.

The organisers told us that the Apple Marquee will have over 300 varieties of apples, pears & quinces, provided by local supplier F P Matthews, and that the Marcher Apple Network will be on hand to identify apple varieties (please bring three of each variety) and share knowledge on growing and looking after apple trees.

Appleteme, in the main marquee, invite you to bring along your washed apples to press into juice to take home - bring clean containers (approx. one carrier bag of apples = 1 litre of juice).

Other attractions will include crafts, demonstrations, Morris dancers, choirs, Punch & Judy, Bandemonium, facepainting, the Tenbury Teme Valley Band, food & drink, a licensed bar, a shopping village with gifts, alpaca minitreks, owls, animal encounters, children’s rides, classic vehicles and a town crier.

The organisers added “This year we have the World War 100 Bell Tent and its representatives who will be dressed as a Nurse and a soldier from the day. They will be sharing their knowledge of rationing and the Home Front with you.”

There will also be apple-themed window displays by the town’s retailers in the run up to October 6th and the competition winners are to be presented with their certificates on Friday 5th October.

This summer, Bill Wiggin, MP for North Herefordshire, was out and about in his constituency, holding surgeries at a number of locations. On July 31st he could be found in Leysters at the Duke of York (see photo), while on September 7th he was at the Roebuck in Brimfield.

Local professionals Tim Giles (dhjh Tenbury Wells LLP, Chartered Certified Accountants) and Nikki Doherty (Norris and Miles Solicitors) have been training and entering many races this year, including the Tenbury 10k. On September 9th they competed in the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon, both having run it for the first time last year. Like last year it was a wet race but Tim and Nikki both achieved personal bests over this distance. Nikki will be involved in the Sprint Triathlon at the Ludlow Leisure Centre on 30th September. This involves a 400 metre swim and a 27 kilometre bike ride, followed by a 6.25 kilometre run.

Leominster Food Fayre A market square full of stalls brought together a mouthwatering collection of artisan food and drink for Leominster’s Food Fayre. Town Crier Richard Brookman opened proceedings and Mayor Cllr Jenny Bartlett welcomed everyone to the fayre. Speciality products such as gluten-free, vegan, organic, sugar-free and dairy-free were prominent, with small producers obviously catering to this growing market. Some delicious food and drink was available to taste and there was a good variety of stalls enhancing the town’s own substantial offer.

This year, two cookery demonstrations took place in the Old Stable Gallery. Fresh from BBC2’s ‘Top of The Shop’, Emily of Three Fruity Ladies tantalised taste buds with her cookery demonstration and later in the day Gill from Swan Brewery showed what could be made with products left over from brewing beer!

As the sun continued to shine the Town Crier entertained the crowds with a medley of music hall songs including ‘Burlington Bertie’, ‘Don’t put your Daughter on the Stage’ and ‘The Laughing Policeman’.

Firmly established in Leominster’s calendar, this Food Fayre was well worth a visit, particularly for a more relaxed experience than larger food festivals offer.

Ludlow Museum’s 2nd Birthday!

It was free entry and light refreshments with flags and balloons when Ludlow Museum celebrated its second birthday. Deputy Town Clerk Kath Adams said “We have had around 8,000 visitors in our first two years and we encourage locals especially to come and visit since the museum focuses on the history of Ludlow and its surrounding area. We welcome bookings from community groups who would like an introduction to the museum and its exhibits. People are always surprised by what is here when they come up!”

The museum is open 10-4 Friday, Saturday and Sunday (entry £1) and has an informative facebook page: @thebutterx.

The current temporary exhibition is ‘Fossils in Shropshire’, changing on the 29th September to ‘WW1 Memorabilia’ and a celebration of 100 years of trading by Ludlow retailer Poyners.

Occasional fund-raising talks are held at 6.30pm at the museum, with tickets at £3 on the door, including refreshments. Money raised supports the museum and on October 25th David Bremner will talk about building a replica of his grandfather’s Bristol Scout WW1 Aircraft.

Little Hereford Art

An exceptional range of art was on display in the Village Hall, raising funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance and Little Hereford Church. From oils and acrylics to a delicate ballpoint study of three lambs; from photography, watercolours and lino-cuts to a stunning collection of detailed graphite drawings of the natural world by Lesley Morgan.

Fully appreciating everything meant a slow progression around the main hall and side hall. Prices ranged from around £10 to around £150, with a particularly tempting amount of choice in the £30 to £60 bracket, and home-made cakes and refreshments were on tap throughout the event.

Eastham Show hits 50!

Colourful balloons led the way from the car park field to the fete activities as Eastham’s 50th Fete and Flower & Produce Show got under way in and around the church. Fittingly, background music for the afternoon event was hits from the 1960’s.

You could guess the name AND the weight of a sheep, buy some lovely fresh local produce or peruse the extensive collection of plants for sale. The fun dog show was delayed by the sheer number of canines wanting to ‘have a go’!

The tombolas encouraged many to part with a pound or two, as did the bric-a-brac and the cake stall, with home-made creations including courgette tea bread.

In the produce and flower show, laid out in the church, a healthy entry of 11 Victoria sponges must have made judging tricky, but K Lavender won ‘first’!

Activities for youngsters included Punch and Judy, decorate a gingerbread man, a sandy beach to play on and balloon animals. At the ‘Great Potato Weigh In’ pupils from Lindridge school could discover how well their potatoes had grown - there was fun to be had turning out the pots and searching the compost for even the smallest potato!

The silent auction included a Facial at Pure Beauty in Tenbury, a dozen quail eggs every week for 4 weeks, and a singing lesson with Erika Jones, Eastham’s own resident opera singer. Cream teas, art, books and Tenbury Town Band all helped make it easy to enjoy the pleasures of a traditional country gathering!

Festival donates to Teenage Cancer Trust Following this year’s Tenbury Music Festival, the organisers invited Charlotte Kendall, from Teenage Cancer Trust, to visit Tenbury and receive a cheque on behalf of the Trust.

Festival Chair David Burton, together with Company Secretary Melanie Fletcher, expressed great pleasure in presenting the cheque for £2,000 saying “As well as having a great festival this year, blessed with good weather, it’s the icing on the cake to be able to support Teenage Cancer Trust in this way”.

Charlotte said “It’s fantastic to have the support of Tenbury Music Festival each year and we have been delighted to follow its growth in popularity since its inception in 2015 well done Tenbury!”

Great Witley Arts and Crafts Now in its eighth year, the Great Witley Arts and Crafts exhibition, held in Great Witley church, goes from strength to strength. Run over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the preview evening on August 24th was packed as art lovers and supporters filled the pews and enjoyed Pimms and canapés surrounded by outstanding art and architecture.

A further treat was a short talk given by Henry Sandon MBE on the Worcester Porcelain painters and gilders. But before he started, being told that he had only very recently celebrated his 90th birthday, the audience gladly sang an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday to You’.

Henry was accompanied by Ken Russell, a past Master Gilder at Worcester, and they brought along with them a small collection of pieces from the Museum of Royal Worcester. It included an intricately jewelled piece from the tea service made especially for the Earl of Dudley of Witley Court as a wedding gift. We were told that a plate from the service had around 5,000 jewelled dots on it and that this equated to two weeks’ work!

Henry Sandon’s enthusiasm for Worcester porcelain was infectious as he

regaled us with tales about the painters and guilders - very appropriate for an art event in the gilded interior of this church.

Tenbury RBL at ‘GP90’ In August, members of the Tenbury Wells & District branch of The Royal British Legion joined thousands of Armed Forces veterans and supporters on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to some of World War One’s most poignant sites including battlefields, trenches and cemeteries.

This RBL event, known as the Great Pilgrimage 90 (‘GP90’), took place between the 5th and 9th of August and marked 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage of 1928, which saw 11,000 WW1 veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended.

That Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial for a ceremony to commemorate the launch of The Hundred Days Offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned.

Following the pattern set in 1928 this year’s pilgrimage culminated in a spectacular two-mile march through Ypres to the Menin Gate Memorial. It was led by 1,100 Standard Bearers, one of whom was local Legion member Edd Corfield. Fellow member Chris St Clair laid a wreath at the Menin Memorial on behalf of the Tenbury Wells community.

Chris, who is the Chairman of the Tenbury Wells Branch, said “Being part of such an historic event, representing the people of Tenbury Wells and District in commemorating those that lost their lives in the First World War, was an honour and something I will never forget.”

Bob Gamble, The Royal British Legion’s Head of Commemorative Events, said “GP90 was the Legion’s biggest membership event in

League Supports “A Life More Ordinary” The League of Friends of Ludlow Hospital has joined forces with Ludlow Assembly Rooms to provide a monthly programme of films, selected for people living with dementia, memory loss and learning difficulties. These afternoon film shows include classics such as High Society, Gigi, Oklahoma! and Mary Poppins. They are presented with low lighting, slightly reduced sound levels and in a warm, enjoyable, comfortable atmosphere for those with dementia, their carers and family.

Each performance includes a 20 minute interval with tea and cakes and carers are admitted free of charge. All performances are open to the general public at a cost of £5 a head, including refreshments.

“This initiative was a natural extension of our contributions towards care in the community” said Peter Corfield, League Chairman. “We have supported Community First Responders and funded the provision of Public Access Defibrillators in the Ludlow area, and have also invested in “MyDementia” equipment for Ludlow Hospital, all in the last year at a total cost of over £25,000. Our agreement with Ludlow Assembly Rooms is for three years at a cost of £3,000 a year which covers the cost of obtaining appropriate films for A Life More Ordinary.”

Burford Motor Show

Perfect weather meant that the grounds of Burford House were filled with people and classic vehicles of all shapes and sizes for their annual Motor Show. MG’s, Minis, a 1932 Austin 7 Box saloon, a Hillman Minx, Daimlers, a 1934 Riley Kestrel, NSU’s, a Ford Prefect and ex-USA military Jeeps were kept company by Vincent, Triumph, BSA and DKW motocycles. But the star of the show for some will have been Katie, the powder blue Austin CXB 1948 bus!

Described as “possibly the last remaining CXB with Barnard bodywork” she came to the current local owner with a well-documented history: from her delivery in 1948 to Guernsey to her continued island life transporting tourists around St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly. Apparently her straight-six 4-litre engine starts on the button every time!

Hidden Valley Camping, a small glamping and camping site in Eastham, was the winner in the ‘Best Touring, Camping & Holiday Park’ category at the Visit Worcestershire Awards for Excellence, held at Bransford on September 12th.

Hidden Valley Camping attracts hundreds of campers each year, and co-owner Simon Beverley-Smith commented “We would like to dedicate this award to my late father-in-law Peter Moseley, without whom the campsite just simply would not exist. We know this award would have made him so proud.”

MP backs Farming Ludlow MP Philip Dunne showed his support for British farming at Back British Farming Day in Westminster. The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) provided MPs with a Back British Farming wheatpin badge to display their support for the sector on the day DEFRA published the Agriculture Bill as part of its response to Brexit negotiations and the transition to a new system of support once the UK has left the EU. Farming is the bedrock of the UK’s largest manufacturing sector - food and drink - which contributes over £110 billion to the economy and employs 3.8 million people. More than a fifth of businesses registered for PAYE or VAT in Shropshire are defined as agricultural.

Mr Dunne said “I am pleased to Back British Farming and stand up for farming in Westminster. Farming plays a crucial role in the South Shropshire economy, as well as stewardship of our countryside.”

Church Tour Ludlow

Most tours of St Laurence’s Church are created for a particular organisation or society, but a general tour is to take place on Thursday 1 November. The tour costs £16 per person, including refreshments and a two-course lunch.

Led by one or more of St Laurence’s experienced guides, the event begins at 10.30am with coffee and cake.

“We will be contacting history, art and architectural groups throughout the country, inviting them to visit Ludlow and enjoy a tour of St Laurence’s, also known as ‘the Cathedral of the Marches’”, said Rosemary Wood, a member of the Church Tours’ Group.

Art at St Michael’s From 8th to 16th September, St Michael’s Church at Oldwood near Tenbury was the architecturally-stunning venue for an exhibition of work by 14 artists. This included metalwork by Claudia Petley & Paul Shepherd, and by Peter Crownshaw; woodturning by Kim Davis; comedic animal ceramic sculptures by Garry Jones; ceramics by Maggie Kingston; mixed media artists Maggie Davis, Nicola Haigh, Susie Cawley, John Brooks, Ann Wallace, Andy Cook; modern gold and silver jewellery by Georgina Franklin; and Suminagashi paper marbling by Sarah Amatt. This beautifully staged exhibition was a real treat for art lovers.

Stoke Bliss & Kyre Produce & Handicrafts We were given these words about the history of this show and the retiring organisers’ hopes for its future: “The Produce and Handicraft Show was in existence shortly after WWII when it was run by the local Women’s Institute. About 1969 the Stoke Bliss and Kyre Horticultural Society took over and ran it until the 1978 show. A two year pause followed and in 1981 a subcommittee of the Village Hall undertook to run it in the current format. The show gradually extended the range of entries from just flowers, fruit and produce to include handicrafts and baking and a children’s section.

The date, to fit in with other Produce Shows in the area, was the 4th Saturday in August. We would always request entries to be in at latest on the Wednesday prior to the show so we knew how much space to allow for the entries and also prepare the forms ready for judges to mark. However, we are usually having to juggle spaces as people brought in late entries or changed the items they had entered - the blood pressure slowly rising on the organisers’ part as this occurred!

As we were planning the 2017 show our current serving officers of Chairman (Mrs Jenny Northwood from 1981), Secretary (Mrs Maggie Kingston from 1985) and Treasurer (Mrs Gwen Brownlees from 2002) told the other members of the committee that they all felt that they could not continue and therefore were asking others to step forward.

We had realised that due to age, health or other

responsibilities we needed to step back from active involvement. Other committee members, whilst being willing to continue supporting the show did not feel able to take on the additional responsibilities of office holders.

The Show is an integral part of Stoke Bliss and Kyre village life alongside the Fete and the regular social events of the coffee morning, lunch and pub nights.

There is a willing, and gradually getting older, band of people who make these events happen and a good way of getting to know the village is to join in - it certainly makes life more interesting! So if you would like the Show to continue, either in its present form or new contact Maggie Kingston and she will willingly hand over all the details to you!

Otherwise as all things come to an end and make space for the new to move in it seems that this is the time for the committee to be disbanded or renewed. We announce this in sadness, but with hope for the future.”

Tenbury Show

Thousands of people were able to enjoy a sunny, dry and hot Show this year and once again there was more than enough to keep show-goers busy for the whole day. The Stannage Stunt Team was the headline act in the main arena, but there was plenty more to see including the Tug of War and Scurry Driving.

Other attractions included classic tractors, tractor pulling, horses, livestock (including the National Ryeland Sheep Show and the 34th National Show of Hereford Cattle), plus a massive range of stands and stalls.

Add to this everything that was happening in the marquees, including arts, crafts, the food fayre and the horticultural section, and it’s no wonder so many people were leaving the show with a smile on their face!

Art Exhibition at Burford

Ovington’s Bank

The late summer months in the Teme Valley have seen an encouraging increase in the opportunities to view and purchase original art. Village halls, churches and even the old Post Office in Tenbury have been, at various times, transformed into temporary galleries for the delectation of art lovers!

Tucked away at St Mary’s Church, Burford, was a delightfully-displayed exhibition of local artists’ work. Admission was free and refreshments and bric-a-brac were available by donation. Exhibits included a lovely detailed watercolour of Kinlet Church by John Instance (£65), a watercolour of Old Fishguard Harbour (£85) and a lovely study of Canada Geese (£40) by Richard Bell. Other picture subjects were Worcester High Street, the River Torridge at Bideford, Bluebells on the Malverns, a Forest Stream, chickens, sheep, cattle, Derwent Water, Grasmere, ‘Summer Meadow’ and ‘Spring Morning’. Here are just a few pictures to give you a taste of the art.

Not a new title, but one that has recently been published by Ludlowbased Merlin Unwin. The publisher is singularly appropriate, given that the author, Stanley Weyman (1855-1928) lived in Ludlow. Indeed, his former abode in Broad Street is only a stroll from Merlin Unwin’s base in Corve Street.

It is said that at the height of his fame Weyman was as popular as Dickens, and Ovington’s Bank is perhaps the best of his novels. The book is set in 1825 and its theme centres on the collapse of a bank, though there is much more to the book than just this, as you might expect, given it runs to over 400 pages.

Nicely printed and nicely bound, this hardback retails for £15.99.

Ludlow Art Society Summer Exhibition This was a ‘must see’ for those looking for inspiring art, with a wide variety of art on show and for sale in St Laurence’s Church! Visitors could vote for their favourite work and Carl Niblett’s Camusdarach Beach received the most votes.

We only have space for a few examples of what could be seen at the exhibition.

Orleton & District Garden Show Despite this being a gardening club show, the bakers, brewers, jam and preserve makers seemed to have been just as busy as the green-fingered members! Some of the entries were apple jam, gooseberry & elderflower jam, rhubarb & strawberry jam, medlar jelly, pickled grapes, sweet pickled cucumber, pear & walnut chutney and spiced damson chutney.

Luckily for the judges there were a good number of entries in the cider class which was won by Jane Cross with the judge’s comment ‘A bit murky, but lovely aromas and appley flavours’.

Maurice Bracher, known to many from his time working in the gardens at Burford House, judged the outdoor container, pot plants and cut flowers sections.

With a total of nine entries, a healthy number for a village show, the Victoria Sponge class was hotly contested and at only 10p entry fee per exhibit it doesn’t tax the pocket to have a go.
