Open until Sunday November 18th, this extensive exhibition at St Michael’s has around 30 displays, each of which depicts an aspect of the First World War. Almost all of this is in the church, but there is also one in the former telephone box near the village hall (seen above right).

To get the most from the numerous exhibits, be prepared to spend time following the prescribed route round the church while reading and immersing yourself in the stories, campaigns, memorabilia and images of 100 years ago.

On your travels you will meet ‘Warrior’ the Great War horse - one of the few to return home from action. You can see a rather wonderful paper ‘King George V’ in the pulpit, announcing the end of the war; the signing of the Armistice in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne in Picardy is the subject of another display.

“100 Years Ago” at St Michael’s

This “Exhibition to Commemorate the end of World War One” contains a lot of information. For example, you might discover that Kyre House, just a few miles from Tenbury, was used as a convalescent hospital for the wounded.

You can also learn about Hereford’s ‘canary girls’. They worked in the munitions factory at Rotherwas and were called ‘canary girls’ because the TNT they worked with stained their skin yellow.

However, TNT could also cause anaemia and jaundice, which would also give the body a yellow colour. Sadly, during the First World War, hundreds of cases of toxic jaundice were recorded among ammunition workers at various locations, of which perhaps 100 are thought to have been fatal.

The ‘St Michael’s Emporium’ display has a selection of clothing and fashion on show, with many of the exhibits being on loan

from Tenbury Museum’s collection. You can also marvel at the sumptuous display

by Tenbury Floral Art Club, representing ‘The Land Girls’, complete with genuine items of land girl kit.

A board describes the beginning of the Royal Air Force, while a reconstruction of a section of a battlefield with its blackened earth and war debris has a tender new silver sapling, seemingly growing from a discarded wooden gunstock, signifying ‘hope’ and ‘new life’.

An installation of several hundred paper doves made from the letters and poems of soldiers of WW1 descends from on high and you can, if you wish, leave a message or a

name on a dove on the Tree of Peace.

Plans for Orleton’s Boot Inn to become community-owned have taken a major step forward, with a purchase price having been agreed with the liquidator. The Orleton and Richards Castle Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 86% of residents believe that The Boot Inn should be protected and the Parish Council has granted ACV (Asset of Community Value) status to The Boot.

John Alderman, Chair of Orleton’s Community Benefit Society, said “Our vision to put The Boot back at the heart of our community is just a few steps away thanks to our many supporters. We have received a significant number of generous pledges from individuals and local businesses to provide financial investment.”

Bromyard Lights Switch-On Bromyard’s Christmas illuminations will once again come to life on Saturday 17th November and, for the first time in the event’s 53-year history, Santa will be bringing real live reindeer when he parades through the town.

The Switch-On is hugely popular, with events running throughout the day from 10.30am, including three separate Christmas bazaars and fairs, peals of bells, children’s fairground rides and live music. Santa’s generosity means the town’s car parks will be free of charge all day too!

Herefordshire Community Champion and lifelong Bromyard resident 80-year-old Edgar Whiteley will be Guest of Honour, throwing the Big Switch at 5pm.

Olympian visits Tenbury

Double gold medal winner Lizzy Yarnold recently visited Tenbury CE primary school. She is the most successful British

Winter Olympian and she was flag bearer for Great Britain at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the Pyeongchang opening ceremony. Headteacher Kerri Phelps gave us these words and pictures about the day.

“Everyone had an amazing day when Lizzy Yarnold, twice Olympic Champion in the Skeleton, visited our school. She gave an inspirational talk in assembly, encouraging all of us to show courage and determination and follow our dreams!

She then encouraged and motivated our pupils as each class completed sponsored fitness circuits - we are trying to raise as much money as possible to have an allweather track installed around our school field so that we can run the Daily Mile all year round. We were lucky enough to spend the whole day with Lizzy (and her two Olympic gold medals) and then gave her a flag-waving enthusiastic send-off at the end of the day! We hope that the children will cherish these very special memories for many years to come.”

Book Launch at Regal On October 18th, local resident Cliff Slade, with the help of friends, successfully launched his book, ‘Behind & Beyond the Letters’, at The Regal in Tenbury Wells. Enthusiasm for the event was such that the auditorium was packed.

The event went very well once the initial nerves wore off and Cliff relaxed.

Any suggestion that this was connected to the rapidly dropping level of what looked like a bottle of whisky would be quite improper, given that the audience was eventually told that it was actually apple juice! The audience was entertained by various anecdotes and Cliff set out some of the whys and wherefores of the book.

The title refers to Cliff’s fondness for writing letters to newspapers, and to the fact that the book looks at the man behind these letters, as well as his family, with much of the book consisting of letters, whether to newspapers, or to (or from) family members and others.

In 294 pages the text covers many aspects of his life, ranging from meeting his wife, to trying to become a County Councillor, to becoming a parent, to climbing up the professional ladder.

It’s an unusual read and it not only sheds light on various aspects of life in and around Tenbury Wells, it also tells us more about the man than many would want to see in a book that’s published while they’re still alive!

WW1 Commemoration

A number of events have been organised for Tenbury and St Michael’s in the period running up to Remembrance Sunday, to remind us of the tremendous sacrifice made by those who served in our Armed Forces during World War 1.

These include: Thursday 8th November: A Plot of Remembrance, containing 152 small wooden crosses, each inscribed with the name of one of the Fallen from Tenbury Wells and District, will be established in St Mary’s churchyard during the week leading up to Remembrance, and a short service will be held there at 10.50 to 11 am on Thursday 8th November.

The ceremony will include the sounding of the Last Post, the two minute silence, and sounding of Reveille, all to coincide with the much larger national ceremony taking place at the Field of Remembrance, Westminster Abbey at 11am that day.

The pupils of Tenbury High will inscribe the 152 crosses and perhaps even plant them in the plot. The crosses, including a larger wooden cross for the head of the plot, will be provided by the RBL, and the RBL Choir will sing a few of the old and well-loved WW1 songs after the ceremony.

It is hoped that any family members of WW1 Fallen, or those who served in the Great War will be able to attend, together with other members of the public who may wish to pay their respects.

The names of the 152 Fallen from Tenbury Wells & District are those appearing on the War Memorials of St Mary’s Tenbury, St Michael’s Tenbury, St Michael’s Bockleton, Boraston Church, St Mary’s Burford, St Peter & St Paul’s Eastham, Oreleton & Hanley William, St James’ Greete, St Michael’s Knighton-onTeme, St Mary’s Kyre, St Peter’s Stoke Bliss, St Andrew’s Leysters, St Lawrence’s Lindridge, St Mary Magdalene Little Hereford, St Michael’s Rochford and St Mary’s Whitton. Anyone from these Parishes with connections to the WW1 Fallen would be most welcome to attend.

Remembrance Sunday 11th November: People in the vicinity of St Mary’s Church should be aware that, as well as the Remembrance Parade and Service, the day that marks the end of the war will start with the sounding of the Last Post at the War Memorial at 6 am on Remembrance Sunday. This will be happening at cathedrals and churches throughout Britain, the Commonwealth and many countries of the world. 6am: Battle’s Over Sleep in peace now the battle’s over.

Table Tennis Club

Little Hereford Table Tennis club has passed its first anniversary! Started in summer 2017 by Janine King and Wendy White, the club has rapidly grown to over 20 members, at various levels from beginner to advanced. The Club meets in Little Hereford Village Hall, every Thursday morning from 10am to 12.30. It runs for 50 weeks of the year, with a break at Christmas. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided and there is no joining fee - it’s just £3 per person, per week.

A spokesman commented that if you play, or maybe if you would like to learn to play, you could ‘Come along and be a part of a great group of people, we are always on the look-out for new members. We have a laugh, feel fitter and benefit from the social atmosphere in the kitchen where the world is quite often put to rights! The following events will also take place at St Mary’s: 6.30 to 7pm: A candlelit vigil. 6.55pm: Battle’s Over - The Last Post. 7.05pm: Battle’s Over - Ringing out for peace! The church bells will ring out in celebration, as they did 100 years ago.

Macmillan Success

Val Smith told us that “The Macmillan Coffee morning at Nash & Boraston Parish Hall on Friday 28th September 2018 was a fantastic success, raising £660 for this very worthwhile charity. A BIG thank you to all the generous people who supported the event, that support coming in many forms: time, baking, buying of cake and coffee, entering the raffle, guessing the weight of the cake and many donations. It was great fun”. Pat Deeley, the principal organiser said “I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends and neighbours who have given so much, to such an excellent cause.”

Remembrance Garden In October, work started on a Remembrance Garden area in Tenbury’s Civic Garden, which located by the tennis courts. There is a planned Service of Dedication on 11th November at 12.15pm following the town’s main Service of Remembrance and parade. The Service of Dedication will be led

by Rev. Mark Inglis and the Mayor, Cllr. Sue Perry.

The pictures show the memorial benches and ‘silent soldier’ partway through the construction.

2018 is the 250th Anniversary of the invention of circus entertainment.

Along with his wife, war hero and trickrider Phillip Astley roped off a Ring in an open field in Lambeth, London, near today’s Waterloo Station, and performed astounding displays of equestrian expertise. Building on their early success, the couple added a clown, rope-walkers and acrobats - the circus was born!

Bromyard actor Chris Barltrop has worked as a ringmaster around the world for over 40 years, appearing in two Royal Variety Performances and spending seven years on tour in the UK with the Moscow State Circus. To help celebrate Phillip Astley’s legacy, Chris wrote ‘Audacious Mr Astley’, a one-man play in which “Astley” tells the story of how circus came to be. The play, which runs for 45 minutes, gained a five-star rating at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Chris Barltrop is putting on two performances locally.

On Saturday 10th November, in the Falcon Mews, Bromyard, the evening starts with a two-course buffet supper. Chris commented “Best to book in advance - the food is always great at the Falcon! Arrive at 7pm for supper at 7.30pm. Event ends before 11pm.” Tickets £10 per person (including supper) from the Falcon reception desk, or ring them on 01885 483034.

Showing Off in Ludlow!

In October, the Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft presented its two day exhibition of members’ work in the Beacon Rooms at Ludlow Castle, giving visitors an opportunity to be inspired by the quality of work on offer and maybe find a unique gift for the coming season. There was certainly plenty of choice and even if you didn’t buy, just browsing this annual showcase was a real treat!

Bra Bank in Tenbury The cancer charity againstbreastcancer.org.uk has developed a Bra Bank scheme so that rather than sending bras to landfill they can be placed in a local bra bank. Their scheme takes unwanted bras through their network of bra banks and raises funds for pioneering breast cancer research. For every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund research.

The bras themselves are then sent to women in Kenya, Toga and Ghana. Bras that are beyond redemption are dismantled and disposed of properly. The photo shows Jackie from Tabs (left), Louise from Harlequin Gifts (right) and Carole of Smarty Pants, who has a Bra Bank in her shop in Tenbury.

Town Band update Every two years Tenbury Town Band is invited to play at The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. This year the parade was to commemorate 100 years since the end of WWI and the Battle of St Quentin. Thankfully after a turbulent week of weather, it stayed dry throughout the parade and for the drumhead service. Afterwards the band played while the participants enjoyed a picnic.

The Fete season is normally a busy time for the band, however this year seems to have been especially busy! The first fete of the season was Bockleton Church Fete, where it poured down with rain and the lightning circled around. But as the band started playing the clouds cleared and it brightened up to a fine afternoon.

The next week was a baking hot day at Worcester Rugby Club for the Mercian Regiment Reunion: hard to believe they were only a week apart!

At the end of June the band led The Civic Parade in Tenbury to welcome the new Mayor, Sue Perry. Playing the hymns in church and parading back through the town certainly showed the versatility of the band.

Leominster Priory and Knighton on Teme Fetes continued to enjoy the lovely summer weather and brought lots of people out to enjoy the stalls and music. Shrewsbury Bandstand welcomed the band once again for an afternoon playing in Quarry Park.

Next came Burford Church Fete, at Burford House and Gardens.

featofclayceramics With lots of stalls plus tea and cake in the gardens, it was an idyllic English summer Fete.

As school term finished it was straight into Wessex Workshop Week for many of the band: a week of playing music, with lessons from amazing tutors, culminating in a massed concert with over 200 musicians.

The last few fetes of the season were Little Hereford, Eastham and St Michaels. These events are so different it makes for an interesting summer to be able to play a variety of music and get the feet tapping in and around Tenbury.

Undaunted by prospects of a nodeal Brexit, Tenbury French Twinning Association has announced plans for its next exchange trip to the town of Pontdu-Casse in southern France. Chair of the Twinning Association Liz Weston (left in photo) and Tenbury’s Mayor Cllr Sue Perry (right in photo) promoted the delights of twinning at Tenbury’s recent Applefest.

Open to anyone from the Tenbury area, young or old, the group will arrive in Pont-du-Casse on Friday 16th August and depart on Monday 19th August 2019. Liz commented “This is the preferred weekend for the Tenbury Town Band and, being in the Summer holidays, may encourage young families to join us. I have received a letter from the head of Pont-du-Casse twinning committee saying they are all very excited and are already planning for our visit.”

Exchanges between the two towns take place every other year, alternating between Tenbury residents, often accompanied by the Tenbury Town Band, visiting Pont-du-Casse, and vice versa.

Mrs Weston made the announcement on Friday 19th October at a fundraising dinner and social evening at the Green Meal café, St Michael’s (see photo). This drew around 40 guests, many of whom had made previous trips to the French town and hosted visitors from it during the 38 years since the twinning was formally established. The evening featured soup, a cold buffet and an assortment of homemade desserts, followed by a quiz on the theme “Adieu, Europe”.

The association plans a further three-course fundraising lunch in St Michael’s Village Hall on Sunday 3rd March 2019, to which all are welcome.

The weather wasn’t kind to Tenbury’s Applefest this year, but the persistent rain from early morning set-up through to mid-afternoon, plus a cold breeze, didn’t dampen the professionalism of the organisers or stall holders. They carried on doing their best to provide a day of activities dedicated to the apple and things autumnal.

A good mix of live entertainment, apple displays, country crafts, foods, ciders, perries, gins, art, lavish bakery and local charity stalls meant it was easy to spend a few hours browsing the stands, watching the various performances and trying a few of the activities.

On the Tenbury Museum stand you could have fun guessing the use of a variety of objects from the museum’s collection, with some evident head scratching involved. In the WW100 bell tent you could learn about rationing in the Great War and farming in 1918.

On the corn dolly stand you were invited to make your own harvest knot (with help) for £1 and you could see the original, intricately woven, Thornbury Lace straw hat, now about 85 years old.

Many apple juices, of different varieties, were available to sample but the hand-pressed organic Rubinola juice from Mr Berrington’s tasted just like apple pie: a fresh apple flavour and rich tea biscuit finish!

In the Frank P Matthews Apple Marquee, many visitors took the opportunity to photograph some of the hundreds of apple varieties on display in the hope of identifying their own apples; others quizzed the Marcher Apple Network experts about the origin of their fruit, and others brought apples to be made into juice by Appleteme. This was a very applecentric marquee!

Out amongst the stalls, Ragged Stone hastily created a sign encouraging people to ‘Forget about the Rain and have some CIDER’ and Brockleby’s Pies declared that ‘A balanced diet is a pie in each hand’!

If you wanted something warming to set off the cold there was hot mulled cider, hot apple juice and damson or apple and cinnamon and a most excellent apple, broccoli and stilton soup for £1 from the Tenbury Scouts stand. Further tempting warming snacks included brownies with a hot chocolate sauce from Sophia’s Sweet Treats.

The Leominster Morris provided their usual dash of colour and spectacle and, in the stage marquee, Bandemonium brought a splendidly rousing musical finish to the day as the sun finally began to shine!

Worcestershire WIs On Tuesday 16th October, the Annual Council Meeting of the Worcestershire Federation of WI’s celebrated the exciting events that have been happening in the WI centenary year in Worcestershire, proving once again that the WI isn’t just Jam and Jerusalem!

An address was given by Susan Stone, Chairwoman, followed by Lynne Stebbings, the National Chairwoman. Lynne reminded listeners that the WI was started in Canada when a young woman lost her baby because of lack of knowledge and hygiene. From its inception, the WI wanted to help women have better life skills and education.

Nor have they ever shirked controversial issues; the WI was one of the first

organisations to talk about AIDS; They have run campaigns against nuclear waste, child abuse, the trafficking of women and, this year have debated and highlighted the treatment of mental health.

Erin Boag, from Strictly Come Dancing, gave a very enjoyable and entertaining talk in the afternoon.

Throughout the day there were many stands and displays to look at, and the entries in the Glamour and Glitz competition demonstrated the variety of the skills taught through the WI. Potato Competition

Lindridge school pupils Lottie Pearce-Bourne and Theony Packard, winners the of potato Growing Competition at Eastham Fete and Flower Show, were presented with the coveted Downes Cup and - courtesy of Tenbury Fish Bar & Restaurant - vouchers for Kids Meal Specials. Their winning crop weighed 450grams. The photo, by Keith Gluyas, shows the winners with competition organisers Nicky Webb and Alison Neary.

Remembrance has gathered momentum this year as the centenary of the end of World War 1 falls in 2018 and many and varied services and events are happening around the Teme Valley.

In Ludlow, as a tribute to those who gave their lives during WW1, a beacon will be lit at Gallows Bank, SY8 1LU at 7pm on November 11th, as others are lit across the UK. A roll call of Ludlovians who died in the Great War will be read after the beacon is lit. Church bells are scheduled to ring from 7.05 to 7.30pm and Ludlow Male Voice Choir will sing after the roll call. Refreshments will be served at Rockspring Community Centre from 7.30 8.30pm.

There is a silent soldier installed on Whitcliffe, overlooking the town, while Rickards ironmongers in the town centre has created a striking remembrance window, as seen in the photo.

Cleobury Mortimer Running Club

This club started when a small group of friends wanted to go running together. Now in its 3rd year, the Club earned a win in England Athletics’ Volunteer Awards 2018, in the ‘Athletics or Running Club of the Year’ category.

This year has also seen other successes and personal bests, including a group of around 20 runners representing the club in the Spitfire 10k at RAF Cosford. Club chair and coach Jo Watson was first lady home, with the men’s team gaining 1st place Male Team. Club Runner of the Year 2017, Gillian BarkerBell, age 73, ran the Great North Run for the second time and knocked a massive 10 minutes off her time last year.

Vice Chair Ian Steele commented that the club “... has come such a long way in the past three years; an idea and eight of us has grown to 108 with another beginners course starting soon.

Every member volunteered to help at our inaugural 10k, rather than run in it. The event was a phenomenal experience for the whole town. It’s a real all-club effort, everyone’s supportive of each other and everyone’s a winner!”

Clee Hill Remembrance Clee Hill & District RBL invites all to join them to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1 with a special programme of events.

At 2.30pm on Saturday 10th November, a Grand Parade will assemble at the Vic car park ready to parade through the village at 3pm with Tenbury Town marching band. The route will take in the Silent Soldier at the Three Crosses (where ‘The Last Post’ will be played) then down to Clee Hill School for tea and cake. WW1 or poppy-themed dress encouraged! Then from 5-7pm a Silent Vigil will be held at St Peters Church, Clee Hill, which will be decorated with poppies.

On Sunday 11th, St Peters will be open all day for people to bring along a paper poppy to ‘plant’ in memory to those who lost their lives in WW1 - please do write a loved one’s name on it if you’d like to. At 6.30pm the weekend closes with a moving Festival of Remembrance at St Peters: all invited.

Autumn Show The Tenbury Agricutural Society’s Autumn Show took place on Friday October 19th. As usual, it was held at Penlu Sports Club in Burford. It is particularly noted for the hops, apples and pears that are on show, but grain, roots, cider and more can also be seen and one of the high points is the auction of the show’s exhibits by local estate agent and auctioneer Nick Champion.

This relaxed event is also a good opportunity for a chat with friends, perhaps over a pint and some bread and cheese. We were told that this year’s was the 50th Autumn Show, which is something of a milestone!

Saturday 27th October was the end of an era, with the dispersal sale of John Sinnett’s pedigree Suffolk operation taking place on the farm at Stockton-on-Teme, ending 45 years of breeding.

Sinnett’s history includes five National Flock competition wins.

Trade was topped by two ram lambs of Birness and Cairness breeding, each at 10,000gns. Averages: 82 aged ewes, £1,041.04; 55 shearling gimmers, £1,030.91; 54 ewe lambs, £1,366.94; two ewes and lambs, £5,565; four rams, £6,300.
