Bowketts Sold? In January, the agents told us that Bowketts supermarket in Tenbury Wells was on the market at a guide price of £850,000. In February we received the following statement from Bowketts: “We are pleased to announce that Bowkett’s has sold - Subject to Contract. The prospective buyers, who are experienced retailers, have confirmed that they wish to continue with the business including the Nisa Store, Bowkett’s Butchery & Bowkett’s Catering and the Post Office as it is.” The Bowkett family have been in retail in Tenbury Wells for over 100 years so the sale of Bowketts would, in a sense, be the end of an era. However, the expectation that the new owners would continue the business means that loyal customers should still be able to buy Bowketts products, including the highly-valued sausages! In addition, it is expected that the existing staff will be able to stay on, which will be a great relief for a good many local residents. The fact that a buyer came forward so quickly indicates that Tenbury is seen as an attractive place to do business, which bodes well for the town’s future.
The Boot at Orleton The historic black-and-white Boot Inn at Orleton closed some time ago but its future should now be secure as it has been purchased by a Community Benefit Society, which also means that Herefordshire has another community-owned pub. John Alderman, who chairs the Society, commented “We have received invaluable support from so many individuals and organisations without whom our vision to return the Boot to its former glory and indeed to turn it into ‘More than a Pub’ could not have been achieved. The ‘new’ Boot could include a daytime cafe with free WiFi, a meeting place for special interest groups, a venue for festivals and whatever else supports our community.” He added that “Special mention must go to all our investors whose belief in the project and generosity exceeded our expectations. The scheme to buy shares in the project is still open to any individuals who have missed out and the more invested the less we have to borrow to complete the refurbishment.” The first part of the project is to protect the buildings against any further damage and immediate priorities include repairing the roof, replacing windows and shoring up the listed ‘single cell building’ behind the pub. Reputed to be the smallest dwelling in Herefordshire, this was occupied until about 50 years ago. The aim is to be ready to open for business sometime during the summer but before then there will be the task of finding and appointing a tenant to manage the business, as well as refurbishing the pub. John Alderman added “We also need a big clean-up operation to clear and tidy the site and property and are planning a fun weekend, hoping for lots of volunteers!”

Members of the public are welcome to drop in at Tenbury’s Round Market on Friday 8th March, from 2pm, when members of the Teme Valley Apple Group will be grafting some of the rarest apples from the Tenbury area. Historic varieties such as Witney’s Kernel, Jones’ Seedling, Haughty’s Red and Dewdulip Seedling all but disappeared from the Teme Valley, reduced in some cases to the last one or two trees. The group will be grafting up a number of each variety so as to help ensure their conservation into the future. It is hoped that in a couple of years’ time some of them could be planted out in the town, so re-establishing their historic link with Tenbury - ‘The Little Town in the Orchard’. The Teme Valley Apple group was founded 10 years ago by the late Reg Farmer. It has gone on to do much valuable detective work, finding and recording the local varieties of the Teme Valley.

Clifton Scouts Scouting is officially back in Clifton Upon Teme after an investiture evening for the 1st Clifton Scout Group on Tuesday 12th February in Clifton Village Hall. Group Scout Leader Deb Haywood said it was a great night with 43 new members, adults and children, being invested into the troop. Deb added “We could never have dreamed of the response we have had and the support from the village and especially the Village Hall trustees in allowing us to meet there. We have massive plans for the future with loads of fun, excitement and laughter ahead.”
