£4,000 for All-Weather Track Kerri Phelps, Headteacher at Tenbury Primary, recently told us “You may remember that back in October, we had Lizzy Yarnold, Olympic Champion, visit school for the day to kick start our fundraising this year for an all-weather track around the school field, so that our pupils can run the daily mile all year round.

“We had the brilliant news today that we won the Tesco fundraising bid (where three charitable causes have buckets in Tesco and customers put tokens in to the fundraiser of

their choice) and therefore have been given the top donation of £4000.

“Two representatives from Tesco came into school today to present a large cheque to myself as Headteacher, Jason Griffiths, our PE & Sport Co-ordinator, and two of our pupils, who are keen runners. (See attached photo).

“We are now well on the way to achieving our fundraising goal by the end of this term, with our PTFA busy raising money through our school fete on 14th June and other events.”

Plant Sale The car park was packed at Kyre & Stoke Bliss Village Hall on April 27th as people flocked to an afternoon plant sale. It was a case of the early bird catching the best bargains, with the large tables in the hall soon looking seriously depleted as tray upon tray of plants were carried out to waiting car boots.

Sunflowers were 50p, grasses and hostas £4, small perennials £2, large freshly-dug clumps of asters £4, succulents £3 per pot and there was a good choice of tomato plants including Roma, Red Alet, Sungold, Golden Sunrise, Marmande and Country Taste.

Home-made jams, jellies, home-grown rhubarb and handcrafted bags plus vegetable plants (aubergines, peas, beans, artichoke) could also be found.

Before departing for a spell of plantingout in the garden at home, many people delayed departure to enjoy home-made refreshments and have a chat, and catch-up with friends!

Living Well with Dementia

by Ria Baxter, of Kyrebrook Daycare Centre Dementia is caused by a number of diseases that affect the brain. The most common is Alzheimer’s but diseases also include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy Bodies and Pick’s disease.

Different types of dementia affect the brain at different rates and in different ways, but other things like someone’s personal circumstances, the people around them and the environment in which they live will affect their experience of dementia. Dementia progresses in a way that is unique to each individual.

The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problemsolving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.

It is true that more people over 65 have dementia but it is not exclusively an older person’s disease; younger people get dementia too. One of the most successful ways of living well with dementia is ensuring that the right support is in place.

This can include domiciliary care to help with tasks like washing and dressing, making sure medication is taken, preparing meals, and ensuring that people living with dementia can continue to live safely at home. There are also other support organisations such as Alzheimer’s Society, Admiral Nurses, Carer’s Association and Mental Health teams.

Day care is a great way of keeping people living with dementia active and engaging them in activities that are person centred, sociable and fun. It offers not just care to the clients who attend, but also to their families and carers, who can have respite from the day to day care of their loved ones, knowing that they are in a safe place, giving them time to get on with their day and things that they might not otherwise be able to do.

One of Tenbury’s most recognisable residents is George Baker.

George has lived in the Tenbury area for nearly 50 years, and is well known by many people in the town, having worked in a lot of local businesses over his working life.

George lives with Alzheimer’s disease and this mostly affects his short-term memory. Simple tasks can be greatly affected. Try to imagine how difficult it is if you have no short-term memory to remember what you are supposed to be doing. It’s all very well to say write things down, but if you forget where you’ve put your notes, it’s hard to deal with day to day responsibilities.

Even things like taking the same journey on foot every day can be disrupted by something as simple as a pavement being closed and a diversion taking the pedestrian just across the road, which can confuse a person living with dementia and send them in a completely different direction, resulting in them getting lost right on their doorstep.

George is fortunate to have a package of care that ensures that he is kept safe both in his home and during the day. He attends Kyrebrook Daycare Centre 5 days a week, which gives him the social interaction that he loves. His favourite activities are singing, colouring, playing skittles and dominoes, but he is always happy to try something new and different.

Keeping in touch with local life is also important, so he enjoys trips out in the minibus, particularly to Kyre Village Hall for the

monthly lunch, St Michael’s Village Hall for the monthly coffee morning and local tea rooms and pubs.

George also enjoys nutritious food, as the day centre serves a two-course meal provided from a local business in town (Number 6 cafe). It is important that George’s diet is monitored to control his diabetes, so nutritious meals that are served by his home carers are prepared locally by a nutritionist, all arranged by Kyrebrook.

George’s daughter is a great supporter of what Kyrebrook does for her Dad, and said, “I don’t know what I would do without Kyrebrook Daycare centre. My Dad loves it there and if it was open every day he would be there. All the staff are wonderful and Ria is such a valued member of staff that she goes out of her way to help not only the people who go there, but their families too. I couldn’t recommend the day centre highly enough in what they do.”

Ria Baxter, Manager of Kyrebrook, said, “It’s really important that all of our clients at Kyrebrook are supported like George. Families are often dispersed around the country, so are not on hand to deal with day to day issues, so some clients need more help than others if they are living alone. This can include ensuring that they get to their medical appointments, as well as the bank, help with correspondence, or getting shopping arranged.

“It’s also very important to ensure that our clients are receiving

the right benefits and social care support, so I will often do benefits checks or speak with social services to increase the level of support that our clients need outside the centre. All of these services are part of the package of care that we offer our clients.

“I recently identified an additional £600 of benefits income per month for a married couple who were paying to attend a day centre one day a week, which also resulted in more day care attendance funded by their local council.

“Another lady seeking day care for her husband was not aware of benefits she was entitled to, and we are currently pursuing a claim for up to £182 additional benefits per week. I am happy to help people not attending the day centre to see if they are entitled to more help, but this would be a chargeable service.

“Unfortunately, despite everything supposedly being transparent and assuming that the government would automatically know that certain people are entitled to financial support such as Attendance Allowance, it is an absolute minefield trying to navigate things like benefits and allowances that people are entitled to, even for someone with a good understanding. People living with dementia or elderly people who aren’t computer literate have no chance.”
