Christmas Lights and Shop Windows This time of year, with the nights drawing-in, provides a perfect foil for the many and varied Christmas light displays and decorated shop windows as they shine out and dispel the gloom.

We are lucky to have such excellent displays in our local towns and you don’t even have to stop up late to appreciate them as darkness comes so early these days.

Many of our local businesses and traders work hard to make things look attractive at this time

of year. Shopping late in the day can be quite a magical experience with the shops and their windows lit up! So just because it’s dark outside, you don’t have to stay inside - why not venture out and take a look?

The Christmas Lights vary a lot too, with Tenbury and Ludlow going for twinkly lights, while in Bromyard you might see a train puffing along, a cracker exploding - or even snowmen throwing a snowball to each other!

Children in Need Rickshaw

There must have been people doing a double take when the bright yellow BBC ‘Children in Need’ rickshaw made its way through Worcestershire. It even took in the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb course! In the photo we can see the rickshaw as it crossed the A456 at Clows Top.

Burford Christmas Tree Festival This delightful event was held over the weekend of 8th/9th December. Several local enterprises let their creativity run wild and took a spot in the church to construct and decorate a ‘tree’. Visitors could indicate their favourite tree by dropping a donation into the appropriate jam jar.

Nomark had some gold-sprayed spark plugs as decorations; Salvaged used an old pallet as the ‘canvas’ for their tree: Tabs Tearoom had a large intricately-designed collage tree using teabags, paper doilies, straws, wooden forks, knives and spoons and a teapot as the ‘star’ - from the spout of which flowed the words ‘Everything stops for Tea at Tabs’.

Northwick House used old plastic bottles and white tissue paper to wonderful effect. Tenbury Hospital went for a pompom look. Travel Trail adorned their tree with flags of the world.

Burford House used traditional colours of red, green and gold. The Salon used brushes, rolled flannels, curlers and hair products to good effect.

Burford CofE primary school decorated their tree with Happy New Year cards, to be distributed

by Sovereign Care into the community. Smarty Pants created a dress with the decorated tree as its skirt - quite ingenious. The other trees plus preserves, art, tombola, Christmas music and refreshments including mulled wine and mince pies all helped make this a lovely festive event.

More Jobs for Tenbury After 20 years without any business units being erected on Tenbury’s Bromyard Road Business Park, there finally looks to be real progress as construction work is now underway. Recent times have seen a useful upsurge in interest from businesses and a number of planning applications have already been approved. If these all come to fruition, it is expected that there will be a significant increase in the number of jobs based on the Park.

Councillor Chris Dell, who represents Lindridge on Malvern Hills District Council, commented “A few years ago I asked Phil Grove, who was Leader of the Council at that time, how the Council could encourage development and promote employment on this Business Park. Phil suggested that it should be made a priority for the Council and the 2016-2021 ‘Five Year Plan’ contains a commitment to ‘Achieve new business and promote employment investment at Tenbury Business Park’. I am grateful to Phil for

taking forward this important matter and I look forward to the new business units opening.”

Caynham Festival of Christmas Trees This was a very educational Christmas Tree festival. The theme for this year was Christmas Poems and local families had chosen a poem and then decorated a tree appropriately.

In the first instance, the event introduced you to a wide variety of poetry - from popular Christmas verses such as ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ (tree by Cath Corfield) to a Spike Milligan 4-liner Chris King suggested the idea of a festival of Christmas trees ‘Christmas 1970’ (tree by Jenny Daniel with Jessica, Emily and Phoebe). There was also Benjamin Zephania’s ‘Be nice to yu turkeys dis Christmas’ (tree by Jane and Peter Van Duyvenvoorde) with some very vibrantly coloured turkey decorations!

The education continued with ornithologists Jean and David Faulkner’s tree. They used the poem ‘The North wind doth blow’ and decorated the tree with snowflakes each of which displayed a fact about Robins - such as ‘both sexes aggressively defend their territory’ so you could learn a lot from reading the many decorations!

Other poems and trees included ‘The Holly Tree’ (Betty Perks), ‘Love came down at Christmas’ (Pam Murray) and ‘The Littlest Christmas Tree’ (The Lawrence family). You learnt that ‘Our Nativity Play’ poem was written by local poet Eric Finney, a much loved head teacher of Clee View Junior School who retired to live in Caynham. Ludlow Hospital Update Peter Corfield, chairman of The League of Friends of Ludlow Hospital, kindly gave us this update on the continued work of the Friends.

“The League has for some time been pressing for our x-ray facility to be upgraded, and despite some delays in the preparatory building work due to stalled lease negotiations between Shropshire Community Health Trust (Shropcom) and NHS Property Services, work is at long-last complete.

“The League has purchased at a cost of £158,000 the new high definition equipment which became operational in the first week of October.

The building works have been funded by the NHS (at a cost of £147,000). This new equipment further reduces the need for patients at Ludlow to be referred to Shrewsbury, Telford or Hereford and enables a wider range of outpatient clinics to be held locally.

“We have also purchased a ‘Digital Reminiscence Therapy Software Package’ and associated computer equipment to the value of £6170 for use on Dinham Ward. The system has special games and films for patients with dementia which enables families to make “All about Me” books for palliative care. The system is interactive and has music and films suitable for all patients, and is enabling ‘Sing Along’ sessions where appropriate.

“We are very grateful for two recent local fundraisers. Kelly Hatfield, who owns ‘Inspired by Beauty’ based in the Nail Gallery, Corve Street, Ludlow donated the proceeds of a promotional event and Svana Ingram, manager of Mistral in King Street Ludlow, following a very successful Fashion Show in October, held a second fashion and makeover event in early December.

“Our website is nearing completion and Michael Evans and Linda Binns have been busy with the site developer to fine tune everything ready for a launch before the year end. We have been joined

by David Clent who will be ensuring that the site is up-to-date.”

Tenbury Mistletoe Festival This year’s festival saw various events take place around the town. A large set of lips made from mistletoe and outlined with red ribbons and fairy lights greeted visitors to the town if they travelled over the Teme Bridge into Tenbury.

There were two craft markets - one in the Pump Rooms and another in the Round Market. Leominster Morris performed three times during the day and an excellent choir - Men In Harmony - delighted crowds with two performances of a medley of festive and folk songs, in aid of the West Midlands Air Ambulance.

The Mistletoe Queen was crowned outside The Regal and there were storytelling and craft workshops for the youngsters in the library. The day culminated in the Santa Parade, organised by Tenbury Chamber of Trade. Santa travelled along Teme Street and Market Street and up to the church where youngsters could visit him in his grotto.

Little Hereford Christmas Fair This event was exactly as described: a Christmas Fair and a very busy and vibrant one at that! The village hall filled up soon after opening. You had the opportunity to find some early Christmas presents among the top quality bric-a-brac including a couple of very smartly-dressed Harrods’ Teddy bears!

Locally-made Christmas cards, cakes and crafts made for convenient Christmas shopping. Tea or coffee and biscuits were free, but many enjoyed a mince pie (50p) with their drink and the tables and chairs were soon full with people chatting.

The tombola was cleared in no time and the generous hamper draw had people reaching for another pound or two, helping the fundraising.

Seasonal wreaths made from pheasant feathers and accompanying feather-covered baubles were some of the more unusual offerings on sale.

There was an incredibly varied selection of home preserves and confections including festive chocolate fudge adorned with golden stars, locally-harvested walnuts, spiced mulberry jelly, pear & lemon jam, rosemary jelly, festive sugar plums, plum ketchup, chocolate stirrers (40p), hot green pepper jelly and rhubarb & date chutney.

Pots of seasonal herbs (£3), Brimfield apple cakes, apricot & almond layer cakes, scones, muffins and nicely-boxed home-made mince pies all encouraged a purchase. It seemed almost impossible to leave this lively and friendly event empty-handed!

Ludlow Farmshop The rebranded Ludlow Food Centre opened its doors as a new-look farm shop this autumn and a new ‘Ludlow Farmshop’ logo is prominent on the store and on their packaging.

Jon Edwards, Managing Director of Ludlow Food Centre, commented “One of the challenges we have is communicating with our customers about how we procure and create our products using produce reared or grown on our farms, which extend to some 8,000 acres surrounding the Farmshop.”

General Manager Paul Hill added “As we

produce the majority of what we sell, we can guarantee quality throughout the whole journey from farm to shop and we think it is important that our customers can see this open production as well as touch, taste and smell the produce on offer. As such we have reinstated windows into the production areas that have previously been hidden by displays.”

Chairman, David Windsor-Clive, a member of the family that owns the Farmshop, is pictured officially cutting the ribbon to open the rebranded store, assisted by Jon Edwards.

a fantastic day, enjoyed by all.

The stalls were really excellent, the food was delicious, the sun shone and over £2,000 was raised to support the local Stroke Group. This money is really crucial

to funding the Stroke Group’s activities. The group meets each fortnight on Tuesday from 10am12pm in Astley Village Hall and anyone who has survived a stroke

Linking in with the town’s WWI commemorations, members of Tenbury Wells WI, which started in 1922, staged a display in the town’s library window to highlight the part that women played in the conflict and on the Home Front.

Using artefacts lent by members and images from publications, the display was enhanced by the now familiar knitted poppies that members had been producing for several months. Many of these were also sold by members of the British Legion as part of the poppy appeal.

Tenbury WI meetings are held at 2.15pm on the second Monday of the month at the Methodist Hall in Cross Street. Visitors are welcome.

Festive Coffee Morning St Mary’s Church in Tenbury held a festive coffee morning on November 24th. It certainly helped get people in the mood for Christmas as gifts galore, coffee and mince pies or toasted teacakes were in plentiful supply. Many were airing their Christmas

drizzle or almond and cherry cake (20p), home-made plaited loaves (£3), packs of 6 chocolate brownies (£1), marrow and apple chutneys, jams, Christmas preserves and fresh flower arrangements, all beautifully laid out, encouraging many to take home a festive purchase.

You could buy a humorous book, ‘50 ways to

jumpers for the first time this year - indeed there was an opportunity to win a pair of matching Rudolph jumpers in a raffle!

Fresh home-made produce was in abundance, with large apple pies (£1.50), slices of lemon

kill a slug’ (£1), or a copy of ‘The Gardeners Quiz & Puzzle Book’ (£3) - both in pristine condition. There were mini stockings with a chocolate santa lolly inside for 50p, cushions (£3), fabric wreaths (£6.50) and a selection of generous prizes in the draw. And with some excellent hampers to be won it was difficult not to join in the festivities and fundraising.

Open Studio at Greenacres Ann Wallace opened her studio workshop over two weekends in the run up to Christmas, with lots of handcrafted gift ideas on display from local artists, including some of her own work. The studio, in Berrington, just outside Tenbury Wells, was easy to find and a large Christmas Stocking hanging on a door handle indicated the way in.

Inside you were spoilt for choice; knitted goods from the Woolpack Knitters of Leysters, pen and ink animal studies, watercolours, large and small felt sculptures of animals, hand-made Christmas decorations, stained glass work, cards, crochet hot water bottle covers, glassware, pegloom-woven Ryeland wool rugs, glass brooches and pendants, a Christmas Santa jacket for a baby, rustic pottery and a lot more. An hour could have easily been spent browsing and finding that special gift.

Councillor supports Memorial Bench

Poppy Cascades It started at the Tower of London in 2014 when a public art installation ‘Blood swept Lands and Seas of Red’ was created in the moat between July and November. It commemorated the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 and consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The work’s title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown WW1 soldier. The poppies were individually handmade and a team of about 17,500 volunteers put them in place, making it a true public artwork. Members of the public could pre-order a poppy for £25, with a share of the proceeds (estimated at more than £15 million) going to six service charities.

Parish residents Ian and Emma Mapp along with Duane Hubbard had the shared idea that they wanted to do something in Knighton On Teme to mark and commemorate the 100 years from the end of the First World War. Following discussions, it has been decided a ‘Forces Memorial Bench’, to commemorate all the soldiers who have fallen in conflict over the last 100 years, should be placed at the side of the lane near Knighton on Teme Church.

A fundraising Quiz, to help fund the project, is to be held at The Talbot Inn in Newnham Bridge on December 17th at 7.30pm; the cost of £5 a head includes a light supper.

Local Councillor Chris Dell commented “I am delighted to be able to support this initiative, in my position as the local Malvern Hills District Councillor, by making a grant from my Ward Budget. I will also be making a personal donation. The location is ideal. Not only is it near the Church, it is also in a tranquil location and it has an excellent view. It will be a good place to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations. My father and father-in-law were both in the RAF, one of my grandfathers was in the Navy, and the other worked in a shipyard, so I can fully appreciate why people would want to mark this anniversary.”

Tenbury RBL update Jim Keating of Tenbury Royal British Legion let us have the following information.

Plot of Remembrance.

The photo shows Amelie Lloyd, Sophia Turner-Hammond and Tilly Sheppard (Year 8 pupils at Tenbury High) helping to create a Plot of Remembrance at St Mary’s Church in Tenbury. The finished plot contained 152 poppy crosses, each inscribed by pupils from Tenbury High with the name of one of the World War One Fallen from Tenbury and District. This ceremony mirrored the Field of Remembrance ceremony which took place at Westminster Abbey. At 11am, two minutes silence, in memory of the Fallen, took place.

There was a good turnout of spectators and relatives from the families of the Fallen.

Cleobury Farmers Market

This increasingly popular Farmers Market fills the inside of St Mary’s Church in Cleobury Mortimer and the early Christmas market held on November 17th had lots to offer those who wanted to get ahead with their Christmas shopping. Tall colourful banners are put out on market day so you can’t miss the spectacle if you drive through Cleobury.

At the time of writing, the total collected for the Royal British Legion Tenbury Branch 2018 Poppy Appeal stands at an incredible £12,075. For a small market town like Tenbury this is a truly magnificent sum and we are proud to be part of such a supportive community. It was a very special anniversary year and everyone seems to have been that much more benevolent and, despite what the Prime Minister tells us, in a time of continuing austerity dug deeper into their pockets because it was so special. The groups and organisations of Tenbury were particularly supportive and we cannot thank them enough, as their involvement helped to raise the profile of the Poppy Appeal and also people’s awareness. We had singers (not least the RBL Choir), musicians, speakers, ladies doing craft work and even suffragettes. The Tenbury Town Band played at our Poppy Appeal Concert and the Teme Valley Band played for us at Tesco on two

Saturday mornings running. Louise Bennet and her team of collectors put in many hours collecting in the foyer of Tesco’s store, while the house to house collectors did sterling work pounding the pavements and knocking on doors. The pupils of Tenbury High Ormiston Academy came up trumps with their acting, poetry and readings at the Poppy Appeal Concert; with their involvement at the Plot of Remembrance; and also the production of some fine posters which were displayed around the town. St Mary’s Church was involved throughout and the RBL Branch Padre, the Rev Mark Inglis, was a stalwart at several of the ceremonies that took place. Mansell Leake sounded the Last Post on three different occasions, and to bring the proceedings to a highly successful conclusion the Church Bell Ringers marked the end of our activities by ringing out the bells for Peace.

So from Tenbury RBL, as the contestants on Strictly Come Dancing say when the public votes keep them in, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Bromyard Christmas Tree Festival This event is probably the largest Christmas Tree Festival in our area. It runs over three days and, this year, had around 60 decorated trees standing in sparkling rows in St Peter’s church in Bromyard.

Organisers said “Every year, all funds raised from tree sponsorship, tree sales, concert ticket sales and donations go to local charities.

This year the benefitting charities are The Mayor of Bromyard’s Charities and Queen Elizabeth School’s small animal area.” When we visited we were lucky enough to arrive shortly before Volante Strings Ensemble had a short rehearsal prior to their concert of ‘Classical Festive Favourites’ at 3pm. A truly beautiful sound reverberated around the church as people studied the trees and noted the attention to detail in many of the decorations and themes.

The Mayor’s Prize winners were Bromyard Football Club Under 10s with their football-themed tree, decorated with football shirt decorations and baubles containing photos of team members, and an accompanying ‘Dear Santa’ letter saying ‘All I want for Christmas is to score my first GOAL!’ The ‘Best 4 foot Tree’ winner was Emma Bouston Funeral Services with their ‘The Holly and The Ivy’ christmas carol theme. Lots of other local groups, schools, charities and business had decorated a tree (provided by St Peter’s) bearing testimony to the fact that Bromyard is a vibrantly creative and diverse community!

Refreshments were available throughout the weekend.

Mamble Church Christmas Bazaar This busy event was filled with light-hearted fun and games and plenty of prizes to be won by those who ventured a pound or two. The large quality tombola and Christmas draw were impressive for a small village and the village hall quickly filled to near capacity not long after the official opening.

The bric-a-brac did a roaring trade in the first half hour and the tables were soon full with people chatting and enjoying tea and cake. Gingerbread Rudolphs (and men), mistletoe, cakes, preserves, hampers raffle, ‘bag a bottle’, lavender bags, ‘Guess the weight’ of a beautifully iced Christmas cake and more helped make this a successful fundraising event for the local church.

You could try and pinpoint the Mamble treasure on the treasure map, choosing named spots such as Chris’s Coconuts, Lester’s Lighthouse, Hazel’s Hollyhocks or Gordon’s Galleon! You could

also try your hand at ‘Pot Luck’ where a pot of sand could be selected and then emptied out over a sieve and if your pot contained a chocolate Santa you won a prize. The

nice thing was that it turned out that all the pots contained three chocolates anyway so even if you weren’t lucky enough to find a Santa among them you were still a winner!

Tenbury Holly and Mistletoe Sales In late November and early December, mistletoe and holly sales are held by Tenbury auctioneer Nick Champion. We went to the sale at Burford House on December 4th to see a reported entry of 554 lots of mistletoe and holly (plain, berried and variegated), 2,431 festive wreaths, 84 Christmas trees and more being expertly auctioned by Nick.

The sale is always a great spectacle and once again TV crews were there filming as the lots went under the hammer.

Reporting an excellent trade, Nick commented “A great sale on Tuesday with Adam Henson in attendance. He even had a go at selling some mistletoe - this will be broadcast in the Christmas special of Countryfile we think! Good prices and a lot of fun.” Clearly the festive season is well under way!
