Net feed intake (NFI) is the next big thing in accurately capturing the variability and heritability of feed conversion in Angus cattle.

Te Mania Angus has been running an intensive and extensive NFI research project – in conjunction with an industry wide commitment to formalise this critical benchmark.

As part of that work, we have begun taking big steps to ensure accurate data capture of ‘netfeed’ or ‘residual-feed’ intake by implementing the Vytelle feed node system,

This system allows us to capture accurate individual animal consumption data, and their associated respective weight gain. The idea is to identify the animals which put on relatively more weight compared to consumption, or, put on the same amount of weight gain for relatively less feed consumed.

As a stud and an industry, we will then be in a position where we can select those animals which are better, or more efficient, feed converters. This data will also be collected and used to increase the accuracy of net feed intake EBVs, which are currently a correlationbased trait.

The research is off to a positive start with initial results reflecting a strong correlation between NFI and methane emissions, as methane is ultimately a waste product of the bovine rumination process. Ultimately animals which are more efficient also produce less waste –meaning less methane.

The information and genetic potential being realised through this research will also help address increasing feed prices and seasonal conditions, which means with a more efficient herd you will be generating more beef and doing it more cost effectively from less feed.
