One Day In

salatiga

Once named the most beautiful city in Central Java by the Dutch Occupation, Salatiga has come a long way from its founding into the city of Harmony as it is today. Beneath its peaceful surface, lies a story of the rise of the local kingdom, colonialization, discrimination, and nationalism, as well as how the locals learned to live together in harmony.

The ticking clock seems to slow down in Salatiga, making it an ideal place to escape from the hustle and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Situated under Merbabu Mountain, Salatiga is blessed with a cool climate and relatively light traffic, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature. The Dutch who settled in Salatiga during the colonial era stated the same reason for their coming, drawn by its similarity to their homeland

remnants from the past

The Dutch occupation left its trails in Salatiga, one of which is in the form of buildings. Some buildings are still in good condition and are used as government offices, while others function as private property. It is easy to spot them as it has a distinct architectural style.

Strolling around Local Market

Since dawn, sellers and farmers arrived already at Pasar, stocking up on their items whether it’s freshly harvested vegetables, meats, and traditional snacks or jajanan pasar as the locals called it.

Many are queuing and picking their choice of items to prepare for their meals to start the day

The local market is easy to find, as it's located in the middle of the city.

In the vibrant world of traditional markets, you’ll find yourself sharing smiles and good vibes with the locals. Spending money in these markets is never a burden, start with a friendly chat, do little bargaining, and you’ll get the best deals around. Dive in and immerse yourself in all the energy the market has to offer.

Getting Here and Around

Salatiga, located between Solo and Semarang, is easily accessible by bus or travel shuttle. Once you arrive, the public minibus provides access to travel along the city. For a more traditional experience, you can also ride an Andong, a horse-drawn carriage, to take a leisurely trip around the area.
