The concept of light and shadow, and its continual association with religious and philosophical references, often underscores its significance in our daily lives. By default, our homes and the spaces we inhabit are enveloped in shadow. We invite light into these spaces, which in turn gives rise to myriad dimensions of shadow. This delicate interplay of light and shadow, the dance between brightness and darkness, shapes the ambiance of a space, gently weaving our emotions and spirit into its fabric.

This project aims to showcase the harmony of light and the nuances of hue present in our living environments, employing elements of spatial division and variations between opaque and transparent conditions.

In the context of a modular housing project, the arrangement of space divisions and the interplay of volumes are orchestrated to optimize the smooth and ambient qualities of interior lighting.

The room divisions and volumes are derived from a straightforward composition of geometric objects.

The dimensions, including the radius and other parameters of the sectors or “horns,” are determined by logistical constraints inherent to modular units.

The dimensions must be appropriate for shipping purposes, ensuring that the units can be efficiently transported and assembled at their destination.

Thus, the design strikes a balance between geometric simplicity and practical considerations, ultimately resulting in a modular housing solution that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The fabric of the garments within the rolling closet acts as a dynamic filter for natural light, diffusing it through texture and color. The wooden interior further reflects and softens the light, creating a layered interplay of materiality and illumination within the space. p\ 8

The interior paneling reveals its modular nature, with the interplay of soft and hard corners creating a dynamic contrast. This juxtaposition is further emphasized by the shifting reflections of light across the surfaces, adding depth and complexity to the design. p\ 10

The room divisions and volumes are generated through a simple composition of geometric shapes and forms. The unconventional and independent characteristics of the room layouts allow for distinct and unique stacking and assembly at each level.

The shared spaces of the housing units and the public library in Jersey City occupy both the ground and second floors.

While the library and housing programs are interlocked, they maintain separate circulation paths and entry spaces. _floor plan_ground level

“Since the inside is different from the outside, the wall -the point of change- becomes an architectural event. Architecture occurs at the meeting of interior and exterior forces of use and space. These interior and environmental forces are both general and particular, generic and circumstantial. Architecture as the wall between the inside and the outside becomes the spatial record of this resolution and its drama. And by recognizing the difference between the inside and the outside, architecture opens the door once again to urbanistic point of view.”

Frustums are designed to seamlessly integrate a meat cultivation center into the urban landscape, prioritizing human interaction and experiences. The design emphasizes a smooth transition between various spaces while accommodating sophisticated operational programs. This is achieved through transparency and accessibility between public and private spaces, as well as the integration of resource supply areas that enhance environmental consciousness and sustainability. By carefully considering the needs of both the community and the operational requirements of the facility, Frustums aims to create a harmonious and efficient environment that contributes positively to the urban fabric.

This introduces challenges to structural stability, necessitating innovative solutions in the stacking of masses within the section.

The main envelope and the cladding system are intricately developed in direct response to the unique structure of the frustum. Through exploration of compositions involving wood laminated and corrugated polycarbonate panels enveloping the frustum, the design proposes an envelope system that not only fulfills functional requirements dictated by the program but also contributes to the creation of a welcoming interior atmosphere.

The angled structural system of the building suggests vertical movements that converge towards the core of the structure. The strategic placement of structural columns, as they taper, offers flexibility in the design while enabling the creation of expansive spaces. This configuration not only enhances the spatial appeal of the building but also optimizes its structural integrity and functionality. By prioritizing both form and function, the design achieves a harmonious balance between architectural innovation and structural efficiency.

In a universe filled with disorder, a framework of consistency and symmetry has been introduced to bring stability to the unpredictability of randomness and to forge a sense of order. But can we truly label chaos as chaos? Or is it merely a more complex form of order? Do humans merely simplify the intricate designs that nature has put in place, or are we just not familiar with such a high degree of intricacy and detail?

The goal of the project is to capture energy sources available at the location, such as wind and solar power, and to tailor its plans to align with the specific conditions of the site.

A modest location like this could provide ample energy. Whether it’s wind or solar energy, the dynamic force of a large group of people, or the power of attraction, all these are potential energy sources that can be harnessed for projects aiming at energy sufficiency.

The design narrative unfolds on a two-dimensional plane, where layers of information converge to foster dynamic interactions and intricate relationships among complex geometries and their configurations.

Through strategic grouping and stacking of site elements, leveraging the natural forces of gravity and wind, this design orchestrates a series of independent spaces tailored to the program’s needs. This project explores the application of various patterns and shapes to conceptualize the pixel beyond its traditional square form. Drawing inspiration from Armin Hofmann and his seminal work, ‘Graphic Design Manual’ (1965), we apply his principles and exercises to create innovative graphic diagrams. These diagrams then serve as foundational layouts for designing agricultural fields.

Farmhouses, with their rustic charm and idyllic settings, remain a compelling muse for artists, photographers, and filmmakers alike. Their picturesque qualities lend themselves well to creative interpretation, inspiring a wide array of artistic endeavors. From capturing the beauty of the countryside to delving into the haunting allure of abandoned structures, farmhouses continue to captivate the imagination and evoke a sense of nostalgia for simpler times.

Cultural myths and legends frequently portray remote areas, such as farms, as settings for supernatural events and eerie encounters. These narratives not only serve as a source of entertainment but also influence modern storytelling. The mysteries inherent in rural life, encompassing the enigmatic landscapes, wildlife, and isolation, offer fertile ground for generating fear and suspense in narratives.

Hofmann’s manual promotes the concept of formal iterations, illustrating how simple rules can produce a vast array of variations. These principles are applied to each project to merge land with form and nature with geometry.

The initial chapter merges Pixel Farming research with notation diagrams inspired by Hofmann’s studies, leading to the creation of various patterned graphic representations. Additionally, an Atlas of plant species will be compiled to complement these efforts.

As these dynamic changes unfold, the role of architecture within the urban landscape is called into question, prompting a need for constant reassessment, revision, and renewal to ensure its relevance. This includes empowering residents and sustaining a vibrant space for the exchange of ideas, innovation, and knowledge creation.

Pixel farming is a method for designing and managing crop systems that leverages high-resolution diversity across farmlands. It operates on the theory that introducing varied diversity - spatially, temporally, and genetically - can boost ecological functions beneficial for crop yield and the delivery of ecosystem services. In this approach, diverse food and service crops are cultivated in intricate patterns within small ‘pixels’, forming individual plant communities. The configuration of pixels, in terms of size and shape, are guided by the ideal ecological role of each crop and the specific conditions of its cultivation area. The placement of crop communities within a field should be guided by soil properties and various environmental conditions.

The idea of the ghost represents the existence of once was. The ghost remains embedded in memory, where it exists beyond physicality, and manifests in the observer’s perception through deception and misreading of one’s surroundings. It explains superstitions and why we place meaning into things that are similar to what we remember in the past.

Utilizing the elastic and conforming qualities of the shrinkwrap, Ghost in The Box aims to deceive the viewer to perceive the form implied by the shrinkwrap. The shrinkwrap -when shrunk to wrap around the orthogonal structure- would act as a “ghost” of the wooden structure that was previously there, where remnants of the edges and vertexes remain impressed on the shrinkwrap. This aims to prompt the viewer to search around the chamber to see whether the structure is there.

This exercises delves into exploring the relationships between parts and wholes to create compositions that are neither simple collections of parts nor purely unified entities. The concept is inspired by Robert Venturi’s notion of the ‘difficult whole’, drawing from Gestalt psychology. p\ 67

“Gestalt psychology considers a perceptual whole the result of, and yet more than, the sum of its parts. The whole is dependent on the position, number, and inherent characteristics of the parts...The difficult whole in an architecture of complexity and contradiction includes multiplicity and diversity of elements in relationships that are inconsistent or among the weaker kinds perceptually...Parts can be more or less whole in themselves, or, to put it another way, in greater or lesser degree they can be fragments of a greater whole...

Properties of the part can be more or less articulated; properties of the whole can be more or less accented. In the com- plex compositions, a special obligation toward the whole encourages the fragmentary part or, as Trystan Edwards calls it, the term, ‘inflection’ (Venturi 90).”

This project examines the pressing social challenges faced by migrant workers in Dubai, UAE, and proposes an architectural intervention as a means to address these issues. By employing innovative architectural solutions, it aims to harmonize spaces dedicated to skill enhancement and living quarters for migrant workers with a distinct structure that encompasses a Bugatti exhibit space. The fundamental goal is to seamlessly integrate vocational training facilities and dormitories within a larger building, crafting a hidden haven that promotes skill development and provides relief from the exploitative conditions of the Kafala system. This labor system frequently results in workers being indebted to their employers, a cycle our design intends to disrupt.

Through a thoughtful amalgamation of aesthetics, functionality, and social innovation, this project endeavors to offer a concrete solution to the systemic exploitation, marking a step towards social and architectural transformation.

Though concealed within the structure, the labors’ craftsmanship is projected onto the exterior facade through the accentuation of mechanical infrastructure.

Certain training spaces intentionally align with apertures on the facade, inviting the audience to admire Bugatti’s craftsmanship. The contrast between sleek surfaces and mechanical elements highlights the laborers’ intricate craftsmanship, marking their transition from concealment to prominence on the exterior—a reflection of their indispensable contribution to Bugatti’s legacy. _stduy model after assembly ▶
