INSPECTION FITTINGS VS JUNCTION BOXES
INSPECTION FITTINGS VS
JUNCTION BOXES - WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

When Marley launched their newly designed Inspection Fittings and tees off the back of the successful ARMA Conduit system launch, the uptake clearly demonstrated there is still plenty of appetite for innovation in the range of Electrical conduit and fittings.
As a result of the launch, discussion has surfaced as to whether an Inspection Fitting can be treated like a Junction Box. The wiring rules are vague so the best option is to get advice from experienced industry professionals. What defines the purpose of an inspection fitting, and how does that differ to a junction box? Inspection Fittings are typically used when installing new take off points in an electrical network and the associated hauling of new cables. Cables should be continuous and without connections. If for practical reasons the cable needs to be broken, then an in line join with heat shrink is a preferable alternative. The compact design of the inspection fittings allows it to aesthetically blend in with the slim conduit system. On the other hand, the intended purpose of a junction box are for instances when new fixtures are to be installed. Within the junction box, cable connectors will be required to join new cables with existing. The larger volume junction box (compared to the slim inspection fitting), should easily accommodate screw connectors and have sufficient access to make future servicing easier. And then there is a grey area where electrical contractors will install a “serviceable joint” in an inspection fitting rather than a junction box. While best practice suggests using the right fitting for the right job, there will be circumstances where this is not possible. In these instances every care should be taken to ensure an electrically safe system and compliance to the relevant codes of compliance. As always, Marley delivers rigid conduit systems that support best practice installation. This also makes any future work easier and safer for the electrical contractors.
