Our National Flag

A national flag is the pride of a country. Today, let us learn about our national flag.

The National Flag of India has three colour bands. These are: • Saffron at the top.

• W hite in the middle with a blue chakra (wheel). This wheel has 24 spokes.

• Green at the bottom.

Our flag is called the Tiranga which means that it has three colours.

What do the three colours represent?

• Saffron represents courage and strength.

• White represents peace. The white colour along with the chakra also represents truth.

• Green represents fertility and growth.

Indian Festivals

There are different festivals celebrated in India. Festivals are fun. Let us read about them.

Seasons

Each season is special. We experience five seasons in India. Let us read about them.

The spring season is full of colours. Trees, plants and many flowers start to grow during this season. We see butterflies, bees and birds around. It is not very hot and not very cold in the spring!

The summer season is very hot. We wear a hat and sunglasses when we go out. We prefer to wear cotton clothes in the summer. We love to eat ice cream and drink lemonade. We also get fruit like mangoes and watermelons in the summer.

The monsoon season brings rain! We carry a raincoat or an umbrella when we go out. We make paper boats and jump in the puddles sometimes.

The autumn season is dry. Leaves start turning dry and yellow, and the trees and plants start shedding leaves.

It starts getting a little cold in the autumn. All animals start preparing for the cold season to come.

The winter season is cold. We wear woollen clothes like sweaters, mufflers, gloves and caps to protect ourselves. In some places, snow falls during the winter.

Folk Dances

Folk dances are traditional dances. They are mainly performed during festivals and celebrations in different states of India. There are different folk dances in India.

Bhangra is a folk dance from Punjab.

It is performed during the festival of Vaisakhi to celebrate the harvest season.

Ghoomar is the folk dance of Rajasthan.

Women perform it.
