Jessica was crowned Miss Rodeo Missouri 2015 during the Miss Rodeo Missouri Pageant back on September 28, 2014 during the American Royal Pro Rodeo in Kansas City, Missouri after a two day pageant of interviews, speeches, horsemanship, and fashion shows. Jessica will graduate from Hannibal LaGrange University in the Spring of 2015 with a double major in accounting and business administration with a minor in finance. When she graduates she will have obtained the 150 hours necessary to
take the CPA examination. Jessica also likes to barrel race, train horses, travel, swim, play the drums, play miniature golf, and attend concerts. In December 2015 she will represent the state of Missouri in Las Vegas during the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. Join her as she starts off her year January 1 at 6 pm at The Junction on Highway 19 in Perry, Missouri with her coronation ceremony. There will also be food, live and silent auctions, and live music. A big part of getting ready for the Christmas holidays is watching Christmas movies and specials. Every channel has its programming tuned to Santa and elves; inept, but well-meaning humans; and holiday-inspired love stories. There are marathons and repeats galore so you can watch some of your favorites over and over as you munch on caramel popcorn and chocolate covered pretzels. I’ve watched my share of movies that each show
a different perspective on the “you gotta believe” theme. I have to admit the animated ones are my favorite, especially “The Grinch.” We found a less known one, “Little One,” about the donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem when my granddaughter was small. It made her cry at first because the little donkey didn’t seem to have a place in the busy work day of the village. But then a kind man chose him because his size and gentleness were just right to carry his

WHAT’S IN YOUR STOCKING? This Christmas is shaping up to be pretty relaxed and enjoyable. Fuel prices are down. Consumers are passing their fuel savings on to retailers, who are passing sales tax on to government. The federal government has gifted us with enough money to run the country for about another year before leaving their carbon footprints of jet exhaust enroute home after a grueling 131 day work year. Of course, there are lots of presents for special interests wrapped snuggly inside the spending package to later surprise the public. The dust has settled from the local Nov. 4 election. Basically all the statistics are record-
ed; some really interesting. The total cost of the Ralls County election was $17,555.63. Of this figure, the city of Center paid $790.84 for supplying and handling their special bond issue. (As do the 911 board, school board, etc. when they add items to the ballot.) “Nobody rides free.” Of 7,036 registered voters, 3,260 exercised their right; making the cost per vote $5.39. (You’re paying to vote. That’s buying a convenience meal and leaving it setting on the counter.) Speaking of cost per vote, (detailed information is available on either the Ralls County website or the Missouri Ethics Commission website and include both cash and in-kind totals) there was
Multiple Drug Arrests Made in New London
After a joint investigation by the New London Police Department and the Ralls County Sheriff Department on December 16 at 4:33 a.m. officers of the New London Police Department, Ralls County Sheriff Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol executed a search warrant at Mont Robe. Two male subjects were arrested and lodged in Pike and Marion County jails. Warrants
were obtained. Thirty-five year old Michael D. Dunn and thirty-six year old Anthony Essig have been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and bond set at $50,000.00 cash only. Charges were filed by the Ralls County Prosecuting Attorney Rodney Rodenbaugh, and warrants issued by Judge David C. Mobley. Additional charges are pending.

pregnant wife on the long journey to Bethlehem. By the end, she was all smiles and wanting to watch it again. As I was finishing some of my work the other day, I flipped on the TV and there was the last part of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” I tuned in just in time for the infamous sled ride. And I laughed in spite of myself. I don’t usually go for the sophomoric antics of over-the-top characters, but I do like this one. There are subliminal messages woven in the clichéd action and the stereotypical characterization. Almost every TV show has a holiday-themed episode. I liked the Hawaiian version of Yuletide on “Hawaii Five-O” and there was the twist on the Christmas episode of the new show, “Scorpion.” Lots of dramatic anticipation that ended with science bowing before “a miracle.” My favorite,
though, will always be the episode of “MacGyver” that explained why he no longer celebrated Christmas. Once again, a miracle occurs, helped along by a small boy; and a world-class “fixer” has his faith restored. This episode is also why “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is one of my favorite Christmas songs. And speaking of Christmas songs, I was delighted to hear another of my favorites, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” at the Winterfest last Thursday night. Just a hint of the wonder and true meaning of Christmas in the secularized and sanitized version of the Christmas programs that were once enjoyed at schools. But, in tune with the season, a spark of hope that maybe things are starting to turn around and common sense will once again prevail over political correctness.

Lanier spent $8,626 for an average of $5.00 per vote. Kolb spent $7,164, averaging $4.99 per vote. See spent $5,562, averaging $3.50 per vote. Total candidate spending dwarfed any previous county elections multiple times. Some other ingredients in the election and government process were not as clear until I sat down with Mr. Duckworth. (While I have confidence in Ms. Lanier, Ernie Duckworth’s service will be missed. As will the service of Sandra Francis in Monroe County. Moving on to other things should be much more relaxing for both.) There seems to be confusion concerning a mailer that circulated just before the election. To clarify: there is no provision for an executive order by any commission member. Any commission action must be by consensus of the entire commission. A total of $62,000 is paid to the Assessor’s office by the county by or-
der of state government. Additional funding is provided by the state of Missouri on the basis of how many individual assessments the county office makes. No questions asked. No action by the County Commission involved. While the figures stated in the mailer are correct as such, the content and context of the information is quite skewed. At the close of 2012, there was a balance of $451,054 in General Revenue. Simultaneously, there was $781.00 left spendable in the budget before final tax deposits. In 2013, tax revenue closed the year with $257,827, but there was $8,935 left unspent in the budget. For 2014, it was projected that there would be $2,783 left UNSPENT in the budget, with $245,435.25 in revenue to date. You would think that someone with years of experience administering and dispersing federal funds would be able to read a spread sheet. And to all a good night. Merry Christmas.

Tiptoe Through the History of Mistletoe
Hanging mistletoe is a holiday tradition around the world. But have you ever wondered why we steal a kiss because we’re standing under some shrubbery? “The use of mistletoe around the holidays dates back to pre-Christian times when it was used by Druids in rituals associated with the winter solstice,” said David Trinklein, horticulture specialist for University of Missouri Extension. “After being harvested by Druid priests with a golden sickle, people placed it over their door as a means of warding off evil in the coming year.” Because of its wide use, it’s difficult to pinpoint where the Christmas kiss under the mistletoe began. It could be based on a Norse belief.“ A Norse legend says that mistletoe in the house would keep warring spouses from becoming too belligerent toward each other,” Trinklein said. That kiss-and-make-up could have translated, over the millennia, into a kiss under the mistletoe. Or it could be based on a Scandinavian tradition that forced combatants to stop fighting. “Legend has it that when two enemies would meet under a tree that had mistletoe, they were duty-bound to lay down their weapons for a day,” Trinklein said. Of course, not everyone was happy with the use of mistletoe. Because the plant was associated with pagan practices, early Christian churches banned its use. “Instead of mistletoe, the church encouraged their followers to use holly. That’s how holly became associated with Christmas,” Trinklein said. Perhaps it’s the name that offends. In ancient times people observed that mistletoe appeared on branches where birds left their droppings. So the word mistletoe is derived from two Anglo-Saxon words, “mis-
tel,” which means dung, and “tan,” which means twig, Trinklein said. So you’re actually stealing a kiss under dung-ona-twig. How’s that for romance? All fun aside, there is one very important warning. Mistletoe is poisonous. It contains viscotoxins, a mixture of toxic proteins found primarily in its leaves and stems. For that reason, real mistletoe should not be used to decorate homes in which there are small children or pets. Today, most of the mistletoe sold for holiday decoration is artificial. Whether real or artificial, mistletoe still seems to cast its magical spell over those who stand under it. Did you know? Each sprig of mistletoe offers a limited number of free kisses. Mistletoe lore says a berry should be plucked for every kiss. When the berries are gone, that’s an end to the twig’s kissing power. While toxic to humans, mistletoe is favored, when other foods are scarce, by birds such as robins, bluebirds and mourning doves. It is hemiparasitic, meaning it obtains some of its nourishment from its host but can also photosynthesize. The genus name for juniper mistletoe, Phoradendron, is derived from Greek and means “thief of the tree.” This name alludes to the parasitic habits of this mistletoe—it produces its own chlorophyll but steals water, minerals and other nutrients from its host. Viscum album, the European mistletoe, and Phoradendron serotinum, from North America, are the two mistletoe species most commonly harvested and sold during the Christmas holidays. While both are toxic, European mistletoe is much more toxic than the North American species.

The choir sang “We wish you a Merry Christmas” to begin our worship service on December 21. Pastor Tom welcomed everyone to our Christmas Sunday Service. There will be no bible study over the Christmas holidays. Rhonda Stout gave a huge Thank You for the out pouring of love gifts for our Adopt-A-Family. Our Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service will be held at 7pm on December 24 .Pastor Tom lead the responsive call to worship after which Cara Hirner & Bryan Day lit the advent candle. The hymn of praise “Joy to the World” was followed by the invocation and Lord’s prayer in unison. Now on this day the Ralls County Commission met with Terry Sanders in regards to Badger road and Brush Creek Road. Now on this day the Ralls County Commission met with Stanford Cole in regards to the work that is to be done in the basement for the University Extension offices. The Commission signed the proposal and told Stanford to start when he can.Now on this day the Ralls County Commission met with Neal Minor in regards to the County property and liability insurance. The Mark Twain Lady Tigers traveled to Louisiana on November 24. The young ladies lost a frustrating 15-16 game to the Lady Bulldogs. Mark Twain led 9-2 after the first quarter. The scoring flipped in the second half with Louisiana adding 8 points and Mark Twain held to only 2 points. Action slowed in the second half, 2-4 in the third quarter and 4-2 in the final quarter. Katie Neff led the scoring with 6 points. Olivia Jones added 4 points Madalyn Ford was 2 for 4 from the line, adding 2 points. Hannah Spoonhower put up 2 points.
Amber Ferry was 1 for 2 from the line for1 point. On December 1 the Lady Tigers traveled to Monroe City and lost a 16-52 heartbreaker. Monroe dominated the action in the first half with Mark Twain trailing 4-21 in the first quarter and 5-37 at the end of the half. In the third quarter Monroe added 10 points to Mark Twain’s 9 points and finished the game with a 5-2 final quarter. Katie Neff led the scoring with 8 points including one 3-pointer. She was 1 for 2 from the line. Hannah Spoonhower added 6 points. Alyssa Ferry added 2 points. Another road game
found the Lady Tigers at Hannibal on December 4 where they lost 23-38 in three quarters against the Lady Pirates. Mark Twain trailed 6-10 in the first quarter and 4-10 in the second, and 13-8 in the third quarter. Katie Neff led the scoring with 8 points. Amber Ferry put up 5 points and was 3 for 9 from the line. Hannah Spoonhower added 4 points. Madalyn Ford added 3 points and was 1 for 2 from the line. Alyssa Ferry put up 2 points. Hayli Ogle was 1 for 2 from the line for 1 point.
MTJH Lady Tigers Lose Two, Defeat Marion County
On Tuesday, December 9, the MT Jr. High Lady Tigers traveled to Shelbina to play the South Shelby Lady Birds. It was a rough first half, but the Lady Tigers started to gel in the second half. The Lady Tigers out-scored South Shelby in the third quarter and matched them point-for-point in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late to catch up. Final score 2034, South Shelby. Leading scorers were Paige Eddington with 11 points and MacKenzie Ogle with 9 points. Both Jr. High girl’s teams traveled to Van-Far on Thursday, December 11. In the B game, Kaylee Waddell led all scorers with 4 points. Hannah Smith, Aimee Ferry, and Morgan Willing each contributed 2 points. This B team put up a strong defensive stop in the second quarter not allowing Van-Far to score a single point and rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 8 of the team’s total, only to fall short at the final buzzer. Final score 1016, Van-Far Indians. In the A game, Kenzie Ogle and Paige Eddington led all scorers, with 11 points and 10 points respectively. Morgan Willing had 3 points, and Hannah Smith and Alexis Ruba each had 2 points. Final score, 2942, Van-Far Lady Indians. “It was a strong effort on this team’s part. We had a good night from each player on the team and I felt that everyone contributed on the court,” said Coach Erin Mack. “We are finally starting to blend, which is great to see, especially with the
conference tournament next week.” On Friday, December 12, the MT Jr. High Lady Tigers traveled to Marion County to face off the Lady Mustangs A team. MacKenzie Ogle had a big night for the Lady Tigers netting 15 of the team’s 28 points. Paige Eddington scored 6 points for the team, Alexis Ruba had 3 points (1-2 from the free throw line), and Haley Branham had 2 points for the team’s total, 28 points (2 points coming from a made basket at our end by the opposing team). “It was a great night of basketball for the Lady Tigers! We out-scored the Lady Mustangs in three of the four quarters, final
score 28-26, Mark Twain. The girls were determined to win this one! We made some big offensive moves and I saw some of that basketball “sense” we have been trying to get to all season finally shine through,” said Coach Mack. “I can see the confidence in their abilities start to grow and they are beginning to make some of those power plays we need to in order to push us ahead at the final buzzer. This is a talented group of young ladies and it’s nice to finally see their efforts pay off in the end.” The Jr. High Lady Tigers head into conference play on Tuesday, December 16, against Holy Rosary at Monroe City.
