ELECTION RESULTS The proposal to increase sales tax for Lewis County to help fund 911 services failed with a vote of 255 yes to 692 no. Lewistown had a proposal on the ballot for residents to decide on a bond issue to fund improvements to the sewer system, and that issue passed with a vote of 119-18.

Purple Heart to be Presented November 10 Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com A young man’s service and sacrifice to his country will be honored with a Purple Heart Presentation, 62 years after being wounded.

That young man is now 80 years old, but his service to his country will never be forgotten.

Merlin Earlywine of Lewistown, is a wellknown and respected community member.

He doesn’t know a stranger. He is a lifelong farmer, auctioneer, family man, church member and Purple Heart recipient. Although his license plates note the fact that he has a Purple Heart, he doesn’t have the actual medal. He has always had the paper-

work, but somehow the government never got around to sending him the Purple Heart Medal.

A few weeks ago, Earlywine happened to mention to his son-in-law John Whitaker that although he was a Purple Heart recipient, he didn’t have the actual medal. Merlin’s daughter, Linda and the rest of his children always assumed it was in his possession. Linda Whitaker then called Brian Munzlinger’s office, who directed her to Rep. Sam Graves office. The Grave’s office sent the paperwork, they filled it out and the medal will be presented to Mr. Earlywine at the Veteran’s Day Program on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Lewis County Courthouse. The ceremony will be part of the annual Highland High School History Club annual Veteran’s Day Program.

Tax Bills in the Mail The Lewis County Tax bills will be mailed Wed., Nov. 6. The Collector’s office said anyone who has not received their tax bill by Nov. 18 should contact the Lewis County Collectors office at (573) 767-5438. Checks should be made payable to Lewis County Collector.

Services for Robert “Bob” Veatch will be held Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Lewis County Courthouse at 2 p.m. Veatch was the current Lewis County Collector who served for over 30 years and was well known and respected.

Denise Goodwin, who worked in the Collector’s office with Veatch and has been appointed interim collector, said, “I have known Bob most of my life and he is truly one of the most kind-hearted, trustworthy and witty people I’ve ever known.

He was well liked and respected by his colleagues and the community and loved by family and

friends. I was fortunate to work with with Bob and have enjoyed everyday.

He was a big influence in my life.”“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, a honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Bill Smith who was elected as Lewis County Recorder in the early 1980s, the same year Mr. Veatch was elected as collector said, Bob Veatch was a good and honorable man, His dry sense of humor and wit was a trait to be envied.

He was slow to anger and quick to laugh. I will miss my lifelong friend.”

Merlin Earlywine was a young farm boy, growing up in Iowa. Much to his parent’s fear and disappointment he enlisted for three years in the army in February 1951.

He was sent to Ft. Riley, Kansas for basic training, then to Ft. Benning, Georgia, then was shipped straight to Korea. He was assigned to the First Calvary Division, Seventh Regiment, First Battalion, Company A. He later also served in Company B. His group was immediately sent in to heavy fighting, 25 miles north of Seoul. Merlin was in outpost, close to the enemy. They were under heavy fire. At 20 minutes til midnight, they were in the middle of a huge fight. He says he wonders how he ever got out. They were pushed off their hill and then went to get the enemy. All hell broke loose. At 6 a.m. on Nov. 6 the Captain hollered “We got to get off, we’re outnumbered.” They would have no air support until daylight but they had to get out under darkness, which might give them a chance. Mortar and rifle fire was raining down. Earlywine was hit by mortar fire and wounded in his shoulder. At that point, Mr. Earlywine doesn’t have the words or desire to tell what happened. They were in a horrible situation and the horrors of the day still show in his eyes as he remembers.

He somehow made it back to the main line and put on a Red Cross Train and sent to Pyongsong, Korea to the hospital, where he spent 18 days recovering from his wounds. Right away he received his paperwork for the Purple Heart, but never received the actual medal. As a matter of fact, he had to buy his own Purple Heart ribbon at the commissary. After a short recovery he was once again sent close to the front and put in Company B. The whole division was later shipped out to Japan and he went to mechanic school.

They were near where the atomic bomb was dropped in World War II and they had the opportunity to go and see the location, but he was not interested in that and there were also fears of contamination. The bomb was dropped in 1945.

In the army, there is a point system, depending on where located, a serviceman earns from one to three points per month and had to accumulate 36 points before being considered to go back to the states. While in Japan, Merlin would only get one point a month and he wanted to get back soon, so he volunteered to go back to Korea. He was then in the 40th National Guard Division, two miles from the front lines. He said it felt like Heaven compared to the front. He was rotated out May 23, 1953. His was the first group processed in Korea and sent straight home, as they would usually have to go to Japan first. He spent 14 days on the ship the General Williams Black. As they reached the shores of America, one of their greatest joys was hearing the Army Band playing California Here I Come. With eight months to go before being discharged, he spent the majority of the time in Fort. Benning, Ga. His parents, Stoker and Vivian, didn’t want him to join the army. His mother wrote him almost everyday, at one time during mail call, he had 42 letters, due to the backlog, but they were a welcome site. His dad would write, using the one finger typing method, and he had an aunt who wrote also. He also began to correspond with his future wife, Norma, and they recently celebrated their 59th anniversary. His letters to back home, were “butter coated.” He didn’t want the folks back home to realize how bad it was in Korea. He also had a brother in the service but was stationed where it was safer.

When he finally got back home to Loganville, Iowa, his parents were waiting for him. He couldn’t believe

how much they aged. He felt like he had punished them, making them worry so much about him. He had spent 14 months in Korea.

Earlywine received several other honors for his service including Combat Infantry Badge, Field Artillery, Combat Engineer, Good Conduct Mission Ribbon, U.N. Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon with five bronze stars, symbolizing the five campaigns. He achieved the rank of Sargent. The Purple Heart Ribbon is always the first in the display of honors on a military uniform and the Good Conduct goes next to the Purple Heart.

On Nov. 10, 2013, 62 years after being wounded fighting a war in a far away country, and being a proud American, Merlin Earlywine will receive the actual Purple Heart Medal. The public is encouraged to show their support for his service and attend the ceremony at the Lewis County Courthouse, Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m.

At the Clarksville Juried Exhibition, C-SC students Stan Hilgenbrink, junior studio art major from Liberty, Ill., and Jessica Shackleton, senior studio art major from Quincy, were awarded honorable mentions in the amateur division. In the professional division, Pat Kerns, adjunct professor of art, received Best of Show, and Debra Myers, professor art, was awarded first place and an honorable mention.

Myers also received the Painting it Pink Achievement award and Kerns received the Mark Twain Book & Gift Shop and Steven Viorel Merit Award at Originale in Hannibal.

Former LaGrange Mayor dies JESSICA SHACKLETON

Harold Ludwig, former mayor and councilman of LaGrange died November 1 in his home in LaGrange.

Ludwig was mayor of LaGrange serving four terms, first elected in 1993 and his last term ending in 2003. He was also the owner of the Kountry Kream Shoppe in LaGrange for 15 years. A full obituary appears on page 4B

EDITORIAL Johnson graduates from Basic Training

Matthew C. Johnson of Canton Missouri recently graduated from Army Ba-

sic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Matthew started basic training on July 15th. Matthew’s parents, Tim and Cindy Johnson, were able to attend graduation, with a family day ceremony on September 25th and graduation on September 26th.

Tim and Cindy were able to spend both family day and graduation day with Matthew and transport him to Fort Lee Virginia where he will go through his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for approximately 14 weeks.

Veteran’s Day Program A Veteran’s Day Program will be held to honor dedicated men and women who have served and are now serving our country at 2 and 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Canton R-V small gym auditorium.

The program will be presented by fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Veterans and their families, relatives of those currently serving and the public are cordially invited to the program.

Jazz and Wind Ensembles Concert at Lewis Street Playhouse Culver-Stockton College’s jazz and chamber winds small ensembles will perform in traditional and unique arrangements, from bebop standards to avant-garde improvisations, at 3 p.m., Nov. 9 in the Lewis Street Play-

house. The ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Aren VanHouzen.

This concert is free and open to the public. The Lewis Street Playhouse is located at 405 Lewis Street in Canton, Mo.

BACKWARD GLANCES From the pages of early Lewis County newspapers 25 Years Ago The Press-News Journal Oct. 13, 1988 Lewistown and LaBelle school buildings and contents were sold at an auction. The Lewistown School was purchased by Carl Geisendorfer, who represented the Lewistown Industrial Development Corporation. LaBelle School was purchased by Troy Baltzelle. Auctioneers Sam Plant and Merlin Earlywine donated their services.

Just one more victory was all that separated the Canton High Lady Tigers from the Missouri 1A- 2A state tourney in the Final Four, but the defending state champions, Westran, prevented that Tiger victory by defeating Canton 3-0 in the section championship. Canton ended their season with a 18-2 record.

45 Years Ago The Press-News Journal Oct. 17, 1968 Matthews Men’s Wear.

A prominent merchandising firm in Canton, closed its doors last week after more that 15 years of business on Fourth Street. Owners Mr. and Mrs. Robert Matthews are retiring. The building has long been the location of men’s clothiers, and the Matthews were preceded by the Jones and Marks Store, which operated there for some 75 years. A new men’s store, Rogers’ Man’s Land will continue the tradition and is already in operation with all new stock, and Mr. and Mrs. James M. Rogers are the new owners. Arriving in Canton in July 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Matthews operated the Hotel Canton for about eight years prior to purchasing the store.

Delmar Lake was elected president of the Lewis County Historical Society held recently at the Presbyterian Church in LaGrange. Others officers included Paul Sellers, Hillard Edwards, Thelma Brinkley and Elizabeth Pollock.

Six Canton girls will give a demonstration of speed reading Thursday morning at Culver-Stockton College. The girls are all in the sixth grade and are being taught by Jeanne

Baxter of Canton. The six are Susan Calvert, Jeanne Crandall, Janice Zenge, Leslie Ruggles, Paula Bixler and Janet Benning.

Craft Lodge 287 AF&AM of Canton will celebrate its 100th anniversary at a dinner Oct. 22.

The history of Craft Lodge will be given by Rev. V.T. Wood.

Re-dedication ceremonies for historic Henderson Hall will be held followed by an open house in the newly-remodeled building.

75 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal Oct. 20, 1938 A large force of men are busy getting the Martin building in shape for a new hotel. Another group is razing the Canton Hotel property, one of the landmarks of Canton. Workmen are putting a tile floor in the Canton State Bank building. A larger group of men is working on the wall along the riverfront.

A large part of the work is being done by local help.

Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Overton will close their cafe in Canton. Mr. Overton says they do not ever expect to go into the restaurant business again. They are both past 70 and have been in the restaurant 45 years.

With temperatures ranging from 88 to 91 degrees the past week, all warm records for October have been broken, The weather has been ideal for road construction and much work which otherwise would have been postponed until next spring is going on in full force. Ewing.

A message received at this place Thursday that scarlet fever had developed in Nichols school about three miles from Williamstown and that doctors were quarantining all who had been exposed.

F.S. Capps has his opening at his new store Saturday and reports a large crowd and a good business. Mr. Capps has a No.1 Ben Franklin Store now and is very proud of it, as it would do credit to a town much larger than Canton.

85 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal Oct. 19, 1928 J.F. Canady of Eagle Grove, Tex., left last week with two of R.C. Glaves and Sons fine Herefords.

HE cam here, over 1,200 miles after the cattle and brought with him a fourwheel trailer, attached to a Ford car, to take them home.

The Bank of Taylor was sold to the First Savings Bank of Palmyra. The Taylor band was sold because of its small volume of business and not because it was insolvent. The Taylor bank was under the direction of C.W. Dearing. It was organized by farmers and merchants in and near Taylor in 1912. The First Saving Bank is an institution of long standing and a leading bank of Marion County. Dr. S. Sanford is the president and J. E. Anderson is cashier. C.W. Dearing will now devote his time to his mercantile business and farming interests in the Taylor community.

That the people of Ewing and vicinity were very much interested in the coming of the Soil Dividends train last week is evidenced by the fact that 4 samples of soil were brought to the train to be tested. This is more than any town along the live of the railroad for the week.

Lewistown was second with 35 samples. The 46 samples brought in to be tested represented 579 acres. Over 400 people visited the train at Ewing during the forenoon before departure for Maywood in the afternoon.

Addie Lillard, living east of town, had the misfortune to lose a large barn Monday. The barn was struck by lightning and they were unable to save anything from it.

A nationwide campaign for the collection of certain fruit stones, fruit pits and nut shells must be vigorously carried on immediately. These materials are urgently needed to make carbon which is to protect our man overseas from German poison gas. The following are the materials to be collected: peach stones or seeds, apricot pits, prune pits, plum pits, olive pits, date seeds, cherry pits, Brazil nut shells, walnut shells (English and native), hickory nut shells and butternut shells.

Coming from their home to Williamstown last Saturday, the team of Mr. and Mrs. Ewart ran away and threw Mrs. Ewart out of the buggy, hurting her so badly that she has since been unconscious.

The Democrats of Steffenville will raise a liberty pole at this place on Oct. 27. The speakers for this occasion are T.A. Stephenson, F.S. Schofield and H.P. Tate.

The enthusiasm of the Democrats of Salem and Highland Townships is running high. They are organizing all along the southern half. At Argola they recently organized a club called the Salem and Highland Cleveland Club, which numbers 75 or 80 already and only organized two weeks ago. The officers of this club are Reese Jones, Williams Wallace, D.J. Glaves, and J.L. Cason.

Last Tuesday, they raised a large liberty pole 75 feet high, from which a nice new flag, a big red bandana and on top of which is fixed a large rooster of sheet iron, painted red.

There was a good turnout, a large number of ladies also being present. After the pole raising Hon. F.L. Marchand made an able and convincing address on an hour and a half.

Roger and Nancy Tiemann of LaGrange, Mo., celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a family dinner, hosted by their children and grandchildren. The couple plans a trip at a later date.

Mr. Tiemann and the former Nancy Nunn were married October 19, 1963, in South Union Baptist Church in Maywood, Mo. Mrs. Tiemann is a daughter of the late James and Lorena Nunn. Mr. Tiemann is a son of the late Henry and

They are the parents of Jon(Kendra) Tiemann and Shawn(Bob) Baker. They have seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Guitar Masterclass and Performance at CulverStockton College Culver-Stockton College welcomes classical guitarist Brad DeRoche to campus for a one-day residency Nov. 10, culminating with a concert at 8 p.m. in Merillat Hall in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center on the C-SC campus. As part of a tri-state tour, DeRoche’s residency at Culver-Stockton will begin with a Masterclass with the students of C-SC adjunct guitar instructor Jesse Mazzoccoli at 5:30 p.m., also in Merillat Hall.

A graduate of Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan Universities, DeRoche earned his doctorate in classical guitar performance and literature from Eastman School of Music. He chairs the music department at Delta College and directs guitar studies at Central Michigan and Saginaw Valley State, as well as the Interlochen Academy. He performs the entire guitar genre span from Renaissance lute tablature to rock

Ferris wins award at Riverside Classic

An Honor Guard from the 3rd. US Infantry keeps day and night vigil at the tomb of the unknown soldier. How blessed we have been because of their duty to country.

Carol Hoteling celebrated her October 29 birthday with supper at Applebee’s with her husband, Delbert.

Their granddaughter, Angelia Smith joined them and purchased the meal as her gift to her grandmother, Carol.

Jim, Ruth and Melissa Shutwell drove to Galesburg, Ill., to the home of Rev. Jim Reynolds. He is a former pastor at First Baptist in La Grange. His family, wife, Deanna and children, Michael and JoyLynn all attended Jim’s church for his sermon and carry in dinner.

Final plans are being made at the Methodist Church in La Grange for their Lords Acre Sale which will begin with lunch at 11-12:30 and the auction to begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov., 9.

Matt, Sheridan and Emma Heindselman came to the home of his parents Russ and Phyllis Heindselman this weekend. It was Youth Hunting and Sheridan wished to participate.

She managed getting up at 5 a.m. and waiting for a deer but was not successful this year. She is only 11 so will have more opportunities with better results.

In the nice article last week about Ruth Shutwell and the 225 afghans she has knitted, I was one of those fortunate to have received a lovely variegated green one.

Saturday Tina McCutchan took her son, Todd White and family, Lynn, Dakota and Ben to St. Louis to the Zoo. The weather was ideal for viewing all the animals. Of special interest was the Yogi Bear 4D Simulator. Before returning home they met up with Tracy Hoteling and Lexie for a short visit.

Jim and Cathy Luders from Cedar Rapids, Iowa visited in the home of Larry and Dorothy Gillespie from Saturday until Monday. They attended church together and it was the first time Jim and Cathy had witnessed a baptism at the First Baptist Church.

Larry and Joyce Solter, Carrie Romero, Velvet and Kevin Hasner and Bruce Solter were among the many who attended the Lutheran Smorgasbord. After the delicious meal they went to Bruce’s home for some more visiting. Trick or Treats were played by Janson Miler on Halloween when he called on his grandmother, Joyce and Aunt Carrie.

Randy and Pam Shubert were weekend guests in the home of her parents, Bert and Pat Cottrell. They all attended morning worship at the Christian Church had lunch and then returned to their home at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Larry and Maxine Wolfmeyer recently enjoyed a trip to the South. Wednesday traveling to Memphis, Tenn. They saw in Arkansas many unharvested cotton fields, a few rice fields being harvested and several soybean fields being harvested. Thursday they took a trolley to Downtown Memphis and toured the Civil Rights Museum, the Cotton Museum ate “Memphis best” BBQ ribs at Blues Cafe on Beale Street toured the Gibson Guitar factory in production and checked on “the ducks” at the Peabody Hotel. Friday started with a visit to Elvis Presley’s birth place in Tupelo, Miss., then drove to Fort Benning, Ga., to visit their grandchildren, Chris, Jessica and Bella Hagen. Chris is a Drill Sgt. at the army base. Driving home they chose to travel through Atlanta, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tenn., and enjoyed the fall foliage. But the best foliage was found on Highway 61 near Bowling Green, Mo Word was received by Pat Cummings that her cousin Roger Campbell had passed away early Sunday morning in a hospital. Roger grew up in La Grange and was living in Arkansas.

November 11th, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day — the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, Nov. 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’ With the holiday’s name later changed to Vet-

erans Day, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake is proud to announce a temporary loan display from the Museum of Missouri Military History in Jefferson City entitled “The First World War,” which will be available for viewing at the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor

Center. The display panels are centered around Frank Buckles, a Missouri native who served in World War I and held the title of the last known veteran of WW I from 2008 until his death in 2011. The panels follow Mr. Buckles on his initial journey to France to serve, his years of service as well as his post war life.

The M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center is located on Rt. J just south

Virginia Terpening Remembered Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com The recent news of the discovery of Lewistown’s Virginia Terpening paintings have been an exciting time for the small town.

Several residents have paintings by her that continue to be treasured.

Sue Dudgeon of Lewistown has been disappointed that the recent publicity over Virginia Turpening’s recently found paintings are depicting Turpening as a loner or a mysterious person. Mrs. Dudgeon and her friends wanted the public to know what a kind and wonderful woman Mrs. Turpening was.

Mrs. Dudgeon became acquainted with Terpening when she married Eugene Dudgeon. Eugene had went to school with Virginia and had known her most of his life.

Virginia Shoup was born in 1917. Her father Floyd Shoup was a state representative in Missouri from Lewistown and her mother Bertha Shoup was a local historian who wrote about the earliest years of the community. Virginia’s love for art was passed down from her mother. She studied art among other things

and her works were well known. The artwork was displayed in many galleries, she won many awards and items of recognition.

She was very well educated. Virginia Shoup was an only child and her parents wanted her to have a lot of education.

When Mrs. Dudgeon first got to know her, Virginia was married to Jack Batzelle and the families both had babies about the same time. Mrs. Dudgeon and Virginia both had a common bond. They both had attended William Woods College in Fulton, both at different times, but they were both alumni. It was a two year, girls only school. The two ladies were friends.

Mrs. Dudgeon knew of Virginia’s artistic ability and always admired her work. She also wanted her to paint a portrait of her young daughters, which would be was the last time Virginia painted two people together. After the painting was done, Virginia told her it was difficult to paint two people in the same setting and that would probably be the last time she did that.

Virginia painted the girls from a picture. Sue took the jumpers the girls were wearing to Virginia

so she could look at the details of the garments.

She would call and ask the girls a question about how they wore their hair.

Mrs. Dudgeon says when the painting was finished she was absolutely thrilled and cried because it was so beautiful and captured her daughters so perfectly. She doesn’t remember what she paid for the painting, but she thought the frame probably cost as much as Virginia charged her. She was extremely grateful and honored to have a painting by Virginia and it has hung on a wall in her living room ever since December 1961. The daughters, Shirley, was nine at the time and Linda was 13.

Sue Dudgeon said Virginia was a very very smart lady, known world wide for her ability. She was also known as a private person, but very nice.

She and her husband, along with the Dudgeons, were charter members of the Lewistown American Legion and the ladies were charter members of the auxiliary. Sue says Virginia was very modest about her art work, never wanting recognition and never bragging about her work.

Dudgeon said she never heard an unkind word from the artist. She was a kind, private and nice person with an artistic ability that Mrs. Dudgeon cherishes and looks at everyday in the painting of her young daughters.

Mrs. Dudgeon and her husband Eugene were married for over 60 years until he passed away in 2011. He help start the Lewistown Fire Department was the Lewistown Fire Chief for over 32 years. They have two

daughters, four grandsons, one granddaughter and five great-grandsons. She is a member of the Park Methodist Church in Lewistown.

The internet sale of the art work of Virginia Terpening was held Oct. 21 and did not meet the required bid minimum so the art work will be auctioned off on the internet through Jason Wallingford United Country Real Estate and Auction Services with the bidding ending on Nov. 18.

Senior Art Majors Featured In Gallery Show Culver-Stockton College is opening the Senior Art Show at 7 p.m., Nov. 16, 2013 in the Mabee Art Gallery, located in the Herrick Foundation Center. An artist talk begins at 7:30 p.m., when students present and explain their senior capstone projects.

Senior art majors at Culver-Stockton are required to participate in an art show displaying their senior capstone projects.

This past semester, senior art majors have been creating their senior projects under the direction of Gary Meacher, assistant professor of art and design.

The gallery display features works from Paige Westerhausen, senior graphic design major from Girard, Ill., Kayla Westermann, senior graphic de-

sign major from Troy, Mo., Jessica Shackleton, senior art major from Quincy, Ill., and Lisa Dawson, senior legal studies and art major from Leslie, Mo. Graphic design majors have to build a complete brand that includes several individual pieces. The created brands include an antique store by Westermann and a cupcake company by Westerhausen.

Studio art majors have to produce pieces of work in their line of focus.

Dawson’s project revolves around dance. Dawson stated, “Most dance themed works seem to be either pale pink ballerinas or hot red salsa dancers. I want to show the in between -- the rebel ballerina.” Shackleton’s project shows the connection between music and art by

creating visual works of art that portray a physical representation of the music she is listening to.

“The beginning process of setting up a show has already taught me so many things that I will need once I graduate,” said Shackleton.

Students are responsible for every part of the exhibition including designing the invitations, arranging the opening reception, installing the show, adjusting the lighting, and taking down the show, all under the supervision of Debra K. Scoggin-Myers, lecturer in art.

The gallery is free and open to the public. The senior show is on display until Dec. 20 and the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CANTON FFA STUDENTS ATTEND NATIONAL CONVENTION

This year’s National Convention for FFA students was held from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 in Louisville, Ky. Eight students from Canton R-V are selected to attend this event every year and are eligible to come based on where they rank in the FFA points system. This year the students who attended were Emily Dochterman, Heather Stainbrook, Bethany Hoffman, Katie Elder, Derek Powers, Nate Phillips, Brice Burnett and Ben Logsdon. The advisors were Lezlie Taylor and chaperone Marvin Hoffman. In Kentucky the students went to the FFA Sessions where guest speakers, such as Rick Pitino and Josh Sundquist, gave motivational speeches.

FOR THE RECORD Obituary HAROLD LEROY LUDWIG Mr. Harold Leroy Ludwig, 73, of LaGrange, Mo., died November 1, 2013 at his home in LaGrange.

He was born January 29, 1940 in LaGrange a son of James Christopher and Bonnie Logan Ludwig. He married Geneva Cleary on May 14, 1960 in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.

Obituary DOROTHY D. RUPPEL Dorothy D. Ruppel, age 99, of Lewistown, Mo., passed away early Wednesday morning, October 30, 2013 at the Country Aire Retirement Estates at Lewistown, Mo. Born February 1, 1914 on the family farm south of LaBelle, Mo., she was the youngest of eight children; two brothers and five sisters of Harry and Violet Naysmith Dedrick.

After graduating from the LaBelle High School she moved to Kansas City, Mo., and attended business school for one year. She went to work as a mail order clerk for Emery Bird & Thayer Department Store.

He and his wife are also owners and operators of Kountry Kream Shop in LaGrange.

He is survived by his wife Geneva Ludwig of LaGrange; daughter, Teresa Reeves and her husband Rob of Penrose, CO, son, Christopher Ludwig and his wife Chong of Colorado Springs, CO, daughter, Alisa Meany of LaGrange, daughter, Debbie Lake and her husband Tim of Mendon, IL; ten grandchildren, Julie, Matthew, Lori, Nathan, Lacey, Roy Lee, Sara, JD, Analise and Blayde; three step grandchildren, LeeAnn, Timma and Dustin; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, James Ludwig and his wife Annette of Keokuk, Iowa and Lyle Ludwig and his wife Nora of Canton, Mo.; two sisters, Jane Martin and her husband Don of Okwood, Ill., and

Connie Otto of Quincy, Ill., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Linda and three brothers, Dennis Gene Ludwig, Rodney Ludwig and Keith Ludwig.

Funeral services were held November 5, 2013 at the Davis Funeral Home in LaGrange with Rev. Jeff Serafin and Rev. Kenneth Ballard officiating. Burial will be in East Midway Cemetery near LaGrange. Visitation was Nov. 4, at the Davis Funeral Home in LaGrange.

Music: Larry and Dorothy Gillespie and Pam Stewart Pallbearers were Karl Allen Weyant, Robbie Weyant, Timothy Lake, Jay Eaton, Greg Ludwig and Danny Ludwig.

Honorary Pallbearers were Blayde Meany, Connor Blumke, Dustin Lake and J.D. Nichols.

The family suggests memorials be made to the LaGrange First Baptist Church Building Fund.

In 1941 she moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed as a secretary in the Department of Navy, later working as a secretary to a highly decorated U.S. Naval Representative, Admiral Kent Hewitt of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations until the end of World War II. In 1945 she moved to New York where she met and married Henry M. Ruppel on October 1, 1949. She continued to work for the Department of the Navy as a military staff member for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

Mr. and Mrs. Ruppel retired to Hendersonville, NC and built a house, traveled, enjoyed gardening and doing volunteer work. In their years of traveling she went to every state except for Oregon and although she hadn’t been there she flew over Mt. St. Helen after the eruption and could see the side of the mountain gone. One of the highlights of her travels was going to Finland and then on to the Arctic Circle.

After 32 years of marriage, Harry passed away January 21, 1982. In 1989 she moved to Quincy, Ill., to be near family. She worked as a volunteer at the Illinois Veteran’s Home and for the Salvation Army. She was

also an active member of the Melrose Chapel Methodist Church.

For the past three years Mrs. Ruppel has resided at Country Aire Retirement Estates at Lewistown, Mo., where she enjoyed the other residents and participating in activities.

Mrs. Ruppel was also preceded in death by two brothers, William E. and James N. Dedrick and five sisters: Jean Sellers, Grace and Edith Dedrick, Mary Miller and Harriet Smith; four great nieces: Mary V. Graham, Marjorie June Morrow, Billie Rae Allison and Ann Bisser; one nephew, Richard “Dick” Smith and one great nephew, Stephen Sellers.

Surviving are nieces and nephews including Bill and Joerine Sellers, Bob and Jan Sellers and Barbara Ruppel.

Also surviving are many great nieces and great nephews.

At her request Mrs. Ruppel has been cremated and a private graveside service will be held at a later time at LaBelle Cemetery at LaBelle, Mo. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Ruppel may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. The memorials may be left at or mailed to Coder Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 151, LaBelle, MO 63447.

FOR THE RECORD Obituary ROGER LEON CAMPBELL Roger Leon Campbell, 72, of Mount Pleasant died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at White River Medical Center.

Born on March 30, 1941 at LaGrange, Missouri, he was the son of Clarence Leon and Cleota Mae (Downs) Campbell.

He was a flooring contractor and a member of the Barren Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Rog could build anything and was always building things for his children. He loved to fish, being on his tractor and lawn mower, and ride around his farm on his MTV. Being a big kid himself, he loved to tease and tell tall stories. He was always happy and fun to be with. His family was the most important thing in his life he loved being a dad and pawpaw.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Betty (Ferguson) Campbell; sons, Russell Evans and his wife, Stepha-

Obituary CLARENCE â&#x20AC;&#x153;CHUCKâ&#x20AC;? GAUS

ROBERT E. VEATCH Robert E. Veatch, 64 of Lewistown, Missouri died October 28, 2013 at the Country Aire Retirement Estates at Lewistown.

The son of Earl L. and Margaret M. Day Veatch was born on March 10, 1949 at Quincy, Ill. He was united in marriage to Sharon McCoy on August 13, 1971 at Columbia, Mo. Bob served as the Lewis County Collector of Revenue for the past 31 years. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in Political Science.

He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, Monticello A.F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge #58, Quincy Writers Guild, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, former chair of Lewis County Central Democratic Committee, former member of the Heartland Resources Board, former President of the Missouri Collectors Association and former Missouri state representative to the Board of National Association of Financial Officers, Treasurers and Collectors. He was a loyal grass roots, yellow-dog democrat and supported the interests and causes of many organizations in Lewis County. Bob enjoyed martial arts and was a certified Tai-Chi instructor.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of Lewistown, children, Sara Talley and husband Michael of Olathe, Kan., Micah Veatch and wife Michelle of Overland Park, Kan., and Hannah Veatch and friend Jason Gunning of Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren, Cole Talley, Owen Talley and Addison Veatch; two sisters, Carol Winthrop and husband Rob of Athens, Ga., and Karen Veatch of Monticello, Mo.; a brother, Roy Veatch and wife Debbie of Manchester, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be December 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Lewis County Courthouse in the Courtroom at Monticello, Mo. Memorials may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, Hospice of Northeast Missouri, Monticello Lodge #58 or the Humane Society.

Gaus, 70 of Canton, Missouri died Sunday, November 4, 2013 at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

The son of Ira and Virginia Barth Gaus was born on June 7, 1943 at Ten Mile, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Kay Dugger on October 24, 1974 at Springfield, Illinois.

Clarence was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from Moorman Manufacturing in Quincy, Illinois after 30 years. He was a member of American Legion Otto Bruner Post #170 and former member of Bass Masters.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Virginia Brown of Canton, Missouri; his wife, Kay Gaus of Canton, Mo.; son, Wade Gaus and his wife Darla of Canton, Mo. and his daughter, Beth Thomas and husband Lee of Knob Noster, Mo.; six grandchildren, Levi Gaus, Makaylee Stice, Ashlynn Thomas, Katelyn Gaus, Madalyn Thomas and Cody Thomas; a brother, Ronald Gaus and wife Dona of Louisiana; half-sister, Pattie Daniels of Keokuk, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ira Gaus, step-father, Otis Brown, granddaughter, Amanda Dale Brown, great-granddaughter, McKenzie Almanza and a brother, Kenneth Gaus.

WILLIAM T. COMBS William T. Combs, 77 of Mexico, Missouri and formerly of Canton died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico.

The son of Patrick and Littie Belle Conley Combs was born on November 3, 2035 at Fouke, Arkansas.

He was united in marriage to Shirley J. Gore on December 6, 1967 at Texarkana, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on June 11, 2001.

Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, American Legion Otto Bruner Post #170, U.A. #125 Pipefitters Union and the A.F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge #173, Poynette, Wisconsin.

He loved spending time with his grandkids and fishing for catfish.

He is survived by his children, Janene Ankarberg and husband Ron of Seattle, Wash., Travis Combs of Tacoma, Wash., David Combs of Aurora, Colo., and Jack Combs and wife Tina of Quincy, Ill.; thirteen grandchildren, Laura, Jessie, Dakota, Jessica, Jeremy, Joseph, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Jared, Timothy, Anne, Julie and Eli; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter-in-law, Cari Combs and a sister, Doris Attaway.

Obituary LINDA R. COLLINS

RICHARD L. BAILY Richard L. Baily, 68, of Canton, Missouri, died November 3, 2013 at Lewis County Nursing Home, in Canton.

The son of Lawrence C. and Louise Wilson Baily was born October 12, 1945 in Quincy, Ill. Richard graduated from Canton High School in 1963 and majored in art at Kirksville State Teachers College and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.

He was an accomplished artist, restored automobiles, an ardent student of World War II and of the history of railroads in Northeast Missouri, and an avid reader.

Rich is survived by his sister, Diane Baily Carlstone and husband, Larry, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; nephews, Spencer Carlstone and wife, Amanda, and children, Callie, Tatum, Lindley, Amelia, Sibley, and Palmer Carlstone of Pella, Iowa; and Reed Carlstone and wife, Whitney, and sons, Strohm and Shepherd Carlstone of Plano, Texas; Uncle Stanley Wilson and wife, Kay, of Canton, and several cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O.S. Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Baily; aunts Doris Wilson, Miriam Baily Bell and Cena Baily Bleigh.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Davis Funeral Home, Canton, Missouri. Burial will follow in Forest Grove Cemetery, Canton.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 8, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton.

Mrs. Linda R. Collins, age 69, of Canton, Mo., died Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at her residence in Canton.

She was born October 31, 1943 in Quincy, Ill., a daughter of James E. and Vera Boyce McClaughry.

She married Robert J. Collins on July 14, 1962 in St. Patrick, Mo. He survives.

Linda was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Canton and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary of Canton. Her favorite pastime was being with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Bob of Canton; two sons, Dan Collins and his wife Julie and Doug Collins and his wife Stefanie both of Canton; one daughter, Gail Stahl and her husband Tim of Maywood, Mo.; two grandsons, Nathan Stahl of Maywood and Lucien Collins of Canton; four granddaughters, Ashley Collins Saylor Collins and Hunter Collins all of Canton and Kaycie Stahl of Maywood, Mo.; one brother Jim McClaughry of Canton and two nephews and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her step father Wally Freeman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Canton with Monsignor David Cox, Fr. Basil Euro and Fr. Boniface Nzabonimpa officiating. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton. Visitation will be held Sunday November 3, 2013 from 4 until 8 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton.

BILLIE J. HOFFER Mrs. Billie J. Hoffer, 84, of Edina, Mo., formerly of Ewing, Mo., died October 30, 2013 at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

She was born October 6, 1929 in Quincy, Ill., to Robert Edward and Marjorie Edens Burks. She married Arlo Dean Hoffer on November 8, 1950 in Pocahontas, Ark. Mrs. Hoffer was employed when they were first married as a switch board operator at the telephone company for five years. She also raised dogs for several years as she was quite the animal lover. She also assisted her husband in the farming operation. She was a member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church near Ewing. She dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by one son Michael Dean Hoffer and his wife Violet of Ewing; one daughter, Vickie Jean Edwards and her husband Gordon of Edina; two grandsons, Christopher Johnston and his wife Kim of Ewing and Shawn McKenzie and his fiancé Kelly Stewart of Rockford, Ill.; three granddaughters, Michaellett Brumbaugh and her husband Jeremy of LaGrange, Heather McKenzie of Macon, Mo., and friend Marcus Stauffer of Edina, Alicia Edwards of Edina; six great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and two sisters.

Funeral services were November 2, 2013 at the BallDavis Funeral Home in Ewing with Rev. Jesse Rogers and Rev. Randy Ewart officiating. Burial was in Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy, Ill. Pallbearers will be Christopher Johnston, Marcus Stauffer, Shawn McKenzie, Doug Hoffer, Jeff Hoffer and Jeremy Brumbaugh.

Honorary Pallbearers are David Hoffer and Kevin Kelly.

Culver-Stockton College’s men’s basketball team will begin the 2013-14 campaign ranked No. 18. The Wildcats earned 108 points in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches Preseason Top 25.

Georgetown (Ky.) College, who defeated the Wildcats in the national quarterfinals and eventually captured the 2012-13 national championship, is the preseason No. 1 team in the country.

The Wildcats, who opened the 2013-14 season at Nov. 2 at home against Mount Mercy University with a 79-71 win, was ranked 10th in the final poll of 2012-13. C-SC returns 11 players from last year’s team that finished with a schoolrecord 26 victories against nine losses.

Two other Heart of America Athletic Conference teams are ranked in the preseason poll. Joining the Wildcats is defending conference champion Evangel (Mo.) University, who ranked ninth in the preseason poll, and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University, which is ranked 15th in the preseason poll.

The Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass., inducted three new members on Oct. 18, one of which was Caren Kemner, Quincy, Ill., native and Culver-Stockton head volleyball coach.

There are only 115 people that have been inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame since 1985. When Kemner first found she was going to be inducted, she said she was in shock and disbelief.

“Having been retired for 20 years I just figured it wasn’t going to happen,” she said.

“Just because I thought I had a good career didn’t mean the whole world thought I had a good career.”

Players and coaches must meet three main guidelines to be selected as a nominee. They have to be retired for no less than five years from active participation, achieve significant national or international recognition for no less than 10 years and the significant recognition should include national championships, national level participation, international medal performance or alltournament/all-world selection, according to the Volleyball Hall of Fame website.

Kemner said being inducted into such an elite group is hard to put into perspective.

She said she probably was on this journey before she knew it “I just think there were events in life that I took for granted for just being a kid and being a good athlete.

She said she became interested in volleyball during high school. While she played all three sports her freshman year, Kemner said she shifted away and played only softball and volleyball the rest of her high school career.

“More athletically I became involved in the game [volleyball] and understood it and I was like this game is designed for me,” she said.

Kemner went on to play for the U.S. National Team for 15 years, during which the team made several Olympic appearances.

She also spent time playing on an Italian Professional League Team.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards including being named the most valuable player by the Federation of International Volleyball in 1991, most outstanding player at the World Cup in 1991, a

six-time recipient of the U.S. Olympic Committee Female Volleyball Athlete of the year and a five-time Team USA most valuable player.

She said after she retired, she moved back to this area to be with her family. Even though the opportunities are there to go to bigger schools, she said she remained in this area because family is her top priority.

Kemner coached at her alma mater Quincy Notre Dame High School for two seasons. She then made the next step and began coaching at Culver. She said coaching at Culver seemed like a good opportunity and the timing was right.

Kemner is in her third season as head coach for the Culver program. During her time, the team has improved every year and the record this year is 22-10.

While there are different expectations and stresses when it comes to coaching high school versus, Kemner said coaching always has been about the fundamentals. She said she wants them to enjoy the process by not only working hard and but also having fun.

Her experiences throughout her career have had a huge impact regarding how she coaches. She credits having a good sense of humor about things and figuring out what works and what doesn’t has helped her to be a successful coach.

“You can still have fun but there’s a whole completely different level of expectation.,” she said. “Hopefully it’s something they carry with them the rest of their lives.

During the first two seasons at Culver, her teams have produced six Heart of America

Athletic Conference all-league selections, seven players named NAIA Scholar-Athletes and the team was named a NAIA ScholarTeam for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Kemner said the most rewarding aspect is the interactions she has with the team. She said she is glad that she has the type of relationship with her players where they can talk to her whenever they need to.

“Just because I was an Olympian doesn’t make me an Olympic Coach,” she said.

“That’s something I did and now I have to figure out what I’m supposed to do next.”

She said if she had to give any volleyball player advice, it would be to enjoy the fact that you’re fortunate enough to be playing a game.

“The reality is the heart and soul and guts of it is that it is a game and you have the opportunity to take place in a part of a special moment,” Kemner said. “You can lose a game and you’re still a wonderful person and you can win and you’re still a wonderful person. It doesn’t change who you are it’s a part of what you do.”

She said she cannot thank everyone enough for not only this achievement, but everything that has happened in her life.

“If it wasn’t for those teammates, if it wasn’t for the support, this would have never happened,” Kemner said. “Whether it was family, or friends, or community support, the tentacles when it comes to thanking people are so far reaching there’s no way to figure it out. There’s no way to stop thanking people for everything they’ve did.”

Widener Earns HAAC Offensive Player of the Week CulverStockton College quarterback Curtis Widener has been named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) O f fe ns ive Player of the Week for his performance in the Wildcats’ 42-35 victory over Avila (Mo.) University last Saturday.

Widener, a senior from Boone, Iowa (Boone HS / Ellsworth CC), threw for career-highs in yardage (275) and touchdowns (4), completing 22 of his 37 passes (59.5 percent) with no interceptions. He led C-SC, which trailed 27-14 at halftime, on a five-play, 61yard drive in the final minute of regulation for a game-winning touchdown.

Widener completed three of his five passes for 44 yards on the final drive, including a 24-yard game-winner to tight end Chris Cunningham as the Wildcats won for the first time this season. His other touchdown passes covered seven, 20, and 43 yards with three of his touchdown passes going to Cunningham. He also carried the ball a career-high 13 times for 19 yards.

For the season, Widener has thrown for 1,514 yards on 106 completions, an average of 14.3 yards per reception and 13 touchdowns. He is averaging 168.2 yards per game passing this season.

The Wildcats (1-8) are slated to play their final road game of the 2013 season this Saturday, Nov. 9, against MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Olathe, Kan.

Highland Football Season Ends

Highland’s upset bid in a Class 2 District 5 first-round playoff game fell short at Bowling Green, with the Cougars being defeated 28-13. Wes Cramsey led the Cougars with 89 yards rushing and a touchdown. Highland High School Football Cougars were defeated at an away game at Louisiana with a score of 56-0. Pictured is a Highland Cougar player at the last home game of the season on Oct. 25. The Highland Football team finishes the season with a record of 1 win and 9 losses.
