The City of La Plata Street Department has been working instrumentally on the local city streets. The city purchased their own equipment and have been resurfacing roads all over town, thus saving time and money by not having to contract the work outside the city. The streets are looking better and potholes are shaping up all over town.

EXTENSION RESOURCES HELPS FARMERS By Joe Koenen, Agri-Business Specialist CONTINUE SCOUTING Some places received a much welcome rain over the weekend. My grandfather would have called it “a million dollar rain” but that was years ago and everything has gone up so it’s probably worth more than that today. Anyhow, just because we got some relief doesn’t mean you should stop scouting fields and gardens for insects. Spider mites can still be an issue in beans if hot, dry weather continues and other insects such as grasshoppers won’t be far behind. Scout your fields on a regular basis and remember to contact our office (947-2705 or koenenj@missouri.edu) if you have questions or need assistance. EXTENSION RESOURCES I have talked about some resources
that are available from University of Missouri Extension before. Today I’ll limit it to Ag Business resources. Most of you hopefully are aware that we have a couple of different types of farm record systems and written farm lease forms that are online now too. There are guides that discuss custom rates (being updated by the end of this year), fence laws, farm labor issues and past farmland values. Past land values can be helpful in estates where the land value isn’t known. Farm leases and arrangements and assisting landlords and tenants are part of what we do. We also have a lot of guides and information related to marketing grain and livestock, including historical data. Estate and business succession planning is critical to farmers and we have several things related to helping people with that. It’s not something to put off or do yourself but you must be knowl-
edgeable before seeing an attorney. We can assist in making certain you have all labor posters you are supposed to have if you employ labor too. There are many laws in Agriculture and we can assist you in understanding the basics of them and how they might impact you. There is a Missouri Ag Law Center at http://aglaw.missouri.edu/ that has a great reading room to find out more Ag law information. Finally, don’t forget that I can personally assist you in business planning in addition to these areas so don’t hesitate to give me a call. REMINDERS Keep in mind that the Missouri State Fair deadline is coming up faster than you think (July 1st there). All of their information is online but if you have any questions or need some help contact the Macon County Extension Center at 660-385-2173.
