Church Sends Soldier Care Packages The North Dollar General in Kirksville began a soldier care box drop off program several weeks ago. Since then Manager Shannon Doyle ,Employees and Customers have collected over 500 items of food and snacks. The care boxes are going to an Army Unit deployed to Afghanistan. Gail Brown pictured packing boxes is the mother of one of the soldiers. She and her husband Dickie are fairly new to La PLata where he is the City Manager. The Illinois Bend Church also has a church member who is employed by the North Dollar General. It is believed that this is a unique partnership of a Dollar General Store and a Church collecting and sending Care Boxes to deployed soldiers. In other news the Church just held its first Vacation Bible School since the church was reopened. It was well attended and enjoyed fully. The following Sunday 60 people attended the breakfast ,baptism,VBS event and worship. The Men’s ‘Builders Group’ held a cook out with 14 in attendance.The Legacy Group is planning the September Church Reunion. The Terrific Tuesday Chapel is enjoying weekly gathering which is open to anyone seeking prayer and fellowship. The Woman’s ‘Sew and SOS’ Group is making hospital Ditty Bags and Church Welcome Kits. The church is planning its annual picnic fellowship, blue grass music and worship for June 27th. Duane and Peggy Turner are making their special homemade ice cream for the Picnic. The last Saturday of the month is ‘Willow Bend’ prayer breakfast for the community. All these plus other events are on facebook and open to anyone.
ASSAULT SENDS ONE TO HOSPITAL On Saturday evening, June 9, 2012 at approximately 9:47 p.m. the La Plata Police Department responded to the 400 block of North Gex Street in reference to a Domestic Disturbance. Upon their arrival one subject had already fled the scene in a motor vehicle and the Macon County Ambulance was summoned for a second subject who was still on scene. One subject was taken by ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville and was later released after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained to the face and head. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office and the Macon Police Department were notified and attempted to locate the subject who fled the scene, but were unable to locate the subject. The investigation was completed and a probably cause statement and request for warrant were forwarded to the Macon County Prosecutors Office on John K. Houston for 2nd Degree Domestic Assault.

WESTON SMITH Weston Smith has been selected as the recipient of a $1,000 Education Financial Award from the LaPlata Community Presbyterian Church. The recipient of this award must exhibit strong character, Christian values, an intensive desire for selfimprovement and financial need. This fall, Weston will be a freshman at the Missouri Valley College in Marshall majoring in Physical Education and Sports Management. Weston is the son of Ralph and Kelcey Smith and the grandson of Glenn and Karen Wood, all of LaPlata.

The City of La Plata City Council met in regular session on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at the council chambers. Present were Mayor Charles Thompson, Alderman Bill Adams, Alderman Dennis Jones, Alderman Sean Herron, Alderman Trent Perry, City Administrator Dickie Brown and City Clerk Bobbie Jacques. Also Present: Dusty Sawyer and Stan East Jr. Meeting Called to Order: Mayor Thompson declared a quorum present and called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Stan East gave the invocation. Consent Agenda: Regular Meeting 05/08/12, Special Meeting Minutes 05/17/12, Bill Payer 2012-05, Utility Coordinator Monthly Report, Tax Coordinator Monthly Report and Park and Recreation Monthly Report. Alderman Jones made a motion and seconded by Alderman Herron to approve the consent agenda. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Mayor and Board Committee Report Mayor Thompson requested items h and i under new business be moved under Mayor and Board Committee Reports as item b and c. Aldermen Jones made a motion and seconded by Aldermen Perry to move items h (Jerry Thomas Fund Raiser) and item i (City’s support for Jerry Thomas Fund Raiser) under Mayor and Board Committee Reports as item b and c. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Park Board Appointment Mayor Thompson requested the Board of Aldermen to approve the ap-
pointment of Julie Lewis to the Park and Recreation Board. Alderman Adams made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to appoint Julie Lewis to the Park and Recreation Board. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Stan East addressed the Board of Aldermen in regards to a fundraiser for Jerry Thomas. Jerry and Peggy lost their home in a fire on May 24, 2012. Jerry suffered second degree burns on 35% of his upper body. Jerry has been a member of The La Plata Fire Department for forty-five years. The fund raiser will be held on July 7, 2012 in the City Park among a few of the activities planned there will be a cake walk, silent auction and entertainment. Stand requested the use of the Council Chambers during the fund raiser. Alderman Adams made a motion and seconded by Alderman Perry to allow Stan East the use of the Council Chambers during the Jerry Thomas Fund Raiser. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Mayor Thompson appointed Alderman Jones and Alderman Herron to a committee to oversee and answer questions that may arise regarding the Jerry Thomas Fund Raiser. Alderman Adams made a motion and seconded by Alderman Perry to approve Alderman Jones and Alderman Herron on the committed to oversee the Jerry Thomas Fund Raiser. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Park Board President Dusty Sawyer addressed the Board of Aldermen with an update of the improvements being
made at the Santa Fe Lake. Dusty informed the Board that Dickie Brown and his wife Gail had volunteered to paint and help with improvements to the concession stand at the lake. The Park Board had also purchased a new boat dock, diving boards with a slide, and playground equipment at the Santa Fe Lake. The funding for the additions was donated by the Elizabeth Carpenter Estate Trust. Administrator: Financial: The City Administrator Dickie Brown reviewed the monthly financial report and submitted a budget proposal for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Old Business: Generator Installation: The progress of the installation of the new electric generators is ongoing. Military Truck: The military truck has been sold in the amount of two thousand dollars and the proceeds deposited to the City account. New Business: Dirt Disposal: Alderman Perry inquired about hauling clean fill (concrete, brick, and dirt) to the property located on west Center Street. The consensus of the board was to allow clean fill to be hauled with the City Administrator inspecting fill prior to being unloaded. Tree Trimming: Alderman Perry informed the Board of Aldermen there are several trees in La Plata that are in our electric lines. Adair Count water rate increase: Administrator Brown informed the Board the Adair County Water District has increased the water rate to the City in the amount of 9%. The Board of Aldermen

It Or Ticket” campaign is part of a national effort focusing on seat belt violations in an effort to raise seat belt use and awareness. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol have taken a zero tolerance stance on those
who choose not to wear their seat belts, meaning if a motorist is stopped for some other traffic violation and found not to be in compliance with Missouri’s seat belt law they will receive a ticket. As a result of this en-
forcement operation, officers made a total of 97 arrests and issued 99 warnings. Of those arrests, 50 individuals were cited for seat belt violations. “Without a doubt, the
use of seat belts saves lives,” stated Captain Wilt. “We hope enforcement operations such as these help encourage motorists to take a few extra seconds to buckle their seat belts.”

LOCAL NEWS Macon County Relay For Life Raises $25,238 For The Fight Against Cancer Residents of Macon County made a giant step toward a cure for cancer on June 9-10, 2012 when they walked throughout the night during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Just four teams and 35 participants came together during this year’s Relay to raise in excess of $25,238. Money raised during Relay For Life helps fund the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and service programs. The American Cancer Society is the largest nonprofit supporter of new cancer research and the largest voluntary health organization fighting cancer in our country. “We appreciate all the support we received from each of the teams, as well as from our sponsors,” said Judy Wilson, event chair. “We are especially grateful to the many volunteers and their families for all of the hard work it takes to make this event happen.” The ConAgra Employees’ team earned the top fundraising place as a large team (more than 15 team members) at the event, raising $4,655. Macon Jaycees were recognized as the top fundraising small team (15 or fewer team members), raising $4,811. The second place, small team, was the Macon Police & Fire Personnel Team raising $3918 and third place, small team, was Veolia Environmental Services raising $455. During the past couple of weeks, a new team was being formed in memory of Tony Levett and they raised $250 for this year’s event and hope to return next year as a fully developed team. According to Wilson, more funds are expected to be turned in during the coming weeks as teams finalize invoices and other donations are collected. Wilson hopes to exceed $26,000 in the coming weeks prior to finishing the 2012 event activities. The Relay began its official ceremonies at 6pm at a new location this year, the Macon County Fairgrounds, when approximately 75 cancer survivors kicked off the event by walking the first lap. During the evening, several people were recognized for their hard work and commitment in the fight against cancer. Judy Wilson, event chair, honored the Randy Johnson Memorial Fund by presenting them with a Community Support Award. In addition, Macon County’s Hero of Hope for 2012 was announced. Judy Wilson presented the unique award to Amy Korman as she continues her battle with cancer. A special recognition also took place this year at Macon’s event. Each year, the American Cancer Society recognizes 28 cancer survivors in each of its divisions. The High Plains Division includes Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Hawaii/ Guam. Macon’s own Debbie Wiggans has been honored as a 2013 High Plains Relay For Life Hero of Hope. Wiggans will attend training and learn more about how to present her story and will speak at many Relay events across the region during 2013. She is recognized as a Hero of Hope not only because of her battle with cancer but also because she has formed a cancer survivor’s support group here in Macon. The Luminaria Ceremony at 9:00pm illuminated the entire track as participants lit luminaria candles in memory of those who’ve lost the battle to cancer and in support for those still fighting the disease. Approximately 300 luminaria were sold at this year’s event. Closing the event, a special video created by Sharon Kennison was presented including photos of many area survivors and cancer victims. It was a tribute to those in Macon County who have fought the tough battle against cancer. At the closing ceremony, teams received recognition for their hard work and fundraising achievements. Each participant has been given the challenge to encourage others to participate in the event next year, either through forming a team, becoming committee volunteer or other volunteer position. A wrap up celebration for teams and committee members will be held in the near future.

Jerry Thomas returned home on Wednesday, June 13th after a prolonged stay at Columbia University in the Burn Unit after the Thomas home burned to the ground and he sustained burns to his body by making sure everyone was out of the house. As he turned into La Plata’s south junction a welcome home was given to him by family, friends, La Plata Fire Department and La Plata Police Department. A fund raiser will be held in their honor on July 7th in the City Park. “Welcome Home Jerry”!

FATHER’S DAY OUTING

Went for a drive on Saturday through some farmland country that I’ve never been through before, just southwest of Moberly on V, beautiful! The crops are an amazing color of green, the corn about 3’ tall and waving in the wind like they were saying hello as we drove past. We had some rain in our area over the weekend, but as the evidence shows, I would say Howard County has had a great deal more. The ground is so hard and cracked here at home, I see people out watering their flowers, scrubs and lawns and wonder if we will ever get the much needed drizzle from above that the farmers so desperately need for their life lines. The Farmer’s Markets are still going strong in the areas so I’m assuming those small business owners are watering their gardens as well. The weather in our area is such a confusing zone of elements, hot to warm to cold to dry to air conditioning. Dry heat is not something I’m fond of; if I was I’d move to Arizona. And that’s not happening. The kids however, are having a blast in their pools outside, the sprinklers and slides in the back yards or at the local swimming hole, summer brings a happiness to young faces all over town. If kids aren’t staying cool from water they are enjoying the summer riding bikes, going to Vacation Bible School, vacations, going to grandma and grandpas or hanging out with friends at the sitters. Oh to be young again, so many

things we would change. Or maybe not, we are who we are because of how we grew up and the things we did as kids, those things are what makes us stronger. Learning from our mistakes, wiser from error and lucky we lived “back in the day”. LOL I loved riding in the back of the pickup truck, laying in the back of the car window when we went on a trip and sitting in the front seat before I was 4. Wow, the things we did as kids and we are still alive, safe from harm, no infections or bacteria growing because we ate mud pies and drank after everyone else and I don’t ever remember anyone saying, “use the hand sanitizer”. The only saying I really remember is “wipe your feet” and “shut the door, you born in a barn?” LOL....so missing my mom right now. Which reminds me, my oldest will be a mom this year. So excited to have another little one around the house. Sara is due in November. This Christmas will be a grand memory at my house. Definitely looking forward to it and it will be here before we know it. Keep It Kool, Bec
The Father’s Day Golf Tournament was held on Sunday, June 17th at the La Plata Golf Course. Golfers began teeing off at 7:00 a.m. for the morning session. Sons come home for the weekend to play golf with good old dad” and spend Father’s Day. Beau and Brady Crawford both traveled home over the weekend from Kansas City to spend time and golf with their father, Kyle Crawford.

Several returned on Thursday evening. Jeanette Chrisman visited her sister, Jessie Asher on Thursday evening at La Plata Nursing Home. Also visiting last week was her brother. Lavon and Jackie Eitel spent Wednesday and Thursday in Hamilton with Todd Eitel and family and helped combine wheat. Ryan and Toni Tuggle and children were Sunday dinner guests of Janet and Stella Tuggle. Sunday evening guests of Verna Buck were Bobby Buck, W.R. and Barbara Buck and Eva, Mike Buck, Bobbi Hamlin, Eddie Buck of Kirksville and Barb Englehard of Marceline. Willie Tuggle is a patient at Quincy Blessing Hospital after falling at work on June 11th and breaking his leg. He will undergo more surgery on Monday evening, June 18th.

As I wrote the items tonight we had a quick rainstorm and it brought about 7/10 of an inch of rain. The Rose of Sharon is blooming and the Queen Anns lace is blooming. Summer time is officially coming this week. Gary and Nancy Belfield, Richard and Sharron Burns attended the Friday night entertainment on the square in Kirksville. They enjoyed the Ladies Barbershop Quartet that sang. Sharron Burns attended the Atalpal 2 club meeting this last Thursday at the Red Rooster in La Plata. Franklin Greenstreet of Elmer visited Roger and Mary Jarman this past week. Donna and Jerry Gray attended the ballgames for Chase, Zachary and Alaina Gray this past week. Frank Dugan and wife, Chelsey delivered the Sunday message at Gifford Christian Church. He is a recent graduate of Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly. After the garage sale Saturday, Connie Perry, Niki Couch and children and Christy Bristow visited Pearl Perry in La Plata Nursing Home. Sharron Burns attended the Back to School Fair planning committee meeting in Macon on Wednesday. The Fair will be held on August 4th at Macon Expo. Oklahoma Indians 4-H Club met on Tuesday evening at La Plata Baptist Family Life Center. The Village of Gifford held its council meeting last Thursday. They discussed the property that needed cleaning up in the town. Attending were Dean and Neva Aholt, Ronda Van Hara, Donna Gray, Cynthia Draken. Visitors were Tina Hubbard and Cecil Storer.

Macon County Federated Women’s Club Meet Macon County Federated Republican Women’s Club met at noon June 14, 2012 at the Apple Basket restaurant. Jane Thompson, president, opened the meeting with a welcome to the members and guests. Sue Williams gave the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. We began the meeting with two area coordinators, Philip Arnzen, for the Scott Rupp for MO Secretary of State followed by Brett Dinkins with the Shane Schoeller for Secretary of State campaigns. Each talked about their respective candidate’s background and vision of the political landscape. Rupp is currently serving as a MO State Senator representing Lincoln and St Charles Counties.
Schoeller is Speaker Pro Tem of the MO House of Representatives and is in his third term representing the 139th district. Kathy Austen, secretary, introduced speaker John Dunham, Superintendent of Macon R IV schools. Dunham gave an interesting program about teacher tenure, how it works along with the pros and cons of how tenure contracts affect the teachers, the school, and the student. Dunham also touched on Race to the Top and Common Core Standards; two federal initiatives designed to standardize curriculum and student testing in the US education system. Following the program vice president Bonnie Morris gave the minutes from the May meeting and treasurer Rowena Young reported that the club has 46 paid memberships and 11 associate memberships. The next meeting will be July 12 at the Apple Basket restaurant; program yet to be determined

On Saturday, June 16th the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department pulled together and stood once again at the intersection of Brown and Moore Streets seeking donations for the Jerry Thomas Family. People stopped to toss money in their boots as the department worked all four stop signs bringing in funds for the cause.

With summer here, work zones are popping up all around. While work zones may cause delay for motorists, they help keep motorists and workers safe while improving transportation. Barrel Bob is the oversized mascot that helps MoDOT spread the message about work zone safety, and he has come to Kirksville! “With sidewalk construction taking place near the south shopping center, we felt it was important for Barrel Bob to have a presence in this area to help remind motorists of the importance to slow down in work zones, and be aware of the work that is going on around them,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Amy Crawford. On Thursday, June 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. anyone that would like to stop by will be given the opportunity to have their picture taken with Barrel Bob. They will also receive “reminders” that will help them remember to slow down and pay attention in work zones. “For safety, we are asking for those that stop by, to please park in the Shriners’ parking lot and walk in the grass to the area where Barrel Bob is located,” Crawford added. Tallman-Baker Reunion Descendants of Clarence Tallman and Ora Maude Baker gathered at the La Plata Masonic Lodge in La Plata, Missouri on Sunday, June 3, 2012. The oldest living relative is Clara Tallman Anderson of Homer, Alaska. She is 106 years old. Gathering were Richard and Sharron Burns of La Plata, Robert and Sondra Tallman Mason of Hale, Reva Stiles of Kirksville, Jim and Laurel Curry of Bucklin, Trudy French of Kirksville, Cindy Pipes and Etta Marshall of North Kansas City, Shane and Amber Tallman of Moberly, Dustyn and Jessi Tallman and daughter, Penelope of Moberly.
Do you know what your great, great grandfather done to raise his family? Where was your mother’s mother born? What about the origination of their parents? It may surprise you that the majority of people don’t know these simple things about their ancestors. The Macon County Historical Society has been compiling information for researchers that are working on their family trees. For over 2 ½ years a small group of volunteers have worked very hard to catalog and inventory histories of many families, churches, school records, census, probates and wills. Most of the records are in Macon County with some leading to Randolph and other surrounding counties. The Genealogy Department in the Historical Society has the largest library of books and information, over 1,000 volumes and growing. “We are very fortunate to be able to house the original probate and wills” says researcher Ruth Masten, “we also have plat maps and cemetery records”. The researchers are working on completing a military history and County History. George Morgenweck, Genealogy Director, has a hobby, what most may call a daunting task, of collecting old newspapers. George clips and catalogs all of the obituaries, family reunions, weddings etc… to keep on hand. “Everyone is welcome to use the material here to help them with their search” states George, “You don’t have to be a member of the Historical Society to do so”. George even gives classes on Genealogy. If you have ever wanted to start your own family search, his classes will help you learn where to start and what to look for. Pat Teter, researcher and former librarian, has utilized her skills in helping with the organization and inventory process of all the material. “All of our books are now inventoried” says Pat. “We started 2 ½ years ago with just a pile of books”. Today, the researchers have access to many books, indexes and numerous sites online. They are there to assist and guide you in your search. “If you are interested in your family, you will be amazed to what you will find” states Gail Shoush, Researcher. “We have an open door policy for the public” says George Morgenweck. The Macon County Historical Museum is maintained and supported by donations. The researchers volunteer their time to help. All donations go the “general fund” that helps pay the utilities and maintenance on the building to keep them going. Even if you are new to the search of your ancestors, this is a place to start. Hometown Hero Challenge Next week I will be writing an editorial on “Hometown Heroes”. My memories of heroes might be different than yours, so, I would like to propose a Challenge! Send my your stories, send me your photos, send me your memories of your very own Hometown Heroes. My heroes might be several people from a teacher, my dad, my boss, my child, my babysitter, the man down the street who saved my dog, or the veteran next door. But the “Life and Times of Becky”, are so much different than the “Life and Times of You”. I want you to send my your story, your memory, the way you saw it. Doesn’t matter who it was, someone in your life that you owe your life to, your families life, your toy wagon’s life, or anyone who has given you the memory of a “great act of kindness” that you remember, no matter what age you were or where you lived. I will not be changing or editing your stories, that’s your job, I have a hard time keeping up with my own, so send it in the way you want it read in the paper.
