INTRODUCING…. SHEENA BERRY
CIRCUIT JUDGE GREEN RULES The Home Press North edition has recently hired a new sales representative, a native from Atlanta, Sheena Berry began hitting the sidewalks in April. Sheena Jean Berry is the daughter of James and Lisa Berry of Atlanta, Missouri. She is the proud mother of two children, EmmaRose Diane Young, age 5 and King Henry “Xavier” Doenges, age 2. Besides work, Sheena enjoys cooking, riding bikes with her children and writing with her 5 year old. She is now the lead sales representative for the Home Press and is looking forward to meeting all the local merchants and advertisers in the area. “Feel free to give this hometown girl a call”, states Berry.
Circuit Judge Daniel Green ruled in favor of Missourians for Health and Education in the case challenging the summary statement and fiscal note summary prepared for the initiative petition. The proposed petition initiative would help address Missouri’s health, smoking and school funding problems through a proposed $.73 tax increase per pack on cigarettes and an increased tax on other tobacco products by generating an additional $283 million in new revenue annually. “We are pleased that the Court’s ruling approved of the summary prepared for our measure and protects the process which allows citizens to influence policy in Missouri,” said Misty Snodgrass, director of government affairs for the American Cancer Society. Show-Me A Brighter Future, a coalition of Missouri organizations and individuals led by the American Cancer
Society, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and other educational and health organizations, submitted nearly 220,000 Missouri petition signatures to the Secretary of State for certification that call for a tobacco tax increase initiative to be included on the November ballot. Revenue from the tobacco tax would be split three ways, with an emphasis on providing new funding for Missouri schools: · 20% of revenue would fund muchneeded prevention and cessation programs for smokers who want to quit and to keep kids from starting to smoke. · 50% of revenue would go into Missouri’s elementary and secondary education classrooms. New funding for elementary and secondary education would help prevent staff reductions and increased classroom sizes. · 30% of revenue would go to Missouri’s colleges and universities. New
funding for higher education will support educational opportunities for tomorrow’s workforce and future caregivers. Show-Me A Brighter Future is a diverse coalition of Missouri organizations and individuals, led by the American Cancer Society, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and other educational and health organizations that has proposed a statewide petition initiative that will help address Missouri’s health, smoking and school funding problems through a $.73 tax increase per pack of cigarettes and increased taxes on other tobacco products. Increasing the price of tobacco products is a proven way to decrease smoking rates and will generate an additional $283 million annually in new revenue for Missouri schools and to fund smoking prevention programs.
