NOVINGER CITY WIDE YARD SALES THIS WEEKEND Town-wide yard sales will be held in Novinger on Saturday, April 28th. The sales will begin at 8:00 a.m. The event is coordinated annually by Novinger Renewal, Inc., a non-profit corporation established for historic preservation and community betterment.

Atlanta Principal, Robin Carter, challenged Atlanta students to raise $1,000.00. If the students raised that amount, Carter would kiss a farm animal, which was a cow. Thirty-eight students in grades Kingergarden-8 participated in the MathA-Thon for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, which is located in Memphis, Tennessee, and treats children with catastrophic illnesses at no cost to families, for a year total of $2,564.96. Their 6-year total is $9,100. The money raised this year will pay for two ultrasounds at St. Jude’s.
Church Without Walls Announces Winners From Easter Egg Hunt
Spring Turkey Season opened on Monday, April 26th with a decrease statewide of 830 birds. Local counties reporting kills were: Adair County with 48 Adults and 7 Juveniles for a total of 55, up 3 from last years 52; Knox County with 24 Adults and 6 Juveniles for a total of 30, down 7 from last years 37; and Macon County with 45 Adults and 8 Juveniles for a total of 53, down 20 from last years 73. The top three counties were Adair/ Monroe with 55, Randolph with 54 and Macon with 53.
MODOT EMPLOYEES SHOW THEIR CARE Missouri Department of Transportation employees showed they care for others in a generous way by contributing $171,279 in the annual Missouri State Employees Charitable Campaign. This is the fifth consecutive year MoDOT has came in first. The campaign is organized by the Missouri Office of Administration to provide state employees with a unified, but voluntary, fundraising drive for charitable organizations. Overall, Missouri state employees raised a total of $1,077,000 for 1,069 local, state and national non-profit organizations during the campaign.

Church WithOut Walls of Atlanta has announced the prize winners at their annual Easter Egg Hunt held Saturday, April 7, 2012. Children of all ages were invited to attend the annual outreach event including teenagers and adults. The morning’s rains subsided at the scheduled start time of 11:00 A.M. The event was opened with prayer. The grand prize for the children’s division was three bicycles. Two of the bikes were donated by Macon’s WalMart. The winners of the raffle drawing were Harley Bergfield, Keel Wooten and Owen Baker. Other prizes included skate passes to the Macon Skate Center, movie passes to the Macon Cinema, passes to the Maples Repertory Theater, pool passes from Macon’s Comfort Inn, a grocery gift card from Prenger’s Foods, three iTunes cards and two gas cards. This free outreach event also included a hot dog lunch for the children and families. The all-beef hot dogs were donated by Richard and Jackie Thomas of Madison. More than 5,000 eggs and goody bags were be scattered throughout the yard at 619 S. Williamson in Atlanta. Local teens and adults assisted with the event by packing eggs for the kids. Livestock Resources
I think it would be a good time to discuss some livestock resources available from University of Missouri Extension that you may not be aware of. Hopefully you will put these to memory if you don’t need them right away. The 1st one I want to discuss is AI portable breeding barns. They are available as a single or a double unit and can be rented for your use. The cost to rent them is $25 per day for the single unit and $50 per day for the double unit. You can rent them from the Sullivan County Extension Office in Milan or the Research Farm at Novelty. Don’t wait too long if you’d like to use them this year. Another resource in Columbia is the Veterinarian Diagnostic Lab.
Now I’m not suggesting that you don’t go through your local vet first but if they have a difficult case or you have an animal that they’re not an expert with the lab can assist you in those situations. They are open and staffed 24 hours a day. There is a charge depending on the animal involved, etc. (a calf post-mortem is $90) but it might be well worth it if you can’t get an answer otherwise. Their phone number is 573.882.6811 and they provide other tests (corn aflatoxin as an example). REMINDERS Keep in mind the deadline is fast approaching to get your Century Farm in (May 1st). The program is co-sponsored by University of Missouri Extension and Missouri Farm Bureau.

MoDOT Asks Motorists To “Rate Our Work Zones” As the road construction and maintenance season begins, motorists are seeing highway work zones popping up across the state and new signs are being put in place to help solicit feedback. MoDOT’s job is to make the work zones clear to understand and navigate, and above all, safe. Part of the ongoing process to continually improve work zones is to solicit feedback from those traveling the roadways. This year, new signs will ask drivers to “Rate Our Work Zones.” “We are placing these signs near the beginning of work zones as a way to encourage motorists to tell us what they think,” said Julie Stotlemeyer, traffic liaison engineer. “Once motorists safely reach their destinations, we want their feedback on what it was like to travel through the work zone.” MoDOT is looking for the public’s opinion on a variety of work zone details – including clear and understandable signing, channelizers and barrels providing proper guidance, and whether or not the work zone caused motorists any delays. “We are working to have these signs displayed not just for construction projects, but on maintenance activities as well,” said Stotlemeyer. “You might not
see the sign at every work zone, but we want to use them where they will serve as a reminder to motorists that our survey is out there if they have time to fill it out.” The purpose of the signs, and the work zone surveys, is to maintain an exemplary level of customer service. The department uses those survey results to evaluate work zones, look for ways to improve them and meet customer expectations. With funding reductions causing a drop in MoDOT’s construction budget, some motorists will encounter fewer large construction work zones this year, as the focus is shifting to taking care of the system. However, every work zone, no matter how large or how small must be given a driver’s undivided attention. “Ultimately, we want to make our work zones safe and keep motorists moving through them with the smallest delay possible,” said Stotlemeyer. All motorists traveling through a work zone are encouraged to participate in the online survey at www.modot.mo.gov/ workzones/Comments.htm Remember to pay attention when approaching a work zone and always buckle up!

Plant propagation is the process of multiplying the numbers of a species, perpetuating a species, or maintaining the youthfulness of a plant. There are two types of propagation, sexual and asexual. Sexual reproduction is the union of the pollen and egg, drawing from the genes of two parents to create a new, third individual. Sexual propagation involves the floral parts of a plant. Asexual propagation involves taking a part of one parent plant and causing it to regenerate itself into a new plant. Genetically it is identical to its one parent. Asexual propagation involves the vegetative parts of a plant: stems, roots, or leaves.

Letter Carriers Food Drive - May 12 On the second Saturday in May - May 12, 2012 letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will deliver much more than mail when they walk and drive along their postal routes. They will also collect the goodness and compassion of their customers participating in the 20th annual National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger” - the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The efforts of letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFLCIO), with the help of rural letter carriers, other postal employees and numerous other volunteers has resulted in delivery of over one billion pounds of donations to community food banks and pantries over the past 19 years, including 70.2 million in 2011. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations left at mail boxes and in post offices for delivery to local community food banks, pantries, and shelters. Nearly 1,500 local NALC branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam are involved in the drive. Camping weather is on the way, yippeee!!! I’ve been looking at campers, well I should say toyhaulers, wanting to possibly make a change and purchase a toyhauler to haul our atv’s and sleeping unit with one truck instead of having to make multiple trips or take two vehicles. My father and I enjoy camping and riding atv’s in the summer months and would like to make it easier to get there and back. That being said, wow!!!! I have been looking at toyhaulers and campers online. Some of these units are nicer than my apartment and some are nicer than a new home. One I looked at, not that I was considering buying it, was over $94,000.00. Good grief. This unit had two bathrooms, a washer/ dryer hookup, a walkin closet in the master bedroom, a bar unit in the living area, a ceiling fan, an electric fireplace and an outside bbq grill with a refrigerator, sink and tv and a refrigerator inside that was bigger than mine at home. I think I might stick to what I own, its paid for. But its fun to look.... And maybe dream. I sometimes go to Mobile Home Sales as well and go in and out looking at the great new kitchens and bedrooms, they can work wonders with a mobile/factory built home. Some of these are amazing. But I mostly like to go to camper sales and look inside, take that concrete walk between unit to unit and go inside to see all the new and wonderful added amenities in these massive mobile monsters. I think to myself, when I win the lottery, haha. But, then I would have to buy a bigger truck, and I like mine, its paid for. I’ve
JEFFCOAT always told my kids when I retire I’m gonna drive to Sara’s house first, plug in my RV, use her electricity, her washer/dryer, raid her fridge, watch her cable, use her bathroom and stay oh, about a month I guess, and then move on to Sammie’s house and start over and then to Sky’s house and do it again... payback is going to be fun. Now if I can just afford that relaxing and glorious home on wheels. Gotta start saving so I can start mooching off those kidooos. Oh I might stop somewhere in between destinations and relax a bit, however with my luck all my kids will be living in La Plata, so looks like a short drive, but hey, I’m saving on gas and mileage. So I guess if I wanna go somewhere to relax, I’m gonna have to leave “little LA”. I guess my father and all the snowbirds know what they are doing when they go south for the winter. But luckily and happily, my dad’s on his way home from Florida. It’s about time, I missed him. Time to get that camper cleaned up and the atv’s ready for summer time fun. So, hurry home pops and drive safely. To all of you that are campers and atv riders, lets get those things cleaned up and go have some fun!!! Keep It Kool, Bec
Northeast Missouri Livestock Person Of The Year Applications Due May 1 Applications are now being accepted for 2012 Northeast Missouri Livestock Person of the Year. According to Bruce Lane, University of Missouri Extension Livestock Specialist, applications are open to residents from any of the following counties in northeast Missouri: Adair, Clark, Knox, Lewis, Linn, Macon, Monroe, Pike, Putnam, Randolph, Ralls, Schuyler, Scotland, Shelby, or Sullivan. The individual receiving this award must have made a significant contribution to the livestock industry in northeast Missouri and/or beyond. Eligible applicants can be producers of livestock, agribusiness personnel, agency personnel, or agriculture researchers. Other parties who have been long-time supporters of the northeast Missouri livestock industry will also be considered. The selected applicant will become a member of the Northeast Missouri Livestock Producers Hall of Fame and will be inducted at a ceremony at the Missouri Livestock Symposium to be held in Kirksville on December 7-8, 2012.

Jesus lived a life of humility and love for others. So ought we. To those who do not have Christ in your life, this is what those who know Jesus as Savior ought to be living. But we are not perfect. We still do things that are wrong. We still let words slip out of our mouths that should not. We still do things that are harmful and hurtful to others. We confess that we do these things. We are sorry that we still do them. We are trying to live the life that Jesus instructs us to live. But it is not easy even for those of us who have been in church all our lives.

A new 150th history of La Plata was written by current and former La Plata residents. PASTOR THOMAS Sin is still within us. We ask for you forgiveness and we ask that you give us another chance. Weather has been nice earlier this past week. It turned cool this weekend. We even experienced frost this week. The La Plata Community Fire Protection District met Monday evening at the Depot Inn. New board members, Ray Ivy and Danny Smithson, were sworn in. They reorganized the board with James Replogle being elected as President, Ray Ivy as Vice President, Richard Burns as Secretary-Treasurer. Martha Rhein of Columbia and Sharron Burns met for lunch at Diner 54 in Kirksville Thursday. They enjoyed seeing the La Plata Sesquicentennial Scrapbook which Sharron is finishing. Tuesday Carol Bryant and Adaline Newcomer visited Marilyn Sinnock. Friday Connie Gunnels visited Pearl Perry at La Plata Nursing Home. Dimple-Lockett celebrated her birthday this weekend. Visitors included Howard, Tawyna and Fairy Worcester, Alvie Bowers, Butch and Karen Manigold. Kevin Pipes and Charles Howe called on Marilyn Sinnock this weekend. As Deadly Cat Disease Spreads Nationally, MU Veterinarian Finds Effective Treatment Lone Star ticks, which are notorious carriers of many diseases including cytauxzoonosis, or “bobcat fever,” have been spreading across the nation in recent years. As a result, cats across much of the country are now exposed to the deadly disease. University of Missouri veterinarian Leah Cohn, a small animal disease expert, and Adam Birkenheuer from North Carolina State University, have found an effective treatment for the dangerous disease. “Previous treatment methods have only been able to save less than 25 percent of infected cats, but our method, which is now being used by veterinarians across the country, has been shown to save about 60 percent of infected cats,” Cohn said. “While that number isn’t as high as we’d like due to the deadly nature of the disease, our method is the first truly effective way to combat the disease.” Cohn and Birkenheuer also found that bobcat fever can even infect tigers. All types of cats, but only

cats, can catch bobcat fever. Cohn calls the disease the “Ebola virus for cats,” saying that it is a very quick and painful death for cats that succumb from the infection. Bobcat fever is easily spread between cats through tick bites, but Cohn and Birkenheuer found that the disease is not readily passed down through birth like malaria and many other protozoan diseases. Cohn says the best way for cat owners to prevent their cats from catching bobcat fever is to keep them indoors as much as possible. Early symptoms of the disease include sluggishness and refusal to eat. Pet owners who also have dogs should use tick collars, because while dogs are not susceptible to the disease, they can bring infected ticks into contact with house cats. Cohn says tick preventatives for cats also can help, but owners should be sure to check with their veterinarians to make sure they use cat-specific products, as tick collars for dogs can be harmful to cats.

The Seibert Club of La Plata, attended the Volunteer Luncheon at the La Plata Nursing Home as a group on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Following the bountiful luncheon, they held their regular meeting in the Activity Room of the Nursing Home. President Marsha Yahl opened the meeting with prayer and led the devotions: “Laughter And Tears” by Barbara Johnson, taken from the book of Isaiah, and Two Pigs and a Giraffe by Patsy Claremont, taken from the book of Matthew. Secretary Betty Cribb conducted the Roll Call of “A Household Hint” or “A Tongue Twister”, and then read both the February and March minutes. These minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Leila Ward gave the Treasurer’s Report, which was also approved as read. A letter of thanks for paper products and trialsize toiletries was read from Victim Support Services. We discussed plans to continue our support of both Victim Support Services and the La Plata Library each year. There was a report of our March Work Day. There was discussion of our upcoming “Guest Day” on May 9, which will be held at the Baptist
Family Life Center. We have invited the Porter FCE Club to meet with us. Seibert Club members will be there early to set up tables, chairs, decorations, etc., and volunteered for various lunch items: Pasta salad, iced tea, and mints, Marsha Yahl; Leila Ward will buy a ham, cook it and make rolls; Kathy East, deviled eggs; Dora Lovingier, dessert; Irene Osborn, jello salad; Betty Crib, pineapple/cheese salad. In addition, Leila will share her cut flowers for the tables; and, Dora will have devotions. The program will be given by Colleen Liebhart of New Boston, on Aprons. Everyone is invited to bring an apron to share. There was a collection for the Treasury and the Club Collect was read. Everyone brought articles to share for the Program: Betty Cribb - “A Dog’s Diary” and “A Cat’s Diary”; Irene Osborn - “Fun Facts About Your Body”; Leila Ward - “Remembering the Clothesline”; Kathy East - “2.99 Senior Special” and “I Can’t Believe We Made It”; Dora Lovingier - “Historic Outhouse 1943 and “Power Outage”. The meeting was adjourned with the next meeting at noon, May 9, at the Baptist Family Life Center.

Meeting was called to order by the president Irene Osborn with the repeating of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Missouri Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call was answered by my favorite bird. Minutes of the last meeting was read and approved. Treasures report was given. No old business New business: Purchasing flowers to be planted in front of the Christian Ministeries Store. Irene Osborn is
going to get the flowers. We had two sick people , Enid Moots and Donna Kelly. We sent them cards. Carol Hays Birthday was this month. Didn’t receive her gift but she will as her birthday isn’t until the 23rd. Penny drill was won by Betty Forbes. The Hostess gave a program on feeding the birds. Was very interesting. Games played were American History Trivia won by Leila Ward and a word game won by Betty Seidt. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess.

The Builders, a men’s group from the Illinois Bend Community Church held a “meeting of the minds” on Thursday, April 19th and this reporter caught them sharing words and discussing the Bible at Grandma’s Home Cookin’. Those attending were Duane Turner, Charles Allen, John Davison, Tom Mitten, Keith Wait and Earl Fast.
I stumbled upon five beautiful faces drinking coffee and spending the morning together at Grandma’s Home Cookin’ on Thursday, April 19th. Sara Beth Fouch, Ella Clem, Beverly Billings, Marie Collum and Donna Hinkle were, I’m sure, sharing interesting facts and probably some fiction to their coffee hour. It was great to see everyone enjoying the day.

Volunteers Take To The Road For Adopt-A-Highway Program
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Bruce Nelson today announced that the sign-up deadline for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has been extended to April 13, 2012 due to strong interest. After the CRP general sign-up ends on April 13, FSA will evaluate offers based on cost and the Environmental Benefits Index (EBI). The EBI takes into consideration variables such as wildlife habitat,

water quality protection, soil erosion reduction, air quality protection and other enduring benefits. Accepted offers will become effective Oct. 1, 2012. CRP is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them use environmentally sensitive land for conservation benefits. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resourceconserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion and develop wildlife habitat. In return, USDA

provides participants with rental payments and costshare assistance. Contract duration is between 10 and 15 years. Producers with expiring contracts and producers with environmentally sensitive land are encouraged to evaluate their options under CRP. Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA service center or visit FSA’s website athttp://www. fsa.usda.gov/crp for additional information regarding CRP.
With spring here, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers have already begun to take to the roads picking up litter. With 403 adopters covering 610 miles, the Northeast District will have several volunteers on the roadsides over the next few months. We ask that the traveling public be aware of the volunteers alongside the road, and drive safely. These volunteers are what help keep Missouri’s roadsides beautiful yearround!

Atlanta Baseball Host Scotland County The Hornets hosted Scotland County on Monday, April 16th taking a loss, 5-11. Marty Halley pitched 5 innings giving up 6 runs, 4 hits, 2 home runs and a strikeout. Scoring for Atlanta was Mick Garnett, 2-3, R, Lane Waddle and Dylan Hruska both doubled. Atlanta is now 6-6 . Atlanta hosted Schuyler County on Tuesday, April 17th adding yet another loss to their dugout with a score of 3-7 in 11 innings. Lance Weber took the loss for the Hornets. Scoring for the Hornets were Dylan Hruska with a double and scored in the 3rd, Mick Garnett also had a double and scored and Lance Weber singled and scored in the 5th. The Hornets are now 6-7 overall.
