City Promotes Cory Cook To Electric Supervisor The City of La Plata held a special meeting on Monday, April 2, 2012. Those present were Mayor Charles Thompson, Alderman Charles Allen, Alderman Dennis Jones, Alderman Bill Adams, Alderman Trent Perry and City Administrator Dickie Brown. Meeting Called to Order Mayor Thompson declared a quorum present and called the meeting to order at 5:40 p.m. Executive Session
Alderman Allen made a motion and seconded by Alderman Perry to move into executive session at 5:40 p.m. The vote as follows: Alderman Allen – aye, Alderman Jones – aye, alderman Adams, aye and Alderman Perry, aye. The motion carried. Alderman Jones made a motion and seconded by Alderman Adams to offer the Electric Supervisor position to Cory Cook with an in-
crease of $1.00 after 90 days probation. The vote as follows: Alderman Allen – aye, Alderman Jones – aye, alderman Adams, aye and Alderman Perry, aye. The motion carried. Alderman Adams made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to advertise for the position of electric lineman for 14 days. PROM TIME Brashear Prom will be held on Saturday, April 21st at the Kirksville Country Club. Grand March will begin at the Brashear High School at 5:00 p.m. La Plata Prom will be held on Saturday, April 21st at Silver Rails Event Center in La Plata. Grand March will begin at the La Plata High School Gym at 6:00 p.m. Atlanta Prom will be held on Friday, April 27th at the Comfort Inn in Macon. Grand March will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Atlanta High School.
TROOP B TO PARTICIPATE IN ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces on April 18 and 19, 2012, Troop B will be working with members of the Missouri Operation Lifesaver program in Macon, Randolph, Shelby, and Monroe counties to raise the awareness level for railroad crossing safety and trespass prevention. This will be accomplished by Operation Lifesaver team members talking with motorists briefly in advance of certain railroad crossings. Team members will be reminding drivers about railroad safety tips as they approach these crossings. Operation Lifesaver team members will consist of members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, NS Railway, BNSF Railway, local law enforcement agencies, Moberly Area Community College Law Enforcement Training Center, Missouri Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and Operation Lifesaver volunteers. Over the past two years, four crossing crashes have occurred in these counties resulting in two fatalities. In addition, two trespass incidents have resulted in two fatalities during the same time period. During 2011, crossing crashes in Missouri increased by 17% with fatalities rising from eight to 13. The La Plata Bulldogs hosted the Canton Tigers on Thursday evening, April 12th. The ‘dawgs came up short on the scoreboard with Canton pulling out the win 4-2. More local sports is on page 8A.
La Plata Christian Ministries Receives Donation La Plata Christian Ministries Food Distribution Center Receives Donation From Festival of Sharing. The Festival of Sharing has sent La Plata Christian Ministries Food Distribution Center a contribution of $100. The checks were sent to seventy agencies across Missouri to alleviate hunger in the state. Donations sometimes lag at this time of year when we are between the winter holidays and before produce becomes available from area gardens. The Festival of Sharing is an interfaith gathering held on the Missouri State Fair Grounds on the third Saturday of October each year. This fall will be the 31st event, which in recent years has involved persons from 30 faith denominations. The Festival of Sharing has gathered and distributed 22.25 million dollars of cash and material gifts for needy people in Missouri and around the world. This year the Festival of
Sharing will be held on October 20th. All activities will be held at the State Fair Grounds in Sedalia, Missouri. Each year hundreds of youth participate in the overnight “YouthFest” event. Then spend the day providing hands on mission at the Festival by helping unload material gifts and by packing trucks with gifts used here, at home, and overseas. There will be a Quilt Auction to raise funds for the Church World Service Blankets+. Tons of beans and rice and a tractor trailer load of potatoes will be bagged for distribution to needy people in Missouri. Festival participants will also join in worship and will find fellowship at the Festival’s Food Court, display and craft sales areas. YOUTH TURKEY SEASON
Shay Cooper, age 12, of Albany, Missouri shot a 22 lb. bird during the Youth Turkey Season, Sunday, April 1st while hunting with his father, Darryl Cooper in Gentry County. The bird had a 9 inch beard, 1” spurs and was shot with a 12 gauge with a 3.5“ mag.

The City of La Plata met in regular session on Tuesday, April 10th. Those present were Mayor Charles Thompson, Alderman Bill Adams, Alderman Dennis Jones, Alderman Charles Allen, Alderman Trent Perry, City Administrator Dickie Brown, City Clerk Bobbie Jacques, Kim Moore, Cheryl Curtis, Sally Moore, Frannie Curtis, Sean Herron and Josh Curtis. Meeting Called to Order Mayor Thompson declared a quorum present and called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Jeremy Lobdell gave the invocation. City Administrator Dickie Brown requested the Board of Aldermen add an item to the Agenda. Alderman Allen made a motion and seconded by Alderman Perry to add Item D. Golf Course Feasibility Study to the agenda under Old Business. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Visitors Comments La Plata Promotional Committee: Sally Moore addressed the Board of Aldermen with an update regarding the La Plata Promotional Committee’s progress on the Soybean Festival. Building Variance: Josh Curtis requested a building variance for a carport at his residence located at 207 East Colbern.
Kim Moore-Fireworks Stand: Kim Moore requested the city allow fireworks be discharged from Jun 29th until July 4th, instead of July 1st to July 4th. After discussion the Board of Aldermen requested Kim Moore bring additional information to the May 8, 2012 meeting giving citizens of La Plata time to review the request. Consent Agenda Regular Meeting 03/14/12, Special Meeting Minutes 03/17/12, Special Meeting Minutes 04/02/12, Bill Payer 201204, Utility Coordinator Monthly Report, Tax Coordinator Monthly Report, Park and Recreation Monthly Report. Alderman Allen made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to approve the Consent Agenda. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays, there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Mayor and Board Committee Report No discussion was held. Administrator Report Financial: The City Administrator Dickie Brown informed the Board of Aldermen he had reviewed the monthly financial report. Old Business Welcome to La Plata Signage: Administrator Brown informed the Board of Aldermen he had contacted MoDOT regarding a “Welcome to La Plata� sign. The cost of two signs to be placed at each entrance into the City of La
Plata would be $2,100.00. The consensus of the Board of Aldermen was that the City could not afford to purchase the sign, and it was suggested a fund raiser be held to cover the cost. Administrator Brown requested the Board of Aldermen authorize a feasibility study regarding the Golf Course. Aldermen Allen made a motion and seconded by Alderman Perry to authorize the feasibility study on the Golf Course. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. With no further business the Mayor closed the meeting at 6:30 p.m. Official Certified Election Results The City Clerk read the official election results. Mayor: Charles Thompson – 131 and Dusty Sawyer – 65 Alderman Ward 1: Charles Allen – 54 and Sean Herron – 59 Alderman Ward 2: Trent Perry – 68 Swear In Elected Officials: The City Clerk swore in the newly elected officials and they took their seat at the council table. Mayor Thompson declared a quorum present and recalled the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. New Business Utilities Vehicles: Administrator Brown submitted a fuel management feasibility study. Administrator Brown reviewed
with the Board leasing John Deere Gators to lower fuel cost. The study reflected an annual savings of $11,563.20. The consensus of the Board was not to purchase the John Deere Gators at this time. Administrator Brown informed the Board of Aldermen he had been notified that Tri-County Electric would be increasing electric rates. The TriCounty increase will not affect the citizens of La Plata. City Clerk Scholarship City Clerk Jacques informed the Board of Aldermen that she had applied and received a scholarship to attend Missouri Association for Court Administration 2012 Annual Conference. Construction Violation City Administrator Brown informed the Board of Aldermen the Department of Natural Resource had fined the City of La Plata $5,000.00 for beginning construction before the construction permit was issued for installation of the new generators. Alderman Adams made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to pay the Department of Natural Resource $5,000.00 for the construction violation. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Executive Session Alderman Jones made a motion and seconded by Alderman Herron to move into executive session at 7:20 p.m. The vote as follows: Alderman Adams – aye, Alderman Herron – aye, Alderman Jones – aye and Alderman Perry – aye. The motion carried. 88th Birthday Celebration
OBITUARY Mary E. O’Connell Mary E. O’Connell, age 92 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the La Plata Nursing Home. Born March 2, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Albert and Mary E. (Wurtz) Krause who precedes her in death. Also preceding her in death was one sister, Anna Wolf and one brother, William O’Connell. Surviving is one sister, Alberta Collins and husband Leland of La Plata, Missouri; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and greatgreat-nephews; including one niece, Judith Romanski and husband Joe of Pennsylvania and one nephew, Leland D. Collins and wife Joanne of New Jersey. Mary lived most all of her life in Pennsylvania where she was a member of St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. For the past twenty-five years she lived in La Plata with her sister, Alberta. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Travis Funeral Chapel. Memorials in memory of Mary E. O’Connell may be made to the La Plata Nursing Home or to the Alzheimer’s Association. They may be sent to or left at Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S. Edward (Bucky) Pavlovich will celebrate his 88th birthday on April 28, 2012. Bucky was born and raised in Mareceline, Missouri to Edward and Pearl (Baer) Pavlovich. He lived there until entering the military. He married Ann Naughton of La Plata, Missouri on October 28, 1950. This weather is like a top-si tur-vey daily wonder. I don’t know how to dress for it. I turn the heat off then turn it back on. I open the windows then shut them. Even had the air conditioner on once already. I love the breeze coming through the windows, the smell of rain and spring and listening to the birds. But............ this tornadic crap is for the birds, (no pun intended to our feathery friends). Kids are always calling, what should we do? Should we stay home? Should we take cover somewhere? Are you going somewhere? Where are you going? I usually sit still, unless someone calls and insists I go. Here’s my take on a tornado. God is my friend, my father, my maker and my future. If he wants me, he knows where I am. I don’t wanna be in a shelter or basement full of other people that maybe he doesn’t want. Why should those innocent bystanders be in harms way if I’m the target. So its 1/2 of one, 6 of the other, up in the air, take your pick, stay home, take shelter, or just go to bed and sleep it out. Maybe you wake up and maybe you don’t. If you don’t I guess you probably never felt anything, anyway I’m hoping if its my time and the “Big Guy” is looking for me, he’ll just take me while I’m under the sheets and have no idea what’s going on. On the other hand (this is the 6 of the other), am I ready? Yes and No. Yes.............. I’m ready to see my mama, bless her

Just got my first grandbaby, got lots to teach her to get back at her mama, so I need to hang out for a bit and get my revenge. hehe Tornado’s are a spur in my side. They scare me and they calm me some, but I’d rather not have to make a decision to stay home or go elsewhere, so........... Mother Nature, if you are listening, just keep ‘em. Praying for our safety is all I can do. But I do want to take a minute for all of us to say a small prayer or a big one, for those in Oklahoma and Kansas who had to endure the nasty weather over the weekend. My thoughts and prayers are with you, I’ve been through it and its not something I would ever ever ever wish on someone else. From The Mayor’s Desk Spring cleanup time is here. The City of La Plata offers yard waste service on the last Tuesday of each month beginning in April and running through November. April 24th will be the first date this year. You must have limbs and twigs cut into four (4) foot bundles, which can be easily handled by one person. Also, leaves must be bagged and in clear bags. BLACK BAGS AND UNCLEAR BAGS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. Please separate these yard waste items from your regular trash. If any form of trash is found in yard waste, it will not be picked up. Large, clear bags are available at City Hall for a cost of $1.00. Bulk pickup day will be May 18th for noncommercial customers only. Warning! The city dumpster located by the street shed and behind the fire station is not for public use. A review of normal trash pickup rules will remind everyone that such items as appliances, dirt, cement, batteries, used oil, tires, building materials,

We have problems with a great amount of limbs being placed out for the City to handle or dispose of. We are asking, that if you have a tree removed by a contractor, then have the contractor remove the leaves, limbs and the trunk. If you remove a tree yourself, then contact City Hall so that we can open the old land fill so you can transport the waste. If this is not satisfactory, you will have to cut and bundle the waste.

Pastor’s Corner In the Gospel of John, the twentieth chapter, verse 19-31, we have the story commonly referred to as the “Doubting Thomas” story. Thomas gets a lot of grief for doubting, but is he really any different than us? The disciples were behind a locked door. They locked the door because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. But Jesus came through the locked door and came to the disciples. Thomas was not with them this time. But eight days later the disciples gathered again in a locked room. This time Thomas with them. Jesus came through the locked door this time also. Is your heart locked up from others? Maybe you keep your heart locked up from others because of fear. We are afraid to let anyone in because of the pain others have brought into our lives. We are afraid to let anyone into our hearts because of the wrongs done to us before. We are afraid to let anyone but we are also afraid of putting ourselves out there where we can be hurt again. Jesus wants to come into your life just as he went into the room where the disciples

Women’s council met at Atlanta Christian church April 11 with 16 ladies present. Dawn Moore opened the meeting with prayer. Women’s Day at Central Christian College of the Bible was discussed. Crossroads Christian Church will be holding a “Young at heart’ workshop on April 26 from 9Am to 3PM. A thank you note was read from Safe House for the things we gave them. Mother’s Day gifts were discussed. They will be assembled at the next meeting. Bags of snacks were fixed for our 7 college kids. Prayer requests were given and Ruth Sullivan led in prayer. Nancy Stroppel, formerly of the Anabel area spoke about her book “ See the Salvation of the Lord” , about the farming crisis in the 1980s. Ruth Sullivan served refreshments.

April Is National Child Abuse Prevention Month In 1998, the United States Department of Justice began an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force to address the growing problem of Internet-related exploitation of children. The ICAC Task Force laid the foundation for what would become a nationwide partnership of law enforcement agencies with the mission of protecting children online. Currently there are 61 ICAC Task Forces located across the United States representing over 2,000 federal, state and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies. Since its inception, the ICAC Task Force program has investigated over 280,000 complaints of alleged child sexual exploitation and arrested almost 30,000 individuals. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect. The ICAC Task Force Program is an important partnership that focuses its efforts to protect children on-line and hold offenders accountable. The ICAC Task Force investigators are committed to working tirelessly to strengthen police relationships and promoting awareness and participation in order to produce positive results that help make the Internet a safer place for America’s children. The Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (MO ICAC) is managed by the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department and is comprised of 118 affiliate criminal justice agencies across the state. As such, these agencies work closely together to see that criminals are brought to justice. MO ICAC is funded by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and serves criminal justice agencies and citizens of Missouri by offering investigative, forensic and prevention training in an effort to fight online child exploitation. Online child sexual exploitation offenses include the possession, distribution and creation of child pornography, using the internet to facilitate child prostitution, as well as attempts by individuals to lure and travel to meet children for sexual encounters. Sharron Burns enjoyed watching the senior high track team play in the Atlanta Track Meet on Wednesday. Oklahoma Indians 4-H Club met Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Karen and Walter Manigold hosted an Open House for about 25 family and friends to celebrate Fairy Worcester’s 95th birthday Sunday. Oklahoma Indians 4-H The Oklahoma Indians 4-H Club met at the La Plata Baptist Life Center at 6:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Skylar. Pledges were led by Trista and Tanner. Roll called was given by MaKenzie. Six people answered. The minutes were read by MaKenzie. They were approved. Treasurers report was given by Tanner. Our World vision project collected an additional $1.80. Fair books should be available by April 15, 2012. The NEMO Fair Board has decided that every 4-H member is going to have to pay $15 per ticket. The 4-H Achievement Day will be May 19, 2012. Five of our members are hoping to go to the 2011-2012 4-H camp. Our club will be planning to clean the stream on April 20, 2012 around 3:30 p.m. We will also be helping with the La Plata Post Office Food Drive on May 12, 2012. The NEMO Fair will be held July 16, 2012. Our club will be registering the member’s projects on July 16, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. Birthdays this month are Matthew, Skylar, and Janice. Members present were MaKenzie, Madison, Matthew, Skylar, Tanner and Trista. Leaders present were Sharron, Julie and Jennifer. The next meeting will be May 8, 2012.
Ask The Agent Column Can I hunt coyotes all year? No. Coyote season is closed during daylight hours April 1 through April 15 this year. The coyote season is closed from April 16 through May 6, which is the spring turkey season. If a youth hunter gets a turkey during the youth season, can they get another turkey during the regular season? Yes. A youth hunter may harvest two legal birds and must follow the same limits as an adult hunter, however, if the youth harvested a legal bird during the youth season, they may only harvest one more bird and must wait until the second week of the regular season before hunting again. They cannot hunt during the first week of the regular season if they have already harvested a bird. I am scared of snakes, is it legal to kill them? No. Most people do not realize that snakes, native to Missouri, are considered wildlife and are protected by Missouri’s Wildlife Code. Often times when you encounter a snake it is startling. The snake is not any different, as it is also startled. Usually if you leave the area for a few minutes the snake will do the same. Most snakes are non-venomous and all are beneficial to have around. A snake’s diet consists of insects, spiders, and rodents (such as mice, rats, and moles).

of Clubs and Organizations Plata met Tuesday, April 3rd at 6:00 p.m. in the La Plata Christian Church fellowship hall with six members weighing in. Ginger led the meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges and the “TOPS Rededication Song” led by Karen C. Roll call was “did you journal, did you lose weight and did you exercise?” Answers for exercising varied from stretching fence wire to bending over looking for four-leaf clovers. The important thing is to keep moving. Best “TOPS” loser was Barb Y. and runner up was Ginger. Best KPS loser was Barbara G. Janet handed out low calorie Easter candies, marshmallow bunny poles and fuzzy decorative chicks. Veva gave each member an Easter card. Janet’s program was “seven strategies that conquer cravings”. If we lose over the Easter weekend we get an extra punch on our punch cards. A filled punch card will pay a month’s dues. Our weekly challenge is to do all things in moderation. We are looking forward to Gail being back with us soon. We closed with the “TOPS Goodnight Song”, led by Karen C. Anyone interested in visiting or joining TOPS is welcome. American Legion & Auxiliary Post American Legion & Auxiliary met March 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Legion Hall for their regular meeting. Commander George Ritenour called the meeting to order opening with prayer followed by the Pledge to the flag and the preamble in unison. Alma Baker, pro-tem, presided over the auxiliary meeting. Roll call was answered by nine members present. Minutes were read and approved. Reported on Girls State, Erin Boren, American Legion, MaKay Belt, La Plata State Bank and Naomi Larsen, Lions Club with Molly Safley as alternate. Butch Naughton introduced the guest, Petty Officer 1st Class Janie Williams that was home on R&R and soon to return to Afghanistan. She presented a Flag to the Legion and gave an interesting talk. Other guests were Greg and Judy Williams, Janice Williams and son and Tyra Douglas, Mr. Patel and son, who all joined the legion. Members present were Verna Buck, Debbie Becker, Mary Plumlee, Bob and Alma Baker, Magaret Kincaid, Ed and Linda Swinney, George and Mary Ritenour, Wanda Sederwall, Jean Naughton, Leland Collins, Ambrose Williams, Clyde Burch. Missouri Highway Patrol Investigate Accident A one vehicle accident occurred at 1:55 am about 3 miles south of Bevier on Hwy C. A 2001 Ford Pickup driven by Brenden J. Linear, 17, of Macon was traveling northbound on Hwy C. Linear ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Passengers in the vehicle were Devon Schubert, 17, and Sierra Short, 18, both of
Macon. Devon Schubert was thrown from the vehicle and taken to University Hospital in Columbia, MO by staff of life helicopter while Linear and Short sought their own treatment. Those assisting the Missouri State Highway Patrol at the accident were the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Bevier Fire Department and the Macon County Ambulance.

Macon County Sheriff’s Report A Tax Whose Time March 26, 2012 deputies arrested Joseph Collins age 21 of Macon. For an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear. He was unable to post the required $9,000 bond. March 26, 2012 a resident of Atlanta, reported the fraudulent use of her debit card at retail store in Houston, Texas. Investigation continues. March 26, 2012 deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in the 600 block of Argonne St. in Bevier. Upon arrival the parties were separated, and arrangements made for the victim to leave the residence. March 27, 2012 deputies responded to a residence in rural La Plata, regarding a large amount of cash being stolen from a gun safe inside the home. The scene was processed with evidence being forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Investigation continues. March 27, 2012 deputies responded to the Thomas Hill Lake Conversation Area, regarding property damage. Upon arrival deputies found two vehicles that had been vandalized by breaking out the window glass of both vehicles. The scene was processed, and investigation continues. March 28, 2012 a resident of Callao reported the theft of prescription medications from her mail box. Investigation continues. March 29, 2012 deputies responded to the 29000 block of Jaguar St to a citizen report of trash being illegally dumped. Deputies
found the leftover items used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. The items were seized as evidence, processed and the investigation continues. March 30, 2012 deputies arrested April LaChance age 35 in the 500 block of N. Ruby St. in Macon. For an outstanding arrest warrant for Passing Bad Check - Less Than $500. She was processed at the Macon County Jail, and she posted the required bond pending her court appearance. March 30, 2012 deputies responded to a business in Callao regarding a possible burglary in progress. The building was searched and secured. The Missouri State Highway Patrol K-9 unit attempted to track the suspect. The scene was processed and investigation continues. March 31, 2012 deputies responded to Atlanta to a citizen traffic complaint of a semi-truck being parked in the roadway on Hornet Ave. Contact was made with the owner, and the truck moved. March 31, 2012 deputies responded to the 28000 block of Southwest Blvd. regarding shots being fired from the roadway. Upon arrival deputies found three adults and one juvenile located near a bridge, investigation determined that 3 of the subjects had been firing a large caliber revolver from the roadway. The case was forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for filing of formal charges. April 1, 2012 deputies responded to the 26000
block of Orbit Rd, in Anabel, to investigate a possible domestic assault that taken place earlier. Deputies interviewed the suspects and witnesses, with the information being forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for the of filing formal charges. April 2, 2012 a citizen came into the Sheriff’s Office to report her rear license plate as missing or stolen. April 3, 2012 deputies from the Macon and Linn County Sheriff’s Offices arrested Sam Smothers Sr. for an outstanding arrest warrant for Statutory Rape-1st Degree-Sexual Intercourse with a Person Less Than 14 Yrs. Old. This arrest is the result of an investigation that began in 2009. Smothers remains incarcerated in the Macon County Jail with a $100,000 cash only bond. April 3, 2012 deputies responded to the 18000 block of First Street in South Gifford, regarding a burglary at a residence. Missing from a building located on the property were tools and vehicle license plates. The scene was processed, and the investigation continues. April 5, 2012 deputies arrested John Friedhoff age 32 of Kirksville for an outstanding warrant from Boone County for passing bad checks. Friedhoff was processed at the Macon County Jail and posted the required $4500 bond. April 6, 2012 deputies discovered David Prenger, age 32 of Macon attempting to smuggle drugs into the Macon County Jail.

Arrested were Lynette Roberts, 21, of Kirksville and Frank E. Salsberry, 22, of Novinger. Roberts was arrested for a warrant from Adair County. She remains in the Adair County Jail on a $25,000 cash only bond. Salsberry has been charged with possession of a controlled substance- methamphetamine. He is being held in the Macon County Jail on a $50,000 cash only warrant. More charges for both and other individuals are pending. April 8, 2012 deputies responded to a residence in rural La Plata, regarding a burglary at the residence. Deputies processed the scene, and the investigation continues. April 8, 2012 deputies responded to the 35000 block of Kestrel Ave in Macon, regarding property damage. The reporting parties’ mail box had been damaged. Deputies processed the scene, and the investigation continues. April 9, 2012 deputies arrested two under age subjects for Minor in Possession of Alcohol. Both subjects were transported to the Macon County Jail where they were booked, fingerprinted, photographed, issued summons, and released to their parents.
Chris Koster is Missouri’s Attorney General Like you, I am against raising taxes in Missouri, particularly in a weak economy. But there is one exception whose time has come – Missouri’s cigarette tax. The Missouri General Assembly should give Missourians a chance to vote on a moderate cigarette tax increase. The current situation is well-known. Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax among the 50 states, at 17 cents per pack – a rate established almost twenty years ago. The highest cigarette tax state, New York, places a levy of $4.35 on each pack. The 25th highest cigarette tax state, Iowa, places a tax of $1.36 on each pack. Even tobaccoproducing states like South Carolina and Kentucky have higher cigarette taxes than Missouri. The current budget and health problems facing our state are equally well-known. Missouri spends more money under Medicaid to provide health care for smoking-related illnesses than we collect from the entire cigarette tax. In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control estimated that tobacco-related illnesses cost our state’s Medicaid program $532 million, and these costs have only skyrocketed with inflation. Yet, Missouri collected just $90 million last year in cigarette taxes. Viewed through this lens, the General Assembly is subsidizing sick smokers more than $400 million annually. Under current tax law, Missouri has become an enterprise zone for cigarettes. To our legislative leaders, I would say this: The cigarette tax is going to increase. Missouri will not remain in 50th place for very much longer. I propose raising the cigarette tax by 73 cents per pack, placing Missouri 33rd out of 50 states. The $400 million in new revenue should be directed to building Missouri’s educational infrastructure, with particular emphasis on higher education, and addressing our state’s health care needs. Such a proposal should be placed before the people next November, so that Missourians themselves may decide. Fifteen years ago, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office settled its landmark case against Big Tobacco. That settlement marked the turning point in public sentiment regarding smoking-related risks, and it has brought over a billion dollars into Missouri’s General Revenue fund over the last decade. Nonetheless, because Missouri’s cigarette tax is the lowest in the nation, our state’s smoking-related health challenges remain among the country’s highest. The General Assembly should take action before the people are forced to act on their own behalf through the initiative process. Our state should utilize this money in a way that provides real economic benefit for our citizens. To miss this opportunity is to fail in our responsibility as elected leaders of Missouri.

During the Brashear vs. Green City baseball game on Monday, April 9th, Bradshaw throws one over the plate. He took the 5-15 loss for the Tigers.
The Brashear Boys Baseball team hosted the Green City Gophers on Monday, April 9th ending with a loss of 5-15 to the Gophers. Scoring for Brashear was Bradshaw, Pflum, Clarkson, Housman and Smith. Bradshaw took the loss for the Tigers. The Tigers hosted the North Shelby Raiders on Tuesday, April 10th and once again fell short at the plate with a score of 7-8 to the Raiders. Scoring for the Tigers was Housman with 4 runs, Bradshaw with two runs and Hines with one. Housman took the loss for the Tigers.
Atlanta Baseball The Atlanta Baseball team hosted the La Plata Bulldogs on Monday, April 9 falling just one run short of the ‘dawgs for a loss of 5-6. Scoring for the Hornets were Hruska 2-4, R, Lane Waddle 2B, Collan Thrasher, HR, 2RBI and Ethan Baker 2-4, 2B(2). The Hornets are now 3-5 overall. The Atlanta Hornets hosted a doubleheader with Bucklin on Tuesday, April 10, winning both games. The first contest was won 17-0 in five innings with Lance Weber being the winning pitcher. Weber also hit 3 home runs, a double and 6 RBI’s. Ethan Baker had one home run and 3 RBI’s. In the second game Atlanta took the prize again with a score of 13-1 in five innings. Zach Brown was the winning pitcher. Kaleb Tipton was 2-3 at the plate with a double and 2 RBI’s. The Hornets are now 5-5 overall. On Thursday, April 12 the Hornets placed Linn County and won the game 9-2 after the official calling of the game in the 5th inning due to rain. Mick Garnett was the winning pitcher with 6 strikeouts, 2 bases on balls and 1 error. Lance Weber and Ethan Baker both doubled. The team is now 6-5 overall.
