On Friday, January 27 the Brashear Tigers hosted the Canton Tigers on the hardwood. The orange and black lady Brashear Tigers powered their game to the end with a final of 67 to 61. Brashear led the entire contest going to the locker rooms at half time with a score of 37 to 27. Scoring for the Lady Tigers were Olivia Thompson 5, Shelby Salter 24, Ashley Moncrief 2, Meredith Thomas 26, Alexa Acton 3, Chandi March 2 and Nikki Moncrief 5. The boys game did not end in the same tone as the Brashear Tigers fell to the Canton Tigers 41 to 77. Scoring for the Tigers were Nick Bradshaw 4, Joseph Woods 5, Hayden Housman 6, Sam Smith 3, Taren Treasure 6 and Joe Clarkson 17.
Thursday, January 26, 2012, Macon County Sheriff Robert Dawson received a phone call from the detectives of the Washington Parish Louisiana Sheriff’s Office stating they had information a murder suspect Jerry Ronald Graves, date of birth, May 26, 1976 was visiting family at at location in the La Plata area.
At 2:30 p.m. deputies from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, an officer from the La Plata Police Department and troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol went to the location in La Plata and made contact with a family member, and it was determined the subject was in town. Sheriff Dawson said “A short time later the suspect was observed in a vehicle, officers conducted a vehicle stop and captured without incident.” The suspect Jerry Ronald Graves is currently being held in the Macon County Jail without bond, and is awaiting extradition back to Louisiana. The agencies assisting in the capture of the suspect were Macon County Sheriff’s Office, La Plata City Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
La Plata Police Assist In Murder Suspects Arrest On January 26, 2012 the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office in the State of Louisiana contacted the La Plata Police Department in reference to a 1st degree murder suspect possibly residing in the La Plata area. A joint interagency law enforcement team comprised of the La Plata Police Department, Macon County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to a targeted location and apprehended the suspect without incident. Below is the story that was posted November 8, 2011 by Fox News 8 in Louisiana.
Washington-Parish Man Found Stabbed To Death The mayor of this small town in Washington Parish calls a recent murder one of the worst things that’s happened there in almost 70 years. Sunday morning, 63-year-old Tilly McCain was found by his grandson, lying on his kitchen floor and stabbed to death. Investigators believe whoever perpetrated the crime possibly knew the victim, according to Deputy Criminal Chief Scott Blair of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. And they think McCain tried to fight off his assailant. McCain had only moved into his home four months ago. Investigators say they are interviewing family members, friends, and any acquaintances of McCain’s. They’re hoping the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab’s investigation will reveal more evidence in the case.

City Of La Plata Sells Property The City of La Plata met in regular session on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in the council chambers. Those in attendance were: Mayor Charles Thompson, Alderman Bill Adams, Alderman Dennis Jones, Alderman Charles Allen, Alderman Trent Perry, City Administrator Dickie Brown and City Clerk Bobbie Jacques. Meeting Called to Order: Mayor Thompson declared a quorum present and called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Alderman Charles Allen gave the invocation. Alderman Allen made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to place two items on the agenda for discussion and action, golf course chemicals and
insurance review. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays, there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. There was discussion regarding water loss within the city. Mr. Brown informed the Board of Aldermen the water department was aware of the loss and was doing everything to locate the source. Old Business: The City Clerk opened the bids regarding the fire station bids submitted as follows: Dickie Brown $5,100.00 Birney Belfield $4,002.00 Ronnie Bragg $3,576.00 Joel B. Cagle $3,000.00 Alderman Adams made a motion and seconded by Alderman Allen to accept the bid submitted by Dickie Brown for $5,100.00. Wood Stove Pipe Extension: There was discussion regarding smoke from a wood stove being a nuisance according to City Ordinance. Administrator Brown informed the Board of Aldermen the City would no longer receive payment for property in the crop reduction payment program this is a loss of revenue of $7392.00. Golf Course Chemicals: Alderman Perry made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to approve the bid submitted by Van Diest. On a call by the chair for ayes and nays, there were 4 ayes and 0 nays. The motion carried. Insurance Review: Administrator Brown informed the Board of Aldermen the city departments were in the process of reviewing the insurance values assessed to equipment. Resolution: Resolution authorizing the filing of an application with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, State Revolving Fund Program for loans under the Missouri Clean Water law (Section 644, RSMo) Alderman Perry made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to approve resolution 2012-01. The City of La Plata has a new City Administrator after the retirement of Ray Ivy on December 31, 2011. Dickie Brown traveled to Missouri landing in our small town from the large and raging sounds of Omaha, Nebraska. What makes someone move to a town the size of La Plata? This reporter met with Administrator Brown on Friday, January 27 at City Hall where I was greeted by the girls in the office and the Mayor before making contact with Mr. Brown, who was smiling from ear to ear and eager to meet me. This I must say was the most I’ve felt welcomed in city hall since 1999, when I originally bought The Home Press. Mr. Brown was reared in the St. Louis area and did his undergraduate work at Bellevue, Nebraska University in Management. After finishing at Bellevue he attained employment with the National Park Service (NPS) and was there for over 30 years. After several years of working in public service Brown developed a passion for serving his

The City of LaPlata held a special meeting Jan. 25 in the council chambers. Mayor Thompson called the 3 p.m. meeting to order. Also present were Aldermen Charles Allen, Dennis Jones, Bill Adams and City Administrator Dickie Brown. Alderman Perry arrived later. The Mayor advised the Board of Aldermen that golf course manager, Tom Cupp has resigned. The aldermen approved 4-0 to advertising locally for a golf course manager for 30 days. Discussion was held regarding furnishing water to the new Fitness Center owned by Donnie Sizemore. The aldermen voted 4-0 to furnish water to the Sizemore Fitness Center. Meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
community in civil service. Going back to school in his fifties he graduated in 2010 from the University of Nebraska with a Masters in Public Administration. Upon his retirement in December 2011 from the National Park Service he traveled to Missouri making La Plata his first stop with his Public Administrator’s career. Brown stated that even though he has held only one career in civil service, he has had several opportunities with the NPS with 12 years in maintenance and 10 to 12 years in law enforcement. He and his wife, Gail are residing in La Plata, which he says is a happy medium between their kids and grandkids. The oldest of his children, a daughter and her family reside in St. Louis, his oldest son and his family in Colorado Springs, Colorado and his youngest son and his wife in Fremont, Nebraska. The Browns have six grandchildren. After visiting a while about his journey to La Plata, we discussed some of his priorities for the city. Short-term priorities that Brown will be working on are improving the outreach of communica-
tions with the city and the community by way of newspaper, the city website and the current Facebook page for crutches. He is advertising an Open Dialog hoping and inviting community members to stop by and visit, introduce themselves, voice opinions and concerns and spend some time getting to know him. He plans to reach out to you and wants you to feel welcome and at home, after all it’s “your city hall”. The budget is another concern of the newly employed Brown, he is working with limited resources to manage and will be trying to maintain and answer the questions of “where are we spending money and is it appropriate?” Implementing a Street Improvement Project is another one of Brown’s short term priorities. He says the city is looking for some serviceable used equipment to help with that goal. I discussed the abilities of grant writing within the city with the new administrator, who confessed that grant writing was not one of his strongest abilities, but he will be working to strengthen his weakness. There are several projects Brown has in mind
to help improve the city. For instance, he stated that MoDOT has a grant called “Safe Walk to School” focusing on sidewalks, he will be looking further into that adding that the Santa Fe Lake dam is leaking and he is currently looking for funds to fix it as well. Restoration of the City Park is on the list with a need for refreshing up equipment and adding some color. Brown said when he and his wife arrived in town that was the first thing to catch their eye, he says it’s a great park and is a real nice focal point for the city, which he intends on nourishing to his fullest capabilities. Long term visions for the city that spark his eye are those of “transforming the City of La Plata into a destination community that provides exceptional recreational, economic, educational and residential opportunities. Brown is excited to be in La Plata and has made his commitment to manage the community in a professional, transparent manner that fosters community engagement. I thank Mr. Brown for his time and his commitment to the City of La Plata and look forward to working with him in the future.
Gilbreath-McLorn Trustees Meet Four members of the Board of Trustees of the Gilbreath-McLorn Home met at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Chair Ann Bullock presided over the meeting. The Minutes were read and approved. All bills have been paid. A CD was transferred to the La Plata State Bank. Old Business - Alpha Beta Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will be having the Easter Egg Hunt on the Home grounds March 31, from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M. William Schwartz has finished putting up the new gutters, downspouts, and drainage pipes going away from the house. He said we need to use grass killer and gravel ant the end of the pipes so the weeds and grass won’t get into the pipes and stop them up. He did not paint the South porch stairs because of the cold. We will get an estimate on work to stop the leak in the NE corner of the attic at the bottom of
the window. New Business - The tea for the La Plata High School senior girls, sponsored by the Upsilon Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will be held Sunday, February 26, from 12:30 - 4:00 P.M. at the Home. They will need access by 11:30. Nancy will put something in the lawnmowers so they won’t freeze. Laura Love will do the taxes again this year, and she has helped with other matters. Activities - Bob Cox has asked if we would have a booth at the Bridal Show to be held at the Silver Rails Event Center on Jan. 22. It was decided not to this year, but to possibly prepare something for other years and other presentations. An April tea was discussed for those interested in the Home. There is a woman who is knowledgeable about antique clothing that we
will contact to help with some of Olive’s clothes. The next meeting will be February 2, at 3:30 P.M., at the Home. Meeting adjourned at 5:00 P.M.
OBITUARY CAROL ANN FREELS Carol Ann Freels, age 65, of Kirksville, MO, passed away Monday, January 23, 2012, at 2:37 p.m., surrounded by her family, at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO. She was born July 23, 1946, in Hannibal, MO, the daughter of Lewis Vernon and Frances H. Hughes Purdy. On December 29, 1967, she was united in marriage to Larry Freels at Shelbina, MO. He survives. Carol Ann is also survived by one daughter Kimberly Ann Young and husband Bryan of LaPlata, MO; two grandchildren, Landon and Brandon Young of LaPlata, MO; one stepgranddaughter, Ashley Young of Eldridge, MO; one sister by heart, Anita Ivey of Richland, MO; two aunts, Maurine Thompson and Oneita Purdy both of Shelbina, MO; her special pet Tinkerbell and several nieces, nephews and cous-
ins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Carol Ann was a 1964 graduate of Shelbina High School and was a member of the Shelbina Christian Church. She was employed by the Shelbina Democrat, the Daily Guide in Waynesville, MO and for twentyone years she worked side by side with her husband at the Kirksville Daily Express. Carol Ann enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Visitation was held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at the GreeningEagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, Missouri. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the GreeningEagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, Missouri with Minister Jim Bilbro officiating. Burial was at the Shelbina Cemetery.

Missouri University of Science and Technology announces the names of students who made the honor list for the 2011 Fall semester. They are: Nathan Czuba of Macon, Mo., a senior in architectural engineering; Marc Fagan of Marceline, Mo., a senior in mechanical engineering; and Evan McWilliams of Leonard, Mo., a freshman in engineering. It was thoughtful and kind of your to take the time to share your memories of Bill with us. Your words were not only a comfort, but a source of strength us in this difficult time. Oh my goodness, where should I start? My mind wonders ALL the time. Wheels are always spinning and questions are always pondering without the simple conclusion of the answer I want or the answer I think it should be. This will be the first of a weekly column, which will be somewhat professional at times, witty at times, ridiculous at times, sincere at times, but most of the time, other than not, it will just be my thoughts, which I know are sometimes scary! But deal with it or just simply turn the page. Most recently The Home Press has decided to venture into an endeavor of Northeast Missouri. Beginning with next weeks issue, The Home Press will be divided into two editions. The Home Press North and The Home Press South. Yours truly will be publisher/editor of The Home Press North, as I always have been and hope it will be the beginning of a long journey on the road to some of Knox County and Adair County. I will be covering three schools, Atlanta, Brashear and La Plata. The Hornets, Tigers and Bulldogs will be printed in their entirety of sports, students of the month, school board minutes, programs and all the scandals I can find, well there probably won’t be much of those. Pretty calm around our area and most of the drama I couldn’t print anyways. We will be covering Atlanta, Elmer, Gifford, La Plata, Brashear, Novelty, Millard, Kirksville and Hurdland. I love these towns, I was so outta place at the south end of Macon County, so I am glad to turn those reins over to Kathy Liebhart, who will be covering the new edition of The Home Press South. She will be printing local news from Bevier, New Cambria, Callao and Bucklin schools and will be exploring the additional communities of Anabel, Excello, Ethel, Macon and Jacksonville. The Home Press is the oldest paper in Macon County. We are here to concur the county and explode the news, community events and happenings, along with those weekly and historic articles already submitted by our correspondents, who we all appreciate and look forward to their writings. My family was raised in the Gibbs/Brashear area, so therefore I am no stranger to the county roads connecting my home town to those I’m covering. My mother, God Rest Her Soul, was a Smith and my father, who is currently enjoying the relaxation of the Florida sun, which he deserves, is a Laird. They both gradu-

However, during their high school days they played sports and had friends all over the area, so I know just about everyone or have heard of you, so be very careful (giggle). I’m not much of a shy blond, very happy most of the time and full of bloops and blunders, but I always mean well. I love love love my job and want this paper to be the best paper in the four counties we are serving. Woops, I forgot to tell you that there is a third paper affiliated with us. The Press News Journal of Canton covers Lewis County. They will also be making their rounds up into Knox County, so its 4 counties in all that you can cover with this paper. Adair, Knox, Lewis and Macon. What a deal. I just wanted you to know that his blond holds no prisoners when it comes to the press. I enjoy attending and participating in local events and if I’m not there, well you didn’t tell me. So speak up!! Call me!! Let me know what’s happening!! It will be my honor and pleasure to report your happenings, print your family photos, your pets, your new pedicure (if that’s what you want), that deer you shot or even that possum you ran over, yum yum. So make sure you watch for our free classified coupons and subscription coupons in the paper. Be sure to say hello if you see me out, keep me informed or just tell me one of those ole fishing stories of yours. You never know where you’ll find me squattin’. I find pleasure in those little coffee shops with the conversation and gossip and love to be entertained by the opinions of others. Submitted Photo The Missouri Department of Conservation will be offering its fifth annual Discover Nature Girls Camp. It is a free three-day, two-night girls camp aimed at introducing young ladies ages 11–15 to different outdoors skills in a supportive learning environment. In 2012, the camp will be held July 10, 11, and 12th. The camp is held in Monroe County at Mark Twain Lake State Park. Campers spend three fun filled days learning by participating in a “hands on” hunter education class; shooting firearms and archery equipment, and taking the hunter education test. Throughout the camp, the girls will participate in a variety of outdoor skills such as canoeing, orienteering and fishing. Campers learn about all aspects of fishing; from fish identification, casting, tying knots, and cleaning fish, to finally going fishing. This all occurs in a group setting of their peers, being taught by knowledgeable instructors who make participants comfortable and willing to try new things. The camp is limited to 60 girls between the ages of 11 to 15 years old. CHICKEN AND CORN CHILI 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 1 (16 ounce) jar salsa 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon chili powder salt to taste ground black pepper to taste 1 (11 ounce) can Mexican-style corn 1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans DIRECTIONS Place chicken and salsa in the slow cooker the night before you want to eat this chili. Season with garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook 6 to 8 hours on Low setting. About 3 to 4 hours before you want to eat, shred the chicken with 2 forks. Return the meat to the pot, and continue cooking. Stir the corn and the pinto beans into the slow cooker. Simmer until ready to serve.
SLOW COOKER PORK ROAST 1 large onion, sliced 2 1/2 pounds boneless pork loin roast 1 cup hot water 1/4 cup white sugar 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon ketchup 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 dash hot pepper sauce, or to taste DIRECTIONS Arrange onion slices evenly over the bottom of the slow cooker, and then place the roast on top of the onion. In a bowl, mix together water, sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, ketchup, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and hot sauce; pour over roast. Cover, and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours, or on High for 3 to 4 hours.

Buck, Eddie Buck of Kirksville and Barb Englehard of Marceline and Brad Buck. They were celebrating Bobby and Mike’s Birthdays.
Friends and family also enjoyed cake and punch Thursday evening at La Plata Nursing Home in honor of Bobby’s 85th Birthday. He also enjoyed a phone from Dakota McKenzie stationed at Fort Bragg and is soon to be deployed to Afghanistan. Denzil Thomas and members from Atlanta Methodist Church conducted services Sunday January 22 at La Plata Nursing Home. Louise Gaughan assisted and also visited Marteena Gunnells. Jackie and Lavon Eitel visited Marteena Gunnells and Bobby Buck Sunday at La Plata Nursing Home. The community extends sincerest sympathy to Roger Shaver and Nancy Heck in the death of Roger’s nephew Troy Lawrence last Tuesday.

As we should in January we received 1 and ½ inches of snow on Friday. It came with a lot of slush and sludge and was very heavy. The temperatures have held in the 20 and 30’s so most of the snow is still on the ground. Many many area residents have had or are having the crud virus that seems to be going around. Macon County Sheriff’s Report 01-07-12, Joshua A. Kidd, age 39, of Macon, turned himself into the Sheriffs Office on a Macon Co. arrest warrant. He is charged for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He posted a $9000.00 bond and was released pending court appearance. 01-12-12, a deputy arrested 24 year old Patrick McKinley, of Macon, on a Macon County arrest warrant. He is charged with failure to appear for a bad check charge. He was unable to post $1172.26 bond and was incarcerated in the Macon County Jail pending his court appearance. 01-13-12, a deputy arrested 42 year old Carl J. Livingston of Bevier, on two civil warrants for failure to appear. Livingston was incarcerated in the Macon County Jail pending the next availably court date. 01-16-12, a deputy investigated a reported property damage at the Bevier School. The glass in a door was broken from an unknown object. There was no other damage to the building and the case is under investigation. 01-17-12, John R. Friedhoff, 32, of Huntsville, Mo. turned himself into the Sheriffs Office, on a Macon County arrest warrant. He is charged with passing a bad check over $500.00. He was processed and posted a $13000.00 bond and was released pending his court appearance.

Club News Atlanta Community Club The Atlanta Community Club held its regular monthly meeting on January 23rd with nine members and one guest present. A potluck dinner was served, followed by a short business meeting. The president, Virginia Grubbs, was in charge. Regular reports were heard and other items of business resolved. It was announced that the next meeting would be held on February 27 at 12:00 noon. Those in attendance were Gene and Donna McClanahan, Clifford and Virginia Grubbs, Allen and Ruth Murphy, Betty Baker, Mary Pflum, Lila Wiggans and the guest, Kathy Baker. Atalpal II Meets Twelve members of Atalpal II met at a local restaurant at 4:00 p.m. on January 12, 2012, with Jean Bruce as hostess. Two guests were present, Donna Kelly and Pam Wares. President Sharron Burns opened the meeting with the pledges to the American Flag and to the Flag of the State of Missouri. The November and December’s meetings and party were read and approved. Treasurer’s report was given. Money was sent to the Christian ministry. 2012 dues are now due. Report approved. Courtesy - A card was sent to Blanche Meeks because she suffered a fall. Correspondence None. Old Business - The nominating committee of
Lenora Grear, Mary Plumlee, and Jerry Prather presented the slate of officers for 2012. P resident - Sharron Burns, First Vice Pres. - Peggy Loe, Second VicePres. - Paula Thompson, Secretary - Becky Mohan, Treasurer - Shirley Smith, Parliamentarian - Wanda Sederwall, and Historian/Journalist - Maurine Crawford. Mary Plumlee moved that the slate be elected unanimously. Jean Elliott seconded. Motion passed. Sharron Burns suggested that it might be helpful if members cell phone numbers were added to the home lines in the yearbook. A sheet was passed around for everyone who wished to add their cell phone number. New Business - The FLPP will be sponsoring the Winter Flea Market and Soup Luncheon Jan. 28 from 8:00 A.M -3:00 p.m., with the flea market being at Christy’s Auction Service, and the luncheon at the American Legion Hall. Donations may be sent to Cindy Moore, and all proceeds go to the refurbishing of the Green Theater. Since Atalpal II had money-raisers for the theater in the 70’s and early 80’s, members were asked if they would like to help with this project. A sign-up sheet was passed around to be signed by those able to help. The Valentine Party will be held February 9, with Sharron Burns and Marie Collum as hostesses. Best TOPS loser was Linda J. and runner-up was Gail. Barb Y. handed out our most recent TOPS and KOPS address and telephone listings. Our program was given by “Miss Topsiy Turvey� (AKA) Carol Hines, TOPS MO492 Kirksville. Carol told the club about her weight loss journey
starting in 1971 when she joined TOPS. At that time she reached her goal, dropped out and regained. Carol rejoined TOPS in 1993 and again reached goal. In 2000 the shoe factory closed. She and her husband went into craft making as a business. In 2003 she rejoined TOPS and is nearly to goal, having lost over 100 pounds from her highest weight in TOPS. Carol gave tips on foods, portion control, nutrition and will power that works for her. Carol brought gifts for all our members. SCHOOLS / SPORTS Local Student Participates in 72nd Session Of Missouri Boys State Kyle Evan Larson participated in The American Legion Boys State of Missouri June 11-18 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Larson was selected based on his leadership, citizenship, academics, and character during his junior year at La Plata High School. Boys State is a pure democracy in that all citizens may vote and are eligible to hold office. The program is designed to educate and train Missouri’s young leaders in functional citizenship, leadership and government. Nearly 1,000 student leaders build an entire state government in a single week. Larson’s accomplishments including positions held and awards earned at Missouri Boys State include: Citizen of Gambrel City; Member of the Nationalist Party; Deputy Sheriff; Delegate to State Convention, Ward I; and Business Owner. Larson attended Law Enforcement School while participating in Boys State. Larson is the son of Blake and Tori Larson and was sponsored by
American Legion Post 282 - La Plata. Sponsors afford the opportunity for students to participate in this nationally recognized program and are critical to its continued success. Organizations, businesses, and individuals interested in becoming a sponsor are encouraged to contact the Missouri Boys State Headquarters at 1-877342-5627. The tournament was held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disneyworld in Orlando, FL. The players are Nate Durdle, Zach Simon, Bradley West, Sam Gonzalez and Jayton Johnson. Jessica Vargas is the coach of the team. Bradley West is the grandson of Frank and Diana Scott of La Plata.

Senior at LHS, Justin Riggins signed a “Letter of Intent� to play baseball with North Central Missouri College in Trenton, Missouri. Riggins is shown with his parents, Russ and Trisha Riggins, La Plata Baseball Coach Jesse Wolf, La Plata Superintendent Steve Carvajal and Head Baseball Coach for Trenton, Donnie Hillerman. The sanctioning body governing the athletic program is the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 16, which includes schools from the entire state of Missouri. Athletic eligibility is determined according to NJCAA regulations.
