City of La Plata Special Meeting The City of La Plata will hold a Special Meeting on Wednesday, January 25th at 3:00 for the purpose of “Golf Course Manager”. The meeting will be held at the Council Chambers.
Lions Club - On Saturday, January 21st the La Plata Lions Club held their annual Soup, Chili and Pie Supper. Several hungry customers from Northeast Missouri enjoyed the meal.
Steve Carvajal of La Plata High School has been selected by the NFHS Coaches Association to receive the 2011 Coach of the Year award at the state level in the sport of Baseball. The NFHS Coaches Association is the official national coaches association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The NFHS recognizes coaches at the state, sectional and national level.

Macon County Moving Forward On Lease With MoDOT
Macon County, the City of Macon, Macon County Economic Development Corporation staff and MoDOT, are working together to provide space in the former MoDOT District II Office for the creation of new jobs. “We are very excited to be working with potential employers to provide additional office space for jobs in our county,” said Macon County commissioner Jon Dwiggins. A lease agreement with Macon County was signed by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission at the last meeting to authorize the lease with an option to purchase. “We’re pleased the Highway Commission took this approach as it allows us to offer space for start up businesses and job creation,” Dwiggins said. There is already one com-
pany interested in moving into the former district office. Macon County will be given up to 10 years to create new jobs equal to value of the property. Once the total combined salaries created by the new positions are equal to the present market value of the property, the ownership of the property will be transferred to the county. “There is additional interest in the garage facility located behind the former district office, and we are working with another company to complete this process,” Dwiggins said. He anticipates another announcement to come later this winter. MoDOT will continue to develop a regional building located just north of Macon within its existing facilities.
Volunteers Preparing 600 Homemade Pies For Fundraiser The frozen cherry or peach pies will be made from scratch by the church ladies. This is the second year the ministry will provide cherry pies filled with Michigan cherries. Last year, CWOW volunteers prepared 300 cherry pies and sold-out within one week. The nine-inch pies will be sold in hinged containers ready to be baked or frozen. They will also include baking instructions. “We are hoping advance orders will help move
even more pies this year,” said Erica Baker. “We also offer the sixth pie free for folks that purchase five pies. This option was quite popular last year.” The pies will be delivered just prior to Valentine’s Day and prepared on February 10 and 11, 2012. The cost per pie is $8 and free delivery is available to those living in the area. Those purchasing five pies will receive the sixth free, for a total of $40 for six pies. “If frozen, these pies
can impress folks all year. FCS Financial Scholarship To encourage and support higher education for relatives of FCS Financial members, FCS Financial will again offer up to 35 scholarships valued at $1,000 each. The scholarship deadline is March 1 and recipients will be notified in April. More than $250,000 has been distributed through the FCS Financial Scholarship Program since it was established by the FCS Financial Board of Directors in 2004. To qualify, applicants must be a graduating senior at a Missouri high school, a child or grandchild of an FCS Financial member, and attain a 2.5 or higher GPA, an ACT score of at least 26 or rank in the top 20 percent of their senior class. The scholarship applicants are then judged on leadership roles, work experience, community involvement and essays by a non-partisan committee. One recipient is selected from qualified applicants at each FCS Financial branch office. Six at-large recipients are also selected from all qualified applicants. Roberts Participates In Missouri Boys State Grant Colton Roberts participated in the American Legion Boys State of Missouri June 11-18 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Roberts was selected based on his leadership, citizenship, academics, and character during his junior year at La Plata High School. Boys State is a pure democracy in that all citizens may vote and are eligible to hold office. The program is designed to educate and train Missouri’s young leaders in functional citizenship, leadership and government. Nearly 1,000 student leaders build an entire state government in a single week. Roberts’ accomplishments including positions held and awards earned at Missouri Boys State include: Citizen of Ingle City, member of the Nationalist Party, Policeman, Ward III, and Delegate to County Committee, Ward III. Roberts attended Law Enforcement School while participating in Boys State. Roberts is the son of Mary and Julie Roberts and was sponsored by La Plata Lions Club. Sponsors
TOPS #877 Meets TOPS MO#877 La Plata met Tuesday January 17th at 6:00 p.m. in the La Plata Christian Church fellowship hall with 9 members weighing in. Gail led the meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges and the TOPS “Rededication Song” led by Karen C. Roll call was: “What was your weekly goal and did you attain it?” Best TOPS loser was Karen L. and runner-up was Janet. Best KOPS loser was Barbara G. who stayed the same. Janet handed out “The Month After Christmas” poem to each member. We are looking forward to a surprise speaker the 24th. Janet gave the program. Several months ago the question was raised as to what we would want in a weightloss survival kit. Janet brought the actual items the members listed plus lunch boxes to hold them. The following items made up the kits. An eraser to erase lost year and to start over, a journal, pen, bottle of water, piece of gum, fresh veggies and fruit, yogurt, a dark chocolate sugar-free mint, 8” plate, plastic flatware, and a current TOPS and KOPS address sheet with phone members and a compass ring. Each member made her own kit. What a fun program. Our weekly challenge is to track our portions by calories or measurements. Wse closed with the TOPS “Goodnight Song” led by Karen C. The La Plata Boys participated in the North Shelby Tournament last week bringing home the 3rd place trophy on Friday night. On Wednesday they
faced North Shelby who outscored them 70 to 61. Scoring for the Bulldogs were Andrew Perry 8, Taylor Herron 6, Tanner Riggins 20, Peyton Swift 19 and Weston Smith 8.

Toby Pauline Baldwin Johnson Toby Pauline Baldwin Johnson, 76, of Lee’s Summit, Mo, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 2012 surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer. Toby was born on May 13th, 1935, at La Crosse, Mo, to Herman and Mary Baldwin, who preceded her in death. She graduated from La Plata High School in 1953, and was chosen as the first Queen Soya the same year. She married Jack D. Johnson in 1955. She was a member of Spring Valley Baptist Church in Raytown for over 50 years. She was very active in her church and for many years taught the Berean Sunday School class. She received an elementary education degree from CMSU at Warrensburg in 1965. She was retired from Dobbs Elementary School in Hickman Mills where she taught for many years. She was a “snowbird”, and spent the last 12 winters at Sunflower Resort in Surprise, Az. She wrote many short stories and was very active in the creative writing group at the resort. Survivors include: husband, Jack; children, Penny Curtis (her husband, Chuck) and Karen Day, all of Lee’s Summit; sisters, Glenna Johnson of Surprise, AZ and Esta Broderick of Lee’s Summit; granddaughters, Jan Miller (her husband, Steve), Lyndsy Deskins (her husband, Michael), Megan Day and Kyla Curtis; and great granddaughter, Hayley Deskins. At the request of the deceased, no services were held. Fond memories and condolences for the family can be left at Langsford Funeral Home.com. Hoopin’ It Up Basketball Events Now Accepting Entries The Show-Me State Games is now accepting entries for its winter Hoopin’ It Up youth basketball tournaments. The first tournament will be February 24-26 and is open to boys and girls in grades 4-8. The second Hoopin’ It Up will be played March 23-25 and is accepting teams in grades 4-9. These tournaments provide opportunities for teams to improve their skills by playing teams from throughout the state. Phipps Receives Internship
Alan Phipps of La Plata, Missouri, has been selected to participate in Truman State University’s Missouri Government Internship Program during the spring 2012 semester. Phipps will be interning in the office of Senator Timothy P. Green. Truman offers the Missouri Government Internship Program as a unique opportunity for students to intern with a legislator or public official. The program provides the participating student an inside look at state government and the political process. This internship program is one of the oldest and most prestigious full-time internships in Missouri state government. Phipps is a senior exercise science major. At the University, he is active as a member of Beta Beta Beta and College Democrats. Founded in 1867, Truman is Missouri's only highly selective public liberal arts and sciences university.
