Accident At Atlanta Junction A two-vehicle accident occurred on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the north junction of Atlanta on Highway 63.

La Plata. Cottrill ran off the road and struck a utility pole and a stop sign.

Cottrill and her passenger, Braxton Cottrill, age 12 were both taken to Samaritan Hospital in Macon with minor injuries.

All involved were wearing their safety devices.

Hudecz’s vehicle received extensive damage and the Cottrill vehicle was totaled.

Fundraiser-Benefit For Victims Of Fire Students Attend Xtreme A fundraiser-benefit will be held at the Novinger School on January 21st for Daniel and Julie Kay (Hammons) Howe and family who lost their home in a fire Thanksgiving weekend.

Serving of soup, drink, and dessert will begin at 11:30 a.m. for a donation.

There will be an auction of many items, beginning at noon, along with a bake sale.

Youth Conference A group of 18 students and adult chaperones attended the Xtreme Youth Conference (www.xtremeconferences.com) in Branson on December 27-29, 2011. The trip was organized and sponsored

by Church WithOut Walls (WOW) of Atlanta.

Speakers at the conference included the nation’s leading authorities on youth ministries including David Nasser, Tom Richter and Cody Deese.

Today’s top Christian artists including the David Crowder Band, NewSong and Toby Mac also performed.

Funding for the trip was provided by donations to Church WithOut Walls and the annual Fall Smorgasbord. Kyla Wilcox, Aaron Baker and Zach Small served as adult chaperones. The group stayed two nights at the Best Western Music Capital during the conference.

The group packed and ate meals like sandwich wraps, sloppy Joes, and pizzas through the week.

On the trip home, the group had lunch at a Mexican Restaurant in Ozark, MO. The the following students attended the conference: Justine Bane, Tristan Collier, Danielle Welch, Jeremiah Rhoads, Kailin Dunham, Tanner Smith, Lance Couch, Vincent Elrod, Felicity Wilcox, Tagan Brookhart, Jade Whitesel, Katie Ogden, Eran Frasier, Demetri Thomas and Brandon Wilcox.

Eran Frasier made the decision to become a Christian while at the conference!

Church WithOut Walls meets on Sunday mornings at 9:30 A.M. for breakfast followed by small groups and worship.

Wheeler Named To Dean’s List Local students have been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2011 semester at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. To qualify, students must be enrolled full time and achieve a 3.5 or higher grade point average on CMU’s 4.0 grading scale, according to Dr. Rita Gulstad, Vice President and Dean of the University.

The following students are on the Dean’s List: Cole Tipton Wheeler, a Biology major from La Plata; Emylie Lainne Deuel, a Pre-Nursing major from Macon; Sarah Lynn Tucker, a Chemistry major from Macon James Aaron Rowe, a Criminal Justice major from New Cambria;

Tiffany Lea Bowyer, a Business major from Marceline Katie Elizabeth Gladbach, a BSN Generic Program major from Marceline.

Daniel Joseph White, a History major from Marceline Founded in 1854, Central Methodist programs range from undergraduate and graduate studies to high-school dual credit offerings. The Atlanta Hornets played the Brashear Tigers last week with the Lady Tigers just skimping by the Lady Hornets by 1 point with an ending score of 46 to 47.

Scoring for the Lady Hornets were: Samantha Reed 17, Ashton Ross 4, Shalyla Collier 8, Katy Baker 2, Amelia Smothers 8 and Maddie Cuppy 7.

The boys ended in a different verdict with AHS outscoring BHS, 50 to 37. Scoring for the Hornets were: Mick Garnett 9, Dylan Hruska 4, Vincent Elrod 9, Zach Brown 5, Lance Weber 14, Tagan Brookhart 4, Lane Waddle 2 and Dale Magers 3.

North Shelby was a team

to be reckoned with as they overpowerd the Lady Hornets 48 to 20 last week. The Lady Hornets played hard, as always Samantha Reed 9, Ashton Ross 6, Katy Baker 2, Amelia Smothers 1 and Maddie Cuppy 2.

The girls are 0-10 overall and 0-3 in conference.

The boys also played a losing battle to the Raiders and were also outscored 60-48. Scoring for the Hornets were: Mick Garnett 2, Dylan Hruska 15, Vincent Elrod 4, Zach Brown 3, Lance Weber 12, Tagan Brookhart 10 andLane Waddle 2. The boys are 2-8 overall and 1-2 in conference. They will host La Plata Tuesday night.

Four Members of the Gilbreath-McLorn Board of Trustees met at the Home on December 1, 2011 at 3:30 P.M. Ann Bullock, Chair, presided over the meeting.

The November minutes were read and approved.

Treasurer’s report was given. 1000 new brochures for the home arrived and were paid for.

Old business - William Schwartz got in the supplies for the gutters, but did not have the scaffolding. Will have it next week.

Tom Marshall worked on the walk-out porch on the second floor last year. He will come and look with Mr. Schwartz for the leak we have over the stairs.

He thinks it is from the flat roof off the attic by the tur-

ret.

Possible activities for 2012 include working with Alpha Beta Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi on the Easter Egg Hunt to be held at the Home, a possible wine and cheese tasting event over the reunion weekend, establishing a Friends of the McLorn Home who would pay dues, but would receive a discount on events they staged at the Home, and involving the docents more this year. The Home may be rented for showers, weddings, reunions, and meetings. You may contact Nancy Belfield for more information at 3326154.

Atalpal II Holds Meeting

Atalpal II held their December meeting and Christmas Party at the Masonic Lodge on December 8, 2011, with Paula Thompson and Donna Zurcher hostesses. Sixteen members and two guests, Pam Wares and Marilym Cokerham, attended.

Jean Elliott brought a copy of the program of the Ole Time Vaudeville Show, which was performed three nights in February, 1983, to raise money to help keep the Green Theater going. This had been sponsored by Atalpal II. Many local people had participated, from the very young, Jimmy Campbell, Alissa Bragg, Leslie Wood, Jennie Bibee, and the La Plata cheerleaders, to the little older, Maurine Cochran, Trudy Pollock, Faye Farmer, Shirley Matticks, Janice Mitten, Ronnaug Bull, Ed Green, to the older still, Cletus Lackey. Everyone enjoyed the memories these names evoked.

Paula Thompson gave the blessing, and everyone enjoyed the delicious dinner catered by Tyena Bealmer. Instead of the usual 1.00 gift exchange, a white elephant exchange was held. This was the hit of the evening. A short business meeting was held and Lenora Grear, Jerry Prather, and Mary Plumlee were appointed by President Sharron Burns as the nominating committee for the 2012 slate of officers.

The meeting ended with a Sing-A-Long of Christmas songs by everyone.

Review of 1099’s James W. Bane James William Bane, age 87, of Macon, Missouri passed away Tuesday morning (January 3, 2012) at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, Missouri.

James was born on October 7, 1924 near Gifford in Macon County, a son of Clayton A. and Edna (Lockett) Bane. James was never married.

Survivors include a brother, Curtis A. Bane of Rock Island, Illinois; nieces, Dianna Bealmer and Janie Carter, both of Macon, Missouri, Judy Harvey of Atlanta, Missouri and Donna Hendricksen of Joy, Illinois; and a nephew, David Bane of Rock Island, Illinois; other relatives and many friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kermit Bane, a

sister, Vanita Jeffery and a nephew, Clayton Bane.

He had lived all of his life in Macon County and was a graduate of Atlanta High School Class of 1945.

He worked as a welder for Associated Mining from 1968 to 1989 and he also farmed. James enjoyed flying, inventing and building and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

At his request, graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday (January 6, 2012) at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, east of Atlanta with Brother Barry Richardson officiating. Casket bearers were members of his family. James requested there be no visitation.

Services were under the direction of Elliott Funeral Home in Atlanta, Missouri.

Juanita L. McCarty Juanita L. McCarty, age 94 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 at the La Plata Nursing Home.

Born June 18, 1917 in Novelty, Missouri, she was the daughter of Elmer W. and Ethel L. (Robb) McConnell. On December 23, 1935 in Brashear, Missouri, she married Roy L. McCarty who preceded her in death on November 15, 1996.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, one daughter, Dea Ann McCarty and one sister, Bernice Frazee.

Surviving is one daughter and son-in-law, Doneta and Richard Harden of La Plata, Missouri; six grandchildren, Rich Harden,

Whitney Agency, Inc.

Denny Harden, Traci Redmon, Monti Ross, Shane Ross, and Jodi Bingham; fifteen great grandchildren, eleven great-great grandchildren, and one niece, Beth Primm of Novelty, Missouri.

Juanita moved to La Plata from Knox County in 1948. She was a member of the La Plata Christian Church. She loved quilting, gardening and spending time with her family.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri. Burial was in the Locust Hill Cemetery, near Novelty, Missouri.

Arrangements were under the direction of Travis Funeral Chapel, La Plata.

I know we’ve discussed 1099 forms before but several changes and clarifications have occurred of late so a review is very important right now. That’s what we’ll do today.

1099’s or information returns have been around for several years. They are used to report non-employee work that amounts to over $600 during your tax year. They are used to report such things as custom work, cash rent, interest and other business expenses that are considered non-employee compensation so to speak. Remember that non-employees are those that bring their own equipment or tools and you pay on a per job {so much an acre, so much per bale, etc.} basis. Corporations are still exempt (you don’t have to report payments to them) for this year although that has been discussed by the IRS to change that at some point. The 1099’s need to be sent to the person you paid the $600 or more to by the end of January and to the IRS by the 1st of March. Sending them late will now result in double the penalties that were in place before or $30 per form if sent after March 1, $60 per return after Au-

gust 1 and $100 per return if not done by the end of October.

A couple of critical issues related to 1099’s. (1) This (1099’s) are not used for employees and paying someone more than $250 and less {or even more} than $600 that is an employee and sending them a 1099 won’t help you if the IRS catches it. (2) The IRS has stated that $600 or more paid to an attorney should be reported on a 1099 MISC too and (3) if you’re in doubt whether to send a 1099 or not be safe and send it.

Marilyn J. Barnhill Marilyn Joyce Barnhill, age 75, of La Plata, Missouri passed away Tuesday (January 3, 2012) at the La Plata Nursing Home.

The daughter of Owen Newman and Dorothy (Lee) Houston, she was born December 16, 1936 in Greentop, Missouri.

She grew up in the Greentop area and attended the Hazel Creek School. For several years she worked at nursing homes in Kirksville. On June 10, 1978 in Kirksville she was united in marriage to Donald Barnhill. She and Donald lived in Cedar Rapids, Iows and later returned to Kirksville.

She was a member of the Lighthouse Assemby of

Bill Jackson Well known Atlanta farmer, Bill Jackson, age 72 passed away Monday morning (January 9, 2012) at his home.

Troop B Seeking Students To Participate In Student Alliance Program Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, is pleased to announce Troop B will be conducting a two-day Student Alliance Program. The purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for current junior and senior high school students to learn more about law enforcement and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The 2012 Troop B Student Alliance Program will be conducted at the Troop B Headquarters in Macon, Missouri, on two consecutive Saturdays from 9:30

a.m. to 4:00 p.m., beginning on March 17, 2012.

Participants must provide their own transportation and will be on their own for a lunch break each day. During the program, students will participate in a variety of educational activities intended to familiarize them with Highway Patrol operations and equipment. Some of the activities will include: Patrol history, firearms, traffic safety, polygraph demonstration, stop and approach, and crime scene investigation.

Troop B is seeking in-

terested junior and senior high school students of good character to apply to participate in the program.

In order to provide a quality educational experience, the program will be limited to 20 students. Applications can be obtained at the Troop B Headquarters, located at 308 Pine Crest Drive, Macon, Missouri; or by calling Sergeant Brent Bernhardt at (660) 385-2132.

Applications must be received by February 17, 2012, to be eligible to participate.

Male Mountain Lion Trapped & Released In Reynolds County The 122-pound cougar turned up in a live-trap on national-forest land The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has examined and released a male mountain lion trapped by a private citizen in Reynolds County.

Reynolds County Commissioner Wayne Henson called Conservation Agent Eric Long this morning and reported catching the 122-pound mountain lion on Wednesday. Henson said the cat entered a large, cage-type live trap that he set on Mark Twain National Forest land to catch bobcats, coyotes, raccoons and other mammals.

Henson brought the mountain lion, still alive and in the cage trap, to Centerville this morning.

Agent Long and MDC Resource Scientist Jeff Beringer took possession of the animal and transported it to Current River Conservation Area, where Beringer could examine the animal without disturbance. After weighing and measuring the cat and collecting DNA, Beringer released it to the wild, in keeping with MDC’s established policy for such cases.

Beringer estimated the cat’s age at 2 years. He said it was in excellent physical condition and showed no signs of having been held in captivity.

All wildlife is protected under the provisions of the Wildlife Code of Mis-

souri. However, the Code provides for the taking of wildlife during prescribed hunting and trapping seasons and under other circumstances, such as when mountain lions are attacking or killing livestock or domestic animals or threatening human safety. MDC has not stocked mountain lions in Missouri and has no plans to do so.

MDC wants to learn more about mountain lions in the Show-Me State and encourages Missourians to report sightings to the Mountain Lion Response Team at mountain. lion@mdc.mo.gov.

The Macon County OATS Volunteer Support Committee met Monday, December 19, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the fellowship center of the Macon United Methodist Church.

The meeting was called to order by chairperson Mary Clark, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call was taken by secretary Kathy Vivian, who then read the minutes of the November 21st meeting. There were no addition or corrections to the minutes. The absence of treasurer Norma Benson, Mary Clark gave the financial report. There were twelve volunteers and guests present as well as Steven Russon, OATS driver. There were no trip reports. The trip to see Christmas lights was canceled because of the inability to coordinate the availability of the OATS bus with dates available for the trip. There are no trips pending. Anyone who has a suggestion for a trip is asked to contact Norma Benson, trip coordinator, at 660-385-7734.

All OATS contract trips are open to the public, all OATS buses are handicapped accessible.

Old Business - Kathy mentioned that the response to the new OATS route available to anyone in Macon County to the city of Macon has been

very limited. The route is available the third Tuesday of each month for shopping, doctors’ appointment’s, etc. Up to three stops are permitted. Kathy suggested that the volunteers start using this route and also mention to others the advisability of using the OATS bus when the weather gets colder. It is much more convenient to be dropped off at a store entrance than to walk across a parking lot on a cold, windy day.

The OATS driver will also carry packages to the door.

Anyone wanting information about this route or wishing to make a reservation may call the OATS Shelbina office (800-6546287) Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kathy asked Steven Russon why there were no flyers announcing this route on the Macon County OATS buses.

Russon said that he would look into putting flyers on the buses.

Kathy stated that anyone needing to use the OATS bus for a doctor’s appointment should make a reservation as soon as possible, because available time slots fill up rapidly. She also stated that the Shelby County/Macon bus to Columbia which normally runs on the first Monday of the month, which will be January 2nd will be go-

ing on Monday, January 9th, because of the New Year’s Day holiday.

Mary Clark reported on the visit to the Macon County Commissioner’s office following the November 19th meeting. The volunteers met with commissioners Drew Belt and Jon Dwiggans to thank them for their continued support of OATS in Macon County, which is very appreciated by OATS. New Business - Mary read a thank you from the OATS Inc. Corporate office stating how much OATS appreciated everything the OATS volunteers do, and wishing them a great holiday season.

Mary announced that the next meeting will be January 16th at 10:00 a.m. in the Macon Methodist Church, but will be held in the Cornerstone Conference room (Prairie Street entrance). The Fellowship Center will be unavailable during the Martin Luther King Breakfast.

Refreshments were served after the meeting.

Volunteers are asked to bring Food Pantry donations and Best Choice labels to the January meeting. All OATS meetings are open to the public.

01-01-12, deputies investigated a reported burglary at a residence on Valley St. in Ethel, Mo. The victim said the home is not occupied at this time and could not be sure of the date of the incident.

Entry was made by breaking a window in the rear of the house. The victim reported some jewelry missing and copper pipe stolen from the home.

01-01-12, deputies investigated a reported animal theft form a property in the 14000 bk of Iguana St. near Laplata. The animal was described as a female miniature donkey approximately 75 lb. It was reportedly missing from a

barn on the property.

01-05-12, deputies investigated the reported theft of 10 or 12 junk cars from property located in the 10000 bk. of Arizona St. It is believed the vehicles were stolen to be sold for scrap. The investigation is ongoing with arrest pending.

01-03-12, the father of a 13 year old juvenile came to the Sheriffs and reported his daughter as a run a way. A search was conducted for the child and after several hours she was located at a residence in Macon, and taken into custody. She was transported to the Juvenile office and they took charge

of the case from that point.

01-03-12, deputies arrested 24 year old McKenzie L. Weber, of Macon, for possession of drug paraphernalia. She was processed and transported to Randolph Co. Jail pending filing of formal charges.

01-05-12, deputies transport 25 year old Dustin E. Burton from the Moberly Correctional Center to the Macon County Jail where he was arrested on two Macon county warrants for receiving stolen property and the stealing over $500.00. His bond was set at $9,900.00. He appeared in Macon County Circuit Court and was later returned to prison.

We take our breathing for granted. It’s when we get the Flu that we become aware of how hard it is to “get our breath.” We suffer from a raspy throat; we feel achy. Every breath causes us pain. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for our suffering.And we wonder why it is that the mean and ornery people never seem to come down with the Flu or catch a cold? And why is it that the righteous people seem to catch every bad bug that comes along?

The Scriptures provide us with some clues, some answers to these ques-

tions.

Sickness and suffering come to every person eventually. No one is immune. Even Jesus had to contend with sickness and disease. Jesus was human like us. Unlike many of us, Jesus did not deny that he was ill. He did not use illness or suffering to call attention to himself. Jesus did not feel that his suffering was God’s way of punishing him for some sin.

Jesus admitted his human weakness. He used those moments of human suffering to draw nearer to his God. Suffering can lead us to a deeper dependence on God. Illness allows us the time for meditation and prayer, time to consider what is truly important in our lives. Sickness and suffering can be doorways to a greater faith in God.

That increased faith can lead us to gain spiritual victories.

SO, if the Flu Bug gets you down, don’t give up!

See your doctor. Get plenty of rest. Drink lots of juice.

And let those flu bugs give rise to a deepening of your faith in God!

Memories of January 8, 1937

by Red Roberts Seventy-five years ago on January 8, I was a boy of 13 headed to school at the Hays School just north of Gifford, Missouri. It was a cold morning with the ground being frozen and very little snow. I made it to school as usual, but as we worked our way through the school day, we noticed it started to sleet about noon. This gradually increased, sleeting harder and harder until they finally let school out early around 3:00 p.m.

I started out for home and walked half a mile face first into the sleet. About the time I got to the Easley Corner, the sleet had stopped and it was snowing “hominy” snow. That

is a hard pellet of snow about the size of a piece of hominy. I decided to go into the Easley house and warm my face and hands.

With about a mile left to go, I soon started out again in the hominy snow.

Right before I got home, the snow changed into a heavy wet snow that came straight down. It continued to snow until after dark. When it finally stopped snowing we had one and a half inches of sleet, followed by three inches of hominy snow, and that was topped by six inches of heavy wet snow.

But it didn’t stop there!

Later that night I stood on the front porch with my dad and we watched it rain. It rained about three

He said when it was sleeting, the temperature was 29 degrees; when it was hominy snowing, it was 31 degrees; when it was the heavy wet snow, it was 34 degrees; and when it was raining, it was 36 degrees.

When the wind hit thirty minutes later, the temperature dropped to 22 degrees.

The next morning we woke up to the temperature of twelve degrees below zero with six to eight inches of ice. Through the night, the rain, sleet and snow had turned to ice. That ice lasted six long weeks.

Weston Smith scored the winning point against in the last few seconds of the game to give the Bulldogs the win.

FLPP Holds Meeting The Friends for La Plata Preservation met January 2, 2012 at 5 p.m. in the La Plata Library. President, Gary Smith, called the meeting to order. Previous minutes were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given.

Jack Crawford gave a report on work at the Green Theatre. He had installed a drain tube to divert water from the downspout. It was appearing to be much drier now.

A motion to pay the insurance company in a lump sum for coverage from September to next October was approved.

New names to add to the checking account were: Sharron Burns, Gary

Smith, Arlene Bunch and Cindy Moore. They are to see Heather Wheeler at La Plata Bank.

A motion to have the Winter Flea Market on January 28, 2012 was approved. The event will be at Christy’s Auction and the American Legion Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will also include a Soup Luncheon as well as the Auction. Tables are available for rent. For spaces call Arlene at 3327856, 332-7036 or 3324945.

The meeting adjourned a 5:45 p.m. Present were Jack Crawford, Gary Smith, Cindy Moore, Sharron Burns, Arlene Bunch and Evelyn Falls.

United Methodist Women The Atlanta United Methodist Women met January 4 for a light meal and meeting. It was reported that we had paid our pledges to mission for 2011 plus other mission giving to be a 5-Star Unit. Program books were worked on for 2012.

follow. We were reminded of movie night at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11th, with a family friendly sports movie. There will be free popcorn and drink.

Adventure Club, our after school program for Kindergarten through 6th grade, starts back on January 10. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. and Church at 11:00 a.m. every Sunday.

Bald Eagle Release Fulfills Dream For Hospice Patient WHAT: The University of Missouri Raptor Rehabilitation Project will release a mature bald eagle named “Watson” back into the wild at 1 p.m., Jan. 8, following a month of medical rehabilitation.

WHO: Members of the University of Missouri Raptor Rehabilitation Project, Hospice Compassus’ Dream Team, Maconarea resident Ruth Payton and her family, and Missouri State Parks staff.

WHERE: Long Branch Marina Store and swimming beach parking lot within Long Branch State Park in Macon, Mo. WHEN: 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012.

WHY: RuthPayton is an 82-year-old hospice patient with terminal hemolytic anemia. She loves birds and recently acquired two cockatiels that she enjoys watching and listening to throughout the day. When her Hospice Compassus nurse learned that Mrs. Payton’s long-held dream is to see an American bald eagle “in real life,” she passed the information onto her hospice social worker, Randi Petre. Mrs. Petre contacted the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine to inquire if the College’s Raptor Rehabilitation Project could assist the hospice Dream Team in making Mrs. Payton’s wish a reality.

As fate would have it, Raptor Rehabilitation Project members have been treating a mature bald eagle they named Watson. Watson was brought to the MU Veterinary Medical Teaching

Hospital Dec. 5, 2011, by a Missouri Conservation agent. Watson was unable to stand and showed many signs of a neurologic problem consistent with lead poisoning. Lead toxicity is a common problem in bald eagles. It is typically caused by an accumulation of lead during the lifetime of the bird from eating contaminated fish and other prey. An initial blood test for lead showed levels too high to register a result. X-rays also revealed some abnormal material in his digestive tract. Watson was anesthetized and the material, which looked like rotten liver, was removed. He was given fluids and antibiotics and started on a treatment that removes lead from a bird’s body. The initial lead treatment lasted for one week, at which time he showed great improvement. However, a blood test showed that the amount of lead in his blood (0.39 parts per million) was still too high (normal is less than 0.1 parts per million), so the treatment was repeated. When Watson’s blood lead level reached normal, he was moved from the hospital to a flight cage on Dec. 27, where he has been regaining strength and flight muscle.

Watson is now ready to be returned to the wild and will be released at Long Branch State Park at Macon, which will provide the opportunity for Mrs. Payton to not only see a bald eagle in person, but also to witness its release, while providing Watson an ideal habitat for his continued good health.

Also joining the music group recently were Jimmy and Carla Campbell of Wichita, Kansas. Jimmy has a band of his own that recently recorded a new album and they will be playing and singing at the Sally Mountain Jamboree on the 4th of July weekend. Also at the Nursing Home were Glen and Sherry Pippin, Kenny Shaffer, Carol Carlson, Charles Allen, Linda Mansfield and Mariellen Campbell.

Marteena Gunnels celebrated her 91st birthday at La Plata Nursing Home on Wednesday. Gene and Donna McClanahan visited and several other friends.

W.R. and Barbara Buck, Nancy and Eva and Verna Buck enjoyed dining at the Red Rooster on Sunday evening.

Oklahoma Gaughan Indians 4-H Family Club Meet Christmas The Oklahoma Indians 4-H club met at 5:30 at the Baptist Family Life Center on December 13, 2011.

The meeting was called to order by President Skylar Rhoads. The pledges were led by the Club Officers. Roll call was given

by MaKenzie Beautte, 12 members answered. The minutes were read by MaKenzie Beautte. The treasures report was given

by Tanner Smith. The committee reports were given

by LeAnna Lewis. MaKenzie Beautte, Molly West, and Skylar Rhoads turned in their 4-H stories for the Ambassador contest. The Ambassadors Contest will be held January 7th at 1:00 p.m. Our club sang at the La Plata Nursing Home on December 16th. Our club collected money at C&R Market in La Plata for the Salvation Army, we collected $120.67. Thank you for all the donations! We sent out Christmas cards to local service men that are over seas. Recognition night will be held on January 21. This month our club celebrated its 60th birthday. We had cake and ice cream. Birthdays this month are Jill, Kirk, and Eva. Our next meeting will be held January 10, 2012 at 5:00. Members present were: Cordell, MaKenzie, Justin, Kirk, Sarah, Mattew, Laryn, Skylar, Tanner, Trista, Maddison, and Molly. After a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone had returned to their home by Monday noon.

The weather has been unbelievable for January. There is no snow and the cold temperatures are bearable. We could actually use some moisture.
