Conservation Sets 2012 Turkey & Deer Regulations
2011 Friend - Local farmer Angela Schultz has been named the 2011 “Friend of Church WithOut Walls.” Schultz received the award following worship services on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the house church in Atlanta. Schultz sponsored both of the ministry’s mission teams to Joplin this summer and has been a supporter of CWOW since its inception. “We are fortunate to have Angela in our community,” said Aaron Baker, President. “She is one of those people that is constantly putting others before self. As soon as she heard we were taking a group to Joplin, she asked us how she could help.” Schultz moved to the area to run a hog farm on Highway 3 west of Atlanta. Retirement - Ray Ivy, City of La Plata Administrator served his last day on December 30, 2011. A retirement reception was held in his honor on Friday, December 30th at the Council Chambers.
The family of Scott and Cindy Teter of Atlanta lost their home in a fire on Tuesday night, December 27, 2011. The structure is believed to be a total loss. The Church WithOut Walls is sponsoring an “eventless event” to get assistance to the family as quickly as possible. According to Aaron Baker they are organizing a “Money Bomb” to raise money for the family. “We would like to raise $1,000 in seven days,” said Baker. Vehicle Accident
On January 1, 2012 at approximately 1:40 a.m. a two-vehicle accident occurred 2 miles Southwest of Atlanta on Jupiter Avenue. A northbound 1999 Ford, driven by Brady Bogeart, age 18 of Atlanta struck head on with a southbound 1995 Chevrolet driven by Leon Shears, age 37 of Macon when they meet at a hill crest. Both vehicles came to rest on the roadway. Bogearts vehicle was totaled and the Shears vehicle received extensive damage. A passenger in the Shears vehicle, Brenda Shears, age 40 and Bogeart, both received moderate injuries, while Leon Shears received minor injuries. Bogeart was transported by Macon County Ambulance to Macon Airport then flown by Staff For Life to Moberly Regional Hospital in Moberly. Brenda and Leon Shears were both transported to Samaritan Hospital in Macon, Missouri.

Conservation Commission Set 2012 Deer & Turkey Regulations Hunters can start planning for next year’s turkey and deer seasons, thanks to recent actions by the Missouri Conservation Commission. At its Dec. 15 meeting in Jefferson City, the Commission approved 2012 turkey-hunting regulations similar to 2011. The regular spring turkey season will run from April 16 through May 6. The fall firearms turkey season will run from Oct. 1 through 31. The 2012 youth spring

Love Lake Home Circle
Love Lake Home Circle met December 15th at Santa Fe Espresso restaurant for our Christmas meeting. Eight members answered roll call “Christmas Plans.” Each were anticipating the arrival of family members, going to see family and the enjoyment of Christmas cards and notes updating them on family and friends. Club members donated $50 to the La Plata Ministerial Alliance and each brought non-perishable foods for the La Plata Christian Ministry Food Pantry. Officers elected for 2012 were as follows: President Nancy Belfield, Vice President - Becky Mohan, Second Vice President - Linda Moots, Secretary - Donna Smithson, and Treasurer - Jackie Eitel. Plans were made for the January birthday party at the La Plata Nursing Home. Due to family commitments, Evelyn Himes announced she will no longer be a member. Evelyn will be missed. There will be no meeting in Januray. The February meeting will be at the home of Enid Moots.

Obituary Clifford E. Johnson
Clifford E. Johnson, age 63, of LaPlata, Missouri died Sunday, (December 25, 2011) in La Plata, Missouri. He was born on January 24, 1948 in Mt. Vernon, Missouri, the son of William and Velma (Sumpter) Johnson. On April 20, 1968, in Kirksville, he was married to Sue Jones who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mike Johnson and special friend, Donna Bass of LaPlata, Missouri and Mark Johnson and wife Lisa of Kirksville, Missouri; one sister, Patty White of Kirksville, Missouri; step-brother, Kenny Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri; two half-brothers, Callie and Kevin Johnson of Illinois; seven grandchildren, Cory, Derek, and Emily Johnson, Alisha Robinson and husband Michael, Shelby Johnson, and Zeke and Ethan Frueh; four greatgrandchildren, Sydney and Tyler Robinson and Averie and Zoe Johnson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Marie Matheny, and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Junior and Lydia Jones. Clifford received his education in Brashear schools, graduating from high school in 1966. He entered the United States Army in February 1968
serving until January 1970. He was a radio operator in Germany. After his military service, he worked at Donaldson’s Incorporated in Kirksville until an injury forced his retirement. Clifford continued to be active in the community cooking and helping whenever called upon. He coached and enjoyed watching his boys play baseball. He loved to play pitch and he and Charlie McClanahan were hard to beat. He was an avid reader of western books. He was a life member of the VFW abroad and a member of Sugar Creek Community Church. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2011 at Davis-Playle-HudsonRimer Funeral Home with Virgil K. Jones officiating. Musical selections will be “Daddy’s Hands”, “Old Rugged Cross”, and “Peace In The Valley” sung by The Sweetwater Family Gospel Group. Burial will follow at Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Jacksonville. Pallbearers will be Cory Johnson, Derek Johnson, Rick Johnson, Danny Johnson, Dennis McClanahan, and Michael Robinson. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Davis-Playle-HudsonRimer Funeral Home, 2100 E. Shepherd Avenue, (Highway 6 East), Kirksville, Missouri.
Postage Goes Up January 22nd Beginning this month, it will cost just a penny more to mail letters to any location in the United States, the first price change for First-Class Mail stamps (Forever stamps) in more than two and a half years. The new 45-cent price for Forever stamps is among price changes filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission today. Highlights of the new single-piece First-Class Mail pricing, effective Jan. 22, 2012, include: •Letters (1 oz.) – 1-cent increase to 45 cents. •Letters additional ounces – unchanged at 20 cents . •Postcards – 3-cent in-

End Of Another Year For all practical purposes 2011 is over and 2012 upon us. I now know what my parents and others talked about when they said time goes faster as you get older. There is some end of the year issues that you should address now. Finishing up your 2011 farm records is probably the 1st thing to put on that list. Not only can it help you with a tax estimate before the end of the year (yes it may be too late at this point) but it also gets you prepared for doing your 2011 income taxes. Remember that the Macon County Extension Center has Farmer’s Tax Guides to assist you with tax questions available at no cost. Don’t forget when you’re finishing your records up to keep track of those individuals that you need to send 1099 forms to as well (paid over $600 to that aren’t employees) since late fees from the IRS have doubled. Another important end of the year issue is going over your farm leases. Landlords feel like they deserve more money since many rents (crop ground especially) are going up but you need to know what that farm yields and what will make both of you a profit. If you
don’t have a written lease now is a good time to start. Written leases leave less chances for conflicts and disagreements later on and they’re good business practice. You can get lease forms on a new web site www.aglease101.org. Pasture leases as well as crop ones are available to download on this site. It’s also not too early to start planning your 2012 cash flow or farm plan either. There are many tools available through University of Missouri Extension to assist you with that, including average budgets and prices. You can find those at http://www.fapri. missouri.edu/ and click on farmer’s corner to find crop budgets. Livestock budgets for 2012 are at http://agebb.missouri.edu/ mgt/budget/index.htm and are made for north and south Missouri. . Keep in mind tree seedling order forms are available at the Macon County Extension Center but if you don’t order soon you may not get some varieties. 12-15-11, a deputy responded to a residence on Heron St. to a complaint of livestack being out and causing property damage. After an investigation it was determined there had been several occurrences over a number of months of the livestock being out and the problem not being corrected. Therefore 52 year old Donald W. McElhaney, owner of the live-
stock, was cited for animal neglect. 12-14-11, Jason A. Brower, 34 of Macon, turned himself into the Sheriffs Office and was arrested on a Macon Co. arrest warrant, charging him with felony stealing. He posted a $9,000.00 bond and was released pending his Circuit Court appearance.

Minutes Macon County Commission – December 5, 2011 Members Present: Alan R. Wyatt, Drew Belt and Jon Dwiggins. Chris Waddle, road supervisor, was in to discuss work orders for the county. Ed Knowles was in concerning County casualty and liability insurance. The Commission received the end of the month Jail report from Macon County Sheriff Robert Dawson. The Commission received the orders to proceed with work on Helium Road extension project and on the Bayport bridge project from MoDOT. The Commission voted to retain services of SKW for engineering work for the Helium Road Project. Motion was made Commissioner Dwiggins, seconded by Commissioner Belt, Vote 3-0. Minutes Macon County Commission – December 8, 2011 Members Present: Alan R. Wyatt, Drew Belt and Jon Dwiggins. Chris Waddle, road supervisor, was in to discuss work orders for the county. Mac Scott was in regarding the County fence law. Ed Knowles with Macon Insurance was in concerning County Casualty Insurance. Robert Douglas was in regarding a bridge on Artic Road needing a new floor. Work order was issued. The Commission appointed Kami Mohn, 2
year term, Darla Dwiggins, 1 year term, Bobbi Lucas, 1 year term, and Rusty Neill, 2 year term, to the Community Child Development Center Board. Commissioner Dwiggins abstained from voting, motion made by Commissioner Belt, seconded by Commissioner Wyatt, Vote 2-0. The Commission met with MoDOT official’s Kevin James and Brian Haffner, along with Economic Development Director Denise Bennett regarding the MoDot District Building. JR Pagalai was in concerning a culvert on Kayak Street. The Commission spoke via phone with Kenny Morris in regards to the Helium Road project. Mr. Morris gave the county permission to survey on his property. David Ausmus with SKW was instructed to begin boundary and construction surveying on the Helium Road project. The Commission met with Gary Strack regarding the upcoming Bayport Bridge Project. Russell Placzek with Oden Enterprises met the Commission regarding steel and culvert needs for the County.

McHenry, Ashley Johnson, Mark Collins, Keven Oliver, Andrea Hogsett, Jan Barry, and Max Glover. David Ausmus with SKW was in concerning the Helium Road project. The Commission approved the amended 2011 budget for the Assessment fund. Motion was made by Commissioner Belt, seconded by Commissioner Dwiggins, Vote 3-0. The Commission voted to request qualifications from area engineering firms for engineering services on the Bayport Bridge project. Motion was made by Presiding Commissioner Wyatt, seconded by Commissioner Dwiggins, Vote 3-0.

TOPS Meets
TOPS MO#877 La Plata met Tuesday, December 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the La Plata Christian Church fellowship hall with 7 members weighing in. Gail led the meeting. We opened with our TOPS and KOPS pledges and the “TOPS/KOPS Wonderland” song, led by Karen C. Roll call was “give a memory of Leona”. TOPS best loser was Barb Y. with Karen C. as runner up. Best KOPS loser was Barbara G. Ginger was “TOPSi” for the month of December. Our good and faithful friend and coleader, Leona Ogan passed away December 21st and her funeral was December 26th. Several of our TOPS members attended. At our December 27th meeting in honor of Leona, we held our own short memorial service, featuring her empty chair, a single red rose, which was a symbol of our love and memories, with all members repeating the twenty-third Psalm led by Karen C. Among many things to remember about Leona was her love of God, her love of this country, her love of life, her enthusiasm and doing for others. Karen C. handed out a list of food items under 100 calories as snacking suggestions. Ginger accepted the position of coleader until our next election. Our weekly challenge is to start the new year with a no-gain meeting. We closed with our “TOPS Goodnight Song” led by Karen C.

Shawn Burris of Moberly was a caller in the Burris home on Friday, December 23. Dean and Pam Burris and Roger, Betty and Matt Tipton of Macon spent Christmas eve and Christmas Day with Mike, Melanie, Mady and Maddox Tipton of Trenton. All attended services Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at Hatton Chapel and Gilman City Methodist churches where Mike Tipton is pastor. Dean and Pam Burris hosted a Christmas dinner and gathering on Monday, December 26 at their home. Shawn and Jennipher Burris of Moberly; Asher and Zach Kimbrough of Moberly; and Mike, Melanie, Mady and Maddox Tipton of Trenton was in attendance. We enjoyed a nice meal together and opening presents, especially Mady and Maddox. Mady remarks was this is what I always wanted or I have been waiting 14 years for and she is only 5. Maddox doesn’t say alot but he was ready to climb in the box to ride his caterpillar bulldozer ride toy. Pam Burris visited with Donald and Janet St. Clair on Dec. 27 in Brookfield and ran into a friend and her husband there too, Buck and Bonnie Carter. Bob Aldinger and Dean Burris received word on December 28 that their sister, Joyce Burris of Winslow, AK had died. There will be no services at this time but some time in the summer there will be a service at Bunce Cemetery. Dean and Pam Burris and Roger, Betty and Matt Tipton of Macon spent New Year Eve and New Year Day with Mike, Melanie, Mady and Maddox Tipton of Macon. Everyone attended services at Hatton Chapel and Betty and Pam joined Mike, Melanie and Maddox at Gilman City. Billy Pippin will be filling the pulpit at Elmer Baptist Church on January 8 at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Happy New Year to all who read this column.

Nativity Scene Thefts Saturday, December 17, 2011 the Macon County Sheriff ’s Office received numerous reports of the theft of at least five baby Jesus’ from a variety of Nativity scenes and other Christmas decorations from several churches and homes in Bevier and at least one in Macon, that had occurred during the overnight hours. On Tuesday, December 20, 2011 deputies of the Macon County Sheriff ’s Office and the Bevier City
Marshal concluded the investigation with the arrest of 18-year old Brandon Gaw of Macon, and 17-year old Hilary Voss of Bevier, along with a juvenile suspect for 6 counts of Theft/Stealing under $500 - RsMO 570.030 which is a Class A Misdemeanor. All of the decorations and infant Jesus’ were recovered and returned to the owners, with Jesus only being away from the manger for a short time.

City Approves New Patrol Car was the big headline of this weeks paper with the city council meeting on March 14, 2011. The city purchased a 2007 Chevy Impala with a grant that covered 90%. The Easter Egg Hunt was scheduled for April 16th. A fund-raiser for MS was held at Smitty’s Tavern. The trivia contest was hosted by Tammi’s Trotters. Winners pictured were “The Fuzz”, Adam Kinney, Kristen Kinney, Katie Parrish, Alicia Hudson and Wes Buck. Sheldon Eitel retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service. Last day of school for La Plata was June 3rd. The La Plata American Legion Auxiliary hosted a ham and bean dinner as a fund raiser for monies to replace flags at the cemetery. A basketball camp was held for those in 4th grade through 12th grade at the high school in La Plata, coached by John Weaver and Kyle Fleshman. Coach David Fouch of La Plata was pictured with Jeana Bane, Hayden Fouch, Taylor Wheeler, Birdie Buck and Christian Bunch, who were recently selected as McDonalds Nemo Basketball AllStars. Atlanta’s Church WithOut Walls sent relief help to Joplin after the vicious tornado’s went through their town. Hunter Cuppy and Justin Grigsby of Elmer, were named to compete in the World’s Largest Junior High Rodeo. Kathy Martie was pictured with La Plata Postmaster, Ruth Larrick, receiving a 30 year US Postal Service award. Aubree Jolea Newland was born to Candace Hettinger and Trevor Newland on May 25th. Kennady Grace Robinson was born to Brooke and Zack Robinson on May 31st. Maverick Ray Bergfield was born to Tera and Jamie Bergfield on May 7th. Roger and Linda Crawford celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The obituary of Mary Jane “Janie” Bowen was printed in this issue. The death notice of Margaret Lee Bullock Shoemake was printed in this issue. 4-H Acheivement Day was held on June 4th at the First Christian Church in Macon. The Atlanta Homecoming schedule was printed in this issue. June 29, 2011 Gary Belfield of La Plata was saluted as “some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet”. Lexi Dysart was voted as Homecoming Queen at the Atlanta Homecoming. She was pictured with her court, Lana Allen, Ameila Smother and Teanna King. La Plata Nursing Home announced their annual 4th of July celebration was to be held with a barbecue and homemade ice cream, along with fireworks. Vacation Bible School for First Baptist Church in La Plata was to begin on July 11th. The Progressive Farmerettes were pictured having a meeting at the Red Rooster in La Plata. Those at the meeting were Paula Thompson, Alma Baker, Elaine Holmes, Mildred Bragg and Iris Chaney. Ray Ivy submitted his resignation to the City of La Plata.
