USDA Farm Service Agency Announces Key Dates for New 2014 Farm Bill Safety Net Programs The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing key dates for farm owners and producers to keep in mind regarding the new 2014 Farm Bill established programs, Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC).

The new programs, designed to help producers better manage risk, usher in one of the most significant reforms to U.S. farm programs in decades.

“The ARC and PLC programs are a significant reform in the farm safety net,”

said Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Val Dolcini. “FSA wants to keep producers well informed on all steps in the process. We will continue our outreach efforts and maintain resources online to help them understand the new programs before they come in to make decisions for their operations.”

Dates associated with ARC and PLC that farm owners and producers need to know: Farmers can Update Yield History and/or Reallocate Base Acres through Feb. 27,

2015; Producers Select the Safety Net Program Best for Their Operation Beginning Nov. 17, 2014 through March 31, 2015 Sept. 29, 2014 to Feb. 27, 2015: Land owners may visit their local Farm Service Agency office to update yield history and/or reallocate base acres.

ELECTION VETTING

Well, the mid-term election is over. Remembering that the term, mid-term basically refers only to the President, maybe mid-life crisis is at least as fitting an analogy.

Given our current president’s “sour grapes” reaction, it would seem that the stress cracks are near crisis proportion. Threatening to withdraw to his “happy place” and issue executive orders until he turns blue will certainly not cast an aura of unified progress upon Democrats’ (including Hillary) trying to muster voter support for the (“real?”) election in 2016.

For the time being, he is just another voter who has chosen to live in a country that is proud that free elections are what distinguishes us from countries where government is administered by edict and oppression.

But, what good is the right to vote if you don’t?

This last Ralls Count election posted some very impressive participation stats. Of the 7036 registered voters in Ralls County, 3260 (46.33%) claimed and exercised their right.

Looking deeper into precinct totals, we find that Perry broke over the 500 mark with a 51.52% participation. Liberty (47.77%) and Center (45.70%) were followed by Saverton at 44.69%. Saverton seemed to voice a dissatisfaction with choices offered. With 77 write-ins (19 against one unopposed candidate) Saverton accrued for over half of the (153) write-ins in the other seven precincts combined. Interestingly, Saverton had no indecision in either the Presiding Commissioner or County Clerk balloting, there were no write-ins, though not a sweep for either party. It’s good to see free thinkers stepping out of the Pavlov lab into natural light.

While much of the outcome of the county election could be attributed to demographics (long-term

family/political heritage vs voters who weigh issues against tradition), two factors of interest are the impressive voter participation, and the “cost per vote.”

Investment-per-vote vs potential term salary earnings will be two aspects of the county election I will explore as soon as financial reports are disclosed. Not that you have to wait. Being computer-free, I have to wait for paper. If you are capable of comparing item prices as you scroll the net or stroll the aisle, then you should be able to “dot com” any “Freedom of Information Act” statistics that interest you. (And, if they don’t interest you; snuggle up in your “happy app” while the brick and mortar façade that protects your apps is still intact.)

Be glad that you don’t have to dye your finger with purple ink to vote and maybe have your finger cut off or be shot because you did. Be glad that you get to vote on imposing a tax on yourself.

And, fortunately for them, those disposed by political process (at least in the U.S.) are seen, walking around, in public after disposition. John Quincy Adams served in the legislature after serving as president. We’ll see how the reverse of that plays out for Hillary. (Provided the “Obama Scare” doesn’t quarantine 2016 Democratic candidates.)

In closing, and, I guess an election year wrap-up, my personal thanks to Ernie Duckworth. Ernie has had to deal with moving the license bureau out of the Court House. He has transitioned the county from paper to computer voting. He has presented more complete commission minutes to print.

(Which I hope our new county clerk is allowed to continue.) I also hope that Mr. Bob See will continue to be a viable influence in the county.

Occasionally I get to volunteer some time at the Ralls County Historical Society to help sort through the boxes of records and file them away so they’re readily available for the increasing number of people coming in to do research. Recently I was able to continue work on the school records from Ralls County schools spanning most years from 1874 through 1960.

This time, after I had put the enumeration records in a stack according to date submitted, I took time to read some of the information included.

I was fascinated by the handwriting, so precise and evenly spaced. The paper stock, too, was a revelation. It was mostly heavier than today’s standard and though aged and folded for decades, stood the test of being opened up and laid flat without tearing. Bundles

from 1874 and 1875 were thicker than some of the ones from the 1920’s.

I easily envisioned the teacher carefully filling out the form, dipping a metal nib in a bottle of ink and meticulously forming each student’s name on the list. Rolls included a family name and then the list of siblings, usually at least 4 or 5 to a family and ranging from 5 through 19 years of age. Over a century and the ink has faded but is still readable.

Which brought to mind another recent activity. I was going through several boxes of photos that had not been put in albums. Not quite the stereotypical hatbox full of old photos of people we no longer remember; but, rather scores of photos of family members fondly remembered and well-loved. I had so much fun remembering the first months of the

HALLOWEEN When I was growing up in Oak Grove, nobody went trick-or-treating on Halloween. However, we did have a tradition. All the boys gathered on Halloween night, brought in farm machinery, bales of hay, and several outhouses, and put them in the middle of Broadway, filling up the street.

November 1 was all the

townspeople and farmers Halloween. Farmers came from miles around the next morning to see how much stuff had been hauled in to the middle of town, totally blocking traffic. They also tried to figure out how to get the wagon off the roof of the building that now houses Broadway Grille restaurant. At the same time,

grandkids and the childhood activities of my boys. I found copies I had made of family pix from relatives’ photo albums; my parents as newlyweds, my grandparents, and old school pictures.

There were some clippings of weddings and graduations. All of these made of paper and very vulnerable.

I wondered if they would stand the test of time like those records and old photos at the Historical Society. I marveled at the treasure trove of priceless information housed there, and thought of the treasure in my own boxes and albums. Then I thought of the thousands of pictures I had stored on my hard drive and in the cloud. Not just family pictures but countless photos of community events and school sports I have taken over the years for the paper. Not

many have been printed, only a few to update the picture frames situated throughout the house.

Are those pictures as safe as the ones stored in boxes and files in homes everywhere? Or are they more vulnerable? Who can really guarantee that they will always be there, accessible at a moment’s notice? And who can remember which file which pictures were stored under? On disk; on memory stick; or on the memory cards stashed in that little wooden box?

Maybe I need to take the time and go through those electronic files and archive printed copies.

Just to be on the safe side. Besides, albums are more fun to pass around at family gatherings. Not everyone can fit around the computer.

they also retrieved everything that belonged to them, and the townsfolk cleaned up the street. It was a tradition that went on for many years.

A Halloween like that could not exist today, since my home town has 18 police officers who would probably arrest you if you soaped a window. Children dressing up and going trickor-treating started in the late 1950’s, but back then, kids didn’t ask for candy. Instead of a sack for candy they had a little box and collected money for UNICEF (United Nations Childrens Fund).

I live in a new neighborhood, and on Halloween night, the neighborhood kids start about 6:00 and then

the cars start coming through dumping out trick-or-treaters. I finally started asking them where they were from.

The older ones wouldn’t tell me, but the young ones said Grain Valley, which is four miles away, and Blue Springs, eight miles. About 8:30 I watched a car pull up to my house. A bunch of kids got out. When I asked what school they went to, one of them said “Olathe”. I said, “Kansas?”, gave them a couple of Lifesavers, locked the door and turned out the lights.

Tips to Safely Prepare Your Holiday Feast

Preparing large holiday meals can stress our food safety skills to the maximum. First, there are the extra quantities of food to purchase, store and prepare. Then we may have to deal with extra people coming in and out of our kitchen trying to lend a hand. Finally, many of our guests are at greater risk for foodborne illness.

It is no wonder that food safety falls by the wayside during these hectic times. However, no one wants friends and family to get a foodborne illness from a holiday meal. Keep your friends and family safe with the following food safety tips: 1. Check your refrigerator temperature. Use a thermometer to ensure your refrigerator holds foods safely — between 36 and 40 degrees F. Warmer temperatures allow harmful bacteria to thrive and foods to spoil.

Fill a cooler or two with

ice to handle extra items if you are short on refrigerator space.

2. Thaw frozen meat and poultry safely in your refrigerator or under cold water in the sink. If you’re really pressed for time, microwave thawing is fastest, but make sure you finish cooking immediately after thawing.

Defrosting any perishable food like a turkey on the counter is dangerous because bacteria can thrive in the outer portions of the food before the inside thaws.

3. Wash hands with warm soapy water before and after handling food, as well as after using the toilet, diapering children, blowing your nose, playing with pets, etc.

4. Prevent cross-contamination. Keep raw meat and poultry and their drippings separate from other foods. Use separate cutting boards and knives for raw meat if

possible. Otherwise clean and sanitize before using for other foods.

5. Roast your holiday turkey in an oven set no lower than 325 degrees F. Avoid low heat cooking methods that call for cooking the bird overnight.

6. Use a meat thermometer to ensure safety and quality. Your turkey is cooked safely when the thermometer inserted into the inner thigh, but not touching the bone or the breast, reads 165 degrees F and turkey juices run clear. Cooking dressing in a separate casserole dish is safest, but if you prefer to stuff your holiday bird, fill the cavity loosely and make sure the center of the stuffing reaches 165 degrees F. 7. Keep cold foods cold (below 40 degrees F) and hot foods hot (above 140 degrees). Use hot plates, chafing dishes and crock pots to keep hot holiday

buffet foods at a safe temperature. Keep cold foods chilled by nesting dishes in bowls of ice.

8. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers within 2 hours of serving. Remove turkey from the carcass and refrigerate in small, shallow, covered containers.

9. Consume leftovers within three to four days.

Freeze leftovers for longer storage. Reheat leftovers to 165 degrees F or until hot and steaming. Bring leftover gravy to a rolling boil (165 degrees F) before serving.

10. Clean up with a solution of one teaspoon bleach added to one quart of water. Spray on washed and rinsed counter tops, kitchen tables and refrigerator door handles.

The nucleus of the Christian church of New London was planted here about the year 1839, as the result of the labors of Alexander Jones, a noted and able evangelist of that early time. Through his ministrations very many were converted and many others were constrained to avow themselves already convinced of the truth of Apostolic Christianity brought with them from the older States of Kentucky, Virginia and Ohio, where the wonderful work of Alexander Campbell and his earnest co-laborers was bearing such rich fruitage. To the simple faith so zealously proclaimed, they gave immediate and lifelong adherence.

Some of the names intimately associated with that notable period in our history are those of Major Hays, Sr. and wife, Mrs. Louis Mayhall, James Watson and wife, Taylor Jones

and wife, Mrs. Enoch Matson, Sr., Daniel Brown and family, and many more the writer is unable to recall, as the information is gathered from memory’s store, laid up from time to time from conversation held with those whose lips will never more reveal.

Nearly all have passed over to their eternal inheritance, of that heroic band who enlisted, and brought to the end with never a thought of furlough.

No church organization was effected at that time, but that band of devoted disciples was frequently visited, roused, comforted and nurtured by the labor of the godly and zealous evangelists of that early and stormy time.

So far as we are able to recall the permanent organization was the result of a meeting held in 1851,

by Elder Levan, of Iowa, a noted and aggressive preacher. It was in many respects, for that time, a most remarkable meeting, resulting in the conversion of more than a hundred persons – some of the best, most intelligent and thinking people of the community. As a consequence, from that ingathering there were chosen Award-Winning

proper church officers thought to be the wisest, the most consecrated of the number, from the subsequent history we may conclude few mistakes were made by that choice.

Under most promising conditions, the new congregation was started on the way to the fulfillment of its high mission.

For a time the meetings were held in the old school building, and on special occasions in the old court house; both of which have passed away with that earlier throng who worshipped there so many years ago. But a permanent fold was needed for the flock; a suitable barracks for the soldiers of the cross, consecrated to holy uses only. It was resolved in council to build a house of worship. By heroic effort, noble sacrifice and by the liberal responses from those not with them, but honoring their holy endeavor, this was accomplished. In the year 1851 they were able to occupy the old churchbuilding, still recalled by many in our midst, and by many to whom the recollection is followed by dear and tender memories of sweet and touching hours of praise, thanksgiving, rejoicing, sorrowing, for from its portals were borne our beloved dead, at its sacred ********* (copy unreadable) spoken those solemn words which wedded dear young lives for **** (copy unreadable).

In consequence of a storm which wreaked the old building in the year 1887, it became necessary to rebuild, which was done

in the same year, and the house occupied by the congregation as a home is a memorial to the liberal and earnest spirit of a brotherhood as self-sacrificing as that which animated the earlier band.

Limit of time and space forbids us to record the names and toil of those who from year to year have ministered at its sacred desk and borne aloft the banner of Him who died for the salvation of the world, teaching, exhorting, entreating us to press on toward the reward of faithfulness, they have never faltered.

In some things we have been especially blessed.

Few churches in the course of a fifty years pilgrimage have had so many consecrated leaders; few have had such long and satisfactory pastorates.

Dr. Hopson, that prince among men of his time, was the church from year to year, and led it so easily and so triumphantly.

Brother Hugley battled with us for the Master for eight long, sweet and sorrowful years. His gentle spirit alternately rejoicing and sorrowing with his flock. Others for shorter periods, but with a zeal which has not been barren of results.

For thirteen years there has gone in and out before this waiting people one, in our thought, the embodiment of all that is efficient, devoted and consistent in Christian leadership. I need not mention Brother Corwine; the reader cannot fail to recognize the picture.

J.H. Keach and B.F. Hixson, with 19 members, of whom only three are living – Mesdames C. Carstarphen, Bettie Briscoe and Larue Jones. In 1868 Ezra Carstarphen undertook to build a meeting-house. If he had not been a man of great energy and Christian zeal he would have become discouraged and quit; but so enthusiastic was he that he was heard to say: “I will build it if it takes all I have of this world’s goods.”

The lot was donated by Sam’l K. Caldwell, and the building begun. The cornerstone was laid by the Masonic fraternity, May 20th, 1868. The work progressed and the walls were up when Bro. Carstarphen was called by God to come up higher in Sept. 1869. After standing two years the women – a noble few – took hold of it.

Mr. J.W. Buchanan, with what he could get, put the roof on. Two of the sisters went to Hannibal soliciting assistance and were well assisted. They went to the Eagle mills, where

such men as James Brady and Spencer M. Carter respond to such calls. Mr. C. said: “What did Brady give you?” “Thirty dollars” was answered. He said: (handing the same) “I never allow Brady to outdo me.”

The sisters made a supper in the winter of 1871, clearing $395.95 (copy is indistinct), with which they floored and plastered the house. Then it must be seated. They served dinner in the house through Circuit court and were well patronized, until enough was raised. Sister Mary Nichols, who has long since been called to her reward, was one who never tired in the work.

Very few who were in the struggle are left.

Rev. W.C. Busby of Hannibal, was the first pastor, serving for seven years; after which Rev. W.J. Patrick served six months, and Rev. G.T. Colvin one year. Rev. B.F. Hixson was called in 1877 and served two years. In January, 1880, Rev. J.D. Biggs was called, serving one year.

Rev. D.W. Morgan was chosen and served two years. In Feb., 1885, Rev. Bland Beauchamp was called, serving two years.

Rev. J.D. Biggs was again pastor, serving till Feb., 1891, when S.P. Smith was chosen serving two years.

After him Rev. W.B.M. Sims served one year. The present pastor is Rev. J.D. Biggs.

South Fork Prestyterian The November 9th service began with a welcome from Pastor John Grimmett, announcements and prayer concerns. Prayer requests are for the McGee family, the DeOrnellis family, the Ham family, the Asbury family, Peggy Routt’s son and daughter, Sandy Jackson, Kaylee Beckham, Ellen Newbrough, Bonnie Utterback, Amanda Grimmett, John Grimmett, Don and for the persecuted church around the world.

Patti Grimmett played “I Would Be Like Jesus” for the prelude. Debbie Carey led in singing the congregational hymns, “Crown Him With Many Crowns”, “More Like the Master”, “O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee”, and “God Be With You.” Pastor John’s message was “What Should We Do?” Matthew 24:36-44 tells us what we should be doing while we wait for Jesus to return. Jesus tells us that we are his hands and his feet here on earth and whatever we do for the least of these we do for him. Jesus will come to judge the living, the quick and the dead. It doesn’t matter what your past has been, if you become a believer you will be saved.

who ignore him. You should be helping people by feeding and clothing those in need and praying for others. There are real needs right here in our community. One in five children experience real hunger. We pass by people every day that have needs. It doesn’t cost a lot to help those in need. Jesus says you don’t have to do everything but you need to open your eyes and your heart. As we prepare for His return, we need to minister to those in need, especially during this holiday season. It will be like doing something for Jesus.

You should be walking humbly with Jesus Christ and let him lead you to those in need and open your eyes and heart to them and be the body of Christ and reach out with love and compassion.

Kaylee Beckham collected the offering as Patti played “Have Thine Own Way” for the offertory. Pastor John offered prayers for God’s people followed by the benediction. The service closed with Patti playing “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” for the postlude.

Carl Wayne Redmon

Carl Wayne Redmon, 86, of West Ely, Missouri, died at 11:15 P M Wednesday at Monroe City Manor Care Center. He was born February 16, 1928 in Bethel, Missouri to Carl Joseph and Bessie Irene Brower Redmon. He married Loretta Mae Lehenbauer, daughter of the late Elmer and Lorene Norris Lehenbauer, May 28, 1950 and she survives.

Two sons were born to this union, Roger Eugene Redmon (deceased in 2009) and Roy Edward Redmon of West Ely; grandchildren; Micha ( Todd) Worrell of Monroe City; Amanda ( Lee) Von Thun of Palmyra; Joseph Carl (Katie) Redmon of Peru, Il.; Nicole Redmon and fiance, Shaun Harris of Monroe City; sisters: Rosie ( Jim) Goings and Mildred Roberts both of Shelbyville, Mo.; brother-in-law, Harry Lehenbauer and sister-in-law, Linda Pflantz Lehenbauer both of Kingdom City, Mo.; many nieces, nephews, great grandchldren and great great grandchildren. Wayne was also preceded in death by daughter-inlaw, Donetta Redmon, great grandson, Parker Redmon, sisters and brothers-in-law, Zella May Redmon, Nellie Maude ( Glen) White, Bobbie Roberts, Marie ( Wilson) Bevill, David and Joe Lehenbauer, and an infant brother,

Raymond. Carl Wayne had been employed for over 30 years at area lumber yards, most recently with Robey Building Supply in Monroe City. He was a 1946 graduate of Bethel High School and was a veteran of W W I I. He always found time to share his pleasure of his animal menagerie and garden with bible schools and other organizations.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Rev. Daniel Bock will officiate. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in West Ely, Missouri.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Monroe City Manor Auxiliary or to the donor’s choice. FOR THE RECORD Perry City Council A letter from Shirley Levings was read to the Perry City Council during public forum portion of the monthly meeting held on Wednesday, November 5. Mayor Dustin Wasson read the letter regarding the city’s decision on making the lady who purchased the trailer at 405B Wells pay the previous tenant’s bill in order to get utilities turned on in her name. A city ordinance is in place stating that the City can refuse service to a new tenant/property owner if there is an outstanding bill and that was the case here.

Mayor Wasson read Bill No. 192 by title only, “An ordinance amending Section 215.040 entitled ‘When city to do work’ of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Perry, Missouri.” A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to approve the first reading. A second reading was made, motion made and seconded. A roll call vote unanimously passed the second reading of the bill.

It was declared passed by Mayor Wasson and became Ordinance No. 476.

City Clerk Henderson gave information on animal control from S & R Animal Control. The council decided to hold off on hiring this service out at this time.

City Superintendent Don Huff reported that to repair the sewer jetter it will have to be sent to Springfield, Illinois. The

council decided to send two city employees to take it there. Huff obtained quotes on the siren repairs plus adding a new storm siren that would be centrally located at a price of $15,925. Henderson will check with USDA on possible grants and Mayor Wasson will check with MTROCG on grants as well and bring the information back to the December meeting. Huff provided a quote of $822 from USDI to stop off gas 2-inch main for removal of service line. Huff provided a quote from Clen Industries and Quality Chemical Co. for foaming root destroyer. He reported the blower motor is out on the meeting room furnace and a new one would cost $238 for the 25-year old furnace. Terry Hoyt provided a quote of $1750 for an 80% efficient furnace and $2500 for a 90% efficient furnace. Both prices include installation and are Lexair Brand. Huff provided a quote from HD Supply and D&K Supply for a 2-inch flush hydrant.

After this discussion the council unanimously voted to: Approve the $822 quote from USDI Purchase the foaming root destroyer from Clen for $935 Approve the price of $1750 from Terry Hoyt on an 80% efficient furnace Approve the quote $502.44 from HD Supply for the 2-inch flush hydrant

Huff reported that he had spoken to Vince Howald at Shelby Implement about the XMark mower the city purchased. Howald feels confident the small problems were just a fluke and added the mower does have a 3-year warranty on all parts except for routine maintenance items.

David Nowak at 405 Mayhall would like to replace the rotted rail road ties on the city easement by his house with concrete blocks. The council said that he can do that. Huff provided a quote if $508 for a light actuator from Command Light for the fire truck. A motion was made and passed unanimously to purchase the actuator for $508.

Huff reported that from time to time they do sidewalk repairs and a concrete mixer would save the city money by not needing a concrete truck to deliver. Bill Vitt has an electric concrete mixer he would sell the City for $300. I t will hold 6 cubic yards. A motion was made and passed to purchase the concrete mixer for $300.

Huff provided bids for repairs to truck #2 from McIntire Auto and Lick Creek Service. A motion was made to accept McIntire’s bid for two front tires (mounted and balanced) for $255.14 and approving the bid to replace the fuel pump on truck #2 for $222.88. Alderman McIntire abstained. Motion passed.

Huff reported that the scrap price for the old fire truck was $985.05.

Alderman Long met with David Vance of the Department of Conservation. He provided information on proper tree planting and types of trees that would be beneficial for the park. A motion to allow Mayor Wasson to spend up to $500 for trees at the city park. Motion passed unanimously.

Under new business Alderman Sharp reported that he had seen an ad from one of the land owners of the trailer park on Wells Street looking for individuals to put a trailer or camper on one of the vacant lots. The campers concerned Sharp and he added that it would lead to problems if this was allowed. Mayor Wasson said he would draft a letter to the land owners of any of the trailer parks in town regarding the mobile home ordinance that says campers are not allowed.

However, any campers that are already there would be grandfathered in.

A closed session was called to order at 7:13 p.m. after the regular meeting adjourned. A discussion took place concerning the hiring of employees.

A motion was made and seconded to offer full-time employment with all benefits to Colton Leake as a laborer at $8.00/hour. City Clerk Henderson called roll and each alderman voted yes. The motion passed unanimously. The closed session adjourned at 7:42 p.m.

pumpkin log roll

Filling for pumpkin log roll 1/4 cup softened butter 2-3 oz. packages of cream cheese softened 1 cup powder sugar 1/2 t. vanilla pinch salt Combine butter and cream cheese mix until smooth. Sift powder sugar and salt add to butter and cream cheese mixture and continue to stir until smooth. add vanilla.

3/4 c. flour 3 eggs 1/4 t. cloves 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup pumpkin 1/4 t. nutmeg 1/4 t. salt 1 t. lemon juice Optional chopped nuts of your choice Grease and flour bottom and sides of cookie sheet size 15x10x2.Use wax paper and line bottom of cookie sheet.

Beat eggs at high speed for 5 minutes until thick and lemony colored. Gradually add sugar beat 5 more minutes. Continue beating and add pumpkin and lemon juice. Gradually sift dry ingredients into pumpkin mixture and stir. Pour batter into greased, flour and line cookie sheet spreading evenly. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until done.

When this is done loosen around all edges and turn upside down on towel. Roll up and cool on wire rack or towel. When it is cool unroll and spread filling on it and roll back up. Keep refrigerated until one hour before serving. filling recipe for Pumpkin log roll 1/4 butter 2-3 oz. pkgs. of cream cheese 1 cup powder sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla pinch of salt

Gumdrop Cookies

(These are delicious and look so pretty for the holidays)

1 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups sifted flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups quick oats 1 cup coconut (optional) 1 cup gumdrops or cut-up orange slices ( cut the gumdrops and the orange slices I use both of them) Cream the butter, brown sugar, white sugar and add 2 eggs. Sift the flour, baking powder, soda together and blend into butter mixture.

Add the oats, coconut and gumdrops or orange slices or both Drop by spoonfuls on a greased cookie sheet and bake in a 375 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

Makes 40 to 50 cookies.

Boil 10 minutes together 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, 11/2 cup water add 1 Tablespoon of butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla set aside.

Batter: 1/2 cup white sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 cup of milk Drop by spoonfuls into caramel syrup.

Bake 400 degrees about 20 or 25 minutes.

Great with ice cream.

Raisin Nut Pie

2 Tablespoons cornstarch 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 2 egg yolks 1 cup cream 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup mincemeat Mix cornstarch, sugar, salt and spices.

Add cream and beaten egg yolks,raisins and mincemeat. Cook until thick. Cool and add nutmeats. Put in a baked pie shell.You can drizzle with caramel or top with whipped cream or coolwhip if desired.

1/2 cup butter, cut into about 8 pieces 1 teaspoon coarse black pepper 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups pan drippings OR 4 cups chicken stock DIRECTIONS *If using drippings from a chicken or turkey: Pour drippings into a fine mesh strainer then allow the drippings to cool a bit so that the fat rises to the top and starts to solidify. Use a spoon to remove the fat. If you don’t have enough drippings to equal 4 cups, add enough chicken or turkey stock until you have 4 cups of drippings. *If you’re not using turkey or chicken drippings, use 4 cups chicken or turkey stock. In a large saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium-low heat. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon coarse black pepper Slowly add in 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, constantly whisking to combine. After a few minutes, the flour will be well incorporated into the butter. Slowly begin to pour in drippings and/or chicken broth into the pan, constantly whisking. Allow the gravy to cook for several minutes, so that it can thicken up. Serve immediately, or keep on very low heat until you’re ready to serve.

2 lbs. of carrots, peeled, halved, and halved lengthwise 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon of raw honey salt & pepper to taste Instructions Preheat oven to 400º.

Peel carrots. Cut off stems, cut the carrot in half creating a wide and narrow half.

Then cut each half in half lengthwise. {ok, that was alot of “halfs”... whew} Put all the cut carrots into a bowl and add olive oil, raw honey, salt and pepper to taste. {about ½ teaspoon of each}. Toss to coat all the carrots. Spread carrots out on a baking sheet, making sure they are in a single layer and not stacked on each other. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool.

HONEY ROAST CARROTS

Water for cook the green beans 12 ounces fresh green beans 3 pieces cooked bacon, chopped 2 medium garlic cloves or 1 large, minced salt and pepper, to taste Using a large pot, add in the water and bring to a boil. Place the fresh green beans in the water and boil for 4-5 minutes, or until tender. Using a large saucepan, combine the cooked green beans, bacon, and garlic cloves. Simmer on low for 2-3 minutes to get all the flavors incorporated together. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Cross Country at State

Mark Twain HS Boys Cross Country Team

On Friday, October 24th, the MTHS XC team traveled to the Pike County Fair Grounds in Bowling Green for the Bowling Green XC Invitational. Results are as follows: Varsity Boys 15th - Devin Neff 18:40.00 (medal) 62nd - Corey Cornelius 21:34.74 63rd - James Parker 21:40.84 68th - Grady Franklin 21:51.88 83rd - Brad Tonkinson 22:59.56 92nd - Corbin Eckler 23:55.68 94th - Andrew Ogle 24:03.97 The Varsity Boys team finished in 9th place with 237 points.

12th - Anna Gill 31:18.50 It was a sunny afternoon with temperatures reaching into the mid70’s. The course was laid out with some flat stretches and a couple of mild hills. There were over 100 runners in the boys division and just over 60 runners in the girls division. My athlete’s looked strong and confident on Friday afternoon. This was by far the best race I have seen them run. Times are improving, and with the district race just around the corner, it couldn’t have have happened at a better time. Corey Cornelius and Katie Neff both had their best time of the season at this meet. Both James Parker and Kaelee Ogle had their 2nd best time of the season on this course. And Devin Neff is seconds away from setting a new personal best 5K time.

Throughout this season my athlete’s have invested considerable amounts of hard work, effort, and discipline to drop their 5K times.

getting faster. The 5K is an endurance race and the stronger your legs are and more fit your body is the faster your 5K time will be. Each runner set very impressive goals and I don’t think any of them have been disappointed in their performances. We are 10 weeks into our season, and after each meet, I am in awe of how much each of them have improved and stay positive to keep getting better.

Our district race will be, again, at the Pike County Fair Grounds in Bowling Green. We have an advantage in knowing the course. We saw several district competitors this past weekend at the Bowling Green Invitational and are working hard this week to advance to the state meet. It’s going to be tough. There is some fierce competition at this meet. Many of the teams we will face have longstanding programs, but we know what we have to do, as a team and as individuals, if we want to move on. At districts, only the top 15 individuals and top 2 teams will advance to compete at

the state level. I believe my athlete’s have worked hard this season and no matter the outcome, I am proud of all their efforts.

The Mark Twain HS cross country team will go back to Bowling Green (Pike County Fair Grounds) on Saturday 11/01/2014 for the District meet. Class 2 girls will race at 10:00 am and Class 2 boys will race at 11:10 am.

The basketball season for Mark Twain’s junior high teams started Monday, November 3, when the young athletes traveled to Community R-VI for their first games.

The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start ending the first quarter 15-2, Mark Twain’s two points coming from Paige Eddington on the line. Kenzie Ogle added one more from the line to end the half 27-3.

The third quarter saw the Lady Trojans held to 5 points while Mark Twain added 6 points, the combined efforts of Eddington and Ogle. Mark Twain continued to press

on and added 14 points and held Community to 10 points to end the game 42-23.

The young Tigers led the scoring in each quarter of their game against the Trojans. Mark Twain led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and ended the half 24-13. Holding Community to just 6 points in the third quarter, Mark Twain added 8 points. Community added only 2 points from the line in the fourth quarter and the Tigers added 11 points to end the game with a resounding 43-21 victory.
