Same sex marriage license issued in Juneau County BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD On Monday, June 9th, the Juneau County Clerk's office issued the first same sex marriage license ever issued in Juneau County. According to personnel within the department the license was issued to two women who also requested a waiver of the state’s five-day waiting period. The issuance of the license comes on the heels of a U.S. District Court ruling that the State of Wisconsin's ban on same sex marriage was unconstitutional. That ruling came in last Friday. Following the ruling, Wisconsin Attorney General J.P. Van Hollen filed a motion to stay the order, however on Monday U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb denied the request. In a press release issued on Friday, June 6, Van Hollen stated, “Nearly two and a half weeks ago, I explained to the federal court in Madison that even though a number of courts throughout the country have nullified state bans on same-sex marriages, those same federal courts, and in some cases appellate courts, following the lead of the U.S. Supreme Court, have stayed those rulings pending appeal. Consistent with those court decisions, and prior to her decision on Friday, I asked Judge Crabb to immediately stay any decision she might issue invalidating Wisconsin’s ban on same-sex marriage. Consistent with my concern for certainty and reliability understanding some actors may choose to take actions based on the decision, I asked for an emergency stay immediately following her decision.” Van Hollen went on to state: “The U.S Supreme Court will almost certainly decide this important issue once and for all during its next term. There is absolutely no reason to allow Wisconsin’s county clerks to decide for themselves, on a county-by-county basis, who may and may not lawfully get married in this state.” According to reports, Crabb's rulings have not addressed directly whether or not county clerks in Wisconsin may issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the interim; “I understand defendants' concern that some county clerks have been issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples since I issued the June 6 decision, but that is not a result of an injunction by this court,” Crabb wrote. On Monday, Van Hollen issued the following in a press release: “At today's hearing, Judge Crabb reiterated that Wisconsin marriage law has not been enjoined.” According to Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, “Wisconsin's marriage law is in full force and effect, and all state and local officials are under a continuing duty to follow Wisconsin's marriage law unless and until the court enjoins that law.”
NEW HOMES INDICATE GROWTH? For the past couple of years Juneau County has seen a down turn in the housing market, as the rest of the country has, but things may be changing in our area as home sales are going up at Castle Home Sales of Mauston. John Navis, Owner of Castle Home Sales, is not ready to say things are improving, however, he did state, “It is better than 2008 and 2009. Am I ready to say it is like it was in the late 90’s or early 2000’s, no and it may never be again.” Navis is encouraged by the schedule of homes to be set for this year but also stated, “We are one of the few that survived in this industry, Wick Homes did not even survive the recession and they were well established.” Castle Home Sales has been in business for 46 years and they pride themselves on customer service and a great team of people to work with. Schuler’s Manufactured Homes owner, Joe Schuler stated, “Mr. Navis makes sure his clients are satisfied and we have been working together for the past 40 years.” Castle Home Sales has been fortunate to still be in business and is the largest manufactured home sales in midwest Wisconsin. Navis attributes his success with the people that have stuck with him through the tough times and believed in the service they provide. This week a new home was put in place form Castle Home Sales, Schuler’s Manufactured Home Sales, and Zieman Crane Service on Crescent and Liberty in Mauston this week. DIANNA ANDERSON PHOTO

Mauston man charged with burglary William E. Parrish, 27, of Mauston has been charged in Juneau County Circuit Court with burglary-arming self with a dangerous weapon, possession of burglarious tools, criminal damage to property, and misdemeanor bail jumping. According to the criminal complaint Parrish is accused of a burglary that occurred on May 20, 2014 in the Village of Wonewoc. Juneau County Sheriff Deputy Cameron McChesney responded to the initial call at a location on North East Street. The property owner stated that he had video of the crime and could identify the suspect as Parrish.
At the residence there was damage to the front door from what appeared to be pried open. A bedroom door had been kicked open, damaging the door jam. Missing items from the residence included a 410 bolt action shotgun, a can with approximately $100 in change, and two pairs of pants which the video showed may have been used to cover up the shot gun. Parrish was interviewed about the incident, and at the time of the interview law enforcement reported that he appeared to be under the influence. Parrish denied involvement of the crime. Eventually Parrish is said to
have told the officer that he was on the victim's front porch. When law enforcement stated they already knew that after viewing a video of him, Parrish admitted to stealing the can of change claiming it had $45 in it. He is then alleged to have stated he took the money to buy ammunition so that he could end his life. The criminal complaint states that Parrish also admitted to taking the shotgun and storing it at a friend's house. Parrish is scheduled for a June 18, 2014 initial appearance before Juneau County Circuit Court Judge Paul Curran.
