THE AWARD WINNING OFFICIAL LEGAL NEWSPAPER OF JUNEAU COUNTY
No charges to be filed in missing salt The Juneau County Sheriff’s Office was advised Monday, May 13, that the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office will not be filing criminal charges as a result of an investigation into allegations of salt being stolen from the Juneau County Highway Department’s storage shed in Necedah. The Sheriff’s Office had received the initial complaint of an alleged theft of road salt on February 6, at 10:30 p.m. The investigating deputy made contact with the subject who had taken the salt and was advised that there was prior permission granted to take the salt. The deputy noted this in his report, however, it was later questioned whether permission was actually granted. An outside agency, the Tomah Police Department, agreed to investigate the incident on February 28th. Once the Tomah P.D. Investigator completed his investigation it was forwarded to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office for review. Late last week Monroe County District Attorney Dan Cary, acting as a designated special prosecutor, advised that his Office would not be filing criminal charges in the matter. Once the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office receives the completed investigation an internal review of the matter will be conducted by County Officials. In essence there are two investigations, a criminal investigation and an internal investigation. The internal investigation is used to determine if there were any county personnel or policy violations. Once the latter review is completed all of the investigative reports regarding the matter will be subject to release.
Man charged for pointing gun BY BETTY WAITS Police were dispatched to a home on Franklin Street in Elroy in response to a report of a man with a gun after a disturbance between neighbors. One witness, Karrie Jo Asselin, reported to police that she was with her husband, Paul, outside of their home and she observed Nicholas Gauf with a gun. She further stated that Gauf cocked the gun and pointed it at several people including her husband. She also alleged that she witnessed Gauf approach her husband with the handgun in an effort to chase him away from the vicinity of Gauf’s car. An officer from the City of Elroy later interviewed Gauf after advising him of his Miranda rights. Subsequent to waiving his rights, Gauf made a written statement admitting to bringing his 40 caliber pistol out of his house onto the front porch and approaching Paul Asselin who was in the vicinity of Gauf’s car. Citizens reported to the Messenger that the Juneau County Tactical Team had responded. The team did not respond to the scene. Officers from Elroy, Juneau County Sheriff’s Office, Hillsboro, New Lisbon and Mauston were on scene to assist. “The incident is still under investigation and other citations are possible in the matter,” explained Elroy Police Chief Tony Green. Juneau County District Attorney Mike Solovey has charged Nicholas Gauf, 23 of Elroy, with one count of felony second degree recklessly endangering safety. Solovey further originated a press release stating that he was charging the case and no less than 15 eyewitnesses were present for the incident. Gauf is scheduled for an initial appearance on June 19th.
