Mauston man charged with stealing vehicle while out on bond BY EVA MARIE WOYWOD A 49 year old Mauston man, Darin Skiff, has been charged in Juneau County Circuit Court with multiple felony charges including operating a motor vehicle without consent, possession of narcotics, felony bail jumping and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer. At the time Skiff was picked up on the recent charges he was out on a $3,000 cash bond on two other felony cases both of which were charged in 2012. Those 2012 cases are for manufacture/deliver cocaine and a first degree reckless homicide/delivery of drugs in the death of Jeremy Haas. According to the criminal complaint, on February 16, 2013 Mauston police officer Eric Sanner responded to a call at Hanover and Maine Streets to investigate a traffic crash. Upon arrival the officer noticed a white Pontiac Montana minivan with severe front end damage and the back passenger side tire pushed onto the snow bank. In front of the minivan was a white Chevrolet Impala also with severe front end damage. The officer noted that there was an extensive amount of debris in the street which indicated the crash occurred at a moderate or high speed. Although the engine to the Impala was running there were no occupants in either vehicle. A resident near the scene called out to the officer to check behind the van. When the officer did check he noted a white male he was familiar with, Darin Skiff, sitting in the snow and resting against
the van. Officer Sanner reported that Skiff's eyes were bloodshot and glassy and that when Skiff stood he was uneasy on his feet and staggering. When the officer inquired who owned the Impala, Skiff is said to have responded by stating he didn't know. Skiff then reportedly stated, "you're not trying to pin this on me?" Skiff apparently went on to tell the officer that he had been at a friend's house, Dan Day, prior to walking up to the scene of the accident. He went on to say that had he been the driver he would have runaway from the scene rather than staying near the accident scene. The officer then spoke to the resident near the scene who said she had heard a loud crash which caused her to look our her bedroom window. She went on to state she witnessed a white male exit the Impala and walk over to the passenger side of the van. She later identified Skiff as the white male. While on the scene of the accident dispatch advised the officer that they had received a call from the owner of the Impala and who wanted to report the vehicle as stolen. The owner of the vehicle is Deanna Lingl who stated that she was waiting for her sister to complete her shift at Randall's Bar and had left her vehicle running while she was inside waiting and that is when the vehicle was stolen. The officer noted in his report that he was aware that the Dan Day resi-
Darin Skiff dence, where Skiff had just claimed he left, was adjacent to Randall's Bar. Due to Skiff being out on bond with a condition of absolute sobriety the officer placed Skiff under arrest. When Skiff was searched the officer discovered a blue neck lanyard with the "Phillips Pharmacy" insignia. The lanyard contained the keys to the Impala and were later identified to be Lingl's keys. Skiff claimed the keys belonged to one of his relatives. Enroute to Juneau County Jail Skiff reportedly started banging his head against the squad car. The criminal complaint goes on to state that Juneau County deputies were needed to assist in gaining control over Skiff once they
arrived at the jail. During a search at the jail the officer reported that two loose pills fell from Skiff's pockets. Those pills were later identified at schedule II controlled substances. The complaint goes on to state that Skiff finally agreed to a breathalyzer nearly 10 hours after law enforcement first arrived on the scene of the accident. The reading from the test came in at .106%, above the legal limit. Skiff is currently being held in the Juneau County Jail on a $10,000 cash bond and has an initial appearance scheduled for March 6 before Juneau County Circuit Court Judge John Roemer.
