Two Greenfield Men Injured In One-Vehicle Crash Photo and story by Cle s McConnell Vede e Reporter

Two Greenfield men were seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash at 12:15 a.m. Sunday morning, eight miles south of Greenfield on Highway 39.

Miguel M. Munoz, 41, was northbound in a 2004 Kia Sorento when he ran off the left side of the roadway, overturned and was ejected, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.

A passenger, Vincent R. Lara, 47, was wearing a seat belt. The driver, Munoz, was not, the patrol said.

On the scene were ambulance crew members, Dade County fire fighters and two Springfield helicoptors.

Both men were airlifted to Cox South Hospital in Springfield for

treatment.

The vehicle was towed by Stop and Shop

of Mt. Vernon.

There is little research available on the nutritional safety of eating snow ice cream.

"I’m surprised there isn’t more information," said Tammy Roberts, a nutrition and health specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

"Frankly, a lot of it is conflicting. Basically, I’d say treat it like other desserts – eat it in moderation."

EASY RECIPE There are several simple ways to make snow ice cream. Every recipe begins with placing a clean container outside to collect clean, fresh snow as it falls.

Then, in a smaller

bowl combine one cup of milk or Half & Half, onehalf cup of granulated sugar, one teaspoon of vanilla extract, a dash of salt and then blend it until the sugar is melted and mixture is smooth.

“For anyone counting calories, another recipe calls for stirring in sugar and vanilla to taste, along with just enough milk for the desired consistency,” said Roberts.

Whatever you do, nutrition specialists agree it is best to stay away from some of the old-time snow ice cream recipes that included raw eggs.

"We've learned a lot about egg safety, and eating raw eggs is out of style. They are out of style whether in homemade ice cream, cookie dough, Caesar salad or other favorite dishes. The concern is over salmonella from raw eggs," said Roberts.

Alliance Water Resources Receives Flag of Davidson Wins Stockton Tournament Freedom Award Submi ed by Becky Minor

(Columbia, Missouri, December 23, 2013) – Alliance Water Resources, a dedicated participant in the Show-Me Heroes program, received their first Flag of Freedom award this month in recognition for hiring a Missouri Veteran.

The Show-Me Heroes initiative, which was launched in 2010 by Governor Jay Nixon as part of the larger Missouri Works program, was designed to help Missouri Veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserve find jobs when they return home from duty. It also serves as a productive tool for employers, allowing participating companies and organizations to showcase their pledge to help connect Veterans with valuable careers – a central component in restoring Missouri’s economic prosperity.

The award was presented Thursday, Dec. 5, at a ceremony held at the Alliance Water Resources Nevada Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Veteran hired is Les Stone, who served in the Army and National Guard branches of the military for a total of 10 years.

Stone, formerly employed by the City of Nevada, has been hired as a maintenance worker for Alliance and brings to the team a diverse background in maintenance.

Each Flag of Freedom award consists of a plaque featuring an American flag patch from the combat uniform of a member of the Missouri National Guard worn while that Citizen-Soldier or Airman was deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The plaque presented to Alliance features the flag patch of Sgt. John Attigliato, who served in Iraq in 2010.

Arma, Kansas, angler, Jim Davidson took the win at the American Bass Anglers Division 126 tournament December 28, 2013 (re-scheduled from December 21) on Stockton Lake. The weather was perfect, starting out in lower 30’s and getting up to lower 50’s with some southerly wind and lots of sunshine.

This was Davidson’s first ABA tournament, but he is no stranger to Stockton Lake, as he took an easy win with a 5-fish limit that tipped the scales at 17.01lbs, anchored with the second largest bass that went 5.33 lbs. He reported fishing most of the day in the mid-lake area and caught his fish on jerk baits and an A-rig. Davidson took home $468 for the day’s work.

Second place went to Eric Craft of Erie, KS. Craft weighed in a 5-fish limit that went 14.18 lbs and took Big Bass award with a 5.82 lber. He also reported catching fish on the A-rig and other soft plastic.

Craft was awarded a total of $452 for his efforts.

Brian Thompson of Springfield, MO took 3rd with 12.88 lb limit. The next four places were very close with 4th place 11.66 lb for Ashley Medley, 5th place 11.60 lb for Matt Theil, 6th place 11.36 lb for Robert Swearngin and 7th place 11.04 lb for Carl Cox. gler of the Year. The Angler of the Year honors will be awarded to the angler with the most points calculated by totaling points from the four best 1-day tournaments and the 2-day tournament.

The AOY will be qualified to a “Fish-off” held in conjunction with the ABA National Championship on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee October 22-24, 2014. The winner of the “Fish-off” will receive a fully rigged Triton boat.

Current standings put Eric Craft in the lead with 593 points, Carl Cox in 2nd place with 577 points and Jim Banks in 3rd place with 574 points. The Angler of the Year race is still wide open as there are four more scheduled 1-day events and the 2-

day all on Stockton Lake.

ABA was designed for the week-end angler and is open to boaters and non-boaters. It is a draw format with partner pairing taking place the morning of each tournament. Anglers from age 14 can enter these tournaments. Prizes for this event were donated by Happy O’s Resort, Eagle Claw Tackle, Albers Marine, The Outboard Doctor, Antlers Ridge and Pete’s Convenience Stores.

The next tournament will be January 18, 2014.

Incumbents Vicki Hartzler, US Congress 4th District, Ron Richard, Missouri State Senator and Mike Kelly, Missouri State Representaive will win another term. No vote by county residents to abolish township govern-

ment. Gun sales remain strong.

In education, with area schools seeing declining enrollment prompts action by Dade County schools. Law requring schools in Missouri to start in September, not the middle of August and end the last of May. Summer school for failing students is enacted by the Missouri Legislature.

I hope someone keeps a record of these predictions and lets me know next December, 2014.

MY TURN By Bob Jackson CASINO TROUBLE Jake, a single farmer from Lawrence County, Missouri, went to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to visit a friend and stayed at at hotel at an Indian casino.

He checked into his room on the 6th floor and then went to the elevator to go to the gambling floor. He gets on the elevator and the only other person in the elevator is a drop dead full figured skimply clad blackjack dealer. Jake is stunned as she batted her eyes at him and said “Sir, please PRESS ONE.” So Jake did and then everything went black and he woke up in the emergency room of Hillcrest Hospital. He vowed never again to go gambling.

My son Colt had wore this to a party and won too so I guess it really is ugly. haha Rick & I were surprised to get a beautiful Christmas arrangement from John & Debbie Hobell. John has been taking cancer treatments in Tulsa & we run into them usually every month.

Rick had took them a load of wood last week while they were gone.

I have been attending a lot of grandson, Skyler Baker's ballgames and this week they are playing in the Blue/Gold Tournament in Springfield.

Rick came down with something on Christmas Eve and is still down so he decided to go to the doctor today, Friday. Hopefully they will figure out what is going on with him. I know he has had a miserable week and missed all the good food on Christmas day.

ting the Country Cousins yearly newsletter out. We were really running late this year but finally got them in the mail Monday morning.

Last Sunday night, I crashed the Marlowe Christmas gathering at Paul & Cheri Walters home. I was wanting to visit with Rajean Marlowe who I use to work with. We had a great visit and they had more food than you can imagine.

They sent Rick home a platter full that he enjoyed. Thanks Last Monday, Tina Summers had to go to the doctor and get medicine and a shot for this horrible stuff that is going around.

Rick & I were some of those crazy people who was in Springfield doing last minute shopping. I hope next year I'm smarter than that and get my stuff done early. The traffic was a night mare.

I understand Jess Myers fell on the ice last Tuesday and is in a cast & on crutches. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Christmas at Mom & Dad's was smaller this year with only 12 for lunch & 8 for supper. We were glad to have Aunt Carol Jones and Bob, Carol & Billy Myers join us. Carol always brings me her wonderful fruit salad that I just love.

Curtis Payne & wife have been in Singapore over the holidays. It only took them 48 hrs to get there. Don't you know he will have some stories to tell.

Bonnie Taylor had both her girls, Carrie & Robin, here over the holidays and they all got some spoiling of baby, Henry McDowell.

I know I am forgetting something but hopefully I will remember it in time for next weeks news.

We all know she prays for us every day.

Now, we are proud that she has come to the time in her life that she can do some special things for herself and put herself first for a change.

But she still worries about her family.

Once a mother, always a mother. So, she continues to worry and pray for each of us.

Monday night was like another ice storm coming home, so I decided to cancel my hair appointment and just get home.

I worked on Christmas Eve, along with another girl. Stopped and got pizza for supper.

Jacob, Abby, Asa, Grandma Betty and Carol Jones all enjoyed it with us. We taught Asa and Grandma Betty how to play rummy. Next, we have to teach Abby.

Kim was able to work a couple of days due to the nicer weather.

His handy helper, Chuck Myers, has been sick, but is feeling better and is out and about.

Lucille Franklin continues to have a lot of visisitors and they have brought her food. We are going to put some weight on that lady, yet.

The other day, she had the Three B’s there: Betty Vandegrift, Betty Crutcher and Betty Younts. She is feeling better, but still very weak.

Christmas morning arrived and we were up fixing breakfast for Jacob, Abby, Asa and Kelbey.

Kelbey just got in from work, ate some breakfast and crashed on the floor. We let sleep a couple of hours.

So, we started our gift exchange around 10:30. Had some card playing. Then everyone left and Kim and I got around to head to out for

the Vandegrift get together.

On the way, we stopped and delivered a goodie tray for Richard and Maggie Jones and on to Bill Jones. Then to Liberty Baptist Church, where we all gathered.

Betty Vandegrift was the host for this joyful event.

Those gathering were Don and Linda Coble, Greg Coble, Katina, Brooke and Blaine Williard, Doug and Betty Vandegrift, Jennifer, Kirk, Taylor and Caden Vandgrif, Tim and Lynette Leeper, Jason and Taylia Leeper, Zach, Shay, Pearce and Knox Kiper, Courtnee Leeper, Lesia and Kim Jones, Dustin, Melinda, Wade and Chloe Jones, Jacob Jones, Abby Tate, Asa and Kelbey Bowles, and Darren, Sandy, Shelby and Blake Vandegrift.

We missed Matt Williard as he is still recovering from surgery.

Jared, Amber and Addy were missed as they had to work.

Hard to get this many people together in one place, but we do pretty good.

Special prayers were said for the family of Deanna Vandegrift and Lucille Franklin.

Lots of pictures were taken and lots of food were enjoyed.

The children opened their presents and with all the candy, they were feeling pretty good.

The dirty Santa for the adults gets more interesting every year. We are all kids at heart.

I do hope everyone had a blessed Christmas.

Back to work on Thursday and Friday, but then I will be off until next Thursday. A few days off to regroup and start all over again.

ANTIOCH PILGRIM NEWS by Lesia Jones Lucille Franklin got to come home on Friday and boy, was she proud to be home. The Home Health nurses are checking on her. She better be a good little girl.

Mom has been doing some cooking and going over and enjoying meals with her. Mom was sure lonely with Lucille in the hospital.

I bet Kaylyn Wehrman is still smiling with that new granddaughter here now. I know she gets plenty of attention. They are so much fun.

On Sunday, the weather looked to be a little nasty, but it wasn’t too bad. Asa and Kelbey Bowles, Kim and Lesia Jones and Grandma Betty Vandegrift attended church at the Arcola Christian Church to watch Wade and Chloe in the Christmas program. It was a really nice program and we all enjoyed it. Their preacher, Rev. Wheeler, and his wife, Cheryl, got a big surprise for being there for 20 years.

After church, everyone was not far behind Kim and me and came to our house for lunch, and then we went right into our Christmas.

We had to have it early as Kelbey had to work on Christmas Eve.

Keeping the little ones out of the presents is still fun. If I had a dime for every time they ask when can we open the presents, I could pay for my Christmas.

Finally around 4:30, we opened presents. All the surprises, Dustin couldn’t go into the basement; I couldn’t go into one of the bedrooms.

There were prizes behind every door.

Everyone was very pleased and surprised with their presents and I believe Dustin is happy we chose to have Christmas this year, not just for the children.

Afterwards, we enjoyed our traditional crab legs and shrimp supper.

Chloe ate enough shrimp; we just hoped she didn’t get sick.

Then, Wade had a lot of fun cracking crab legs.

This kind of supper is an easy clean up.

Throw everything on the table cloth, roll it up and walk it out to the trash barrel and you are done.

We had plenty of candy to eat and all the children took home a plate with them.

I keep hearing on the radio how some people are lucky. We are blessed to have all our family together, happy and healthy. Praise God. Jacob Jones got

called out on Saturday for a few hours and Abby babysat her nephews for a few hours, so her sister could go do some shopping. Jacob got called out in the middle of the night and was working into the early afternoon on Sunday.

Abby and Jacob had to miss her work party with Freedom Bank.

They were having their party in Branson.

Dustin got a call to go in, but someone else answered that call so he didn’t have to go in after all on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, I did a little more baking and candy making. Got around in the early afternoon and Kim and I headed to Springfield to run a few errands and then attend my work Christmas party. We had a great time. Little nervous about the roads, but they turned out to be pretty good. Glad to be home safe and sound and how wonderful to walk into that nice warm house.

Very few people keep their homes as warm as we do. Carmen and Rick are pretty close.

I remember a few years back that Rick started stripping at my house because he got hot. He was afraid he would get cold, so he had dressed warm.

Ha!!

Continue to keep Maggie Jones and her family in your daily prayers. They have had a lot of calls and visits from concerned family and friends. They appreciate everything.

The Presbyterian Church of Everton sent me the most beautiful thank-you card for delivering all their goodies to

the hospital. I am so willing to do it as they are willing to do the work that they are doing. They may be small, but together they can move mountains.

Every little thing you do for these children are so much appreciated by the children, their parents, grandparents, other family members and the staff that tries to provide all of this.

My car was totally packed with goodies and the little surgical dolls.

What a blessing you are to many. All I did was drive. Thank you.

I just want everyone to know that just because you can’t do BIG things, doesn’t mean you just do nothing. Look what this church does. God will bless each and every one of them.

The new year is right around the corner and what does it have in store for us? Obama Care, a year older and a few pounds heavier.

So time flies by so quick, but then again it just seems like yesterday.

My dad has been gone since the day after Christmas in 1983. You think of all that he has missed. More grandchildren and the great grandchildren keep coming.

But our mother has wrapped her arms around all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loves us all.

Like a good mother, she always put her children’s needs first and she always did without or took what was left.

But she never complained. She shows and tells us every time she sees us that she loves us and is proud of us. And

Another suggestion is to find someone to help you on your resolution project. We are reminded of this in Ecclesiastes.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (3:9-10). Find an accountability partner, someone who can help you when you are falling down or who can encourage you when you are ready to give up.

Most importantly, remember that you are not

perfect. Whatever your goals or resolutions, you will most likely find yourself missing the mark.

The apostle Paul knew about that. “There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). No matter how hard we try, we do fall short of God’s plan for our lives. In those moments it is imperative to remember that our value isn’t found in what we do, but in what Christ did for us. “And all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (v. 24).

Paul also knew about frustration. He struggled with his tendency to do the things that he didn’t want to do but reminded himself that it isn’t in his own strength that he would overcome, but in

the grace that comes from God. “So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am!

Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

(Romans 7:21-25).

By the time you read this article you may have already broken a few of your resolutions, or you might still be holding strong and making changes. Whatever the case, remember that every minute you breathe and every morning you wake the mercies of the

Lord are new once again.

The old adage from the 60s and 70s—Today is the first day of the rest of your life—is true, you know! No matter how many times you fall short, or how long you succeed, each moment is a new opportunity to overcome with the help of Christ.

Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

2014 Tax Season to Open Jan. 31; e-file and Free File Can Speed Refunds WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced plans to open the 2014 filing season on Jan. 31 and encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds.

The new opening date for individuals to file their 2013 tax returns will allow the IRS adequate time to program and test its tax processing systems. The annual process for updating IRS systems saw significant delays in October following the 16day federal government closure.

“Our teams have been working hard throughout the fall to pre-

pare for the upcoming tax season,” IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel said. “The late January opening gives us enough time to get things right with our programming, testing and systems validation. It’s a complex process, and our bottomline goal is to provide a smooth filing and refund process for the nation’s taxpayers.”

The government closure meant the IRS had to change the original opening date from January 21 to January 31, 2014. The 2014 date is one day later than the 2013 filing season opening, which started on January 30, 2013, following January

tax law changes made by Congress on January 1 under the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA).

The extensive set of ATRA tax changes affected many 2012 tax returns, which led to the late January opening.

The IRS noted that several options are available to help taxpayers prepare for the 2014 tax season and get their refunds as easily as possible. New year-end tax planning information has been added to IRS.gov this week.

In addition, many software companies are expected to begin accepting tax returns in January and hold those returns

until the IRS systems open on January 31. More details will be available in January.

The IRS cautioned that it will not process any tax returns before Jan. 31, so there is no advantage to filing on paper before the opening date.

Taxpayers will receive their tax refunds much faster by using e-file or Free File with the direct deposit option.

The April 15 tax deadline is set by statute and will remain in place.

However, the IRS reminds taxpayers that anyone can request an automatic six-month extension to file their tax return. The request is easily

done with Form 4868, which can be filed electronically or on paper.

IRS systems, applications and databases must be updated annually to reflect tax law updates, business process changes and programming updates in time for the start of the filing season.

The October closure came during the peak period for preparing IRS systems for the 2014 filing season. Programming, testing and deployment of more than 50 IRS systems is needed to handle processing of nearly 150 million tax returns. Updating these core systems is a complex, year-round process with the majority

of the work beginning in the fall of each year.

About 90 percent of IRS operations were closed during the shutdown, with some major work streams closed entirely during this period, putting the IRS nearly three weeks behind its tight timetable for being ready to start the 2014 filing season. There are additional training, programming and testing demands on IRS systems this year in order to provide additional refund fraud and identity theft detection and prevention.

by Retha Jones To all, I hope you had a good and Merry Christmas and all remembered what Christmas is all about, the birth of our Savior.

Jones Christmas is yet to come. It will be Friday after the New Year when we can be together except our Alaska family, who will be with us in thought.

Yes, I am thankful for a prolonged Christmas season. This ‘old lady’ is beginning to believe there is a Santa Claus when someone pays the remainer bill for my new tires!

How dear family and friends are to me.

We did have sorta, a white Christmas.

A week before Christmas, I came down with a bug, that and icy, cold weather kept me down.

Where’s my strength?

My first outing was our church Christmas Eve service that was beautiful. Large attendance. Big Christmas tree, poinsettias and candles added to the beauty of the sanctuary. Special music from the Nentrup family, Whitesell family and Rachael Peacock Young.

Years ago, Jerry Peacock was a Lockwood pharmacist.

We had a solemn communion service and at the close, those who could stand made a num-

ber of circles around the sanctuary, holding a candle as lights were turned out with all singing Silent Night. So beautiful.

Christmas Day for me was a beautiful winter day. Paul, Patty and I attended, along with many, many others, the community Christmas Dinner at the LUMC Family Life Center, hosted by Shirley Mitchell, her family and volunteers.

Dinner was baked turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, hot rolls, assorted desserts and drinks.

This year we enjoyed live music. As each one left, they could take two gifts.

The Joe Lawrences were recognized for being married 77 years on December 21. What a milestone! Congratulations to the Lawrences. I believe they have attended the Christmas Dinner every year.

There were seasonal decorations on all the tables. Lots of work that was enjoyed by all.

I came home and had a quiet evening of rest and memories. I watched the Branson Christmas parade, was a warm day.

We received a little snow, some ice and when

the warm day came, the ice fell off the trees, like a hail storm.

Do a precious lady to your prayer list. Doris Belcher, who is having heart problems, etc. She is at Cox South.

Richard got in off the truck route Sunday night.

Keep Karlos in your prayers and others who need our prayers.

My Christmas cards will be late this year or maybe early for 2014!

Several families, like the Joneses, will be having a late Christmas. I know the Snodgrasses, the Dixons and perhaps others.

While recuperating from the bug, I found a TV channel I enjoy. OPT Ozark Public Television, try it.

As I look back through my Christmas cards, some have mentioned reading “Lockwood News”. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

You’re my best students!

I had a really nice surprise visit one night when I was not feeling well. The Lockwood 4-H Club members and their leaders came to sing Christmas carols. I felt so much better, kids.

To all, I wish you a Happy New Year and continue giving thanks for the many blessings we here in Missouri receive.

Herbert/Clara Wehrman and their children, Harlan, Dorothy and Carl Lewis started getting their families together for Christmas years ago.

They met in their family homes taking turns, but eventually they had to move to bigger facilities and then voted to meet at Trinity Lutheran Fellowship Hall and Gym. The originators are no longer living but their descendants now number 93.

This year the Barbara Wehrman family were hosts on December 26 with the traditional basketball game between the Wehrman and Brand Clans.

Some high school boys and a few adult women also helped their respective teams.

The Brands were victorious with the final score being 67-65. Fred was the Brand’s high scorer with 29 and Caleb had 28 for the Wehrmans.

Stacey and Melissa also added a few points.

There was a number of new additions to families during 2013 and it was noticed that there were also some new faces of those dating certain family members.

Many of the high school, college, women, men, and younger chil-

dren had a fun volleyball game before all assembled to satisfy their appetites with grilled hamburgers, other potluck items and of course the traditional deviled eggs made by Natalie.

Desserts filled an entire table so no one went hungry.

Everyone was glad to see that Barbara had completed her treatments for cancer and is doing well and she asked that the new babies, newly married, and visitors be introduced.

Gifts were exchanged by those under high school age. The men who brought gag gifts took numbers and lined up and they could either keep their gift or exchange it. These gifts brought lots of laughter and comments.

The ladies exchanged white elephant gifts and followed the pattern set by the men.

Jane Roebke was in charge of the gift exchanges.

Scrapbooks of previous parties could be viewed. Everyone returned to the gym for the photographs by family groups and then the entire group.

Some left then by 2:30 p.m. while others stayed to play more ball or to visit and thanked Barbara and her family

Turf Grass Management Class Well Attended

Dade County MU Extension held a 3 week Turf Grass Management class at Pennington Seed in Greenfield. There were 15 participants in all; 13

were Pennington Seed employees. State and regional MU Extension specialists taught classes on: introduction to SW Missouri turf grasses, soil and site preparation for turf, cultural practices for healthy turf grasses and turf diseases, insect and weeds.

Speakers included:

Patrick Byers, Greene County horticulture specialist; Lee Miller and Brad Fresenburg, state horticulture specialists; Pat Miller, Vernon County agronomy specialist; Jill Scheidt, Barton County agronomy specialist.

December 27, 2013, Springfield, MO - Missy Skidmore knew the importance of taking her four year old son, Ayden, to the dentist regularly.

“His first visit to the dentist was at 18 months and I made sure he received his regular visits,” said Missy. Then, her husband lost his job and a routine dental screening at OACAC Head Start revealed Ayden needed 8 caps. Missy discovered her employer-sponsored dental insurance only covered routine preventative care, not treatment.

Missy said, “I was devastated. I looked at our (family) budget and knew it was going to take a long time to save enough money to afford to have his teeth fixed.”

Missy was told that delaying treatment for Ayden could result in further decay and significant pain.

Unfortunately, the bacteria that caused the cavities can make the children very sick. Many children who lack good basic oral hygiene habits or dental care can have severe tooth decay and gum disease which may result in physical pain, discomfort, and low selfesteem. And when oral disorders go untreated, they can lead to kidney, liver and cardiovascular disease, as well as complications associated

with diabetes. For Missy, knowing Ayden needed treatment that she couldn’t provide was overwhelming, frightening, and frustrating. Fortunately, Ayden didn’t have to wait for treatment.

Through the investment of local individuals in the OACAC Head Start Holiday Smiles campaign, Ayden was able to receive the treatment he needed. Every dollar invested by donors goes directly to oral health prevention and restoration work.

The great need for children's dental care is not an exaggeration. It's proven by some harrowing statistics. Last year, OACAC Head Start provided 1,720 children, ages 3, 4, and 5, basic dental exams and educational materials. Those exams revealed that 449 children, ages 3 and 4, required additional dental treatment. Many of the children need repair on 12 to 15 of their 20 baby teeth.

Most children have at least three areas of decay. Almost 10% of OACAC Head Start’s children are without dental insurance.

OACAC Head Start uses cost effective methods, such as on-site dental examinations, fluoride treatment, and dental education to reduce expenses.

Missy said, “Some people might think that fixing a child’s smile is superficial, but I

can tell you it is an important investment in Ayden’s future, in his health and his self-esteem!”

More games heat up this week and next.

Of interest is that the Greenfield boys will travel to Mexico, Missouri, a neutral site, to play Community R 6 of Laddonia, Missouri, a Class 1 school enrollment of 101 students grades 912 in a non conference game on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 4:30 pm.

The Miller boys tournament begins on January 6 and runs thru January 11, 2014. The Cardinals are the favorite to win the title.

BASKETBALL RESULTS The Miller boys beat Fordland 61-31 and played Walnut Grove in semifinal play at the Walnut Grove tourney. The girls lost to Hurley 76-60.

The Ash Grove boys won two games at Walnut Grove and advanced.

The Lady Pirates, playing in the strong Pink and White Tourney at Springfield, Missouri, beat two big schools, Rogersville and Republic, to advance.

LAST FOOTBALL NOTES 2013 The Springfield News Leader released their 2013 All Ozarks football team and only one area player made the team. The punter was Jordan Jack, Jr., Miller, 6 ft 4”, 215 pounds who had 27 punts for 1109 yards for a average of 41 yards a punt. His longest was 63 yards.

The Class 1 All District team included Jack and one player from Jasper. Osceola had 5 members; Marionville 5 members including Jacob La Salle, sophomore, quarterback, son of the Comet coach, Jamie La Salle; Skyline 4 members; Thayer 4 members; and 2 from Cabool.

This shows the weakness of football teams in the Spring River Valley Conference in 2013.

Liberal and Lockwood have to rely on coop schools for more players and next year Everton will co-op with Miller.

In Class 2 All District, Logan Allred (RB) and Spencer Rasmussen (LB) of Ash Grove made the team.

NEW ENROLLMENT FIGURES The Missouri State High School Athletic Association has released preliminary enrollment figures for all Missouri schools, grades 9 thru 12, to be used for class and district assignments in all sports in 2014-2015 and 2015 and 2016.

The results: Everton 50, Liberal 151, Dadeville 54, Miller 152, Golden City 70, Pierce City 214, Walnut Grove 80, Skyline 223, Greenfield 122, Marionville 227, Lockwood 127, Diamond 270, Jasper 150 and Stockton 340.

As far as football classes and districts, Sarcoxie should drop from Class 2 to Class 1. Ash Grove, Diamond and Stockton will stay in Class 2. Miller, Lockwood and Liberal with co-ops from Everton, Golden City and Bronuagh will remain in Class 1.

New schedules for football in 2014 will be out in February or March in 2014.

First shift employees at Pennington Seed gathered at noon in Warehouse 10 for the annual Christmas Dinner and Award Presentations.

They were joined by special guests Kim Slosson, Health, Safety & Environment Manager for the Great Plains Region, and Bryan Sbabo, Master Black Belt. The meal was catered by Maggie Mae’s of Miller.

Scott Beckley, Safety Manager, recognized the entire group for the facility’s safety record for the year. “I’m proud of each and every one of you and your efforts,” said Scott.

The Safety Committee members were recognized and presented to employees as the people to go to with any safety concerns.

The Safety Committee is made up of: Carla Stark, Return Center; Teresa Smith; Seed Lab/Office; Paul Evermon III, Warehouse; Kyle Birch, Plant/Small Package; Mark Hunter, Mulch; and Derek Hill, Penn Pak II. Also commended for having an accident-free 2013 were: the Warehouse, the Return Center, and the Office staff.

Truck drivers without incident or accident for the year were presented with bonus safety checks.

Drivers included: Willy Hensley, Kent Darmsteadter, Mike Moenning, Jim Shirk, Jerry Jones, Ronnie Litle, Kenny Gill, and Randy Greenlee. Drivers covered 389,572 miles with only one accident.

Service anniversary certificates were presented to employees by Keith Hankins, who said

company successful and strong. Certificates were given for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 35 years of service.

Keith ended the celebration with: “Thank you for your service and on behalf of the company, the manager, and me, enjoy the Christmas season with your families.”

Dade County Extension Change of Hours

A Merry Christmas Dinner was held on Christmas Day at the Family Life Center in Lockwood.

A time of food and fellowship was enjoyed by all those who attended.

This year was our 10th anniversary for doing the dinners so we celebrated by doing an additional give away as well as our usual drawings and goodie bags.

We also had Christmas songs performed by Pastor Melissa Harris from Branson, Missouri,

along with Bill Bethke, also from Branson, and Gabe Harwood from Springdale, Arkansas.

A special thanks

goes to Pastor Travis James and Lockwood's United Methodist Church for allowing us to use the building to

hold the event and for preparing things the day before.

Optimist Club Assists Lockwood Students To Own Books Submi ed by Mandy Winefedlt Op mist Club Secretary/Treasurer

Mrs. Lanita Hackney, Lockwood R-1 librarian, recently hosted the Scholastic Book Fair at the elementary school.

The Optimist Club of Lockwood was able to make a monetary donation to the book fair which allowed every child preschool through 8th grade at the public school, as well as those classes at the Immanuel Lutheran School, have the opportunity to pick out a book at no cost to the child.

The remainder of the funds, after the books were purchased for all the children, was used for purchasing additional

books for the Lockwood Elementary School library.

Special thanks go out to Mrs. Hackney for helping us with this project.

It was very heartwarming to see the children’s excitement as they choose their very own book.

The goal of the Optimist Club of Lockwood is to conduct positive service projects in the community aimed at providing a helping hand to our youth.

We hope to empower young people to be the best they can be.

What Is This Doing Here?

Guest speaker, Allen DeLay, share a few tes monies of people finding God through Gideon’s Bible.

MT. VERNON – “What’s this doing here?” exclaimed the lady in the hotel room.

Life had been terrible.

The holidays were approaching.

She had decided to end it all with several bottles of pills.

Yet, she found a Gideon Bible in the room, read the 23rd Psalm, and left the pills to start a new life ministering to others.

Allen DeLay, with the Mt. Vernon/Aurora chapter of Gideons, relayed several testimonies of people discovering God through a Gideon’s Bible in hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, and anywhere people congregate.

One motel owner called to get a missing

Bible replaced. The Bible was gone and a gun had been left in its place.

Last year, Gideons’ placed more that 84 million Bibles around the world.

How can you help?

First and foremost, prayers for the ministry.

At $5 per Bible, donations are needed and members to help distribute.
