Dade County Route J CLOSED West of Collins on January 29

Where: Dade County Route J CLOSED between Route W and SE 1250 Road south of Route 54 west of Collins When: 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 What: Route J CLOSED to allow MoDOT crews to replace a deteriorating drain pipe underneath the road Traffic Impacts: Drivers will have to find an alternate route around the closing. Drivers will be able to get to driveways and other entrances on either side of the closing. However, they will NOT be able to travel through the work zone.

Weather and/or work scheduling conflicts could postpone the project.

Greenfield Wildcats Courtwarming will be held Friday, February 6, 2015.

The Wildcats will play host to the Golden City Eagles with games beginning at 5 p.m. by the JV boys, followed by the Varsity boys. the Highlighting evening will be the crowning of the 2015 Courtwarming Queen.

The Courtwarming ceremony will be held between games.

The Dadeville Bearcats are gearing up for their basketball homecoming Friday evening, February 6, 2015, hosting the Humansville Tigers.

The Bearcats and Tigers game will begin at 5:30 p.m. with half game played by JV boys, followed by the Varsity boys game. The crowning of the 2015 Homecoming Queen will take place after the varsity game.

The girls basketball game will follow the coronation.

The Bearcats theme for the evening is Patriotic.

The Everton Tigers Basketball Homecoming will be held Friday night, February 6, 2015.

The Tigers will be hosting Bradleville. The games will begin at 5 p.m. with the JV boys, followed by the Varsity girls and wrapping up the Varsity boys.

Highlighting the evening will be the crowning of the 2015 Basketball Homecoming Queen after the boys game.

The 2015 queen candidates are: Kylee Wilson, Tayler Limpus, Kala Svendsen, and Chasity Huff.

The theme for the Tigers is Superhero.

Spirit days are all week prior to the homecoming game.

A homecoming dance will be held in the high school gymnasium after the coronation.

Ronald Perry Leaming Ronald Perry Leaming passed away January 19, 2015. He was a lifetime resident of the Maple Grove Community.

Ron was born on January 8, 1944 in Lockwood Missouri. He was the son of Perry and Zelda (White) Leaming. He graduated from Golden City, the trade school in Kansas City for automotive and the San Juanqin Valley College in California.

Ron farmed, ran a garage and was an over the road truck driver. He raced cars and was a private pilot for many years.

He loved traveling and

traveled the world over.

His favorite pastime was hunting and training bird dogs and riding horses. He was a member of the Carthage Restoration Church.

Ron left behind a wife of 52 years, Gail Ann(Winchell) and a son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Kellie Leaming; and a daughter and sonin-law, Kamala and Paul Sutton; one grandson, Wrenn and two granddaughters, Anastazia and Ariel; and one greatgranddaughter, Addyson.

Ron was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Greenfield, Missouri. He held the office of past Dis-

trict Deputy of Grand Lodge of Missouri, The Carthage Council, The Royal Arch, The Scottish Rite, Commandery, and Eastern Star. He leaves behind many friends and family and will be missed.

Visitation is 1 to 2.

Service is at Restoration Church, 916 Country Rd. 170, Carthage, Missouri.

Burial will be at Dudenville Cemetery, Dudenville, Missouri with Masonic rites after the service on Thursday, January 29, 2015.

Wilma Louise Hessee Case of Springfield peacefully departed this world on January 18, 2015 at the age of 89.

She is survived by son, Gary Hessee and wife,

Peggy, of Springfield and daughter, Terry and husband, Kent Wynes, of Greenfield. Also surviving are two granddaughters: Tiffani Killingsworth and husband, Dusty; and Terra

Clifford W. Moenning, 80, of Milford, Kansas, died January 2, 2015, at his home.

Clifford was born August 14, 1934 at Lockwood, Missouri, the son of Albert H. and Martha F. (Witzke) Moenning.

Clifford attended elementary school in Arcola, Missouri and moved with his family to Milford in 1949. He graduated from Milford Rural High School in 1953.

Clifford served in the Army National Guard and was a heavy equipment operator for Geary County, and later for Walker Stone Co, where he retired as a foreman, having worked there 40 years. Clifford was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City. married Clifford Anna L. Johnston on July

6, 1955 in Junction City, Kansas. Anna survives of the home.

Other survivors include: a son, Dennis Moenning and wife Jessica, Lost Springs; four daughters: Cheryl Ferrell and husband, Guy, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Andrea “Jayne” Clark and husband, Clifford, Belle Plaine; Shelly Gorton and husband, Kevin, Milford, and Nicole Loecke and husband Pete, Rose Hill; a sister, Kathleen Taylor, Center Point, Texas; 18 grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Delbert, Elmer and Melvin; and a sister, Dorothea Flinn.

He will be greatly missed by the family Pa-

Filings for city, villages township and county boards ended on January 20, 2015.

The local election will be Tuesday April 7, 2015.

At this time, the only contested races are for city council posts in Greenfield and Lockwood and a mayor’s race in Lockwood.

At the Dade County Group Improvement meeting last August, 2014, a motion was made to buy twelve 6-foot artificial lighted Christmas Trees to replace the live trees, because we are having a hard time finding people to donate the trees. It was decided that we would donate them to the City of Greenfield for more decoration to the square.

Being the President of the group I was voted to bring the trees to the City.

I called the City Clerk, Cathy Harringnton, and ask her to put me on their January 6, 2015, Council Meeting agenda.

Present during the meeting was Mayor James Evans; four city council members; the city’s lawyer, Allen Rose and Mrs. Rose; City Clerk Cathy Harrington; City Chief of Police Tim Larkin; an insurance representative; Ann Hem-

bree and myself from the Dade County Improvement Group.

At this meeting, I tried to tell them why we want to donate the trees.

Also to let them know why and when the Group was founded.

During my presentation, I was abruptly interby Council rupted member Jack Pugh, saying the City does not want or need the trees. It will just be more work for their maintenance people.

Council member, Vicki Lollar, said, “Why don’t you call the Chamber of Commerce and give it to them? They might want to put it up for you.” member, Council Kelly Mayfield, also said, “Why don’t you give it to the poor people that don’t have money for Christmas trees. Like I do. I donate to the poor people.

Council member, Beth Wright did not say much but agreed with the rest of the council.

They all agreed not to accept our donation. I then ask them if they will make a motion so they can vote on it. Council member, Jack Pugh, said it did not deserve a motion. That is how the presentation ended. They did not want any more discussion.

Every member of the Dade County Improvement Group was so surprised that Mayor James Evans did not have any comment on the matter.

When this was voted on at the Group meeting, he and his wife were members of the Group. They were part of the vote.

Dade County Improvement Group had sponsored the July 4th activities for 4 years.

They have been sponsoring the activities for October Festival and have taken over sponsoring Buffalo Days for the last 2 years.

They also put up the decorations for Halloween, the fresh Christmas trees for Christmas.

They will continue to do this as long as they can get support from the community or anyone that want to help.

Anyone that wants to be a member of this group, please come to our meeting every first Monday of the month at the Community Building at the city park at 7:00 p.m.

Butner will lead the growing group of community papers.

Butner joins Lewis County Press from C&R Supermarkets (“C&R”) in Macon, Missouri, where he supervised several stores and wrote ad material for the last three years.

Before C&R, Butner and his wife, Mary, owned and operated Butner’s Country Mart for over nine years. A native of Macon, Butner has lived there all his life.

“I love rural Missouri, the quality of life and all the benefits it has to offer,” said Butner.

“The rural newspapers are important to our small towns. I’m excited to be a part of the team that keeps this important, they are as important as our utilities.”

Butner will work directly with each paper’s editor and publisher to help them achieve their editorial and revenue goals.

Also, he will be instrumental in folding in additional papers. Lewis County Press has grown from one newspaper to its current portfolio of nine publications during the past four years and actively seeks additional acquisitions.

Sharon Baptist Church, located five miles east of Greenfield on Highway 160, has called Ken Roller to serve as pastor. He had been serving interim pastor at the church since August 17, prior to this call.

At its annual meeting, held the afternoon of Sunday, January 18, the church adopted a church calendar for 2015, and set some ministry goals.

Among these will be a Valentine event to honor ladies of the congregation, a pre-Easter evangelism campaign, in April, preparation of a hospice Bucket Kit to be used by Baptist Global Response to meet critical

needs of a family served by our international missionaries; backing and participating in the Ozark Prairie Baptist Association Children’s Camp to be held in July at Baptist Hill near Mt. Vernon, as well as a mission trip by our association to a church plant in Red Oak, Iowa, also in July; distribution of the “Jesus” film DVD to homes in our area. Still other plans are in the works for the last half of the year, including participation in “Operation Christmas Child” shoe-box Christmas gifts to children through ministry of Samaritans Purse.

This past November, church members packed

19 of these boxes as we took part in this project for the first time.

We are a small (in number) rural church serving a big God, desiring to join hands and hearts with other area churches in ministering to our communities, to our state, and to our world.

Sunday morning Bible study begins at 10 a.m., followed by worship at 11 a.m. On Wednesdays, we provide a lunch at 12 noon, followed by Bible Study.

Do we believe the Bible? Is it REALLY Gods Word? What does it say about Faith?

FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1).

Do we need FAITH? Without FAITH, it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6).

So how serious are we about our Faith?-How serious is God about our Faith? For by grace you have been saved through FAITH & that not of yourselves; it is the GIFT OF GOD, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

attended. The missionaries that spoke to us were John and Renae Roller, who spent 18 months in India. A nice lunch was served before the meeting. Our ladies served angel food cake and toppings at the Dade County Nursing Home Friday morning.

Wednesday night services are going well.

We have prayer and Bible Study with Elton and Kay White leading; RA boys led by Ben Keathley; GA girls led by Sarah Moller and Nikki Pickett; Mission Friends led by Kay Decker; Book Study led by Sarah Daniel; and Youth led by Matthew and Sonja Keathley.

Happiness comes and goes but God’s joy is constant and forever.

Lockwood Lady Tigers Take 2nd At Liberal

Greenfield outscored the Pirates 34-21 in the second half. Hunter Montez and Tristan Long combined for 38 points Montez was chosen on the all tourney team.The Wildcat girls, seeded 5th, finished 6th losing to Lamar 58-29, racking Humansville 66-29, then were stopped by Miller 66-47. Taylor Burns and Carsen Sims led the Wildcats.

LOCKWOOD: The Tiger girls played in their second straight tournament at Liberal and, like the week before, took 2nd. They beat Colony Crest, Kansas, 66-33 in the opener, nipped Galena, Kansas, 55-53 in the next game and then lost to Pittsburg Colgan 55-48 in the title game. Alexis Byrnes and Rylee Neill made the all tourney team. Byrnes scored her 1000th point in the title game.

The boys played at Stockton and went 1-2

losing to Pleasant Hope 69-54, whipping Dadeville 65-54, behind 26 points from Ben Schnelle but were defensed in the fifth place game by Springfield Greenwood 48-38. Schnelle made the all tourney team.

EVERTON: The Tiger teams played at the Mark

If one pays any attention to the justice system that is supposed to be working in the U.S. It has to be very amusing and disturbing at the same time.

There are those who believe the government is broken and may not ever function properly again and they could be right!

The legal system is broken and will take years to correct if possible at all.

The jails are overflowing. One must commit murder to be committed to a jail for more than a few days, and then it may take

years to get a decision or even a hearing before a judge or jury!

Rulings of guilt and/or money to be paid back are simply over looked and basically the guilty party can say “stick it” and nothing is done.

There are many changes that should be made and could be made, however changes are not welcomed by judges and attorneys. The reason being, primarily, “job security”!

A person told me, only this week that they felt the death penalty should include those found guilty of dope

dealing! My reply was, it sure would make more jail space!

How long will the public put up with this broken system? The court can, for instance, award you a million dollars but it is up to you to collect it.

And that could cost you a million and a half!!!

You can have a tenant move out, owing you any amount of money, assuming the court finds in your favor you still don’t have your money and may never get it unless you pay another attorney more than the amount you are owed. It is a joke.

face it. It is slightly better than no system at all, but our legal system as a whole is dysfunctional.

This is not only my opinion, but the opinion of many others. Just ask around! Probation is the answer for everything in today’s legal system. A lot of roads could be repaired with the money spent on coddling criminals and a dysfunctional justice system.

Don’t blame the Sheriff’s department or the police department. It does them no good to make an arrest, only to have them set free or only have their hands spanked!!

Since when are warnings, or alarms, something to fear or try to stop?

Smoke alarms are placed in (hopefully) every home, in order to alert and even wake up the occupants because something is wrong. In this example, smoke and fire have the ability to do great harm to anybody in close proximity.

Tornado sirens are sounded when there is either a witnessed tornado

on the ground or a radar indicated circulation. In this example, the high winds of a twister has the ability to do great harm to anyone in its path and is intended to send people to a safe place.

There are many other warnings that could be given as examples, that are only intended to help and not hurt. We warn/teach our children about circumstances that are unsafe, or harmful.

This is done because we

love our children and only want the best for them.

The warnings found in God's Word are put there by a loving God in order to put His children on alert, or wake His children up, intending only to send people into the safest place. His loving arms. This is why Jesus gave us the signs of the rapture of the church and the signs of the second coming.

No one yells at a tornado siren to be quiet, during the storm. No one pulls the battery out of a smoke alarm during the fire. Jesus wants everyone to be awake and ready when the trumpet sounds

and so do I. The signs of the times are being revealed everyday, faster and faster they come.

Just remember, not very many heeded the warnings by Noah. Not everyone heeded the warnings of hurricane Katrina. Both of these warnings were given for the purpose of calling those in danger, to get to a safe place.

Love is being willing to give the warning, even though not everyone will listen. Jesus is coming soon. You have been lovingly warned.

January birthdays: Aunt Lucille Vandegrift, Terry Myers, Sherri Friar and Jacob Jones.

On Friday night, Kelbey and Asa Bowles and Kim and myself drove to Dadeville for supper and had a nice meal.

David Clabough is home and doing good following his open heart surgery. Kim Jones visited him on Saturday afternoon and he was in good spirits. A lot of good neighbors, friends and family have been helping him with his chores around the house.

Jim Shirk is home after having a stroke and doing pretty good. Some therapy may be needed.

Kim Jones visited with him on Saturday afternoon. Keep both in your prayers as they recover from these health conditions.

Kelbey and I attend church at Liberty on Sunday. Wade and Chloe was also with us. We had a Ladies Retreat meeting afterward. Confirmed our two speakers and also our 2 musical specials. After church, I visited with mom for little while. Melinda came by and got the little ones.

Wade and Chloe spent Saturday night with Kim and I. It was raining, but Wade insisted his PaPa take him coon hunting. Kim said he has created his own monster. Wade loves to go with his PaPa coon hunting. Chloe and I had some special one on one.

Dustin and Melinda went out with several other couples.

On Sunday night, Eric Steeley joined us for supper. I had visited earlier with Bill Jones and took him some goodies.

William, Wade and Chloe Jones had parties all week long. They stayed with Aunt Kelbey and Uncle Asa, Grandma Gerri Torres and Aunt Missy and Uncle Trevon Odgen while Dustin, Melinda, Kim and Lesia Jones went to Houston Texas to MD Anderson.

The kids thought this was fun. We were able to spend time with Matt and Damaris Jones. It is so great to live in a small

community.

We have received so many calls, cards and everyone telling us they are praying for the family. It is so much appreciated. The acts of kindness, offers of help in any way. It just touches all of us that so many have reached out to us.

Our deepest sympathy to the families/ friends of Walter “Buster” Hargis. Buster fell on New Year’s Eve and had surgery on New Year Day. The surgery went great, but his body didn’t respond to all the other stuff.

I stopped and saw him on Friday night and they had him up walking but he starting going down on Saturday and passed away early Sunday morning with all his family by his side.

Buster will be missed around the area. He worked everyday up until the day of his accident. Pretty good for someone 90 plus. May God comfort all the family at this time of their lives. Never ready to lose a loved one.

Lucille Franklin continues to improve everyday, but it is still going to take her time. My mom spends a lot of time there to keep her company.

My sister, Linda, took our mother to her doctor appointment on Thursday. She had a lot of blood work done.

Dustin, Melinda, Kim and Lesia Jones headed to Texas on Tuesday morning for Dustin to be seen at MD Anderson.

We stayed at the home of Matt and Damaris Jones and they were our taxi around this horrible city.

Ha!!

Melinda was ready to get home and drive her own truck and only 2 lanes of traffic. She did an awesome job driving and getting us there safe and sound.

On Wednesday, they met with their doctors; test on Thursday. Then wait and see. On Friday, Dustin and Melinda went out to eat and take in a show. We all went out one night to a Bar B.Q. place.

On Saturday, Dustin and Melinda headed out and did some shopping.

Matt, Damaris, Kim and myself went around to some different shops.

On Sunday, we helped Matt move some stuff into his garage attic that he just got finished.

They were great hosts to us and we appreciated all they did for us while there. Matt took vacation on Wednesday and Thursday and worked half day on Friday.

On Monday, Dustin had another doctor appointment and Damaris took us to that one. We enjoyed some wonderful steaks while there. They were so good; we had left overs on Monday night.

Up early Tuesday morning and headed back home. The long drive was not real good on Dustin. He did have some pain and hopefully have it under control.

Everyone has been so great to all of us. The children stayed with Aunt Kelbey and Asa for a few days; Grandma Gerri for a few days; and Aunt Missy and Trevon Ogden had them for a few days. They were passed around and spoiled rotten.

Thanks to son, Jacob, who kept the chores done up; to Eric Steeley who stayed at our house, kept the dogs fed and the wood furnace going; to Larry McGuire keep Dustin’s furnace going and he is now a real chicken farmer, but he doesn’t like turkeys. Ha!!

We have all received so many cards, calls and the list goes on. Have heard from friends and family from all over. God is blessing us with all your prayers. We will take every prayer pal we can get. So many acts of kindness. Could not start to name all the people or things they have done for our family.

Buster Hargis. We were in Texas and was unable to attend. But I do think he will be remembered for his bright red truck/casket. They have lots of pictures and videos and Buster will live on for many years through memories and all the stories.

Back to work after a week and the girls had done an awesome job of keeping my desk clean. It was great.

Dustin went to his doctor in Springfield on Thursday.

Had his chemo classes and by afternoon was having a cardio work up.

On Friday, he had his port surgical put in to start his Chemo IV. He has been a busy person and Melinda right by him with his folder of medical papers in her blue bag. It has been a wind whirl for them, but again everyone has been so great to help in anyway. There has been a lot of help with getting the kids to school or picked up.

Wade and Chloe spent the night with us on Sunday night.

On Saturday, Asa and Kelbey Bowles, Kim and Lesia Jones head to Oklahoma. Made it to my brother, Darren Vandegrift, around 3:30.

Headed out to eat supper with some other couples.

Then went to the Garth Brooks concert. It was a barn burner. We really enjoyed it and would go to another one. Got home around 11:30 and was eating. The party crashers went to bed, but Darren, Sandy and myself got in their hot tub and visited until 3:30 in the morning. Kelbey visited for little while. Kim woke up in the chair and wondered if we were going to bed. Guess so. Up the next morning, visiting and enjoyed breakfast.

Hurried home so we could attend the funeral of Larry Spain.

Our deepest sympathy to this family. It was a wonderful service and Larry would have been proud.

The Daily Buzz Babette Terhune, Administrator of the Dade County Senior Center in conjunction with the Southwest Missouri Office on Aging has started a new service for seniors in the Dade County area.

The “Daily Buzz” is a service that offers a daily phone call for seniors over the age of 60 who live alone.

The purpose of this program is to ensure that older adults can maintain their sense of wellbeing while remaining in their homes and community. It also can provide social contact and emotional support and provides a sense of security and safety. In some cases “The Daily Buzz” call is the only contact the customer will receive that day.

bette at 417-637-2626. She will need basic health and contact information for the customer so she can set up a schedule for the time of “The Daily Buzz,” call.

This service is extremely valuable to care givers, family members or any senior 60+ that you are concerned about. It is also great for those who have just been discharged from the hospital or rehabilitation center.

On Sunday afternoon, Lynetta Leeper visited with her mother, Betty Vandegrift.

My mother, Betty Vandegrift, has not had a good week and had to go to the doctor. Her granddaughter, Kelbey Bowles, is watching over her.

Kelbey and Asa Bowles’ new house is really taking shape. By the time you read this, it should have the doors and windows in. It is getting exciting. Won’t be long until Kim and Asa will be working on the inside and Asa will learn a new trade of a carpenter.

Again, I am sure I am leaving something out, but if that is the worst thing I do, I am in good shape. Ha. Courtnee Leeper, daughter of Tim and Lynetta Leeper, will be married in getting Arkansas on January 31.

It will be a very small service, but grandmother, Clara Leeper and Betty Vandegrift will get to attend. Wishing Courtnee and Micheal a long happy life.

Dustin will not have chemo for three weeks now and then we will go through 5 days of chemo again. He will have to make another trip to MD Anderson for another scan to see how the chemo is affecting the cancer. Continue to pray.

We have God in our corner and I know we will have a great outcome. Just sorry that anyone has to go through this. Like I told Melinda, this is hard on the care giver, hard on the children as they know things are different. So many comings and goings to the doctor office, blood work.

So all of you continue to be our prayer pals and we will all kick this nasty cancer together. Have a great week.

Pilgrim Antioch News week ending January 23.

Took off Monday as Wade and Chloe were out of school. Kim and I took them to Springfield to the movies and out to eat. They were so good.

While eating, we ran into Janie Walters’ mother.

Visited with her for awhile. Give her credit for being her age and out running around in Springfield. My kind of lady. Not sitting at home.

Today, Monday, was Dustin’s first day of chemo. It took longer than they thought being his first day, etc. and the children didn’t need to be there.

Tuesday, second day of chemo and doing good and on to work. I picked him up and took him home. I stopped by and visited with my mother afterward.

Wednesday, third day of chemo doing good, but really tired and on to work. I picked him up.

Grandma Gerri and Grandma Steele have been helping get the children on the school bus of a morning.

Thursday, fourth day of chemo and very fatigue. Decided to go on home and rest.

Friday, last day of chemo for three weeks. It really knocks you, but that’s ok as long as it’s kicking the cancer. He went home to rest again.

He will see his doctor on Monday and they will do blood work each Monday to monitor it.

Sweetheart Dance

I’m glad it has warmed up, but now we will probably have some cold weather in March.

Well, we can’t complain too much.

Joe and I are both getting well after the rough time we had with the flu, the Respiratory kind, and it took its time to leave.

Sunday morning, I gave the morning message at Community of Christ in Stockton, then we had a pot luck dinner, before having a baby shower for Jessica Colbert & her fiancé, Devin Whiteford.

We played some games then she opened her gifts. She got a lot of nice baby things and we all enjoyed cake and punch. Lisa Ross made the cake and I made the punch. There were about 15 people at the shower.

We got home from church about 3:00 p.m.

and I was tired.

Monday, I went to Independence to meet The Old Book Man, and his wife. He had copies of the text we wanted to use in Sunday School Class this year, and it was about 1/3 the price of other places. I took some used books for him to sell. After we exchanged books, I went to visit our cousin, Vera Clark, in Excelsior Springs. She is doing pretty good for having just lost her husband, Virgil, last week.

I then drove on up to Osborn, Missouri, to meet my sister, Leola Baumgarden, where we got ready for my sister’s Fern Curtis, 90th surprise birthday party. We really surprised her.

When she saw me, she thought I was the one whom she was going to have dinner with, but when we got to the Long

Horn Steak House in Liberty, a lot of the family was there too. SHE WAS REALLY SURPRISED! There were 25 people there for her party, all family. Leola made her favorite cake, a German chocolate. There were some people there that I hadn’t seen in years and some new people I hadn’t met, but Fern knew

them all.

I stayed all night with Leola; then, went and visited with Fern for a couple of hours before coming home Tuesday. I got home about 3:30 or 4:00 Tuesday and I was worn out by then.

Joe stayed home to go to the doctor and take care of the animals.

I don’t usually go that

far by myself, but the weather was good and I didn’t have any problems.

Let’s all remember to PRAY for those who are sick, those who have lost loved ones, those who are in nursing homes, and all the people serving our country. Have a wonderful year!

I want to extend sympathy to Sara Jean Engroff on the loss of her brother, Charley, last Wednesday night. Sara is a cook at the Greenfield Elementary and use to run Sara Jean's greenhouse on the Greenfield square.

Last Thursday and Friday, Mom, Scotty,

Jason Cooper & I cleaned on a rental house in South Greenfield. Nothing like cleaning up after renters, a total pig pen to say the least. I won't say anymore except I know why people hate to rent to people, especially people with animals in the house.

Thursday, Rick & I went to Baptist Bible College to watch grandson, Skyler Baker, play basketball. They won over Rhema Bible College 8669. Skyler had an excellent game with over 20 pts. Then, on Saturday, we went to see Mayce & Jayce Baker play at Willard. They both won their games and Mayce scored 6 pts. Then on to another game of Skyler’s and they won again.

Rick, who really isn't a sports fan, loves watching the grand kids play.

Colt met us after the game and little Miss Lucy came home with us for the night. Since she started pre-school, she talks a mile a minute but we don't understand it all.

Sunday, we spent the day with Grandma Patsy and Uncle Winton Hargis came out. He really got a kick out of Lucy and stayed a whole 2 hours visiting. Also, Kelbey Bowles, Logan & Stormy came out to see Lucy, too.

She keeps us all on our toes.

Alex & Colt enjoyed going to see the movie "American Sniper" and said it was very good. I haven't heard anyone say

Haven’t we appreciated some sunny days?

And then there was a few nice warm days. We do have a variety of weather but little snow so far.

Nancy says Anchorage has not had snow like they should.

Some of you will remember nurse practitioner Carrie Lucas who worked down at Lockwood Mercy Medical Center. The Lucas’s lost their 7 year old son due to the flu. Carrie left Lockwood for a job much closer to home.

And after much treatment and tests Kevin Stump succumbed to cancer. Parents are Eu-

gene and Connie Stump.

And we have another, Larry Spain had a heart attack. Larry and Kevin had been students of John’s. To these and others we might have missed, the community extends our deepest sympathies.

Now for a brighter side. Good news about James Schilling. He is improving, can take soft foods and able to say a few words. What a blessing. James is in a medical center in Atlanta, GA. Add to your prayer list, Madge T. who is at Joplin Mercy Hospital for surgery and treatments.

My last report was, she is

now in a room after being in ICU. And Joanna B. is more comfortable since having some shots. She feels like getting out some.

Son, J.L., says I must be improving as I have been somewhere four days straight after being home, away from the flu.

So far, no flu! Friday I had business in Greenfield. Saturday, J.L. took me to Wal-Mart in Lamar shopping. Sunday to church and Travis sermon title, ‘Can You Hear Me’, down my line! Monday morning I had a doctor’s appointment, that J.L. could take me before

he leaves at noon for his home in Quincy, Ill. He came Saturday noon.

Tuesday was my rest day.

Yes, I am stronger, thank God. Wednesday afternoon, David and Donna Kennedy of Springfield came down for a visit.

She is my son-in-laws sister.

More good news. Natalie Wehrman came home the 15th after spending several weeks convalescing at Good Shepherd Nursing Home following surgery. She’s another person happy to be home. Today Thursday, she was looking forward to friends coming

they didn't like this movie.

For anyone still wanting their cattle hauled, Logan will continue Dad's legacy of hauling.

We miss Dad every day.

We are trying to adjust but it has been very difficult, as anyone knows that has lost a loved one.

Jack Killingsworth got moved to the Greenfield Nursing Home Sunday evening after spending almost 2 weeks in the hospital. He had his gall bladder removed and a hernia repaired.

We wish him a speedy recovery.

Ann & Megan Glenn are enjoying the beach at S. Padre Island. Now that's the way I want to celebrate my 60th birthday. Way to go, Ann!!!

Was sorry to hear Jarad Johnson's mother in-law passed away unexpected last Friday. Her service will be in Forsyth on Saturday, January 31st.

A lot of people have been checking out the Sky Zone in Springfield with their kids and having a blast. Looks like a good way to unwind and wear the little ones out.

Congratulations to the Greenfield Boys Basketball Team on winning 3rd place in the Stockton Tournament over Pleasant Hope in a close game 63-62.

Sunday afternoon, Paul, Patty and J.L. were entertained by an armadilla rooting in the yard. The last we saw of him he was crossing the street.

I read in the Springfield paper where Vivian Lapham passed away.

Some may remember her, she was mothers neighbor on 12th street. I believe she had a daughter, Mary, who lived with her. She was 97.

I would like to close with this article. “The ability to speak several languages is an asset, but the ability to keep your

mouth shut in any language is priceless.”

A bit more news this Friday morning. Some will remember Jerry McSpadden, a former Lockwood teacher. His wife, Doris June (Long) passed away. They lived in Springfield, John and Ruth Neill attended visitation. Ruth and Jerry were classmates.

And this morning I see a new addition is being built on the Pump and Pantry at the four way stop.

Joy Church’s Hope Center & Outreach Advocacy Office

Pastor Shawn Patrick who is pastor at Joy Church, a non-denominational church in Greenfield, Missouri, opened Hope Center on December 1, 2014.

The pastor preaches straight from the King James Bible.

The case worker at the Hope Center is Shonna Shorter-Kramer, a native of Dade County and her assistant is Kourtney Grisham.

Shonna is a professional case worker with 15 years of experience in domestic violence, substance abuse, and court advocacy.

She also taught middle school for two years.

Shonna and Kourtney provide case management in order for clients to seek medical, educational, legal, social services, housing and resources and referrals.

Advocates assist the people in order to empower them, so they are educated about issues and are able to get on their feet.

Hope Center also provides outreach services and home visits.

When a client or family graduates into their own housing, a volunteer

provides follow-up and support.

“This is not a move em in, feed em, move em out kind of program. We want change and healing in their hearts and we want them to be saved by Jesus. Jesus Christ already suffered for us. All we have to do is teach them about God’s love,” said Pastor Shawn.

Joy Church has service on church Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday morning Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. Children are taught by Kourtney Grisham and adults with pastor. Church service, praise and worship is

at 10:15 a.m.

Joyful recovery is on Mondays at 6:30 p.m.. Go feel the Holy Spirit in the church located across from Meeks in Greenfield.

Volunteer Advocate training begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the fellowship room connected to church. They have no dress code. Just come as you are.

I’ll assist you.

The HOPE CENTER is funded entirely by Joy Church. This is the second homeless shelter

NEVADA – Care Connection for Aging Services will offer a free event to enroll people in the Health Insurance Marketplace on February 5.

Care Connection will have trained counselors there to guide people through the choices of health insurance during its enrollment event from 4 to 7 p.m. February 5 at the Nevada Public Library, 212 West Walnut St. The event is aimed at people who need to enroll themselves or their families in the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Care Connection has licensed navigators to help people through the maze of the

online Marketplace, which was established by the federal government.

Open enrollment continues through February 15. People who already have a Marketplace plan are encouraged to review their options for the new plan year.

The Marketplace may provide private health insurance savings based upon consumers’ income. Most people who apply through the Marketplace qualify for premium tax credits and savings on outof-pocket costs based on household size and income.

People who go to the event need to bring Social Security numbers and dates of

birth for them and their household members and an estimate of their 2015 household income.

Most people must have health insurance or face a fee

of 2 percent of their income, or $325 for each adult and $162.50 for each child in 2015 – whichever is higher, according to the federal government.

Pastor Shawn has begun and it is a strict program.

Clients are expected to pass random drug/alcohol screens and most importantly go to all church services offered.

All clients must meet with pastor each day and pray with him.

The shelter is about assisting people to know the Lord and live with a heart for God. They are taught work ethic, hygiene, budgeting and routine.

At this time pastor or Ms. Kramer, neither one, are receiving a salary.

They are working for the Lord and called by God to do this work.

The Outreach office is through the back door of the Hope Center which is funded by Joy Church congregation.

Anyone may call and come by to receive assistance, clothing, or needs.

Needs at this time include: toiletries, cleaners, laundry detergent, toilet paper and paper towels.

Most of our clientele

are from Greenfield, Missouri. They camp in the woods, live in abandoned houses, a vehicle, or at the local drug houses and want a new life with God. Two have come from Lawrence and Cedar counties.

Missouri’s homeless population rose 67 percent between 2007 and 2012, and now stands at 1,582, according to a study by the Governor’s Committee to End Homelessness.

The federal definition of homeless is anyone who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence, or that have lost their housing. Between 2007 and 2012, the number of unsheltered homeless in the state doubled and the number of homeless families increased by 89 percent.

Many of those who are homeless are suffering from any type of addiction, mental diagnosis and/or are victims of family violence situation.

All client information is confidential, however, Joy Church can testify about many successes this year that God made whole again, healthy working people in town, off substances and living Christian lives.
