House On K Highway A Total Loss Vol. 150, No. 30 $1.00

Everton Fire Department responded to a house fire on K Highway, southwest of Everton early Wednesday morning, January 7th at approximately 1:45 a.m.

A neighbor, Steve Baldwin, had made the call to 911.

The house was totally engulfed when firefighters arrived. High winds enabled the fire to spread quickly.

Responding to the fire were the Everton Fire Department, Greenfield Fire Department, Dade County Ambulance Service along with a Dade County Deputy.

The home, belonging to Rosalyn Bewley, was a total loss.

No one was living in the home at the time of the fire.

If you have been to the Hulston Mill Historical Park recently, you probably have noticed that we are updating our

painting, it was decided to frame the original andput it on display in order to perserve the artwork.

The Dade County Historical Society appreciates all the work and attention to detail that Jessica, with some counseling from her artistic grandparents, put into this lovely painting.

The assocation is comprised of area businesses who banded together to form a group to promote Stockton Lake.

This year’s publication is 52 pages with information on all activites at Stockton Lake, event calendars, fishing and hunting inforamtion and tips, fishing guide info, and a list of members.

A three vehicle accident on I-49 five miles south of Lamar at what is locally known as Poundstone Bottoms took two lives just before midnight, January 6.

A southbound tractor/trailer rig was stopped on a bridge, partially off the roadway, having struck the guard rail and over corrected, ending up in the left lane.

A Cedar County arrived ambulance shortly afterward on its way to Joplin, and

parked ahead of the stalled tractor/ trailer to offer assistance.

A second tractor/trailer rig approached from the north striking the stalled tractor/trailer and the ambulance before leaving the roadway and ending up in nearby trees.

Both fatalities were in the second tractor/trailer, driver Dale E. Burdick, 54, of Cuba, New York and passenger Donald D. Ellsworth, Jr., 43, of Dansville, New York.

The driver of the first tractor/trailer, An-

toin D. Crawford, 27, of Toledo, Ohio, suffered moderate injuries and was taken via air ambulance to Freeman Hospital in Joplin. The Cedar County ambulance was unoccupied at the time and sustained only minor damage.

Cargo from one of the tractor/trailers was scattered for hundreds of feet along the highway and right-of-way.

This is a year that two vacancies occur on sevenmember boards of education in Missouri.

In Lamar R-I, three candidates have filed, to date, incumbent Randy Day, Robert (Bobby) Bronson, Jr., and Chris Davey.

Well the past two weeks has went by like a dream. New Year’s Eve afternoon, Dad was unloading gates when one knocked him down and broke his hip. Went to the hospital and they done surgery New Year’s Day with everything going good. Got him up walking the very next day and he was doing great. But the next day, he couldn't keep food down and he was having trouble with his blood pressure. Then his kidneys quit functioning and in the wee

hours of the morning Sunday we got a call to get to the hospital quickly. From there it went down hill quickly and Dad passed away Sunday morning a little after 7 a.m. Needless to say we were all in shock & still are.

Dad's service was Wednesday afternoon with burial in the Pennsboro Cemetery where he had already put up their tombstone back in the spring.

I can't thank everyone enough for all their support during this difficult time. I was happy that my son, Trevor Hawkins, flew in from North Dakota and we got to spend some time with him before he flew home on Friday. We have had a lot of food brought in and lots of visitors & calls.

My news this week will be short because I just can't get my mind to

work correctly.

Congratulations to Jason & Leslie Cunningham on the birth of a baby boy, Dalton Gregory, who arrived on January 8th. Dalton tipped the scales at 7 lbs., 12 oz. and was 20 inches long.

Proud grandma is Lana "Decker" Farmer and great-grandma Kay Decker of Arcola.

Also congratulations to Jonathan & Amanda Nash on the arrival of a baby girl, Kinley Faye.

Kinley was welcomed by a huge fan of family at the hospital. She tipped the scales at 7 lbs., 14 oz. and 21 inches long.

Proud Aunt Cricket "Wooldridge" Marshall was there for the big event.

The Everton Lady Tigers fell to Golden City 57-64 in overtime. Everton was down to 4 players in the 3rd quarter and only 3 players midway in 4th quarter but played

their hearts out to the end. Taylor Limpus scored 32 pts, Andi 7, Bre 5, Hailey 5 & Kaytlin 8.

Talk about a tough bunch of girls. They hung in there.

Travis & Desiree Pirtle just got back from a 10 day mission trip to Hawaii. Grandparents, Beth & Greg Killingsworth, have been busy taking care of the little girls while they were gone.

Rick Baker had his monthly check-up in Tulsa Monday and all went well. I want to thank Richard McMasters for going with Rick since I couldn't.

Everyone have a great week and cherish your loved ones because you never know what the day is going to hold.

Winter has come in full force. I’m trying to stay warm by thinking how nice it will be when warm weather comes and I can sit in my porch swing on my porch!

After having Good Shepherd Nursing Home as his home, Jerry Chappell passed away this week. He had been a resident of the home for

many years.

A Lockwood raised girl, Mary Beth Morris Bird, passed away this week in Springfield where she and her late husband, Bob Bird, lived for years. She was the daughter of Tom and Thelma Morris of Lockwood.

A Greenfield resident, Marjorie Sliman, passed

away at Good Shepherd Nursing home. She and her daughter, Johnnie Belle Dean, were residents of Good Shepherd.

We extend sympathies to all these families.

Some in Golden City may remember Elburn Dodson of Springfield.

He recently passed away in Mountain Grove. His wife, Theda, is my

cousin.

During the Christmas school vacation, the youth had a lock-in one night at the United Methodist Family Life Center. Some 20 kids had a night of fun games, lots of visiting and eating.

Paul and Patty Evermon prepared the meal of tacos, etc.

And the flu bug is

very active. Paul and Patty both took it, Patty at Christmas and Paul at New Year’s.

Tuesday, Paul and Patty took a long trip to Milford, Kansas, close to Topeka, to attend her Uncle Clifford Moenning’s funeral. There was snow but roads were okay.

I like this quote:

Main Street congregation met Sunday morning at 9:30 for Sunday school. We adjourned to the sanctuary at 10:45 for worship services.

The congregation opened our services by singing “You Never Let Go.” Special music was provided by Rhondo Preston.

Rodney’s message was on “Making This Year Your Best Year.”

Let’s take a look back at the biggest predictions for 2014.

Oil prices will continue to rise slightly and the end the year at $104 a barrel. Reality: Oil ended the year at $52 a barrel, half of what the experts predicted.

Interest rates will rise, especially on mortgages and intermediate term loans, such as cars. Reality: Interest rates fell 1/4%.

The stock market would stall, ending up at or around 13,000. Reality: Stock market rose 13%, setting an all-time record of 18,000.

2014 would be the year of wearable technology. With the advent of Apple’s I-watch, the experts thought this would be the “must have” technology. Reality: Wearable

computers failed.

The Royals would not make the playoffs. Reality: The first world series after a 29-year absence.

The reality is that we do not know what 2015 will bring. However, God’s word does provide us with a template to ensure that our year starts off in a way that is pleasing to God. The race before us.

Literally, the “race present” or the “race set before us.” This means the race you are in. We don’t necessarily get to choose the race we are in, but we are to run it well. You may find the race hard; filled with unexpected challenges, but you are to run the race well.

Five tips for winning your race: 1.

No cheating!

Proverbs 19:1. Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.

2. Never alone. Genesis 2:18. Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. Examine yourselves. 1 Corinthians 11:26-28: Don’t give in. Romans 6:12-14: Give it to God. Romans 12:19: We will be encouraged by each other’s faith. Romans

1:12.

3. Don’t run out of fuel. 1Timothy 4.4-6: For everything created by God is good.

4. Take pit stops. Hebrews 4:9-11: A Sabbath rest remains, therefore, for God’s people.

5. Be glad you’re in the race. Phillipians 4:6-7: Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. We know the joy that comes through living daily in Christ and running the race with him.

1. Are you glad you’re in the race? Satan can’t take your salvation, but he will try to steal the joy. Start giving thanks now for the position you are in.

2. Are you in need of refueling? Come and rededicate yourself.

3. Are you in the race?

Tournament play and conference games were part of high school basketball action last week.

Some SRVC and Polk County League games were played.

In the Miller boys tournament January 5 thru January 10, top seeded Crane won the 8 team affair with easy wins over Sarcoxie, Ash Grove and Purdy. Greenfield, seeded 2nd, took 5th with a win 56-54 over the host.

Two top performances came from Hayden Shepard, 31 points, Greenfield and Ben Weinreis, Ash Grove, 45 points.

Play this week will be focused on the Golden City boys and girls tourney. The boys version started in 1956.

On the boys side, look for the Lockwood boys and Jasper boys to meet in the finals. The Jasper girls are seeded first. Both Everton and Dadeville teams will be playing.

Next week’s action has tournament play at Stockton boys and girls.

The boys version got started in 1970.

Lockwood will play in the girls tourney at Liberal. The Everton teams will be playing in their conference tourney.

GREENFIELD: The boys were upset by Purdy in first round play at the Miller tourney 66-55 but then beat Jasper and Miller to win consolation honors Greenfield is 9-4 on the season.

The girls lost to Verona 50-39 at home and are seeded 3rd at Golden City.

LOCKWOOD: The Tiger teams went 4-0 last week.The girls beat Diamond 49-28 and cruised

by Humansville 75-21.

The boys won over Diamond 54-46 in SRVC play and racked Humansville 69-25. Both teams will be playing at Golden City tourney play this week.

The New Year is here and it is starting out COLD. It was -1 degrees at 4 a.m. January 8th at the Trudell farm.

I am glad to feel good for a change. I had a lot of bad days in 2014 maybe 2015 will be a lot better.

We had Christmas several times last year.

Once in Springfield, Missouri, with the Burrows family: LaVonne and Thad Burrows, grandson and wife, Chris and Amanda Burrows, (we don’t get to see them often as they moved to Indianapolis Indiana) and granddaughter, Laura Burrows and friend her coBronwin, worker.

Another time here at the farm with the Odells and some of the grandkids: Chris Trudell, Jessica Pecor and Shannon Robison, and great grandson Dwayne Pecor, plus Shirley Burge and her partner, Scott Brown.

Then just before New Year’s, we got a call and our son, Ed Wiss and wife Cheryl Wiss, came to the farm where we had ham (not turkey), for dinner. We had a good time visiting with them.

Joe and I ended the year with the flu. Oh what a fun time, but we are doing better after taking tamaflu and antibiotics.

Then on top of that, one of the furnaces at

church quit working so only half of the church is heated. Thank goodness it is warm in the sanctuary and kitchen, so the water pipes didn’t freeze, but the class rooms are all cold, as is the dining room. we hope to get it fixed SOON! 94-year-old My brother-in-law, from Grandview, (Thurston Stafford), fell and broke his collar bone and he is now in rehab.

Then, my 89-year-old sister, Fern Curtis, from Cameron, Missouri, had a slight heart problem and has been in the hospital for that several times this year. My 71-year-old (youngest sister), Leola Baumgarden, fell and hit her head. She had have several to stitches. I guess I didn’t want them to feel bad so I fell in our living room and had 4 torn places on my right leg, but I just put steri strips on them and stayed home. I am getting tired of all this bad stuff.

We have had a lot of fun watching all the birds and wild life this year, and are doing good,for OLD PEOPLE. Let us remember to pray for all those who are sick or have lost loved ones, in the Nursing Homes, in the service serving our country. Have a wonderful year!

MT. VERNON-As 2014 ends, cow calf producers in the Ozarks are thinking about the approaching calving season. University of Missouri Extension livestock specialists believe 60 to 65 percent of this areas calves are born from January through April.

"The number born each month varies, but February and early-March probably has the most activity," said Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension. "That means this is a good time to work on some key management practices."

Cole says there are several management practices that need to be considered during calving season. Although preparation varies from farm to farm, here are some basics to consider.

"Sort cows as much as possible into appropriate management groups," said Cole. "At least separate the fall calvers, even late summer calves, from those due after January 1."

It is also a good idea to sort mature cows away from

first-calf heifers. Young females need closer attention and usually better quality feed to calve in a body condition score (BCS) of 6.

"First-calf heifers can be fed late in the day, just ahead of dark and they're more likely to calve in the daylight hours. This should please you and your veterinarian," said Cole.

Daylight-born calves actually have a greater chance of survival, as the weather is a bit warmer than in the middle of the night.

It is also a good idea to select the most naturally protected pasture from north winds as a calving pasture. If the favored calving pasture doesn't have protection, big bales of hay (and cedar trees) may be considered as a windbreak.

"Now is also a good time to plan what you'll do for those severely chilled calves. Perhaps consider a calf warming box," said Cole.

If scours have been a persistent problem recently, a scour vaccine for the expectant cows and especially

the heifers may be in order six to nine weeks before the first females are due. The first year, a booster three to six weeks prior to calving, is required.

It is a good practice to feed springers adequately before calving and in early lactation. "Shorting them on protein and energy results in weaker calves, reduced milk production and slower return to estrus without benefit of reduced calving problems," said Cole.

It is also a good idea to begin feeding a high magnesium (10 percent) supplement a few weeks prior to calving. "Base your decision on past problems you have had with winter grass tetany.

Keep the high mag supplement out until warm weather arrives, mid-April in the Ozarks," said Cole.

It is also a good idea to treat the herd for lice if not done recently.

"As the calving season begins, do your best to keep the age spread narrow between newborns and their older siblings by moving to cleaner pastures," said Cole.

If scours do occur, develop a routine of feeding, treating and checking for calving that involves not transporting diseases from sick calves to healthy ones.

Diseases can be carried on clothes, boots, gloves, etc.

Also note that feeding large hay packages in rings or feeders should be evaluated, as they may become a trouble-spot for mud, manure, trampling of small calves. Cole says unrolling bales may be a better practice for sanitation, plus newborns love to lie on the hay.

"I realize all of these tips may not be attainable, but do the very best you can. Remember, that baby calf you get started off on the right foot could be worth $1300 to $1500 in the fall of 2015," said Cole.

LAMAR-Obtaining a quality soil sample is vital for receiving accurate nutrient recommendations for a field.

"In a 20 acre field, there is about 40 million pounds of soil. Of those 40 million pounds you send one pound to the lab for results, so make sure that one pound represents the field," said Jill Scheidt, agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

Soil samples need to be taken every three to four years. The average soil test assesses nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, organic matter, neutralizable acidity, cation exchange capacity and pH levels.

Micro nutrients are not tested for unless the producer requests it at an additional charge.

"Different soil types and soil needs are in the same pasture or field. Several samples bags need to be collected if the land is uneven," said Scheidt.

For example, if a pasture was once two pastures,

separate samples should be taken on either side of the old fence line.

Likewise, if there is high animal traffic in a pasture, that area should be sampled separately. Hillsides and waterways should be sampled differently. If a pasture has been converted to a crop field, separate samples need to be taken if a pond or tree line has been removed.

"Soil nutrient properties can fluctuate throughout the year depending on the season. When soil sampling it is important to take samples at the same time of year, each year samples are taken to provide consistency," said Scheidt.

The best time to take a sample for forages and spring-seeded crops is when the field is idle; usually after harvest in the fall or winter.

For fields with winter wheat and fall-seeded crops, sampling during the idle time in the summer is best.

Pre-plant or pre-side-dress nitrogen samples for corn should be taken in the spring as close to planned nitrogen application as possible.

"It is best to wait at least three months after application of phosphorus fertilizer, lime or manure before taking a soil sample," said Scheidt.

Sample cores need to be at least six to eight inches deep since too shallow of a sample can cause an overestimate of soil fertility levels.

"Every core should be the same depth and quantity to provide uniformity. A zigzag pattern of random soil sampling across the field works well in most situations," said Scheidt.

If using a shovel instead of a soil probe, dig a hole and slice off one side. Collect 10-20 cores in a bucket, crumble and mix them. Then remove sticks, rocks and grass and place about one pint of soil into a plastic bag or soil sample box.

"Always label the bag in reference to where the sample was taken in order to identify it when the results are received. The number of cores collected should reflect the variation of the land and land history; more samples if the land is varied, less if it is

more uniform, it is better to take too many samples as opposed to too little," said Scheidt.

According to Scheidt, grid soil sampling, which is sampling the field in 2.5 acres per sample, is economical when used in high yielding fields; especially when significant variations in soil tests are anticipated. "It can also be useful in a field where the history is unknown. Grid soil sampling provides the most accurate results when paired with a variable rate spreader," said Scheidt.

Interpreting soil tests are the most difficult part of the process but specialists from University of Missouri Extension always add recommendations that make it easier.

After collecting the soil take it to the nearest University of Missouri Extension county office. The staff there can help with the paperwork and get your results in seven to 10 days for a modest fee.

COLUMBIA, Mo.– Low property tax rates—a third of the national average—play a hand in keeping Missouri land values stable, says University of Missouri Extension economist Joe Parcell.

He predicts that land values may soften briefly as commodity prices drop. However, low interest rates, low taxes and growing consumer confidence will keep prices steady, Parcell says.

Missouri’s average property tax rate between 1951 and 2012 was 0.12 percent. During the same period, Missouri average growth rate for land values was 6.6 percent, above the growth rate for adjoining states.

Interest in recreational land also has kept land values high.

Rent-to-value has been above 6 percent, a full percentage point above the national average, Parcell said.

“There are a number of positive factors that are likely to support Missouri agricultural land values,” he said. “The economy is picking up steam, which stimulates consumer discretionary spending. Interest rates remain low, and the stock market increase has led to increased consumer confidence.

This is the perfect recipe for seeing nonagriculture-related interest for Missouri farmland.”

Cash rent for land is changing as well, said MU Extension agricultural business specialist Karisha Devlin. Rising livestock prices pushed pastureland values up faster not extend the limitation period that would bar claims one year after the decedent’s death, as provided in Section 473.444, RSMo., or any other applicable limitation periods. There are also changes due in part to the growing number of landowners who don’t live on the land. Absentee landowners may be two generations removed from the farm.

They may have fewer emotional ties to the land, little understanding of farm issues and see the land only as an investment. comChanging modity and livestock prices are driving interest in flex leases and cash agreements, Devlin said.

In the past, landowners may have based cash rents on what others pay. Be leery of “coffee shop talk” as a guide, and mathematical use equations recommended by MU Extension.

Devlin said good cropland averaged an estimated $4,717 per acre in 2014. Pastureland values ranged from $1,751 to $2,672, up 7.2 percent from 2013 due to demand caused by higher beef prices. Timberland was worth $1,820 per acre, and hunting and recreation land was valued at $1,710.

The simplest rule is, “The best land is still the best value,” she says.

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is pleased to announce Missouri has experienced a reduction in drownings, boating fatalities, and traffic fatalities in 2014.

A total of 29 drownings occurred in Missouri’s lakes and rivers during 2014, compared to 38 in 2013. There were 15 boating fatalities in 2014, compared to 17 in 2013.

Preliminary statistics indicate that Missouri recorded 753 traffic fatalities in 2014, compared to 757 fatalities in 2013. This is a 40 percent decrease from the 1,257 fatalities recorded in 2005. The number of traffic deaths has dropped each year since 2005, with the only exception being 2012’s slight increase. Of those required to be restrained, approximately 63 percent were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

"This is an important trend that the Patrol would like to see con-

tinue," said Col. Replogle.

"Every trooper is committed to working with other agencies to make Missouri a safer place to work and raise a family. I want to thank the public for helping to make this year safer than last year."

The Missouri State Highway Patrol urges boaters and motorists to continue to do their part to keep crash statistics moving in the right direction. Boat operators and motorists should be courteous. When in doubt, yield the right-of-way.

Please stay alert, obey all boating and traffic laws,

and make sure everyone in the vessel wears a life jacket and those in a vehicle use a seat belt. Never operate a vessel or a vehicle if you’ve been drinking. Missourians can help by reporting dangerous boaters or drivers to the Patrol’s Emergency Report Line at 1-800-5255555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

Note: The 2014 fatality statistics in this news release could change if late deaths occur, or if other departments report fatal traffic crashes after this news release was sent out.

Nentrup Signs With Neosho County

Jessica Nentrup of Lockwood signed a letter of intent Tuesday, December 17th to continue her career at volleyball Neosho County Community College in Kansas.

Nentrup, a 5-foot-8

senior, started varsity for two years as an outside hitter.

She led the Tigers in kills (177 ), digs (440), and serve percentage (96%) as a senior and was first team all-Spring River Valley Conference, first team Class 1 all-district, 1st team Southwest all-region and Honorable Mention all-state.

Ken Miller reported on the Hulston Mill Christmas festivities and their float in the Christmas Parade. More activities to come for Hulston Mill in 2015.

Next meeting will be February 3, 2015, at the Senior Center.

Normally I don’t read or pay any attention to articles that are written by those whom I have no contact or disagreement with, however after several calls I did read the article by the Joy preacher.

Although I would be one of the first to agree that one has the right to put into print anything one believes, I will have to agree with those who called.

After reading this article most of us may as well crawl in a hole and pull the hole in after us.

To those who were upset over this article, my advice is to consider the source and ignore it. Now

that you know the mind set of the author, pay no attention to future articles written by that person if it upsets you. For those of you who are wondering who is contributing money to the operation, ask for a financial statement. I understand there were those who thought this operation would be an asset, however they have changed their minds after reading the philosophy of the current administrator. At least that is what I have been advised by those who called me.

As the saying goes, different strokes for different folks!
