Area Residents Complete Community Alliance Program

Mock Fire On October 8th, the Callao Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Callao C8 School for a “Mock” fire. Inside the building a “victim” was “planted” and the fire fighters were to locate him and bring him to safety. Within three minutes the victim was rescued.

Macon’s Christmas Events Underway!

As the local shops prepare for their holiday sales the town is quickly showing their Christmas spirit! Windows decorated, trees and lights strung through the town and bows and ribbons wrapped and tied all showing the signs of the holidays!

This year’s theme for the Christmas parade is “Twas’ the Night before Christmas”, pre-registration deadline will be Monday, November 26, 2012.

The parade will be on Friday, November 30th at 4:30 pm. Line-up will begin at 3:30 PM at the Macon County Courthouse. All Parade entries will line-up as you arrive.

The route will begin at the Macon County Courthouse then go south on Rollins Street to Vine Street then east on Vine Street to Jackson Street, north on Jackson Street to the Park. The parade ends at Jackson and Sheridan Streets.

NO SANTA’S are allowed on any entry.

Judging will be conducted during the parade. 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be awarded in the following 3 categories: FLOATS and DECORATED VEHICLES & WALKERS. For more information call the Chamber office at 660-385-2811 between the hours of 9am to 4pm Monday – Friday.

Registration forms may be dropped off at the Chamber Office at 119 N. Rollins or faxed to 660-385-6543.

After the parade don’t forget to stop and see the lighting at Jackson Street Park. Santa will be there waiting for all the children’s request.

2012 Troop B Area Community Alliance Program graduates Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces on November 12, 2012, 19 Troop B area residents completed a Community Alliance Program (citizens’ academy) offered by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop B Headquarters. This was the eighth program of this type to be conducted at the Troop B Headquarters since 2001. The Community Alliance Program is a unique opportunity for citizens to gain insight and understanding of the training and many duties of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

It also offers an opportunity to meet

and interact with several members and employees of the Patrol. During the program, the participants met at the Troop B Headquarters in Macon, MO, for 10 consecutive Monday evenings and received classroom and practical instruction on various topics including firearms, traffic stops, traffic crash and criminal investigations, polygraph examinations, and driving while intoxicated enforcement.

The program culminated with an awards ceremony, which was held at and sponsored by the Macon Comfort Inn. During the awards ceremony, participants received a plaque for their participation. Participants of the 2012

A Man of Many Life Stories Leroy Teter is a man of many stories and an abundance of life experiences.

He is one of few men or women that get to experience 100 plus years in this life. Yes, Leroy celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 28th. Leroy’s family had a very nice gathering for his birthday. The guest list included names of 140 people, 77 were family, only 15 were not able to attend. All attending wore custom T-Shirts just for the event that read “Leroy’s Legacy”.

Leroy was born in 1912 just north of Ardmore, MO. Leroy’s family moved to Excello, MO when he was only three months old. He attended school in Excello except for the last two years which were at Macon.

On March 14, 1931, Leroy married Mary Lamb in Macon, MO. The two lived with Leroy’s grandfather for four years until he passed, at that time they moved out on their own.

The couple began their new life with just three horses, 25 laying hens, 2 cows, two week’s worth of groceries and a single quarter.

In the same year Leroy and Mary were married, Mary’s uncle, Alve Lamb, was killed when he was hit by a train. In his estate sale was a horse sleigh, made by the Blees McVicker Carriage Company in Ma-

con. Mary so wanted to keep the sleigh in the family so Leroy purchased it.

Leroy and Mary used the sleigh often until the roads started being bladed at that time it was difficult to pull. The sleigh that Leroy purchased in 1931 has now been donated to the Macon County Historical Society and will be on display at the museum.

Leroy spent his life farming, but also worked as a substitute mailman in Jacksonville for 40 years.

He recalls starting out on horseback delivering the mail and was paid $5.00 a day. He would sometimes split the route with a friend and they would each get $2.50. The route started out as being 30 miles long, but by the time he stopped delivering, the route was 100 miles, which was why he decided to retire from carrying the mail.

Leroy can tell you all about the days before TV, radios, telephones and electricity. He does not have cable and will tell you he don’t need it. There were no paved roads in the area and only one gravel road and one rock road, which was between the sanatorium and the coal mine. All the roads in town were brick and the rest were just dirt.

times between Macon and Excello.

It’s hard to imagine that now days with four lane highways taking you from Macon to Excello in the matter of minutes. Leroy loves to travel down memory lane and can tell you of many changes in the world that he never imagined would come about from electronics to indoor plumbing.

Leroy has three daughters and one son, along with 19 grandchildren, 37

great-grandchildren and 29 great-great-grandchildren. When Leroy was asked what he attributes to his long life, his son Eugene quickly answered, “Fat, Meat and a lot of Sugar”.

Leroy still lives just south of Excello in Randolph County and enjoys his time with family. Going down memory lane with Leroy is a learning experience and he can tell you some great stories as well as facts of a history of much forgotten.

Macon Higher Ed Open House November 26 MACC, Central Methodist officials on hand Moberly Area Community College and Central Methodist University will be co-hosting an open house for prospective students at their facility in Macon on Monday, Nov 26.

The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Macon Area Education Center, 408 Blees Industrial Drive. This open house will allow prospective students to meet with officials from CMU and MACC to

learn about programs that are offered at Macon.

Moberly Area Community College will be represented by Shannon Crist and Central Methodist University will be represented by Aimee Sage.

Make this year your year to sponsor a family for Christmas As many families stockpile extra groceries for Thanksgiving dinners, other families throughout Macon County are already worrying about a Christmas that may lack enough food, warm clothing, or even toys for the children.

Macon County Ministries is ready once again with plans to help those families meet some of their needs through “Helping Hands at Christmas” and the Santa Shop.

Debbie Hartung and Cheryl Carlson coordinate the overall program, and

Sandy Coons organizes the Santa Shop after receiving names from them of the families who need toys.

Toys are needed early, with final toy pickup from area collection locations on December 4.

This allows time for the toys to be inventoried and organized before parents come to the Santa Shop on December 8 to select toys.

The Santa Shop takes place early in December so parents are sure their children will have something to open on Christ-

mas morning.

Individuals, churches, and clubs are invited to sponsor and deliver food baskets and clothing for families through “Helping Hands.” Names are provided to Hartung and Carlson by state agencies, Head Start and churches.

This year the initial focus is on single parent families and grandparents raising their grandkids.

Sponsors get matched with a family or families, and the sponsor purchases and delivers the food and clothing a week before

Christmas. Others may wish to make monetary donations to be used for families through “Helping Hands.” To sponsor a family or give a financial gift, contact Debbie Hartung at 385-4156 or Cheryl Carlson at 385-1999.

It takes a big response by the public to provide the needed food, clothing, and toys for struggling area families, and it is Macon County Ministries’ hope that people will again respond as generously as they have in past years.

Bevier First Baptist Church Warm Temperatures in November Sets Christmas Program

The Bevier First Baptist Church’s AWANA Club is preparing for the Christmas Program to be held on December 16, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the church. There are 72 children enrolled in the program this year.

VETERANS HONORED AT BEVIER C4 SCHOOL

Well, I don’t know about the hunters in the area, but I loved the first day of deer season!

Weather in the 70’s always makes for a good day! Of course where we live you don’t want to venture too far from the house without putting orange on. I didn’t hear as many gun shots this year and haven’t seen all the deer kill in town as usual.

It sounds like the weather is going to turn cold for them this week; maybe the deer will be moving!

I am officially finished with the Highway Patrol Community Alliance Program! It was a great experience and I thank all of Troop B for the hard work and time they put into this program. It is one I would encourage you to take if you have a chance.

Now you know what Friday is! Yes, time for the crazy shoppers to come out and cause havoc in all the retail stores! I can remember my first year going to the early morning, black Friday shopping experience. All I wanted was a Furby! I thought I was going to walk into a store pick out a Furby and see what other bargains I could find. Just looking forward to spending the day shopping. When I arrived to the store it was utter chaos! People running and pushing, I never saw the like! I got back to the Furby’s and there people grabbing them up and others pushing to get to them. I just took a rain check and got away from there. Later I was at an end cap that had brownies on sale, there were only a few bags left so I placed them in my cart. Now mind you, I had a small child in my cart and out of nowhere an older lady, I would guess in her mid to late 70’s slammed her cart in to mine and yelled

LIEBHART “I was going to get those brownies” and literally started taking them out of my cart! I was stunned! I took my daughter out of the cart and said “Lady, you can have those brownies” and I left the store! I swore I would never shop on black Friday again!

Actually, the past few years I’ve considered just taking the video camera out to see all the things people say and do, I just can’t drag myself out of bed that early.

I prefer a nice day at home putting up the Christmas tree. Actually we will be doing that on Thanksgiving day this year! I hope the weather is as nice as it was last year when we got our tree!

Thanksgiving Time

By Diane Olson The house fills with aromas of a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal: turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pies and rolls. Family and friends join together to share food and fellowship during this season.

As you prepare for this celebration, you may wonder about the cost of this year’s Thanksgiving meal. According to the annual Marketbasket Survey conducted by the Missouri Farm Bureau and the American Farm Bureau, the cost of food items will show a slight increase.

The shopping list, enough food for 10 people, consists of a 16-lb. turkey, stuffing made with preseasoned cubes, heat-andserve rolls with real butter, two pumpkin pies made with pumpkin pie mix and pre-made pie shells topped with real whipped cream, frozen green peas, fresh cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and a relish tray of carrots and celery. The beverage offerings are a gallon of whole milk and coffee.

Missouri shoppers found that items needed to prepare a meal for 10, and hopefully have leftovers, would cost $51.87, or $5.18 per person. Again, the cost would be lessened depending on the amount

of food available to prepare additional meals.

The 2012 prices are $4.46 higher than the same items last year. The biggest jump came in turkey prices, which moved from an average of $1.21 per pound last year to $1.46 this year. This accounts for $4 of the difference between the two years when pricing a 16-lb. bird.

The national average price per pound for turkeys was $1.39.

Missouri shoppers also found all three dairy items, milk, butter and whipping cream, rang in slightly higher. Other items costing slightly more included the pie shells, rolls, carrots and celery. Lower prices were found for the pumpkin pie mix, sweet potatoes, cubed stuffing mix and cranberries.

Weather events this year will likely be conversation starters at many gatherings this year. As we enjoy the bountiful meal, we should be mindful of the challenges farmers face each year to provide safe, abundant and nutritious food. Farmers work every day to provide food, clothing, shelter and so much more. When listing our blessings on this holiday and every day, be sure they are included.

A THANKSGIVING GIFT

The Charles Johnston Story Written By Local Author, Pat Shanahan The year was 1934 and I was six years old living with my family on an 80- acre farm that my father sharecropped in central Missouri. We lived in a drafty two-story farmhouse that was stifling hot in the summer and never warm enough in the winter. Besides my parents and two older sisters, my grandfather and two teenaged male cousins shared the house.

Times were hard everywhere as the Great Depression stripped many families of financial security. Very few were unaffected by the times, and none of those lived in our world. The safety nets that society provides today were practically non-existent and only the neediest were given any assistance, and that mostly included surplus food and a small welfare check. Food stamps, public aid, and social security payments were not on anybody’s radar screen in 1934.

Each day we walked the two miles down a dusty, dirt road to our one room schoolhouse and only when cold weather hit did

the school district provide transportation, a tarp covered truck with wooden benches.

There was no machinery on the farm and dad worked the fields with horses, planting, cultivating, and harvesting the crops of corn, sugar cane, and winter wheat. The work was hard, the days were long, and along with the few farm animals he raised, our family barely scratched out a living. In the winter dad walked three to five miles each way to work in a small, tunnel coal mine: a facility that also had no machinery and was worked completely by hand.

Dad was a church deacon and before our evening meal always led us in prayer giving thanks to the Lord for our good health and the food on the table. We had enough to eat, but not all we wanted and although we celebrated holidays, usually with a little extra at supper, we never had any special meals like families have today. Mother raised a large garden and canned much of the food we ate

over the winter, cooking over a wood burning potbelly stove. She raised a few chickens and to have chicken for dinner was a welcome treat. Our meals consisted of little meat and most of the meat we ate consisted of wild rabbit or squirrel that dad or grandpa shot.

We had another coal burning stove in the living room. My favorite place in the winter was lying on the floor near the stove listening to the radio or playing a game with my sisters. It was the night before Thanksgiving and I was making a complex fort out of mother’s clothes pins in front of the stove as my parents talked in the kitchen. I could easily hear the conversation and even though I wanted to ask about Thanksgiving, I knew when my parents talked adult talk, I was never supposed to interrupt. They were discussing the Thanksgiving meal and other than mother baking cookies it sounded like a typical everyday spread.

As I played and listened I could hear the wind howl

as an early winter storm raged just outside. When a loud crash came from against the house I jumped up frightened, and ran to my mother. Dad just shook his head. “Sounds like a tree branch hit the house. I better go look.”

We all waited by the door for the news about any damage when dad gently pushed it open and held a large wild turkey by the feet. He looked at mother and just smiled.

That was my first Thanksgiving turkey and by far my most memorable.

Was that meal provided by divine providence or was it just some unlucky bird that got lost in the storm? As true believers mother and dad always thanked the lord, but others, upon hearing the story, credit blind luck. Me? I never thought much about how or why that turkey flew into our house on Thanksgiving eve, I was just grateful that it did.

Riding Out the Storm In the way of introduction, let me say most boats can take more storm than the sailors.

When Paul was on board a ship in the storm, the angel told Paul he would not live unless he stayed in the boat. He was told to pass this message on to the crew.

Only someone already in boat could relay this message to the others.

Paul did not show up in a different boat and shout this message across the water. He was saying, “I am here with you, and we must stay in the boat together”.

Only a fool jumps ship in an open sea during the storm. A seaworthy ship can take on a lot of water.

A good sailor can bail a lot of water, and the captain who knows his ship does not fail to trust it.

We have a captain, Jesus Christ, who has never lost

a ship. He choose a ship that has crossed the ocean many times. He knows storms are only a part of sailing.

John 6:22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one where into his disciples were entered.

Our ship is constructed from the material of the cross. There is no other boat, and there is no other way to cross except with this boat. The way to heaven is hitching a ride on the cross. The blood of Jesus is the glue that holds the boat together.

A church founded on the blood and the resurrection of Christ will takes the crew through any storm in life.

Let me conclude by saying, don’t you think it time to ride a storm

through?

You cannot trust the boat until you have sailed thru the storm.

Purple and White – Spirit Scrimmage

HELP WANTED

Bevier C4 held their annual Basketball Scrimmage on Thursday, November 15th at the High School Gym. The Community Pep Rally started at 6:00 pm as Hot dogs, chips and soda were served in the cafeteria. The Wildcat Spirit was high and the house was packed. Both boys and girls teams held a scrimmage game, Cheerleaders held everyone’s spirit high and the band played the National Anthem prior to the games beginning and throughout the evening.

With deer season upon us, some of you may be wondering what are we going to do with this deer meat? That is if the hunter in your family got the big one or just got cold waiting for him and shot whatever he/she saw. So far we have had a doe and a buck to work up. Yes, we eat deer meat. I make jerky out of the tenderloins and can the rest. To make the jerky I freeze the loins or put them in the freezer long enough for them to get firm. I find it is better this way to run through my slicer. By the way I found my slicer for $20 through a friend, yes I’m a bargain shopper.

After I get a large bowl nearly full of meat I add Hi Mountain Seasoning. I have made my own seasonings and didn’t really like it. If there’s marinate you use and your family like it give it a try. I have found trial and error works too. If you think something might be good, try it on a few pieces.

My kitchen has been a test kitchen more times than I care to mention.

I have found we like the bold taste of Hi Mountain Seasonings and here’s a little secrete, if you buy it after deer season, it is usually marked down in price and will keep till next deer season. I usually buy the variety pack it has five different types of seasonings. Ok, back to the bowl of meat. We’ve got the sliced meat in the bowl and we are going to add the seasoning.

Mix it up well then put the meat in a zip lock bag.

I try to leave it in the frig at least 24 hours per the directions. After that take the meat out of the bag and put it in the food dehydrator. I have two this year.

So it should go a little faster for me. Last year I had one and it seemed like it ran all the time for a while.

I picked up the dehydrators at a garage sale. If you

buy them new they run anywhere from $50-$100, the one’s I’ve seen anyway. I let the meat dehydrate until it is dry and bendy, NOT until it breaks and shatters like glass. Now, for the rest of the meat, I work up a quarter of meat at a time, front and hind. I cut off the meat in chunks. I don’t waste time cutting around the leaders. I cut out the big hunks of meat and cube them up. After all the quarters are cubed, the tenderloins are reserved for jerky, and the meat is washed up.

It’s canner time. I put the cubed meat into quart canning jars. I fill the jar half full of meat, add two beef bouillon cubes, and continue filling the jar full of meat. Fill the jar to the neck leaving a ½ inch head space. Do not add any liquid to the jar. Place jars in canner, add enough water to the canner so the water level reaches 2/3 way up the jars. Process jars for 90 minutes at 10 pounds of pressure. Do not leave the canner unattended. Constantly check it to make sure it doesn’t exceed 10 pounds of pressure. After 90 minutes turn off the stove and be sure to leave the canner alone until the pressure gauge reads 0.

I use this meat in vegetable soup and beef and noodle type meals.

It is really good. If you don’t usually like deer meat you should give this a try. I have had several people try the finished product and they really did like it. I have used Lipton soup mix instead of the beef bouillon cubes and it is really good too. You can use whatever you think tastes good, get creative. ALWAYS follow YOUR canner instructions as far as preparing your canner for use. If you give it a try let me know what you think. That’s Life in the Country.

So far we have had a doe and a buck to work up. Yes, we eat deer meat. I make jerky out of the tenderloins and can the rest.

Business Spotlight - Franke’s Studio and Jewelry Jewelry, Photos and a lesson in history!

Bill (Billie) Franke has been a photographer since 1948.

He went into business with his brother Joe who was the jeweler of Franke’s Studio and Jewelry.

At the building they originally occupied, they found over 1200-glass negatives of pictures from Macon and the surrounding area dating from 1910 and up. Bill has spent many years going through the negatives, reprinting them to sell, making them into postcards, and has created two books, Macon &

Macon County Volume 1 and 2. These books can be purchased at the store on Rollins St. In 1953, he and his brother moved the storefront on Rollins, which used to be Fox Jewelry in 1866, and have been there for the past 59 years, Joe having since retired.

His main focus these days is copy work on photos and working on his historical photography books. He sells prints, postcards and books. He also does framing, and can transfer your 8mm film to

Callao C8 School News

The Callao C-8 School Board had its regular monthly meeting on November 12. Mrs. Marcie Johnson was the teacher representative.

She announced that her class will be presenting a play entitled “Native American Welcome” on Tuesday, November 20 at 8:15. She also distributed a flyer describing Caring and Sharing Family Night which will be held on Monday, November 19, from 6:30-7:30. All are welcome to attend.

Mrs. Halstead gave the administrator’s report. She stated that Cindy Ayers would be on campus on Thursday and Friday afternoon for individualized classroom

visits to discuss strategies for bullying and prevention.

A DVD set has also been purchased to cover CIPA (internet usage) safety rules. Teachers will be sharing these videos with their classes in the near future.

Mrs. Mattingly’s 5th and 6th graders will be attending the Shriner’s Circus on Friday. Rebecka Wriedt will be the parent volunteer for that trip.

On December 5, the students and staff will be attending a Christmas play at the Maple’s Repertory Theatre.

The staff will be helping Suzan McLain, cafeteria supervisor, prepare a Thanksgiving Feast. It will be served family

style and the entire student body will be feasting together on Tuesday, November 20.

The Board voted to install new cameras in the 2013 bus and welcome The Heritage Society Country Christmas and the 5th and 6th grade basketball team to use the school facilities.

Volunteers for this month include: Mary Lester, LeeAnn Payne, Amy Schaefer and Rebecka Wriedt.

The 2012-2013 audit was approved and the BOE approved filing dates of December 11, 2012-January 15, 2013.

Board members’ terms that expire in April 2013 are Amy Schaefer and Dale Wriedt.

do some shopping and was authorized to purchase the table if she finds a suitable one.

It came to the attention of the group an individual in town is in need of a load of wood. It was voted to take care of this need at once.

December 2nd is the date chosen for CWF’s annual sacrificial dinner.

This dinner consists of a variety of soups, desserts and drink.

The meal will be served following worship service on the first Sunday of December.

Proceeds are used for the funeral dinners throughout the year, help with Buddy Packs and needs at school, pledges to Sherry Lile Ministries, Central Missouri Food Bank and donations to neighbors who need a hand.

Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the dinner and time of fellowship. A free will offering may be given at the door.

It was mentioned if Christmas Cards are sent now they will reach Sherry Lile in Cambodia just in time for Christmas.

Christian Women’s Fellowship Sets President Judy Bakke called the November meeting of the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the Bucklin Christian Church to order at 1:45 pm on November 13th, 2012.

The group prayed the CWF prayer and Judy shared a poem, The Cornerstone is Jesus. Linda Hensley read from Ephesians the 6th chapter to begin the worship. She spoke on the theme of Veterans and gave an interesting account of what defines a veteran.

Linda closed the worship service with a prayer.

Patsie Hughes took roll call and read the minutes of the October meeting.

Minutes were approved as read. Jean Still gave the treasurer’s report and included in her report that all bills are paid to date.

by Patty Truitt This is my first article for The Home Press. I do hope that in time I will be able to find out all the wonderful and fun things that are going on in Clarence.

I am writing this on Veterans Day and we had a wonderful program and songs lead by Troy Renner at the Clarence Christian Church this morning. We have Sunday School at 9 AM and Worship at 10 on Sunday morning. We are getting to know our new minister Dan Hogan and his family, who have only been in Clarence for a short while. Next Sunday our church will have a carry in Thanksgiving Dinner right after morning service.

I love the Holiday season and I love Thanksgiving but it seams to be getting left out. All the stores are decorated for Christmas to get sales started early. I have always loved the Macy’s Parade and have always believed Christmas Season did not start until Santa appeared in the parade. Some of my friends have their trees up already.

Well not one of my trees are going up until the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I have taken off work that day and will put up all seven trees. That is right, I put up 7 trees, countless Nativity, Angels, and Santas.

I pack up all my stuff and put it in the boxes I store Christmas decorations in.

You are invited to come by to see all the decorations and lights.

The Clarence United Methodist Church has Sunday School at 9;30 and church at 10;30 every Sunday. Their Pastor is Delbert Earlywine. He told me they had a great turnout for their annual Lords Hour Sale on November 3rd. On November 20th the CUMC will host the Clarence Community Thanks-

giving Service at 7 pm.

All the local churches will participate in this service.

He also reminded me that the Ministerial Alliance supports the Thanksgiving Meal at the VFW Hall on Thanksgiving day.

I talked with Wanda Peart and asked her what was going on at the First Baptist Church. The pastor is Jerry Lillard and they have morning worship at 10:45 They will be participating in the Community Thanksgiving Service. They have done a lot of remolding on their church building this year.

They put a new front on the building and new windows. They also put a new floor in the basement and new cabinets. They will be taking gifts to everyone in the nursing home before Christmas. This sounds like a wonderful project.

I talked to my Granddaughters Norma and Bella Wood. They said school is out for thanksgiving on Tuesday the 20th at 12:50 and they will return to school the following Monday. They said for everyone to have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

They then filled me in on December activities.

On December 4th the whole Clarence School is going to the theater to see a movie. Friday December 14 will be the Christmas program at 7 pm. They invited everyone to come. School will be out for Christmas break at 12:50 on December 21st and they return on January 7th 2013.

Well I want to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Celo (Davis) Geers celebrated her 90th birthday on November 13th, 2012. Family gathered at Tall Paul’s for supper and special birthday cake to honor Celo and other members of the extended Davis family observing November birthdays.

Daniel Ervie celebrated his 88th birthday on November 11, 2012. The rainy weather kept Daniel from coming to church with his family as they had planned so the family went to Pioneer Care Center to celebrate with him.

ODDS ‘N ENDS Following the question a couple of weeks ago about the age for trick or treating here came another inquiry. Is there a booklet or pamphlet outlining cell phone manners? It seems no matter where you are; Doctors office, church, funeral, grocery store or wedding there will be at least one cell phone to interrupt and intrude on whatever is taking place. Well, readers, what do you think?

Several opinions were shared about the Halloween question so let’s hear from you about dos and don’ts of cell phones.

COWBOY CHURCH The Macon County Cowboy Church met Thursday evening, November 8, at the 36 & 3 one Stop Cafe in Callao.

Archie Phillips brought the message from John 15 : 9-17 on “Loving Each Other” He offered a closing prayer. The group then sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

CALLAO CHRISTIAN CHURCH November 11th began with food and fellowship before the Sunday school.

Worship Service began at 10:00 a.m. with Richard Castle giving the welcome and announcements. Following was a Veteran’s Recognition with Darrel Swafford reading an original poem written by a former Callao resident’s grandson entitled “The Veteran’s Cost.” Darrel then called the veterans to the front. There were 19 present. Bill Hoke led the “Pledge Of Allegiance.”

A slide show of veterans, past and present with over 100 being shown. Richard Castle had the opening prayer and “America the Beautiful” was sung.

Prayer request cards were turned in and read. Communion hymn was “It Is Well with My Soul “before the Communion was served. Ken Mantle’s message was from John 13:27 Let’s deck the halls on Wednesday, November 28th everyone is invited to a “Church Building Decorating Party.” We will meet to decorate at 6: oo p.m. Supper at 6:45 . There will be a list on the board to sign up if you want to bring soup, sandwiches or

dessert. After supper we will have a fun gift exchange for the adults and older kids. If you want to participate, just bring a gift of $5 or less. It can be anything--be creative! Wrap it but don’t put a name to or from.

Members brought food packages to be given to the local food pantry instead of having grab bag gifts for Christmas meeting. Plans were made for the December meeting, which will be held on December 7. Lunch will be at the Apple Basket Restaurant, and afterwards members are invited to go to Lauretta’s home for visiting and dessert.

It was reported a sympathy card was sent to Sylvia Jones and a get well card to Connie Sommerfeldt, and a lap robe will be given to Connie. A lap robe was given to Melvina as hers was misplaced in a move within the nursing home.

The birthday song was sung to Imogene for her November birthday, as well as the anniversary song. Mariam and Melvina’s wedding anniversaries were also recognized.

Louise read “Senior Sentiments”, Mariam read a prayer, especially for absent members and their families and Jayne sang a version of Julie Andrews’s song “My Favorite Things”. She got a standing ovation.

HERITAGE SOCIETY Members of the Callao Heritage Society met recently to begin organizing “CHRISTMAS IN CALLAO” to be held at the Callao School Gymnasium on Saturday, December 8.

Ministries have been in Christian drama for over 30 years and have presented this drama at revivals for over 19 years and each time using a cast of local people.

Both nights brought in a full house of all ages. The drama featured presentations from all walks of life and took you through the journey of Heaven and Hell. This drama had the audience rejoicing, crying, and back to rejoicing in a matter of minutes.

John Laye and Larry & Becky Roberts Led Church services for the residents and their guests Sunday morning. Missy Killen played the piano. Those attending were Jim Hill, Grace Killen, Missy Killen, Andy Killen, Geneva Oliver, Blanche Hoffman, Frank & Martha Mason, Mary Gertrude Edwards, Isabel Hutcherson, Helen Griswold, Norma Latimer, Dorothy Dee Daniel, and Loreta Wynne. This afternoon, Bill Bevan came out and read to the residents. They all enjoy this relaxing time of listening to Bill bring an adventure to life from the pages of a book.

Holly and the residents played the dvd game, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” Monday morning. Unfortunately, everyone had to admit that they were not smarter than a 5th grader! They had fun playing anyway while learning some fun trivia facts.

Holly and the residents had all the ingredients ready for the Home Baked Love cooking class Thursday morning.

Clark told us that we needed to relate to people, especially those in our Church. Holly and I took Helen Griswold, Clarence Mueller, Norma Latimer, and Glenn Wallace to Windmill Ridge this afternoon. The drive over was beautiful and the yummy treats we bought were oh-so-scrumptious!

Ronnie Shores was here Saturday morning, sharing his collection of story and music cd’s. The residents watched the dvd “South We would like to offer our very deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Frances Browne.

We hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving.

We have so much to be thankful for every day throughout the year. We are blessed!

Heartland Headlines y Kathy Nickerson Pastor Charlie, David Barton, Mauricio Toro, Jaymes Schrock, and James Powell have just returned from a mission trip to Mauricio’s home country of Colombia, South

America. They traveled with Maruicio’s former pastor and his wife who currently live in the United States.

Lois Jean (Allen) Bixenman

Lois Jean (Allen) Bixenman, 76, of Macon, MO, formerly of Callao, MO, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at Loch Haven Residential Care Facility in Macon.

Lois was born on May 10, 1936, in Callao, the daughter of Ross and Lester Frances (Grimshaw) Allen. Lois was united in marriage to John Leland “Lee” Bixenman on April 29, 1961, in Wien, MO. After graduating from Callao School, she worked in Illinois for awhile before returning to Macon and working as a waitress at the Standard Oil Station.

Lois was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, sewing, traveling and bingo. Lois was a member of St. Mary’s of the Angels Catholic Church at Wien.

Lois is survived by one son, Gail Bixenman and his wife, Debra of Callao; one daughter, Johnna Bixenman of Macon; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Bixenman and his wife, Bretta of New Cambria, MO, and Laura Bixenman of Liberty, MO; two greatgrandchildren, Mason and Colin Bixenman; two sisters, Marjorie Wright of Macon and Delores Myers of Mexico, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers; Lavier, Calvin, George, Ronnie and Jamie; two sisters, Lucille and Fern and three infant brothers: Randall, C. W. and Bobby.

Mss of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 17, 2012, at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s of the Angels Catholic Church in Wien with Father William L. Korte officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s of the Angels Catholic Cemetery in Wien. Visitation will be Friday evening, November 16, 2012, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm with a Rosary at 7:30 pm. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Cemetery Association, Loch Haven Nursing Home, or the Lee Bixenman Farms, Inc. Award.

COMMUNITY NEWS meetings and one large stadium crusade. As usual, our team was welcomed with great hospitality, and they came home feeling like they received more blessings than they gave.

Mauricio came to the United States as a student several years ago and is now in management at Heartland Creamery.

He preaches often at our church and also helps lead a Spanish-speaking service on Friday evenings.

Mauricio is married to the former Heather Barton, who serves on the staff of Heartland Christian College. We are so grateful for young couples like this.

They make the future look bright.

Special Program Held at Bucklin Christian Church The November fellowship dinner was held after morning worship at the Bucklin Christian Church on November 11th.

Host committee was Ed and Jean Still, Craig and Judy Bakke, Rick and Patty Gilmore and Junior Long. Kevin and Kim Souther and Ann Chrisman also helped the committee.

Following the dinner, members of the American Legion Post #57 and four members of the

Bucklin Legion Auxiliary presented the program, ”Honoring the Four Chaplains” in honor of Veteran’s Day. The program told of the World War II Army Transport, the Dorchester, being sunk by enemy torpedoes on February 3, 1943. Four chaplains, a priest, a rabbi and two ministers, willingly gave their lives that others may live. The chaplains were Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander

D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed. In addition to the four chaplains a total of 672 military personnel died that day with only 230 surviving. This program is very impressive and well done. Twenty two members of the American Legion Post # 57 and Auxiliary took part in the presentation. Ralph Thomas is Commander of Post #57.

POST 57 ATTENDS BUCKLIN SCHOOL VETERANS DAY CEREMONY

November 12, 2012, the students, staff and faculty of the Bucklin R II School assembled in the school auditorium to commemorate Veterans Day and honor local veterans. Members of The American Legion Green Hills Post 57 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 57 posted the colors with bugler Charles Hughes playing “To the Colors.” Bucklin School Principal Nicole Head welcomed the veterans and presented Post 57 with an appreciation poster signed by the students. Student Kurt Anderson read the poem “In Flanders Fields.” A complimentary breakfast was provided to the veterans after the ceremony.
