La Plata Cross-Country Big Winners at State!

La Plata, MO Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary Craft Fair The Macon Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary will host a Fall Craft Fair on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the hospital.

The fair will be open 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, and will feature numerous crafts including fall items, candles, jewelry, baskets, wreathes and homemade candy. There will also be a bake sale plus raffles and door prizes.

Pecans, sold as an annual fundraiser for the auxiliary, will be available in the hospital gift shop, and refreshments will be served throughout the day.

All proceeds generated by the Auxiliary are used to purchase items for the hospital.

La Plata Nursing Home Continues Thanksgiving Tradition

La Plata Nursing Home would like to return a blessing to show our gratitude for the many ways we are blessed by our community. Whether it is students from the school, area churches, organizations and clubs, music groups or individuals, you care enough to give of your time to bring love and joy to those in our home.

If anyone in the community would like a free meal delivered to their home on Thanksgiving Day, please call the Business Office at 332-4315

by Tuesday, November 26th (no late orders can be accepted). The meal will include turkey, noodles, mashed potatoes & gravy, green bean casserole, hot roll, cranberry salad and pumpkin pie. We will begin delivering meals at 11:00.

State Cross Country meet held last weekend in Jefferson City at Oak Hill Golf Center.

Mitch Cox placed 115th (out of 170 runners) with a time of 19:56.30 which was his personal best all season.

Camrie Feinberg (freshman) placed 109 (out of 160 runners) with a time of 24:41.47, being the first female cross country runner to ever run for La Plata and qualify for state.

Seth Brown (junior) placed 1st (out of 170 runners) with a time of 16:51.09, being the first boy to bring home that title to La Plata!

Seth Brown stated, “Starting my junior year off the right way. Today I won my third state title and my first state crosscountry title. Without the support I’ve received throughout my running career I would not be where I am today. I just want to thank my family, friends, and everyone else that’s ever told me good luck or congratulations. But the main reason I was able to do what I did today was because of Dad and Zack. I’ve realized there’s more to running than it seems. I believe you must run for more than yourself, and because of them I was able to have that motivation. It’s for you guys”.

Graves Introduces Small Business Saturday Resolution

Congressman Sam Graves (MO-06), Chairman of the House Small Business Committee, today introduced a resolution to designate a Small Business Saturday and express support for America’s 28 million small businesses.

The bipartisan Graves resolution encourages people to shop locally at small businesses in their communities, particularly suggesting November 30, 2013 – the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The designation of a Small Business Saturday

by Congress helps raise awareness of the impact of small businesses on the U.S. economy and the value of thriving

small businesses to every community.

Stores and other businesses throughout the country traditionally experience a major upswing in economic activity the weekend following Thanksgiving Day. Since 2010, Small Business Saturday has emphasized a “shop local” theme that follows up the “Black Friday” advertising of major retail outlets.

Small companies are often highly innovative, and account for half of America’s economy. An overwhelming 93 percent of Americans recognize the importance of supporting small businesses.

“Small Business Saturday is a great way to say ‘thank you’ to a small business near you, especially during the holiday shopping season,” Graves said. “America’s small businesses help define what communities are all about. Small firms create seven out of every ten new jobs, and employ nearly half of all private sector employees in the United States.

Small businesses make a big difference in our nation’s economy and their growth is essential to a stronger recovery.”

Macon County R-IV Fall Sports Banquet November 21 The Macon County R-IV Sports Banquet will be held on November 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at Bucklin R-II School.

Macon County R-IV will be providing a bus that will be available for students and families to ride over to Bucklin for the banquet. The bus will leave the Macon County R-IV parking lot at 5:30 p.m. If you are planning on riding the bus please either have your student sign your family up with number of riders or call the school and they will add you to the list.

This will be a carry-in supper for fall athletes and their

families. Team/groups recognized will include: Varsity Baseball, Varsity Softball and Jr. High Basketball.

The following is a list of what each athlete should bring: Baseball and Softball—warm side dish JH Boys Basketball—salad JH Girls Basketball—dessert If you have more than one student athlete you are to bring only 2 covered dishes per family. The school will provide the meat and dinner rolls, the Athletic Booster Club will provide the table service and drinks.

Little Mr. and Miss Christmas in Bevier contest 1:00 p.m. in the school gym on Saturday, December 7th.

Baby Show will be at 2:00 p.m. in the gym.

Friday, November 22, Varsity Basketball “Jamboree” with Bucklin/Macon Co. and Novinger. Girls and boys will play each team in a round robin style tournament.

Games will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday, November 25, Varsity Basketball games at Bevier against Madison.

Girls game starts at 6:00 p.m. Boys will play after the girl’s game.On Tuesday, November 26th, Bevier School will hold its first “Shoot for a Cause” basketball fundraiser

beginning at 9:30 a.m. This will be a basketball game played between middle and high school students vs.

Bevier School faculty and staff. All students are invited to attend the game for $1. If you are a 6th through 12th grade student wanting to participate in the game, the cost is $3 and you can sign-up with Mr. Toll. Teachers wanting to participate in the game will be charged $5 and teachers who do NOT play will pay $10. All proceeds will be donated to the Macon County Food Pantry. Community members are invited to attend. The cost will be $2 and donations are welcome.

Weather permitting, on Dec. 2nd, MoDOT crews will be completing bridgework on the Middle Fork/Chariton River Bridge on US 36 in Macon County. Traffic will be reduced to one lane from Route C to MO 3 between 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day while the work is being completed. There will be 12 ft. width restriction during this time.

In addition, Maintenance is scheduled for Route J Nov. 20 road closed 8 am-3 pm from Route HH to MO 3 for culvert replacement. Various Routes -Nov. 1829 possible intermittent lane closures or slow moving vehicles blocking driving lane for surface and/or roadside maintenance operations in various locations.

Bevier C-4 News Thursday night, November 14, 2013, the American Legion Brookfield Ernest A McNish Post 182 held their monthly meeting at the Cattlemen’s Restaurant.

Guest speaker Denzil Heaney, Laclede Legion Post 197 Commander and Brookfield Boy Scout Troop 41 Scout Master, presented a program on the local scouting program and its need for equipment. Post 182 Adjutant Charles Brockman and Commander Terrance Collins presented Heaney $260.00 for scouting equipment.

Members also voted to donate $200.00 to assist a local veteran’s family for payment of their electrical bill, that is jeopardy of being cut off. Post 182 Commander Collins stated, “It is our responsibility to be an integral part of the Brookfield community and assist those in need.”

Post 182 meets 6:00 PM the second Thursday of each month at the Cattlemen’s Restaurant and welcomes all veterans and male and female descendants of American veterans to attend.

OBITUARY

Alan Carney, 74, of Macon, MO, passed away Monday, November 11, 2013, at the Neighborhoods Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, MO. Al was born on April 15, 1939, in Shenandoah, IA, the son of Harry R. and Maxine Moody) Carney. He was united in marriage to Sharon Boshart in Upland, CA on March 7, 1964. Along with his wife, Al was the owner and operator of Carney Funeral Chapel in Macon, Bevier and Callao for many years. He was a member of the Macon United Methodist Church, Macon Rotary Club, Elks Club, and Macon Country Club. Al also enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his family.

Alan is survived by his wife Sharon of the home, two children, Michelle Caszatt and husband Eric of Columbia, MO, Blair Carney and wife Joanna of Apex, NC; five grandchildren, Gage Caszatt of Mobile, AL, Joshua and Matthew Caszatt of Columbia, Bryson and Landon Carney of Apex, NC and several nieces , nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by parents and one sister Sharon Mealey.

Funeral services were Friday November 15, 2013, at 10:00 am at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Macon with Reverend Julius Ketsenburg officiating.

Burial in Bethlehem Cemetery southeast of Macon. Visitation was Thursday evening from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Gene Bogeart, 69 of Atlanta, passed from this life Thursday, November 14, 2013 at his home.

Gene was born November 7, 1944 at Atlanta, a son of Claudy “Blacky” and Leola (Main) Bogeart. On June 27, 1964 at Atlanta, he was united in marriage to Janice Kay Baker, who survives of the home. He is also survived by 3 children: Michael Bogeart of Atlanta, Mark Bogeart of Atlanta and Misti Bogeart of Macon, a very special friend, Isaiah Curtis; 2 grandsons: Ryan & Brady Bogeart both of Warrensburg, MO; a sister, Elaine Head and husband Tony of Macon; mother-in-law, Betty Baker of Atlanta; an aunt & uncle of Illinois; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Larry & Bobby Bogeart.

Gene lived all his life in Atlanta. He was a 1962 graduate of Atlanta High School and was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church. He enjoyed carpentry and mechanics and was very skilled at both. He was a fan of NASCAR racing and Cardinal baseball. He enjoyed gardening and loved his sidekick dog, Molly.

Memorial services were at 12 p.m. (Noon) Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Elliott Funeral Home in Atlanta with Pastor Daniel Brands officiating. Visitation was Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment followed at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, east of Atlanta.

Honorary Bearers were: Ryan Bogeart, Brady Bogeart, Steve Petre, Isaiah Curtis, Jack Carnahan, Prentice Elliott, Marlin Duenow and Lloyd Dale Gladhill.

Leota M. Keith, 82, of Macon, MO, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2013, at her home in Macon.

Leota was born on January 28, 1931, in Leonard, MO, the daughter of Sarah E. (Jones) Thompson and Austin G. Thompson. She graduated from Shelbyville High School, Shelbyville, MO, in 1949. Leota attended Hannibal-LaGrange College and Kirksville State Teachers College. She taught school for several years.

Leota married Gilbert N. Keith on December 25, 1949.

To this union four children were born. Debbie A. (Terry) Hinrichs of Marthasville, MO, Diana B. (Rick) Huse of Warrensburg, MO, Gilbert Van Keith of LaPlata, MO, and Austin G. (Tammie) Keith of Columbia, MO. There are four granddaughters and one grandson, four greatgrandsons, two great-granddaughters, two step-grandsons, and one step-great-grandson.

Leota loved cooking, decorating cakes, gardening, flowers and crafts. Her family was always one of her great concerns plus their happiness. She valued her friendships and truly enjoyed keeping in touch. Leota was a member of Crossroads Christian Church in Macon.

Leota was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Rollin G. Thompson and David A. Thompson.

Funeral services were Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 10:00 am at the Crossroads Christian Church in Macon.

Burial was at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO. Visitation was from 5 pm to 7 pm, Wednesday evening, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO.

Thanksgiving. It has become a time for family and friends, a time for a break from school or work, generally remembering our “pilgrim” roots of remembering to take time to be thankful for what we have.

Every year as it arrives, it should cause all Americans to stop and ask “how thankful AM I?” However, just a Christmas is not the only time to be thinking about what we could do to help others, Thanksgiving is not the only time to be thankful. As a Christian, this is where the beauty of the practice of our faith, which is called to be an integral and inseparable part of our lives at all times, comes in. Are we generally “grateful” people?

The commemoration and “anamnesis” (a Greek word meaning “powerful remembrance”) of last time Jesus shared a meal with his disciples is known by many names: The Last Supper, the Breaking of Bread, The Lord’s Supper,

the Assembly (synaxis), but most prominently over the ages, “Eucharist” -- a Greek work meaning “thanksgiving.” Every single time we celebrate Eucharist (what Catholics sometimes refer to more simply as “mass”) we are certainly primarily giving thanks to God the Father for the greatest gift we world has ever known: sending His only Son, Jesus the Christ, to live, to suffer, and to die for us.

But additionally we are also reminding ourselves to be grateful in general.

While our society formally brings this to mind once a year, we are formally reminded of it with every gathering in which we make prayers of thanks-

giving to God. For Catholic Christians, we join others in giving thanks on the day we refer to in our country as “Thanksgiving day,” but we are also called to do so at every single “mass” we participate in, whether a weekday, a Sunday, a wedding, a funeral, Christmas, or Easter.

Astronomers using NASA data have calculated that in our galaxy alone there are more than eight billion stars with earth size planets in the “inhabitable temperature zone”, not too hot nor too cold for life.

Eight billion stars is more than one star for every person on earth. This figure is almost certainly low because scientists were only looking at “sun-like” stars, and they are not the common ones.

If you are a skeptic, you might not accept this data.

You may think, “Scientists don’t know everything.”

True, scientists are sometimes wrong; but in this case, they are probably under calculating. The universe is simply too large to measure. One article I read said, “Go figure”, but you can’t. We do not have numbers large enough to “figure” space.

If you are an optimist, you may be hoping we can soon travel to some of these “not too hot and not too cold” places. Perhaps you are hoping these faraway places will have more advanced civilizations, and their inhabitants will visit us and teach us how to get along.

If you are an opportunist, you may be hoping we can find and develop some foreign star and become rich.

That thought is frightening; our “development of unclaimed worlds” is strewn with human greed and casualties.

If you are a theologian, these findings present enormous insights into the work of our Creator. Personally, I believe God created it all. The Bible tells

us, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) Then again, the Bible says God holds all of creation “in the palm of His hand”.

(Isaiah 48:13) I believe that. I have always known God is greater than I can comprehend.

Understanding more about the universe He created increases my confidence that He can keep His promise to care for me.

As a child, I wondered where God will put us all if the Christians from all the years (a number in the billions or more) go to heaven. Obviously, the vast reaches of space can accommodate us.

I realize what I just said is childishly human. I happen to agree with J.B. Phillips, an Anglican minister, who noted modern discoveries and open minds convince us that God is immeasurably “bigger” than we or our forefathers ever imagined.

COMMUNITY NEWS It Can Wait Essay Contest Winner Dominique King, 16, a junior at Study Alternative High School in Springfield, Mo., is the statewide winner of the It Can Wait (no texting while driving) Essay Contest, sponsored by Missouri newspapers, the Missouri Press Association (MPA) and AT&T Missouri.

Ms. King will receive the $500 first prize. Her essay was submitted to the state contest after winning the Springfield News-Leader’s local contest.

“I want to thank the Missouri Press Association for joining the It Can Wait movement to end texting while driving, and I want to thank all of the students who took the time to enter the contest,” said AT&T President John Sondag.

“Texting while driving is an epidemic, but if we work together to raise

awareness of this issue, we can help save lives and make our roadways safer for Missourians.” Sondag announced the contest in September at the MPA convention in Kansas City.

Mark Maassen of The Kansas City Star and president of the MPA, invited Missouri newspapers to sponsor the contest in their communities. Nearly 30 newspapers throughout the state solicited contest entries.

On behalf of the Missouri Press Association and its member newspapers, I wish to thank AT&T for this partnership aimed at saving lives on our roadways,” Maassen said.

Unfortunately, this is a very possible scenario for a teen mother in Springfield who makes the life or death decision to type four characters to her boyfriend of two weeks ‹ a text that never will make it through.

A Ford F150 plummets into a small, already damaged Impala. A 1-yearold’s head is whipped around so quickly it causes bleeding and a concussion.

The child will never see again. The child will never speak. The child will never feel the embrace of his mother again.

In addition to the fact that the young woman had her eyes off the road, managed to hit the car in front of her while going 50 mph ‹ 10 miles over the speed limit ‹ and pushed it through the red light, she also wore no seat belt and the child was not in the correct car seat for his age.

The young woman was thrown from her vehicle.

She died from hitting the road and was then run over twice.

The child was torn from his seat belt and thrown to the floor of the car.

Upon finding him, police discovered he had two broken arms, was missing almost all his teeth and there was blood pouring from his ears. But he was alive.

These injuries were caused because a young woman couldn’t wait five minutes to send the text that read: “Ha-ha.”

Luckily, this is just fiction, but things like this do really happen.

Now, let’s turn the tables.

You’re the driver of the F150. You run the red light. You take the mother away from a 1-year-old boy. You cause him injuries he will never heal from.

He doesn’t remember anything he learned in his first year of life.

What did your text contain? “I love you” ‹ a text you sent to your own son.

When your phone buzzes or makes a little sound signaling that you have received a text, just think: Is this text worth my life? Is it worth the life of another? Is it worth totaling my car? Is it really worth losing anything?

In 2011, at least 23 percent of car accidents involved cell phones, which equals 1.3 million cell phone-related crashes.

Texting makes crashes 23 times more likely. Fiftyfive percent of teens say it’s easy to text and drive, but they are also reported to spend 10 percent of their time driving outside of their lane.

Too many tragedies have happened because of texting behind the wheel.

People are dying and being seriously injured for absolutely nothing!

Consider the risks. Think out the scenarios. Be proactive.

CLARENCE CARE CENTER NEWS Joe Koenen, Agri-Business Specialist TREE SEEDLING ORDERS This time of year we get the annual tree seedling order form that is available to Missouri and other landowners.

With our pine tree disease problems this year may be one when more of you consider this program.

The 2013-14 tree seedling order form is a project of the Missouri Department of Conservation. You can get these order forms now at the University of Missouri Extension Office in Macon at 514 E Briggs Drive, Suite D (across the street from Bank Midwest). Call the Macon office at 660-385-2173 if you have questions. This year’s order booklet again features color pictures of each species as well as common uses, height they will reach eventually and other important facts. The weather has impacted the nursery the last couple of years so some species will not be available and others will not be as big. Remember that these are 1-year old bareroot seedlings for the most part (some are 2 to 3-year old). The orders are filled on a first come, first served basis so don’t delay if you are interested. Orders can only be submitted

by Internet, fax or mail (no phone orders are accept-

ed) so keep that in mind.

They come in quantities of 10 or increments of 25 and the cost ranges from $6 to $32. Once the species are gone they are gone hence why you need to act early on.

This has been a very good program over the years so if you’re interested please come by and pick up an order form as soon as possible. University of Missouri Extension has a couple of guide sheets to help you with planting and caring for these tree seedlings also.

AGRICULTURAL LAWS I am going to discuss Agricultural Laws (other than estates) and how critical they are to your farm business. Things have changes a lot in the almost 34 years I’ve been here and so has this area.

Agricultural Laws can be very complicated for several reasons. First, there are not a lot of attorneys around who specialize in Agricultural issues. Estate planning is somewhat of an exception but there are not lots of those out there either. Second, Missouri has many traditions that have withstood time but tradition is not the law. Missouri’s fence law is a prime example of traditions that make sense but aren’t in the statute itself. Be ex-

tremely careful with these traditions since a neighbor or others are not bound by them. Third, our influx of landowners who were not born on the farm continues to rise. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing but they don’t know our laws and traditions in many cases.

Discussing the fence law, farm lease law or dog issue in a calm and straightforward manner could lead to fewer problems later on.

If you’d rather have someone else talk to them, have them contact me. Fourth, some Ag law issues are still evolving. Pollution and trash concerns can and do change as things continue to move forward.

So what can you as a farmer or landowner do?

CLARENCE CHRONICLES Thanksgiving will be here in two weeks and I am so excited. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. So much to be thankful for and it is the beginning of the Christmas season.

Last Thursday I had such a good day. I made two large homemade pizzas and my good friend Krista Austin came over for lunch. After visiting awhile we were in my attic going through all my Christmas decorations.

We put up a six-foot tree in my upstairs setting room. It was so fun to have such a good day with a good friend.

After school Thursday our Granddaughters Norma and Bella came to stay with us after school. They got to eat pizza; I had made 2 pizzas. They got their homework finished and Bella practiced her spelling words. It’s been a long time since I gave out spelling words. When homework was finished we had ice cream, and watched a movie. The minute Raymond came after them he asked “Were they good?”

Sunday I went to Sunday school and Church. After lunch I worked on Christmas. I have up one large and one small tree. By the Sunday after Thanksgiving, I will have up 4 big and 4 small trees. Kind of go overboard but Christmas is special.

Tuesday afternoon Raymond, Jessica, Nora, and Bella wood came to spend the evening wit Grandpa and Grandma. We were all delighted when our Granddaughters Kaylee and Katherine Claus came by to visit with all of us. Katherine is the two younger cousins hero and they know she is perfect.

We are enjoying pend-

ing the Holidays with our grandson Derek. He has enlisted in the Army and on January 28th he will leave for Fort Benning, Georgia. Not a bad place to go in January as the average winter temperature in winter is 65. He will be going into the 19th Delta Calvary Scout. A red, white, and blue flag cake was served along with red and blue punch to everyone attending. We appreciate all our veterans, and also the men and women who are currently serving.

The Home Baked Love cooking class met this afternoon in the Community Room. They made Popcorn Mix Snack.

The Clarence Elementary Kindergarten class, along with their teacher, Mrs. Jonna Adams, came

by Wednesday morning. They were the cutest!

They sang songs for us and then made a fall craft with the residents. Before leaving, they gave each of the residents a special colored picture. Without a doubt, they brightened our day! Pastor Dan Hogan, from the Clarence First Christian Church led Bible study this afternoon.

Scripture was read from Psalm 103:1-5. Pastor Dan talked about “Things To Be Thankful For”.

They made fall decorations for their rooms. Bingo was the popular game of choice this afternoon. The grand prize winners were Dar-

rell McDowell, Dorothy Dee Daniel, and Dolores White.

Friday morning, Holly and the residents played “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” They were doing really well until a question slipped them up, but they had a save left so in the end, they were able to proudly say they were smarter than 5th graders!

Holly and Robyn took Dolores White, Martha Mason, Dorothy Dee Daniel, and Isabel Hutcherson shopping this afternoon. They went to Ben Franklin in Macon and the store was absolutely stunning in Christmas decor!

Everyone had so much fun browsing through the aisles. We would like to thank Ben Franklin for the gorgeous Christmas wreath they donated to the Care Center. It is so beautiful!

Saturday afternoon, the residents watched “Tomorrow After Today” during Movie Time with Darrell.

Cell Phones for Soldiers Since 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers...

Have provided 181 million minutes of free talk time; Mails approximately 12,000 calling cards each week; Recycled more than 10.8 million cell phones, reducing the impact on landfills; July 2012 launched Helping Heroes Home, to provide emergency funds for returning veterans to alleviate communication challenges as well as physical, emotional and assimilation hardships; Has remained a family-run, non-profit organization operated almost exclusively

by Bob, Gail, Brittany, Robbie and Courtney Bergquist.

History Since its inception in 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has worked to keep military families connected by providing FREE communication tools to those serving overseas in the United States military. In seven years, the registered 501(c)(3) has provided troops with more than 2.5 million prepaid calling cards, equating to 181 million minutes of FREE talk time.

Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to continue its mission to provide troops with FREE calls home through generous monetary contributions and the recycling of used mobile phones. Used mobile phones from all service providers are accepted.

Each $5 contribution, or donated device valued at $5, will provide troops with 2.5 hours of FREE talk time.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Norwell, Mass., at the ages of 12 and 13. The organization has prevented more than 10.8 million cell phones from ending up in landfills.

“Cell Phones for Soldiers started as a small way to show our family’s appreciation for the men and women who have sacrificed the day-to-day contact with their own families to serve in the U.S. armed forces,” says the teens’ father, Bob

Bergquist. “Over the past few years, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue to grow as more troops are sent overseas for longer assignments.”

In July 2012, the Bergquist family launched a new program, Helping Heroes Home, which will provide emergency funds for returning veterans to alleviate communication challenges as well as physical, emotional and assimilation hardships.

“Since starting Cell Phones for Soldiers, we’ve wanted to create a program that would allow us to serve veterans here at home,” said Brittany Bergquist. ‘Helping Heroes Home’ is that solution. It allows us to quickly amend a difficult situation and restore some peace of mind and support.”

According to Jan Watts, the program began with two teenagers after hearing about a soldier that had a several thousand-dollar cell phone bill for calling home from overseas. “I have been collecting for over three years. Drop off points listed on the Community Calendar website of KIRX, INC. People are encouraged to drop off unwanted cell phones to be used to benefit Troops overseas.”

In cool weather, wise homeowners will take steps to ensure their homes are wellprepared. There are a number of ways you can keep your home comfortable and your energy bills in check all season.

It only takes a minute for you to stress out; any external or thoughtrelated stimuli can send your mind in turmoil and you start to feel the symptoms of stresstightening of the chest, short shallow breathing, feeling of restlessness, loss of appetite, headache, and profuse sweating.

There are a lot of stressbusting techniques like deep breathing and using positive affirmations to calm down. But one sure formula that instantly helps to alleviate stress is counting your blessings.

Gratitude works not just on your mental health but also on your physical wellbeing. When you instantly shift your focus from the cause of stress to thinking and being grateful about every blessing that you have in life, you feel much lighter, much in control of your life, and a part of the universe.

Gratitude- a word often used but seldom adhered to. How many times have we actually taken the time to feel grateful about something? We often say that good things happen to other people, but why don’t we realize that at time we are the ‘other’ person for a lot of people out there.

When you feel grateful, you feel content, which in turn makes you feel happier. And it is this consistent feeling of happiness that helps to reduce and in due time, thoroughly remove the proneness to stress and anxiety.

Stress is a growing concern in today’s fastpaced life, and it is no more a demographybased problem. From high school students to retired professionals, everyone

In fact, even if you are not stressed, just thinking that you have been granted more than enough gives you a sense of calm and you feel cherished.

With gratitude comes appreciation. So, when you truly feel thankful for relationships, career, job, money, or even health, you start to appreciate your current state in terms of these areas in life, even if it needs a little working upon. You start to consider whatever you have to be enough, which psychologically is a great stress reduction technique.

People often stress when their current quality of life or certain areas of the life do not match with their vision. So, if someone’s idea of a perfect body is a beefed up look with toned abs, they would not be happy at an overall healthy and fit body. When you feel grateful for whatever you have, this emotion and psychological feeling

that ‘I don’t have enough’ tends to ebb away and you feel content.

This is the direct influence of practicing the act of gratitude. A secondary benefit is that the appreciation born out of gratitude leads to acknowledgement of the things that you have, recognition of its importance and the void that would have been in its absence, and expression of gratefulness either to you partner (in case of a relationship) or to God (for career, health, and other areas of life).

Isn’t it that when you truly feel happy in a relationship, you appreciate your partner more and express your love more often. This leads to better fulfilling relationships and hence less stress in that area.

Similarly, taking the time out to regularly practice the act of gratitude ensures that you keep stress at bay.

Taking the time out once

a week to sit in meditation and think about the ‘good’ things that you have, makes your subconscious mind aware of things that are important to you and which gives you happiness.

We tend to be so preoccupied in life that we completely forgo and take for granted even the most important things such as our health, relationships, and sometime even our own character traits.

So what do we do about it?

A simple way to practice the act of gratitude is to first realize everything you are grateful for. List down every small blessing, every materialistic and nonmaterialistic thing that you should feel grateful for and stick this up somewhere, on your wall, mirror, anywhere where you can constantly see this and be reminded of.

Another plus of adopting this technique is that when you are stressed

you already have a list of things you feel grateful for, so it comes instantly to you or you can directly read from the list.

Counting your blessings and practicing the act of gratitude is not just a moral code, it actually helps to reduce stress, improves your mental and emotional health, and hence causes a marked difference in your physical health by improving the overall quality of your life.

So, the next time you feel you are about to come under pressure and feel stressed, start counting your blessings and you would instantly feel a sense of calm taking over you.

Want to take it a step further? Perform one kind action everyday and you would definitely have a lot of things to feel grateful for and happy about.

Troop B Area Residents Complete Troop B Community Alliance Program

residents completed a Community Alliance Program (citizens’ academy) offered by the Missouri State Highway a, Troop B

Headquarters. This was the ninth program of its type conducted at Troop B since 2001. The Community Alliance Program is a unique opportunity for citizens to gain insight and understanding of the training and many duties of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. It also offers an opportunity to meet and interact with several members and employees of the Patrol.

During the program, the participants met at the Troop B Headquarters in Macon, MO, for 10 consecutive Monday evenings

and received classroom and practical instruction on various topics including firearms, traffic stops, traffic crash and criminal investigations, polygraph examinations, and driving while intoxicated enforcement.

The program culminated with an awards ceremony, which was held at and sponsored by the Macon Comfort Inn. During the awards ceremony, participants received a plaque for their participation.

Black Black is the Friday after Thanksgiving, and it’s one of the major shopping days of the year in the United States -falling anywhere between November 23 and 29. While it’s not recognized as an official US holiday, many employees have the day off -except those working in retail.

The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the start of the modern Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season.

In the 1960’s, police in Philadelphia griped about the congested streets, clogged with motorists and pedestrians, calling it “Black Friday.” In a nonretail sense, it also describes a financial crisis of 1869: a stock market catastrophe set off by gold spectators who tried and failed to corner the gold market, causing the market to collapse and stocks to plummet.

Conservation FederationShare the Harvest The Conservation Federation of Missouri and Missouri deer hunters are committed to Missouri’s Share the Harvest Program. Since 1990 and with the assistance of numerous partners, Share The Harvest has provided a healthy protein source for many Missouri families and has become an effective tool for our deer herd management. According to the United States Department of Labor, one in six families are at or below the poverty level. By offering sportsmen the ability to donate their harvested deer to certified meat processors and covering all or most of the costs, Share the Harvest provides hunters with a way to help needy families. The donated venison, once processed, is distributed to thousands of needy Missourians through food pantries across the state.

Thanks to Missouri Food Bank Association, Missouri Department of Conservation, Bass Pro Shops, Shelter Insurance, WalMart Foundation, Allan P. and Josephine B. Green Foundation, many Conservation Federation Affiliates, and the continued generous financial support of many other partners, our program is looking forward to a great year.

Meat processors also play a key role in the success of Share the Harvest and we thank them. The Conservation Federation pays sixty dollars towards the processing fees of each donated animal and in many

instances, local contributions to certified meat processors result in little or no expense forhunters to donate their deer to the program other than the costs for permits, equipment and fuel. The two-thousand-thirteen Conservation Federation budget allows for ten-thousand whole deer donations.

Once again, hunters need to legally harvest and tele-check their deer before bringing them to an authorized processor for donation. A list of authorized processors is available on line through the Missouri Department of Conservation website www. mdc.mo.gov and in the current brochure of deer hunting regulations, available wherever permits are sold.

Deer hunters have donated over three million pounds of venison since the program started and we hope you will make plans now and consider donating a deer to Share the Harvest. Even if you are not able to donate an entire deer we hope you will at least consider donating a package or two of venison. There is a great need out there! Usually the tons of venison the program produces only lasts a few weeks in the food pantries.

Do your part to help maintain a healthy Missouri deer herd and, at the same time, provide venison to Missourians in need. Together, we can make a difference!

GIFFORD ITEMS Colder and color gone is the best way to describe the present. Most of the leaves have turned brown and fallen in the nearby conservation area. It is definitely getting colder each day as we adjust to the time change back to regular time. Mornings have been in the 40’s and windy.

Brianna Carroll of Plano, IA, daughter of David and Paige Carroll and granddaughter of Patsy and David Eitel, ran the Turkey Trot at Hannibal La Grange University Campus on November 2nd, 2013. She won 1st place in her age division, 13-15 year olds. All proceeds went to missions.

HEARTLAND HEADLINESK. Nickerson Basketball season started at Heartland on Monday night with a compassionate twist. The high school boys and girls teams opened the season with a couple of hometown scrimmages. During the boys’ game, our coach announced that for each point scored, he and his wife would donate one dollar to disaster relief in the Philippines. He challenged the large crowd of supporters to match his donation or to give a onetime gift.

they did sustain damage to some of their buildings and crops. Life is already hard for these families and their churches. We can’t imagine the struggles they face each day just to survive. Now, more than ever, we are looking for ways to bless them.

Our college students have been working all year to raise funds for a Bible College we often visit in the Philippines. We probably all need to dig a little deeper now and grow that gift.

These issues remind us once again what a blessing it is to live in the United States. With all the troubles our nation faces right now, we are still abundantly blessed.

Monday November 11th, the Macon Tigers Football team, their parents, friends and family traveled the long road to California Mo to take on the Pintos. The Tigers had reached the District Championship after soundly beating Boonville and getting revenge on Centralia.

Hopes were high as Tiger Nation traveled down the dark highways that evening. Their thoughts tempered with the knowledge no one except the team themselves expected them to go this far. They were expected to be a middle of the pack team just above 500 yet these Tigers had shown they were something more. Arriving in California the first impression was the field, which was weathered and expected an even larger pounding as a light rain fell on the combatants at the kickoff. The District Championship was underway and the Tigers wanted to continue their path along the course to state.

looked good to start but the Tigers faulted and were forced to punt. The Pintos have been an explosive team on the ground this year. The stout Macon Defense tested them holding them to short gains to start the drive. The Pintos found some room to gallop out of the wishbone driving the ball down to the Macon 14 before the Tigers forced a 30 yard field goal putting the Pintos up 0-3. The Tigers started moving the ball on their next drive with Little rushing for a short gain followed by a nice 6 yard pass to Jon Murray. Maybe a sign of things to come on the evening with Macon fumbling to end the drive and the Pintos hitting a long pass on the very next play 53 yards for a touchdown. The Tigers were down 0 to 10.

The Tigers went to their run game a 16 yard run by Joe Lewis followed shortly after by a 14 yard run by Lewis.

Little and the offensive line battered at the California defense running the ball for 25 yards on 5 carries to the 25 yard line of the Pintos. Joe Lewis pushed it to the 16 on back to back carries to end the quarter.

The Tigers were able to get it down to the 12 but no closer as a bad snap on forth down turned the ball back to the Pintos. The Pintos went back to the ground pushing it out of the shadow of their own goalpost. The then hit back to back big plays with a 37 yard pass and a 34 yard run to the Tiger 17. The Tigers forced a fumble and recovered the ball on their own 14 yard line. The Tigers chipped away at the Pintos moving the ball out to the 45 yard line highlighted by a 13 yard pass to Josh Turner.

The Tigers again were not able to sustain the drive and punted back to the Pintos. California went heavy with the wishbone offense, prodding the Tiger defense with short runs up the middle and sweep off the edge. They forced the Tigers back on their heels to the Macon 16 and then swept in on a Quarterback bootleg for a touchdown. As the half ended the Tigers trailed by 16 points, with the rain finally coming to an end as they left the field to the cheers of the Macon crowd.

The second half started with a kickoff to the California 31 yard line. The Pintos continued to use the wishbone chipping away slowly at the Tigers Defense and running down the play clock. The sloppy conditions working

against the Tigers defense and helping the Pintos misdirection offense move the ball. The frustration appeared to boil over with the Tigers getting a personal foul that moved the ball to the Macon 6 yard line. The Pintos tried to give the advantage back with a holding call but were able to punch it in on the next play to lead 0-23. Things snowballed on the Tigers as another drive started well with runs by Lewis and Little to the 50. But another forced fumble gave the ball back to California. The Pintos worked the ground game again with short consistent runs out of the wishbone pushing the ball down the field.

A frustrated Macon defense was unable to stem the tide and the Pintos drove the ball home for another score.

The Pintos held a commanding 0-30 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Forth quarter started with California again driving the ball on the Tigers. This Tiger team which had shown heart and determination rose up again and forced a pinto punt. Some nights the fates are not with you as the Tigers next possession ended with a bad snap that sailed into their own end zone for a safety. The scoreboard flashed 32 for the hometown team and stabbed at the hart of the Macon sideline. The Pintos took advantage of the short field on a free kick after the safety.

The marched down the field one last time and scored yet again pushed the score out to 0-39. The Tigers continued to fight and claw but tonight belonged to the Pintos.

The final score was 0-39.

Macon as a team should hold their heads high; they fought all season long and brought pride and respect to the community they call home. I look forward to seeing most of you again next year, and to the Seniors; you have shown you’re ready to move forward and we look forward to what you have to contribute to the community.

“I love working with sprinkles because they’re not only delicious, they’re so visual too. Of course you can scatter them over cakes, but you can also swirl them into waffles, ‘embroider’ them on cookies or do any number of creative things with them that look great for the holidays,” says Jackie Alpers, a photographer and author of the new cookbook “Sprinkles! Recipes and Ideas for Rainbowlicious Desserts.”

For a beautiful and delicious batch of edible ornaments you can hang on your tree or use to adorn your home, follow this recipe from Alpers for Windowpane Cookies: Ingredients • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened • 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 egg at room temperature, beaten • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • Approximately 1/2 cup various sanding sugars, sorted by color. (Clear hard candies, like

Jolly Ranchers can be used instead. Just sort by color into plastic bags, seal and use a hammer to crush the candies into bits.)

With a bit of colorful fun, you can make your holiday treats and gifts extra festive and delicious this year.

Directions • Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

• In another bowl, cream butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium, until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Mix in flour mixture until dough is smooth and firm.

• Divide dough in half and shape into two 1/2-inch-thick disks. Cover them in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

• On a lightly floured work surface, roll dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Cut out shapes using a larger cookie cutter and then use smaller cutters to remove “windows” from those shapes. Arrange cookies about 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets.

• Fill cookie windows with sanding sugars or crushed candy pieces.

• Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges start to turn golden, rotating sheets halfway through baking time. Place sheets on wire racks to cool for a few minutes before gently removing cookies with a metal spatula. Let cookies cool completely on wire racks. Store between layers of wax paper to prevent sticking in an airtight container for up to one week.

Thanksgiving Not Just Christmas Season Opener It seems as though the gap between Halloween and Christmas continues to grow ever smaller, with Thanksgiving being lost in retailers’ efforts to start the holiday shopping season earlier and earlier.

In the hope of capturing early sales, retailers now stock Christmas merchandise alongside Halloween’s ghouls and goblins. For kids, thoughts quickly turn from candy to the coming arrival of the holidays. Autumn’s treasures are lost in this rush to sell and to encourage consumers to spend more. But there are several good reasons for us to hold onto the tradition of Thanksgiving, and pass it on to future generations.

History The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians celebrated the first Thanksgiving feast together in 1621. The Pilgrims had a great deal to be thankful for during that first celebration. First, they were grateful to be alive; approximately half of the

original 102 passengers of the Mayflower died in the first year due to the harsh conditions and disease.

The Pilgrims were also thankful for their bountiful harvest that first autumn, thanks to the help of the Wampanoag people, who taught the new settlers how to make the most of the land. The feast of the first Thanksgiving would last for three days. It’s important to remember that Pilgrims did not have the benefit of grocery stores, and so their very survival depended on a good harvest to sustain them through the stark winter months ahead.

Today Thanksgiving is a holiday that is all about counting our blessings and sharing a meal with loved ones. It is not about presents and shopping and commercialism. In our plugged in, high-tech world, Thanksgiving is a time when we can focus on the truly important things in life: spending time with those

we love and taking stock of all we have to be grateful for. It is a time to embrace traditions, both old and new, and to celebrate our families, both the ones we are born into and the ones we choose. Many families choose to use Thanksgiving as a time to bless others who are less fortunate, by sharing their own bounty.

While living our busy day-to-day lives and dealing with the problems that our too common in our society, a poor economy, unemployment, or health issues, it’s easy forget about the good things in our lives: our families, our friends, our pets and our homes.

There are precious few days in a year when we can simply spend time with those we love. Thanksgiving offers the perfect moment to pause and reflect on all that’s happened through the spring and summer and to enjoy the warmth of those who will see us through the coming year.

What Is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the first Monday after Thanksgiving. In 2013, it falls on December 2, but most online retailers start their Cyber Monday deals earlier. In fact, top stores like Walmart, Target and Amazon are starting Cyber-week sales on Thanksgiving!

The best way to get in on their deals is to sign up for their email newsletters.

Nearly a third of shoppers will start Cyber Monday shopping on Sunday. Most (3/4) will shop on Monday morning, while 25% will wait till lunch, and 34% will shop Monday night.

Only 19% will take advantage of Cyber Monday sales the rest of the week.

Cyber Monday was christened by Shop.org in 2005, because it’s known for online shopping sales. It follows the bricks-and-mortar shopping done on Black Friday, the first shopping day after Thanksgiving.

Each year, new records are set as more and more people enjoy the convenience of shopping online.

In 2012, Cyber Monday sales were $1.5 billion, 17% higher than in 2011’s record of $1.3 billion. This was up a whopping 22% over Cyber Monday 2010.

Cyber Monday appeals more to a young person.

While nearly half of all Americans plan to shop online, 60% of those under 40 will do so, while less than 40% of Boomers will.

That’s an evolving shift. It used to be that shoppers needed the faster internet speeds from work computers. Now, most people have speeds that are just as fast on their mobile devices. It’s clearly the younger generation that are more comfortable using them to research products, compare prices, look up retailer information, redeem coupons, as well as buy.

Online holiday sales overall are expected to grow 12% to $86 billion.

That’s because 51.8% of people will take advantage of web-based sales, up from the 46.7% in 2011.

On average, each person will do more than a third (38.8%) of their shopping

online. (Source: National Retail Federation, Online Holiday Expectations Setting the Bar High, October 3, 2013) The holiday shopping season is important for the economy because 19% of retail sales occur between Black Friday and Christmas. For some retailers, such as jewelers, it can be nearly 40% of their annual revenue.

Overall, online shoppers plan to spend $884.55, nearly $150 more than the average. Their generosity extends to themselves.

They plan to spend nearly $160 ($159.73 to be exact) on themselves, taking advantage of Cyber Monday and other holiday deals.

This is $30 more than holiday shoppers overall.

To catch this extra dollar, 90% of retailers offered great online sales. Nearly all offered free shipping, which was a large reason for the success of the record-setting 2010 Cyber Monday. This success spurred more than half of retailers to increase their “free shipping” budget, while one-third of retailers offered free shipping even earlier than they did last year. These retailers are smart, because 36% of shoppers surveyed said they’d increase their online shopping only if shipping were free.

Nearly half of the retailers offered coupons or a percent off deals (45.0%),

while more than one-third had limited-time-only promotions. Fewer (15%) promoted a free gift-withpurchase.

Online retailers lured shoppers to Cyber Monday by promoting their sales even earlier than last year. More than half started their promotions by Halloween. These retailers are smart, since Halloween 2011 was the most successful spooky holiday yet.

Nearly 40% waited a few weeks, starting their Cyber Monday promotions in mid-November. Just over half started promoting on Thanksgiving Day itself, while nearly all (92.2%) offered sales sometime over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Cyber Monday shoppers are very clear about why they like the day. More than 40% of time-strapped shoppers said the 24-hour convenience is their highest priority. Almost as many listed their desire to avoid the crowds on Black Friday as their primary reason for shopping online. Nearly a third of online shoppers said they like the ability to easily compare prices. A few online shoppers said they would buy less, thanks to expensive shipping charges, not being able to see or handle their purchase ahead of time, and having to wait for it to be shipped.
