US Bank Presents Grant To Macon Economic Development by Becky Jeffcoat, Editor US Bank Foundation has presented a check in the amount of $24,260 along with the Macon Economic Development / Landfill Fee Structure Grant giving $30,000 for the Main Street Macon Downtown Associations Pilot Project. The Main Street Macon Downtown Association is moving forward with their Pilot Project for Downtown. MMDA is working to create a positive environment for businesses to locate and be successful downtown Macon. “By creating and maintaining an attractive downtown area we hope to better promote our community and increase our economic base”, Stated Leigh Simmons, MMDA President. “A thriving downtown attracts new
businesses and investments, in addition it supports small business development and expansion”. The project will begin with the beautification and infrastructure such as sidewalk improvements and lighting in an area chosen at the corner of Vine and Rollins St. The Parking Lot is the center of downtown and a very prominent area. Funds will be used for new lamp posts, side walk improvements, brick planter re-facing and the planting of trees and various plants to accompany the structural changes. The area will be utilized by the entire community as well as tourists to the Macon area and will be an appealing and safe environment for shoppers and busi-
City of New Cambria Receives Funds MO 149 Sidewalk Enhancement Project The City of New Cambria will receive $223,000 in federal transportation enhancement funds for a sidewalk enhancement project along MO 149. This project is one of six funded through the federal enhancement program that provided a little over $1.4 million in dedicated funds to MoDOT's Northeast District. Projects including the construction of sidewalks, trails and bike lanes, streetscaping, ADA improvement to existing sidewalks and other local projects that enhance transportation compete for these funds through an application process. The MO 149 Sidewalk Enhancement Project involves the installation of 4,025 linear feet of ADA compliant sidewalks in-
cluding an entrance at the southeast corner of City Park. "These improvements will provide safe pedestrian access along the residential neighborhoods and commercial areas within the City of New Cambria," said Ron Watts, MoDOT design liaison. "The transportation enhancement program has made many improvements possible that wouldn't have otherwise been funded," added Watts. The City of New Cambria will be sharing in a percentage of the project cost. MoDOT allocates transportation enhancement funds to each area of the state based on population. In northeast Missouri, MoDOT facilitates the application and selec-
tion process. A member from each local regional planning commission and three at large individuals with interests in transportation selects which projects will get funding. The money is provided under federal transportation law requiring ten percent of federal Surface Transportation Program funds are used for local transportation enhancement projects. For more information about enhancement projects and other transportation issues, please contact MoDOT's Customer Service Center during normal business hours at 1-888ASK MODOT (2756636) or visit our website at www.modot.org/northeast.
ness owners that come to shop and work. This project will be the beginning and a preview of the vision for revitalization of the downtown area. The MMDA will work with building owners to improve historic facades and encourage remodels of upstairs apartments into upscale lofttype rentals. They also encourage the beautifying of green areas downtown and new membership to the Macon Downtown Association is greatly appreciated. Working together with the community, small and large businesses, the Macon Area Economic Development, financial institutions, utilities and City Government will begin the journey to revitalize downtown.
